  • Typesetting, book layout, book interior design - it goes by different names probably because it's a far more complex part of the book publishing process than most people realize. Many authors think they need to lay their book out in Word so it looks good. Others try using free tools on Amazon KDP to upload their book. Ultimately, if you care about your reader experience and you want to produce a book that is extremely professional, you need to understand what is involved in a professional design. In this video Julie Broad, author and founder of Book Launchers explains all the essentials you need to understand about book layout whether you're doing it yourself or hiring a professional.

    Sweet Jesus, thank you. Typography, spacing and even the subtle details of the individual letters like ligatures, bowls and loops, ascenders and descenders, and YES, orphans and widows(!) make or break the layout of a book.

    This is what I do: I'm not saying its best practice but I write about highly technical non-fiction topics where my qualifications are more important than formatting.
    1. Ragged Right. Unless you kern and check for bad hyphenation your automatic right justification will suck.
    2. CENTERED page numbers, not mirror image. This is because edits may change my left page into a right page.
    3. CENTERED headers, not mirrors. Then I don't have a sea of white space at the top. Author name and title of book. Or not at all. Sometimes I simply omit headers.
    Single spaced TWELVE point times new roman. 6x9.
    This leads to a book which while NOT the best layout is nonetheless competent.

    • @QuizmasterLaw
      @QuizmasterLaw Рік тому +1

      another reason for right ragged is to avoid "rivers" of white space flowing through your paragraphs.
      and yeah, non-indented paragraphs with leading blank line for non fiction, indented for fiction with no leading blank line.
      .79 all around margins. These are all quick and dirty settings. It's not that i recommend it but I think it results in an acceptable book which is fairly easy to make.

    LOVEEEEE this!!! Your videos are SOOO HELPFUL! Question~ when formatting a book for the interior it seems some books have spacing between paragraphs and some don't. Is there a preference for readability? Or is it just a personal choice?

    • @BookLaunchers

      Personal choice ... there can be reasons for it like more white space which is easier on the eyes but it will be a personal choice you make with the designer.

      with poetry or really any artsy fiction book you have enormous liberty which you must use with greatest care.
      For your print book pdf is great on amazon
      For your kindle though you're stuck using docx BECAUSE kindle is reflowable. You've no idea how big or small that device window will be. If someone wanted to argue eBooks suck that would be a good claim.Amazon doesn't let you submit 4 different interiors for e.g. small phone, large phone, standard tablet, standard computer. But you would require such for non-reflowable formats which almost always read better than reflowable.
      SO I use ebooks as ads for my print books and expect print books to survive digitization.
