Man, Seth Rollins sure does play a mean guitar.
You got me!
Leon Todd how was NAMM?
Lol 🤣
Tried these settings on a hand wired JTM45 today...... ended up buying and taking it home. Great tips, thanks Leon. 😊
Easiest amp in the world to dial in... Everything set to 10. And Earplugs.
Uh, no...
Even everything on ten I’ll dile the bass down a little
@@dylandoge1627 exactly. Bass down!
I think this guy is thinking of a classic marshall '59 superlead
To the naysayers, just try it. Bass over 2 is unusable... unless its over 8. Try it. Come on.
Loving your vids. So much good Info. I’m amazed by how many guitarists don’t like to “play with the knobs”. So many differences by tweaking the guitar and amp!
The master at work! This was really helpful Leon. Thank-you!
Love it when you come across something better than you were looking for..cheers..
A true course on how to set up a JTM45. You're the one who teached me the most. Thank you.
Fantastic video primer for getting a classic Marshall tone from a JTM45! Really really appreciate the guidelines and ideas. Cheers!
I've had a JTM45 for a few months and have recently been playing through a load box and IR's as I have a 20 month old daughter. With my own tweakery, I was nearly there with the tone but not quite. Honestly at one point I wondered what all JTM45 the fuss was about as I was having to resort to my Tru-fi Colordriver to get where I wanted. This video has been absolutely brilliant. I now have the JTM tone of ages without pedals. Thanks so much Leon, a revelatory experience!!!
My pleasure mate, that makes me so happy to hear!
Wow, when the strat kicks in it's pure tone heaven
Long live the Strat!
You sir are an absolute lord! Very informative and incredible tone and playing. Lets see you light up that Soldano in the same fashion!
Man, posting my second comment after a day of practising your recommendations. You just opened up my mind and learnt me not being shy on how to set up a JTM45. Then a whole new world opened... Many thanks!
I just bought a JTM45 Reissue and this video not only helped me decide to buy it, but I have notes for the settings. In stead of chasing the Classic Marshall tone with amps, tubes and pedals, I just bought the real deal. AWESOME!!!
Keep me posted with how well all of this translates for you. Congratulations!
Leon Todd The tone is Amazing!! I was playing with someone who had a full rack system and the pure and simple tone that cam from my Strat into the JTM45 was powerful and rich! Great video brother !!
How do u use this amp at home? Volume? Clean amp + drive/dist pedals?
I got a jtm45 RI my friends love it when they plug in. It seems to accentuate every guitar that plugs into it and amplifies it's characteristics more than any other Marshall, and I've had a 1969 plexi 100 and various 1970's amps. I also got a 1977 2203 which is instant Angus.
Great video, really helped dialing in my 1987x (different design, similar architecture). As for speakers, I use differently voiced speakers in the same cabinet, provides the best of both worlds. I really believe speakers are overlooked many times as they make a huge difference in the final sound.
Also a good idea to fit all guitars with a treble-bleed R/C circuit.
Wow, what a sound! One of your best vids IMO so far. And you happen to know just the right classic riffs ;-) Especially love those creamy, purple & rainbow ones.
The late 60's to mid 70's was the golden era of the riff :D
Leon Todd hey Todd how can i hear your voice at 8:37?? Is the room mic capturing it or the speaker mic? Love your channel
My God you sound amazing, especially near the end when you hook up the Boss pedal. Smokin' hot playing! The combination of your playing and the Marshall and the Boss......well, enough said.
Much appreciated mate!
@@LeonTodd You bet! Cheers.
wow that thing sounds amazing. Nice playing!
EXCELLENT demo!! Letting the JTM45 do what it does best. Pretty good playing too Seth... Very well done
Hahaha I get the reference ;)
Good Stuff! Peace
This is so awesome of you to do this video. This fills a huge void of info out there on how to dial in an amp. I’m an AxeFx user, but I lack the basic understanding of a lot of the amp models. Cliff and Yek at Fractal have a bunch of info also, but not with an actual demo like you do. As I learn about more amps, I will check your channel first. I’ve subscribed to your channel - keep up the good work!
Plenty of amps AND Axe-Fx stuff here so you'll feel right at home :)
That guitar and amp is such a killer combo!
Simulated these settings in the AX-8. Whole new world. Thanks!
i stumbled upon this and your riff choices are just super classy af!!
