What a sound. The cleans are just as beautiful as the overdrive. One day, I'm gonna have 100 acres with a house in the middle of it....with a JTM45 in the living room, and not an attenuator to be found :-P
I had to listen to this again today. I love it. It's better than going to church. That amp is like an old Steinway piano. The guitar sounds like every record I fell in love with from the early 70's. Your playing does justice. Thank you.
Love it! The cleans are articulate and the overdrive is nice and organic. I have a Metroamp JTM45 kit that I built in 07 and there is something about this amp that just makes it feel like you and the amp are one. It is so responsive.
Great demonstration & upload, big thumbs-up. Amazing how this old, simple amp generates some of the most "timeless" tones :-) Always loved how easy it is to get those old Marshalls to jangle, growl, or roar with the simple manipulation of the guitar's vol. knob!
well,,i never was much of a marshall guy,,had a 50watt mark II,70`s,,when i was a kid,,,it did sound great but mainly fenders and a few vox amps that are great also along the path,,,but i gotta say i have no idea what all they did that was different in 65 in wiring these guys but this amp sounds truly incredible,,seems like there is perhaps a plethora of usable and just beautiful tones that would actually inspire one to dig in and play or lighten up as need be,,,i`m moved-and impressed -wow!!!!
I really like the way this demo shows the range of responsiveness to different touch, picking techniques, mild or aggressive attack. Great playing and a good demonstration.
Amazing tone like this is a canvas for the expression of the player, When you are ready to really do something with the guitar; you choose an amp and guitar that fits your style; who you are and what you want to say. Sams tone comes as much from the amp as from his soul. Love your passion Sam and the playing is great ,,, thanks for sharing ,,, guitar brother !!!
really enjoyed the demo and playing. sweet harmonics and really nice with the wah brother. would love to hear a '57 l.p.junior with the p-90 through that sucker, even an old '66 rickenbacher, and an old strat. unbelievable that anyone would leave negative comments. thats ignorance for 'ya. thanks for the demonstration.
Brian Williams what is great playing for you?gymnastics in the fret lifeless?all the people with so much hate never played a dry amp without fx in their entire life...and in adittion never did a vid...that it is a lot of job to give people and guitar players a gift with amps they never will play...he is playing without preparing nothing ...warm,,organic...i love it...you can see a lot of false superb players with ton of preliminar edition and a lot of hours of playing stuff before show...the important thing is the amp and interaction with ithe amp itself...not your player ego...
This is great! Although, I never watch your videos to get an idea of what a bit of gear sounds, I just come to listen to you noodle, because everything you play through sounds the exact same, you have such a unique sound! That is meant as nothing other than a compliment 😀
Haven't felt this calm in days That tone...is heaven...just hits me in that sweet spot...there aren't words to describe it... I am smiling like a five year old right now...God I love this amp Some great playing there too (Y)
The high-tech modeling amps of today are quite good, but they can't totally duplicate THAT sound. And I still can't understand why we can't just build tube amps that sound like that... I guess the old components are no longer produced.
does this have the Drake output transformer with the impedance selector on the transformer, or does this have the older RS Deluxe OT? sounds great either way :D
+Michael Craig They were made from mid- 1965 until the late spring of 1967. The have been reissued several time since then. As for the original production run, they very rarely come up for sale and when they do they usually go for between $17,500 and $30,000. A 1965 JTM45 PA is for sale on Reverb for $28,000 at this time. Marshall will sell you a hand wired reissue for about $3,500 and Metropolous Amps will sell you a very fine reproduction for $2,700 street.
+Augustine Nocera oh, and I almost forgot... Marshall also makes a model JTM45 2245 which is a printed board (not hand wired) version... Marshall boards are ok as far as these things go and for under $2,000 street these are very nice amps.
