      It's because there wasn't a 9 year propaganda campaign against Finland, even though Finland immediately applied to join NATO and is probably one of the most "Russophobic" countries in Europe alongside Eastern European nations. It shows you just how powerful the information warfare campaign waged against Ukraine can be.

    As a Russian who grew up in Murmansk, city next to the borders of Finland and Norway, I really love these countries. My father was a sailor and worked quite often with the Norwegians, often visited Tromsø. He always spoke well of them both as persons and as professionals. As a child, I also visited Norway and Finland. It seems that at that time there was some kind of simplified visa regime for Murmansk residents and riding there regularly was not a problem.
    In Finland, we have been to Saariselka, Rovaniemi, Oulu and Helsinki. I remember especially well the trips to Rovaniemi and Helsinki. Rovaniemi gave the impression of a nice small town, somewhat similar to my hometown Murmansk but smaller, much more well-maintained and without a port. We went there during Christmas season and obviously visited the residence of Joulupukki, there really was a festive atmosphere and everyone around seemed very friendly. Yeah, I know that it is their job to be friendly with tourists, but dunno, it seemed sincere. It also seems that it was the then when I tasted pipparkakur for the first time. Since then, every New year and Christmas, we went to the Finnish goods store and bought these cookies. Over time, I began to notice that this has become a kind of tradition not only in our family but also in the families of my many friends. A lot of people from my circle generally fell in love with all sorts of sweet and not-so-sweet things from Finland/Norway, like salmiakki, Marabou and Fazer chocolates, Sørlandsis ice cream. All of it was much tastier than Russian analogues.

    Helsinki reminded me of St. Petersburg with its architecture, but with completely different mood. Helsinki is not a boring place as many think. It's just more for vibes, not for parties, for me at least. Like walking around in a some cloudy day in October, visiting churches, libraries, embankments, chilling with a cup of coffee.
    In Norway I've been to Kirkeness and Tromsø. The people there were really chill and friendly. The centre of Tromsø, the Arctic Cathedral, the montains, the see, hot-dogs and sandwiches in Circle-K, all of these is something beautiful. Hope one day I'll get to Ålesund and Oslo.
    Also, my school cooperated with school in Tromsø so we often hosted guests from Norway, had some events tied to Norway and every year in March students from Tromsø came for a week to our school and our students went to Tromsø. You could choose to learn Norwegian from 7th till 9th grade. We even had additional Russian-Norwegian 12th grade where kids from both countries studied together. My friend moved to Oslo after 12th grade and now studies at the uni there. It was a common practice before the war as I know.
    It hurts me that today all of those ties are being torn. I love these countries and I want our peoples to be friends and partners. So sending love and wishing peace to all my nordic bros, you guys are great
    upd : could anybody recommend some Finnish/Norwegian music???

      I'm going to use my 'as a Finn' card to comment your sober and touching lament that you've written in exceptionally good English.
      After all, Finland and Norway both invested a lot of taxpayers' money in the bilateral development starting in the 1990's, from sewage treatment in St. Petersburg to school supplies in Karelia and Kola. Even food and clothing were supplied to locals in distress. There were new exchange programmes and all kinds of grassroot-level facilitation, and the target was to create the cultural and economic ties between people, companies and local administrations, some of which you described having experienced first-hand.
      Come to this day, Russia has permanently closed the Finnish consulates in Murmansk and Petroskoi, closed the ties between local administrations, confiscated Finnish-owned companies and even demolished some of the Finnish war memorials, in the nationalistic hubris of rewriting history and turning Finland into an enemy in the new narrative.
      These developments will evidently start to show in street interviews too, as time passes. So, don't lose your good memories, fight against the tide.

It was awkward at first but she was super nice, beautiful as heck and smart fellow engineering student like myself. I didn't want to harass her too much so I did not ask her number, but I kind of wish I did.
    My father died February 2022, but back when he was healthy, he travelled to Russia many times. He had even found a letter-friend Russian family during his travels and they send each other gifts all the time. When I learnt to speak, read and write some Russian, reading trough the letters the genuine warmth and friendship they had was heartwarming to read about. I still wonder how the family is doing all these years since then. The best I can wish for is for the world to find peace and move on from the past. Let's make a better tomorrow for all of us. I’ll never forget how the traditionally “reserved” Finns were suddenly a rowdy bunch with shopping carts full of cheap Estonian booze. And many VERY drunk Finns. I can attest that it’s very true about what that lady said about Finns (I guess Russians too) going to the Baltics on a major booze run.

    I'm from Finland. This was a really nice street interview. We need these kinds of videos of citizens in one country sharing their vibes of other countries in general. It is eye opening to your own culture from the outside. I've talked recently to a friend who moved to Norway so I don't see him all that much. He said he regretted learning russian and it was a waste of time. I asked him why he decided to learn it in the first place and he said he loves the culture. I said he probably still loves the culture. We must always separate the powerhouse from the people. I wish peace upon us all. And please don't hate on anyone. Nobody decided where they were born.

      @@Censeo Oh no, I regretted it before reading your post. When it comes to Finland, it does not take much to trigger me. There is always the straw that broke the camelˀs back. Funny thing about languages. I took a year of Russian in high school back in California nearly sixty years ago, and Russians invariably praise my Russian, which is obviously anything but fluent. Many people do not notice from my Finnish that I am a foreigner, but whenever a Finn wants to offend me, he starts in on my Finnish speech. In the public sauna once a man was bragging about the Finnish school system. I remarked that part of the success might come from the pupils, who are calmer than in other countries and are more likely to hear what the teacher is saying. It turned out he was a teacher and that remark offended him. So he said, "You think you speak Finnish so well, but I can say that just because you have a big vocabulary, pronounce it well, and do not make grammar mistakes, does not mean you speak Finnish well." I do not know where he got the idea I thought I spoke Finnish well. On the other hand, I do not understand his criteria for judging what fluent speech is. But you are right. The response was over the top also, but it seems you have these isolated examples why you don't like finns and it doesn't make sence. Most people would also think about that situation from the others point of view and realize he was an individual not an example of the entire finnish population which it seems like you are doing. It will have sauna at the ground floor, free laundry, bicycle parking and other things, and I'm not talking about nature. It's clean, beautiful and available everywhere. • @Gata_Scheglova
      @Gata_Scheglova Рік тому +5

      Because it is believed that Estonians, Latvians, Lithuanians and Poles treat Russians badly. There are several reasons for this. In the Baltic States there is a culture of abolishing everything Russian (demolishing monuments, for example), probably because of the government. In Russian propaganda, it is emphasized very strongly that the Baltic States do not like us. People hear this, and also hear that in Poland, for example, the Nazis and they hate Russians. At the same time, relations with Finland and the Finns were not bad until 2022, we often went to Finland (I'm from St. Petersburg). Finland probably has less in common, because Finland was not part of the USSR and it did not have time to dislike Russia so much. Although, in 1939 there was a Russian-Finnish war. My great-grandfather died there.

      @@Gata_Scheglova There were two wars, the Winter War (1939-1940) and the Continuation War (1941-1944), although I know that your history books tell quite differently about what happened... By the way, based on some polls, Finns are actually more anti-Russia (or anti-Putin) than any other nationalities... More so than even Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians. Or Poles. At least in relation to the war and things surrounding it.