Much appreciated! I do my best to include some gems.
Thank you for your videos! Very informative! I'm glad I'm stumbled across your channel.
Thanks for the feedback :)
Why good sir, you’ve played my two favorite Rainbow tunes! Bless you!
Rainbow had so many great riffs that it was hard to stop there ;)
Great tone, great playing, great video…thanks, Leon Todd
Thanks for taking the time to check it out.
🤘🏽🤓🤘🏽
Thank you for all of your efforts Leon. Just subscribed.
Welcome! If you have any questions about any other vids let me know :)
That sounds pretty damn awesome!
Great info! Love your tone ! JTM 45 is my next one . I got 1959 spl hw. Can’t go wrong with Marshall.
Very cool! Loving your Vintage Modern vids as well. Maybe a vid on dialing in the VM? Cheers!
Sounds like a good idea to me
Cool strat, my friend!
great sounding amp
Thank you 🙏 Leon
love your playing and tone, i have a plexi superlead 100 and love it!!!
I have one with kt66 valves and I play only stratocaster with it. Bass always at 0, max 3. This works. Now I understand why hendrix preferred strats.
My fav pedal platform 👍
The best advice (more like an order) I have heard from a guitar player. Thank you! Guitar needs all the mids turned to 10. Then dial in your treble and plug in that wah. DO IT. Peace bro.
This is an awesome video! Thank you, thank you! I didn’t know what to do with this hand-wired JTM45 I just traded for. Sounded just ok and I was thinking, why do even like this amp. Having the bass down on zero is genius. I got a good clean, slightly clean, edge of break-up, OD, and heavy OD sound with your suggested settings. Now I know why I like this amp.
Great to hear!
The 45 is an amazing platform man. Amazing cleans, amazing heavy. Great pedal platform
Hi Leon - awesome video! I‘m a long time subscriber btw... One question if you don‘t mind: Are you using the Apollo plugin preamps as Unison for full effect or just as regular Insert when recording mic‘d up? I‘m asking because I‘m using the optical out of my OX Box when recording real amps and by doing that I can only use preamp plugins in Apollo Console via Insert slot. Of course I could also go line out from the OX into my Apollo and use Unison functionality, but that would occupy both Inputs on it... Thanks man, keep up your great work
Far out man, sounds awesome 😊
Love it! Would REALLY love to hear that Hamer on your wall through this amp. \m/
These are great vids. Came across your channel randomly. Great vids on stuff I’ve always wondered about. Also, your band is great. Def recommend checking them out on Spotify or wherever. Good stuff!
Much appreciated, super stoked you like the tunes too
great vid Leon, thanks. I have a 50w plexi I've been struggling with now for a while, going into a 1960Av with GB's. Gonna have a rewatch on the weekend, see if I ca get it sounding nicer. Thanks again.
Keep me posted with how you go!
Holy crap, the plexi is just an insanely loud amp. I managed to get pretty much close to the sound you had from the JTM, but I fear either my bright cap is just a little too bright, or I'm using the wrong guitar (LP with 500T bridge and an Aldridge Suhr neck pup). Then again, as you said, no two Marshalls sound the same. Cranking it to your suggested levels gave me ... hhmmmm.... If you know the sound of the intro to Whitesnake's Restless Heart, that's pretty much the tone. (sorry about that 80's reference, but have a quick listen, it wont kill ya). And its a great sound from the amp alone! I honestly never knew I could get these tones from this amp..... but say goodbye to any clean tones (not that i care) :p. I will try again with a 490 equipped guitar later. Cheers.
Amazing, now I know how to dial a JTM45, although I'm using a Line6 modeling one, it's so useful.
The good thing about modelling nowadays is it's accurate enough to cop all these tricks
Great video. I do use a wound G string....it's a must have when going after the Stevie Ray Vaughan tone. 🎸👍🎸
Very nice brother!
In case anybody´s interested.
The tone stacks of guitar amps are SUBTRACTIVE!
That means their closest to neutral setting is EVERYTHING ON TEN!
Any other setting of any of the three bands means that you´re subtracting frequencies from your signal chain!
There is NO neutral setting of the tone pots of a passive tone stack in a guitar amp.
Dial them in accordingly.
Just for your information.
I thought this model had a cathode follower in the tone stack.