So expressive, and dynamic. And so is your amp. BTW, that sure does sound a lot like my 66 ( my tech and I know mine is not a kit amp either ) when played with 25W celestions. I noticed it just doesn't have that mojo when played with 65+W celestions, but then again you would have expected that. Either way, rock on, Garth.
ok there is a guy in the comments who says he'd rather have a JCM 800-...I LOVE Marshalls, but I've owned 3 JCM 800's and I HATED them....I've been playing JMP's from the 70's , 50 watts , for 30 years and I LOVE them...they sound like your amp...I have two , a '78 master volume and a '76 non-master -with 6550 output tubes....maybe a little noisier, but very similar with the bite and the dynamics...and LOUD.. I think it sounds really close-do you have any thoughts on this subject?....great playing BTW-
I agree! I have a 74 Superlead, and a 1986 JCM 800. The 800 sounds like a tin can compared to my SPL. Don't get me wrong, the 800's are great amps, but next to a NMV JMP, they are little boys.
shane17thsun yeah if it was ALL I could get for a REALLY LOUD gig I could make do...or if it was the second amp in a stereo set up onstage....but I'm fortunate to have the two JMP's....and the Non-master is truly a beast...it is SO much louder- for a while I had Kerry Livgren's (from Kansas) old superlead...and I think it was a 74...or 73....but it was just TOO loud...and now that I'm going DEAF...from the DRUMMERS....I like those little 18 watt and smaller heads....
That is the TONE. Well done. I'd like to hear that amp with some lower output pickups like Firebird, P-90, FilterTron or Mini Humbuckers like a Les Paul DeLuxe.
Killer man. I can hear that much. For the highs to come through so much... was your tone knob all the way up? Creambacks are darker than green. You should’ve picked it up and run away. Forever. Haha. Was it about your fave amp experience?
Sam Vilo I've found I much prefer a Y cable (or AB/Y box) as opposed to going in one and jumping out to the other. Did you try both and prefer the Y? Just curious. Great video!
Superb playing brother.great tone!...I know a nice JTM has a bit to do with it of course,Your amp is an outstanding example....are you attenuating this one at all? ie with a hotplate or...? thanks man, keep whalen!!
+rodkrell1 It's ear drum destroying loud sitting next to it. It just doesn't have the clean head room of a modern 100w amp, although Full 100w Stacks are dinosaurs these days.
in my opinion for a cathode follower amp such as this to get maximum gain all tone controls should be cranked since the tone stack is the last stage before the phase inverter, otherwise it will bypass some frequencies to ground
That's the classic tone along with the 67 Those 3 years Tone heaven I have the reissue 4/12 cab w lo wattage alnico's Brass logo Leather handles Very cool looking but a pain to move 😂
Doesn't it sound sweet. I love the clever way it's been filmed with the amp and player superimposed looks great. Also noodling by someone who can really play has a definite edge over just some amateur doing the same. Having lived 60 years or so it's really noticeable how the quality of everything has gradually deteriorated over the years. If you want a really good Les Paul or a Strat or a Marshall or Fender amp you need to pay the extra for the custom shop version or go the boutique amp way or worse buy some pedal that will give you that extra push over the cliff. The stock standard models don't cut the mustard, we are being ripped off.
john munker Hi Satriani, you must play like God. Uh no, just looking your YT page, so Megadeth are good, aren't them? Everything softer tan Metallica is crap right?
Wow........ Man you really need to practice ;-) Speechless... Might be the best sounding amp I've ever heard? Off to sell or throw all my gear away, taking up basketweaving...
What a sound. The cleans are just as beautiful as the overdrive. One day, I'm gonna have 100 acres with a house in the middle of it....with a JTM45 in the living room, and not an attenuator to be found :-P
Yoop!
15 acres will do... I always play that loud with my neighbor has his tractor in the field
What a sound... AND incredible soulfull playing 👌
Attenuators are the devil. Unless you want to preserve your hearing :) or lease agreement lol
That’s the dream.
Simply beautiful. I've watched this half a dozen times or so and I just can't get enough of that tone. One day...
I had to listen to this again today. I love it. It's better than going to church. That amp is like an old Steinway piano. The guitar sounds like every record I fell in love with from the early 70's. Your playing does justice. Thank you.

No pedal or modelling device give the taste of a real amp...This sound is from the heaven.
What a GREAT player!! He is clearly inspired by the tone of this amp and he is showing us a lot! This is one of the great amps of all time.
Hahaha I listen to these vintage amp clips instead of radio sometimes when its a player like this. The tone of a real guitar amp.. soothes the soul..
Dam*, you put it so nicely.
Great demonstration & upload, big thumbs-up. Amazing how this old, simple amp generates some of the most "timeless" tones :-) Always loved how easy it is to get those old Marshalls to jangle, growl, or roar with the simple manipulation of the guitar's vol. knob!
