    Its a bit funny when one of the Swedish girls described Finns as 'reserved', when the fact is that Swedes themselves are very reserved as well. The two countries have more similarities than differences, in my opinion.

      Swedes are usually reserved, while Finns are more shy, generally speaking. But it depends heavily on the sex, for some reason. Finnish men are often much more shy than finnish women.

      Finns are definitively more straight forward and clear when communicating while Swedes have this “you ought know”-communication which gives Swedes lots of unspoken consensus. Foreigners don’t get this about Swedes every time it happens. I think this is one reason why Finns are understood as straight forward and honest. But then the Finns have silence as part of the communication. You give them a moment to think and continue the talk. This is quite significant for Finns while Swedes do talk much more. True that Finns are more shy.

    • @Silveirias
      @Silveirias 2 роки тому +57

      I don't think Finns are shy. Finns just have a different idea of politeness and interacting with people, which comes off as being awkward with strangers because randomly chatting with a stranger isn't something that's normally done.

    Finland's alcohol consumption is not as high as ppl think. Watch The video " Country alcohol consumption comparison."
    The highest alcohol consumption countries are in Europe: The 1st Moldova, the 2 nd Lithuania, The 3rd Chechia and the 4th Germany.
    Forinstance Russia, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Poland, Luxemburg, Belarus, Cypros, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, France, Ireland, UK, Estonia etc. are ahead of Finland

      @Phuck UA-cam censorship I would say big part of the high consumption was influence of alcohol addiction from the older generations who witnessed two wars in 20th century, the Civil War, which was exceptionally bloody and traumatizing, and The Second World War. Traumas are passed on generation to generation slowly fading when enough time has passed and now a significant amount of time has gone by since those days

    Alcohol consumption in Finland and Sweden is almost the same according to latest research. Sometimes its feels that swedes’ image of finland is stuck somewhere in the 70’s. Swedes also tend to be very aggressive when drunk, I have proven that many times. I know alot of them.
    Ps. When I have talked with my friends from sweden, they often mention the suicide rates in Finland. But the rates also are almost the same between us (not that high as people might think). I love Sweden but sometimes its annoying that they see themselves maybe a bit too civilized than they really are.

    For 700 years, Finland was the eastern half of Sweden, so we are very much alike. Finland is much like Sweden - but for grownups. Sweden is like the spoilt brat kid brother.
    In my family, we had friends and relatives that went over to fight in 1940. I still remember how we fifty years later still lit candles in the window on December 6, Finland’s Independence Day, so the missing could find their way home.

      But we must remember the fact that although Finland was part of Sweden, Finland and the Finns were mostly deprived of Sweden. The Finns were not part of Sweden of their own free will, but on the contrary forced, and those times were not necessarily good for the Finns at all, so I think being called a brother from swedes sounds bit strange. 5% of the Finnish people speak Swedish because of remnants of being under Swedish rule. The Finnish peoples have originally inhabited the northern and present-day territory of Russia. Estonians and other Finno-ucric peoples in Russia like Mari, Mansi, Karelians etc. are real brothers to Finns, even that how different our languages are already tells a lot about our roots.

    • @Jonsson474
      @Jonsson474 2 роки тому +20

      @@junantuoma7869 Finland was never a country before it was the eastern half of Sweden. So if was never occupied, there wasn’t Swedish rule since Finland wasn’t a country and was an the area equal half of Sweden, with the same rights and obligations. There was never a Finnish kingdom or a Finnish country in any form, it was just a collection of tribes, just like any country on earth before the central powers were formed and borders were first drawn. It used to be over 20% of Swedish population and swedes and other Scandinavian tribes had lived in the area of todays Finland for thousands of years. The coastland and the islands were dominantly Swedish speaking while the inland was Sami and Finns and the administrative language was Swedish. Even up until 40 years ago, every Finn had to learn Swedish in school and know Swedish to work in the public sector. Finnish nationalism has tried to change that since they needed to come together after the civil war (in which the Side led by the Swedish speaking Finns, the Whites won against the Russian supported Reds) that and with time the Swedish speaking population has diminished through mixing and through political measures. That’s why people like you are so negative and badly informed on your and our common history.

We also lack male vocalists capable of doing what f.ex. Älvestam and Strid can do. On the other hand, there aren't many in the world who can beat Noora Louhimo or Tuomas Holopainen in what they do, so it is of course always a matter of one's taste.