For British type amps, yes...sort of
@Rumy 73 there are essentially no amps with active tonestacks. Mesa Mark series amps have a post-preamp active solid state EQ, but it's not the tonestack.
@@rmv9194 hy rodridgo, yes i believe many marshalls have a cathode follower stage in the tonestack but still, the pots only bleed signal to ground, there is no amplification of frequencies dont matter where you set the pots. the cathode follower is not a gain stage either it only acts as a buffer because it has high input and low output resistance it easier drives the tonestack.
Ulf Danielsen huh. I actually didn’t know that. That’s fascinating. Very helpful
I love the punchy sound of the jtm 45, I was wondering is your amp a reissue jtm or a older vintage one? Great video by the way.
Leon states that it is a reissue at around the 30 second mark.
Which Greenbacks are you using? The G12M 25W 75 Hz or G12H 30W 55Hz or any others? And from which year is your cabinet or speakers? Thx!!! :)
I love the sound of JTM45 amps, you got it set really nice in this video but it must have been LOUD set like that lol
When you modded your bright cap you brought the value up or down?
Hi! Great video! Let me ask you... did you took off the bright cap?
I had it changed to a slightly lower value
wasnt too fussed when you used the les paul, sounded fabulous with the strat
Fender guitar plus a Fender style circuit is a great combo
Thanks Leon, I'd gotten to setting the amp a good part of the way myself. Liked the Volume in and around that 7 area +/- 1. Was setting the treble a little right of noon. And boosting the mids a bit to 2-3pm, and was keeping the bass really quite low, maybe around 2-3. But listening to this gave me some reassurance to push the mids further, and even go a bit lower on the bass if it sounds right. Also, I hadn't quite twigged that the presence introduced more of a gain tone. Which is useful to know.
I built a 1964 JTM45 clone a while ago and are actually going to change the 1M volume pots from linear to logarithmic. I should give more "dial range". Same issue with vol pots on guitars instead of feeling the pot going from 0 - 1 -10, a logarithmic pot opens gradually as I experience it.
6:22 it's based on a bassman so it kinda has a fender tone to it in the cleaner parts on the dial.
Thanks for the videos Leon. Very informative. Can the same logic be applied to a Bluesbreaker? I know the open back cab is going to change things but mine is a pcb RI and my tech has bypassed the trem circuit to bring it more in line with a JTM45. Just curious as I’m trying to better dial it in with my Les Pauls.
Same basic circuit with different speakers AFAIK so it should be cose!
Killer tones man, great vid!
Just found your vids today, props to you👍👍! BTW, any chance that gorgeous Hamer Sunburst on the right side is for sale?? She's exactly what I've been looking for regarding color, fret inlays, and bridge; the combo you have is not so easy to find!
Thanks for checking them out! Well spotted with the Hamer, that guitar took me a long time to find so i can certainly understand how you feel. Such a shame they went under :(
Nice demo, I shared it on my FB page dude! Les Paul, Strat, Boss SD1, Marshall JTM 45, JCM 2000 DSL50 and Soldano Hot Rod 50+ what could possibly go wrong?
Awesome video...At least could I understand how does this old Amps work
*_LP neck pup has left the chat_*
Dude, I use the D’Addario Jazz Lights 12-52 with a wound G for stoner rock.
Great demo.
BEAST! What tuning?
Oh know I understand I just saw your band. Killer
Cheers for checking it out!
Since Plexi's tend to be very bright they can benefit greatly from a Mullard ECC83 in V1 of the preamp. They are nice round sounding tubes
DSL50 would be cool. I am curious if you use the DSL as a channel switcher or just one channel? I struggle to balance the channels/modes on mine. All 4 of the modes/channels are great but I find I need to dial them in all differently.
Everything on 7 is a good place to start with a dsl 100 then tune it to the room. I use the higher gain setting on both channels and covers a ton of ground while being a great platform for pedals.
That's how I used to run mine funnily enough. I'll do a vid with it to go over some of the quirks those amps have, should be fun
i just got an amp called a MIG-50. it's a 59 bassman-like circuit, which itself is very much "like" a jtm45, anyway, i am definitely going to try setting it up along these lines. this is super helpful .
Sovtek? Great amp
I've also got the MIG-50 - the EHX version. The preamp is actually somewhere between lead and bass (JTM45) spec. V1 is split cathode like a lead preamp, but the tone stack has the bass values. Unbeatable price new in the US.
