  • Typesetting your self-published book is now more important than ever before. People will be reading your book on multiple devices from a Kindle, Nook, Desktop, iPhone as well as printed version. In order to make sure your book is beautiful you need to invest in typesetting or book page composition as it is termed in the industry.
We cover the top 10 rules of typesetting which are as follows:
    1. Paragraph Alignment: Justified is best
    2. Margins: Allow for the bookbinding
    3. Font: Choose a serif font
    4. Set Up the Book Block: Line Alignment
    5. Eliminate Widows and Orphans
    6. Watch for Word Widows
    7. Format Special Characters Properly: Ellipses, quotation marks and trademarks
    8. Paragraph Spacing and Indentation
    9. Word Spacing Should Be Even
    10. Take Care of Word Stacks

Excellent knowledge for those who are self-publishing a book, or even working with a publisher such as ourselves. The more the author understands - even if they are not DIYing it - the easier our job becomes!

Thanks for the video, but a visual comparison of when the rules are applied and ignored would be helpful as some of these are abstract. I have a feeling I might be misunderstanding what you're trying to say as well without them.
For example, you have block text and then show a blurry image of someone reading a book. Am I supposed to derive something from that?
Second, how do you reconsile justified text with the word spacing? Justified makes some spaces much larger than others. So I'm pretty sure I'm misunderstanding this part.

Thanks for watching! This is really more of a high level overview. Yes, maybe another video with some more examples would be good. I focus a bit more on marketing content now but maybe will do a V2 of this video in the future.

I had the same thought. I went to google to find visual examples for most of the rules mentioned to have a better understanding of what OP was referring to