    Swedish people are good neighbors, brothers even, in many ways the closest people to us Finns
    ((alongside with Estonians and Finnic peoples in Russia))
    even if Swedes themselves probably feel much closer to their neighboring Scandinavians.
    Swedes are easy to be with; open, kind, polite, "normal" in an easy-to-approach way,
    they're also really good looking,
    innovative and successful in every imaginable way from industry to entrepreneurship, from high tech to all sports and pop culture. Really exceptional.
    Swedish people are less interested in Finland than the other way around. Guess we in Finland have always looked up to Sweden, which has also been a link to the Western culture for Finns,
    where as to Sweden, Finland is more just like a neighboring region, even a buffer zone, with "slightly off" but ok, people and culture I guess.
    Finnish people are a little weird but I feel like there's something valuable in our way of being as well: in the kindness, trustworthiness and overall good will of Finns, even if it's sometimes maybe a bit clumsy seen from foreign perspective.

I even ended up in hospital once and it was about as good an experience as it can be. I really like how conversations tend to be to the point, the concentration on doing things the right way first time and quality. Strange for me was that you can have periods of silence in a work meeting and no one thinks it's unusual. It's actually really nice that it gives you time to think. I remember once when I was trying to work out which tram to get in Helsinki and a nice lady came to help me without being asked, and this willingness to help seems quite common in Finland. Maybe some directional microphone and try to find music which is better for talking tones (not messing it up. Sorry, just trying to help.

    I've seen it mentioned before that Finns keep comparing Finland to Sweden all the time and are extremely happy if Finland beats Sweden in anything positive. However, if you interview people in Sweden, like in this video, an average Swede doesn't pay any attention whatsoever to Finnish things and only knows a bunch of very common things about Finland, such as the language not being Scandinavian and that there are a lot of saunas.
    But then again, maybe I also didn't know that much back when I was in my 20's. Interviewing people in their 30's and 40's could be more enlightening. Unfortunately people much older than that could have a bit lacking active English vocabulary, unless they have a suitable international background.

      Well I think it's pretty logical. Finns have two neighbouring countries they share properly boarder (With Norway there is boarder only in areas with not much people). We don't want to compare ourselves to Russia, so Sweden it is. In Swedens perspective they have Finland, Norway and Denmark as neighbouring countries. They see Finland as the weird country and gravitate towards the ones that have similar language and stuff. So they compare themselves more to the Norway and Denmark. 🙂

      Finns don't think about Sweden a lot normally. Now of course it is more important but in normal times.. they just are there, being Sweden. Of course for a smaller country and one that was once part of Sweden it is national pride to win Sweden in everything but it is nothing else but a sentiment, we don't really try to be better just because, we want to be better as a country. Except icehockey. There is matters, a LOT.

      Thats true. Which makes sense beacuse Finland has a history of being ruled by Sweden and swedes… youre also a bilingual country, obligatory swedish classes etc… So Swedish (Sweden) in a way appears in your everyday life all of the time. Sweden is the biggest country of the nordic countries… If you take Russia for example… many other slavic countries like Serbia for example look up to Russia and view them as their brother where as Russia dont. I dont know but i get a similar vibe from Finland and Norway towards Sweden. And also Sweden is pretty diverse. Like where i come from and some places in the north where there is a bigger finnish minority it might be abit different, but many places dont come into contact with finnish barely anything. But then again this should be obvious since finnish is viewed as very foreign in Sweden and swedish is quite common and ordinary in Finland. Swedish has a pretty strong connection to Finland where as Finnish has pretty weak connection to Sweden. Also make sense that Finland sees Sweden as a big brother and has a competitive nature towards us since you got ruled by us for such a long time.

    • @herrakaarme
      @herrakaarme 2 роки тому +3

      @@MigthyDucksz24 Finland wasn't ruled by Sweden. Finland was a part of Sweden. What is now called Finland developed slowly during those centuries. Before the Swedes came, Finland was only the south-western corner of the modern Finland. The other places were something else, like Savonia, Tavastia, Karelia, etc, populated by corresponding Finnic tribes. Over time Finland started to refer to the whole place. When the East Sweden, or in other words Finland, was lost to the Russian Empire in 1809, the Grand Duchy of Finland started to develop a real national identity because Finns didn't want to be Russians.
      What Finns think of Sweden today is far too big of a topic to address here.

    From these videos it's always super obvious that Swedes don't actually know much at all about Finland, I mean most of them, and even if they know something, then probably still won't visit.
    I find this a bit odd, I mean we're right here, isn't anyone curious?
    I'm always intriqued by all the countries we're close to, just because it's fun to see what's the same and what's different when you live close by.
    Only Russia I have never visited, but I've been to all of Scandinavia and all of the Baltics. Russia would also be nice to visit, at least St. Petersburg, but that would require a change of regime and politics in Russia, so probably won't happen any time soon.

    I was thinking of how to explain the rivalry between Finland and Sweden and here's what I came up with. Let's say that Swedes would in average be taller than Finns. However, if the tallest man of Finland was taller than the tallest man in Sweden, Finns would declare themselves the winner. Meanwhile, Sweden would not care or even know about this competition.