Thanks for sharing arguably the greatest distorted guitar sound ever.
well,,i never was much of a marshall guy,,had a 50watt mark II,70`s,,when i was a kid,,,it did sound great but mainly fenders and a few vox amps that are great also along the path,,,but i gotta say i have no idea what all they did that was different in 65 in wiring these guys but this amp sounds truly incredible,,seems like there is perhaps a plethora of usable and just beautiful tones that would actually inspire one to dig in and play or lighten up as need be,,,i`m moved-and impressed -wow!!!!
I really like the way this demo shows the range of responsiveness to different touch, picking techniques, mild or aggressive attack. Great playing and a good demonstration.
Beautiful! It's amazing how just a few changes to a vintage Bassman circuit can sound so much different.
One of the best demos ever, really enjoyed the playing! thanks

Incredible sounds. Stick that up your modeller.
Great amp!!! You did an equally great job highlighting the amps tonal palette. Very inspiring. Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
Anyone who doesn't appreciate this playing and tone should get a line 6 and prop their flying dean against it and watch wwe
Lol. Great comment. Exactly what I was thinking
Line 6 is basically just a good boat anchor, or good doorstop.
You lucky guy...
It´s not mine :(
Just for playing that amp u r lucky bro:)
At least I would feel so..:p
Sounds freakin legit! No doubt and one of the better examples I’ve heard. Thanks for this upload!
This is great! Although, I never watch your videos to get an idea of what a bit of gear sounds, I just come to listen to you noodle, because everything you play through sounds the exact same, you have such a unique sound! That is meant as nothing other than a compliment 😀
What an amp should sound and react like! Amazing!!
Haven't felt this calm in days
That tone...is heaven...just hits me in that sweet spot...there aren't words to describe it...
I am smiling like a five year old right now...God I love this amp
Some great playing there too
(Y)
Best demo of a JTM45 I've heard. Great playing too.
Beautiful tone I love it...... great playing too.......
This is the definition of TONE !!!
Great vid. Tone sounds amazing. Im looking at the 1973x combo. Love that old Marshall tone
Fantastic touch sensitivity. Very nice playing also.
Classic Marshall sound. Love it! Thanks for sharing!
Just Awesome .... Cant find the right words right now but this is the Best Amp Demo i have ever seen and heard !!
The proper way to run both channels, with a "Y" at the input, finally someone's doing it right !!!...
Is this not the best sound on UA-cam? This is benchmark tone. You can do so much with this.
Fun to watch! Always make playing look fun and always with the juciest ,grease dripping, chewy sound!
Beautiful tone bro ! waouw ! and your feeling is so great ! ;) Thanks !
Here that chime ? So real, so good. Thank you.
The high-tech modeling amps of today are quite good, but they can't totally duplicate THAT sound. And I still can't understand why we can't just build tube amps that sound like that... I guess the old components are no longer produced.
Once owned a guitar amp (which was a take on the JTM45 circuit), but it had 800v on the EL34 plates. Insane.
hey awesome tone! what tubes were in this beast? im about to get one myself but dont know if i should get the kt66 or el34 version. thanks!
Thanx bro, that was awesome to hear! Such a great amp, and your chops are equally as good!
What a sound dude. Very nice, sounds amazing.
does this have the Drake output transformer with the impedance selector on the transformer, or does this have the older RS Deluxe OT? sounds great either way :D
I dig how "Musical" you are (no vague noodling) GREAT DEMO!!!
when were these heads made? from what years to what years, and how much do they cost?
+Michael Craig

Either way, rock on, Garth.
Yeah man speaker distortion is part of the vintage Marshall formula
The dynamics, yes. That amp is alive
It's hard to tell, are all the knobs dimed?
Awesome. Revision: I would do very bad things to get my hands on one of those very silent amps.
I'm assuming the channels are jumpered. Sounds like there's not much background hum/hiss. Thanks for sharing!
Definition of TONE !!

a cranked JTM45 ist the best sound in the world!
Pretty sure that is the amp Chris squire used till the day he died.
That is the TONE. Well done. I'd like to hear that amp with some lower output pickups like Firebird, P-90, FilterTron or Mini Humbuckers like a Les Paul DeLuxe.
Is this without any type of overdrive on it? Just cranked? Sounds great.