@@100DollarHeadache I’m so glad to hear other people discovering/using these amps. They are amazing
@@SimAlex20000 I guess part of why they're not as well known is that the EHX production run around 2016-2017 seems to have been quite limited. They seem to have returned in 2021. As I also have the Marshall SV20H which is the lead spec, I converted the V1 on my MIG-50 to shared cathode - snip R18 and connect pins 3 and 8. I also put the mixer cap on a toggle switch - JTM45 has it and 5F6A doesn't. For cleans, along with bass use with an appropriate cabinet, I like the mixer cap off.
Having owned Marshall amplifiers since 1987 (several JCM 800 2205 and 2210) and currently a Marshall Astoria Dual, I’ve always got a good guitar tone. Now I got a great tone. I’ve been watching UA-cam videos since the very start, but finally someone explained this in a good way. The only difference I do on my Astoria, is turning the master volume to 10, and the adjust volume (both clean and OD) to wanted loudness level. It opens up the amp completely, and it’s a mystery for me that Marshall does not include videos like this on their official websites. My main go-to pedal has the last 10 years been a Keeley TS 808, which of course sounds nice, and I still use it when playing my strat for some SRV and John Mayer lead tones, but for my Les Paul I only use a Strange master treble booster for those saturated over the top Gary Moore sound. For Angus Young leads I add on a MXR dynacomp compressor. Sounds heavenly😀😀😀
That dual sounds awesome from videos Iv checked but they are almost impossible to find and wildly expensive now
Great video Leon.Make a Soldano next time!
Absolutely Mega.
Hi. Is it a treble bleed on the guitar? Or 50s style wiring? Thanks
Parabéns... Very cool, amazing sound.... Fender´s sound kick ass kkk
Beauty!
I have Chinese Vintage 30's and I've seen a comparison video of the UK Vs Chinese and i actually liie the Chinese better because they are a tinge brighter 👍
Gracias!Tus videos son excelentes!!!!
Sounds good Do you have any tips for JCM800s Very bright so pretty sure there is a modd for that Thanks
that brightness is due to the bright cap - you can swap it for a different value, remove it or crank the master and gain to negate it's influence.
Hello Leon! I use a JTM45 style amp. I use a wound G (open G tuning) and my Strat in std tuning goes 10 to 38!
I bet that sounds huge
Leon Todd well.... a 38 low E is very interesting. Clear, funky and trippy in a 60s way.
Hendrix gauge
Yeah, cool video really liked it
Hope it helps :)
Did you remove the bright cap from that amp?
DOPE🧨
Nice video!!! Nice presentation of sound!!! I would add Gibson Flying V corina (with thin amp is killer).;)
Thats my tone you just made me grit my teeth man awesome LOL
I know the exact feeling you're talking about; digging the pick into a thick power chord and feeling the amp bark back at you.
Danke!
Too kind, thankyou!
Do they use KT66 power amp valves in these now? My 1990 came with 6L6 GC's same as the Fender Bassman the JTM45 is a copy of, or at least, a souped-up 6L6. No saggy bass there, like comments here mention. Mine has a huge, clean, burnished sound with way less distortion than here, which I like as I use a pedal (Boss Turbo Overdrive - 1992 -turbo off) as my main rhythm sound with no volume difference to the clean tone, so not driving the amp. The amp just warms it up and gives it more class. I don't like how small valves clip and compress the signal when driven, as expressive headroom is lost. Solid state distortion/overdrive is just more forgiving, provided you don't overdo it., of course. Not pushing the front end of the amp too much or setting its gain so high all the headroom is lost means you've got room if you need more volume. As you mentioned, once the amp is saturated it doesn't get any louder. I have to reiterate though, mine is WAY cleaner.
Not sure. Kt66's definitely sounds gorgeous in them though.
@@LeonTodd It's a different sound for sure. 6L6'S sound more vintage I guess. Definitely more Fender-ish. The stock 6L6 GC's were fine but I stocked up on Mesa Boogie 6L6 GC's packaged for them by Groove Tubes, I think. The bottom end is full and bell - like, as you'd expect from an amp derived from a bass amp. The JTM45 is a fantastic pedal platform and I purchased it with that end use in mind. It's shortly, I hope to see the light of day after too many years in storage. Hope it's alright.
no one can come close to blackmore on made in japan, or the engl combo sovereigns either cause he had that great tone thru experimentation etc,an good ears an a great brain...
Question :the ohm selector slotted rotary switch on my new Marshall JTM45 can be rotated past the desired 4/8/16 ohm selection. In fact it can be rotated in full 360 deg. circles in both CW and CCW directions as many times as I wish to rotate it. Is my switch faulty?
I have the red mark aligned with the indicated 4 ohm to match my 4 ohm speaker load. It bothers me that I can rotate the slotted selector round and round and round. Please can you help me understand what's going on? Is your amp the same way?
Peter.
Mine doesn't do that. Take it to a tech and get them to have a look.
You should also review LO sinsitivity input, not only "upper left" input like many others.
The Malcolm Young channel!
Can you test it with a Strat, I would like to see if this amp gets some serious Hendrix style tones.
13:00
Are there any Marshall combo amps that get a real blistering plexi tone, that can be used at gigs thee days? Apparently you got to crank a plexi head and cab up way too much to get a good tone, and cant use it in a bar or club anymore, is that correct? If that is so, what combos can get that monster plexi tone with the correct bar and club volume?
I'm going to add your questions to my weekly Q&A which will be out later today ;)
@@LeonTodd I dont want a modern sounding Marshall.. Just want a JTM-45 or 1959, that I can get a good tone from without having to crank it all the way..and maybe effects loop if possible. Does such an amp exist? I mean why cant I put on a master volume after I get it? Would that hurt it, or wreck the tone, or something? How does JTM-45 and 1959 compare to the Fender Bassman from about 1966? Can you put the jumper wire to get the heavier tone of both channels, with the Bassman?
You have any fender amps
The manufacturing IS the one country doing it better! What else would it be?
Upvote for Rainbow riffs!!
the cord also makes a huge difference a quality cord can allow up to 200% more signal volume compared to a crap cord. That and heavier strings pushing a stronger signal are a good place to start for building tone. amps are limited to what you give it for a passive signal. It can make the difference between strong and weak tone revealing itself every time a big bend is struck on crappy 10s through umpteen patch cables.
I use a wound 3rd or g. 13 56 Bb 🤘🤘
Are you sure it's not modded? Is it a reissue? It sounds gainier than any super lead I've played and those JTMs are supposed to be way cleaner. Could it be those Greenbacks?
It's a reissue, correct. Might be the tubes I'm using.
What tubes are you using Todd?
@@LeonTodd
@ box88. The reissued JTM45 has 5881 in output section like the original 1963 offset. I point to point assembled a 1964 model with shared cathode and Dagnall 0002 mod power trafo. It's made to power KT66 output tubes and has a Miniwatt GZ34 rectifier tube.
The difference between production in one country or another is mostly the wages to make the gear, but also in buying a US or UK made piece of gear there's likely to be a level of cherry picking that you wouldn't quite get from Indonesia, Korea, or China.
Is this the same amp as 1987x?
"Set the middle to 10... DO it!" Lmao.
Do these re-issues have a master volume, what about a pre-amp? What about effects loop? I am trying to learn all this Marshall stuff.
Just like the original, there's just volume, bass, middle, treble and presence controls
@@LeonTodd Can you get them with the things I mentioned?
@@michaelcraig9449 a JTM45 with all those features isn't a JTM45 anymore. I'd suggest checking out the DSL50 if you're after great Marshall tones with modern features at a decent price point.
Michael Craig - I think I saw where you said in a previous comment that you are a new player. UNLESS you have your own home and live alone, this is not a good first guitar amp. They do not have a master volume. So, to get a saturated, distorted sound, you have to have the volume at around 6 or above (two o-clock or greater). This will be VERY loud. Even the 50 watt heads are very loud. NOTE: Leon said his speaker cab was in another room. Unless you are using an attenuator (Hot Plate) to control the volume to the cab, while this is a great amp, the amp is impractical due to its volume.
@@michaelcraig9449 I am having a guy in Louisiana build me a JTM45 with a PPIMV and a Metropoulis zero loss fx loop. He is also building it with a SS rectifier help tighten the low end. I can still pop in a tube rectifier with a bias adjustment. Watching every JTM45 vid I ca. Leon, thanks for all of the information you provide. Excellent examples and you are a humble presenter.
I've got the same three amps