Got some bluesbreakey tones coming out of there.
That's the best overdrive sound I have ever heard...transistorized pedals can't match that beautiful tone...
Great dynamics in the amp AND player
nice one sam,,,enjoyed that a lot...
Great tones! Do you have an ABY channel switcher connecting two channels of the head for a clean tone and cranked tone?
It was just a Y cable ...
Through a pair of Celestion Creamback 65's in a Bogner 2x12 cabinet, correct?
nevermind, I found Sam's comment below from 3 years ago. Yep - creamback 65's. Sounds great, fun playing, great tone, cool video. Love it.
Thanks...
Sounds like high plate voltage. Do you know what it is/was?
Hi, don't remember, sorry....
Killer man. I can hear that much.
For the highs to come through so much... was your tone knob all the way up? Creambacks are darker than green. You should’ve picked it up and run away. Forever. Haha. Was it about your fave amp experience?
Are you using a wah at around 5 min?
The tone... listen the tone. Heaven clouds with thunders.
That's some phat dirty tone send from the gods 😎🤟
Where Real Tone came from and where response to attack was born
What speakers are you playing thru?
What speakers ru using from Bogner in the 2-12 cab ru you jumping both channels of the Marshall JTM-45??
Celestion Creamback 65w´s, Y cable, thanks
Sam Vilo I've found I much prefer a Y cable (or AB/Y box) as opposed to going in one and jumping out to the other. Did you try both and prefer the Y? Just curious. Great video!
dickjonesify I did try both and prefer Y cable, thanks ...
Sam Vilo Sweet! Guess I'm not crazy then.
Which JTM45 is this? Could you share more details?
Well, it´s a Marshall JTM45 amp from 1965 :)
Wow because it sounds better than every other reissue clone on youtube. Cant beat the real thing I guess. Can you recommend a way I can get this amp?
Arjun Kaul Hmm, from Ebay maybe, expensive amps ...
Sam Vilo Yes ive been checking. Thanks and love your playing very much!
Great big tone that's spot on !
Is this similar to what Angus Young used?
Angus used JTM45s so I would assume so.
Are you a session guitarist Sam?
Superb playing brother.great tone!...I know a nice JTM has a bit to do with it of course,Your amp is an outstanding example....are you attenuating this one at all? ie with a hotplate or...? thanks man, keep whalen!!
Man. I would do very bad things to get my hands on one of those.
What speakers are being used here?
I think it was G12-65’s, not sure🧐
@@samviloguitar it's a great tone.
Wish I could buy this amp from you!
Suena muy lindo, espectacular!!!Tambien me gustaria saber que guitarra es???
Friedman
I'm guessing this particular amp requires a full stack to be run, in order to protect the transformers. Is that right?
The transformers should be fine as long as the speaker impedance is appropriate.
Nice playin, Question ? How loud is this amp before it starts to give up the goods ? like compared to a ab 165 ?
+rodkrell1 It's ear drum destroying loud sitting next to it. It just doesn't have the clean head room of a modern 100w amp, although Full 100w Stacks are dinosaurs these days.
+Jason Madoc sorry to bother you again, but thinking of buying one. Wondering this is the only Marshall with a tube rectification ? I like that sag
Great playing... wished you had played a Gibson Les Paul or a Fender Stratocaster through it though....
Great sound, kt66?
Wait wait wait... wheres the amp noise? Ive never played an amp at loud volumes that didnt produce at least a little noise. It cant be silent. Can it?
Yes it can, it´s very silent amp when cranked ...
Sam Vilo Hi, did you record this with the QUAD capture?
You Sir are a righteous dude!
Thanks
Was this with KT66 Tubes or EL34? :)
'65s use KT66. I don't think it's modded with EL34s. '89 reissues use 6L6 and the new non-tremolo 2245s use 5881. New 2245THWs use KT66
in my opinion for a cathode follower amp such as this to get maximum gain all tone controls should be cranked since the tone stack is the last stage before the phase inverter, otherwise it will bypass some frequencies to ground
Do a cathode bias to level 1
HOLY HELL that thing sounds good.
And in so many ways.
Fantastic tone.

You can call me Ray. You can call me "J", you can even call me Ray J Junior, but ya dosen't have to call me Jerry Garcia!
what wah was that ?
Thats it folks ......Love it..
