The thing that I like about this video is that it treats Blast Beats as a legitimate beat within the discourse of drumming. So often many drum instructionals either don't know what Blast Beats are or treat them as primitive or inferior. So thank you guys for treating Blasts as legitimate.
And I would add that I would like to see more peripheral or underground beats presented on the show. For example, the "D-beat" (also known as the "Discharge beat" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-beat) is also largely ignored or debased within the context of drum education and there is a rich and long history surrounding the rhythmic feel it presents. Heck, I'll be your guest drummer for that episode! haha
Last, maybe some episodes on music philosophy. Specifically, I'd like to hear some discussion about how different musical genres effect different emotions and what maybe the ethical implications of these ways of feeling are. This is of course more high brow. But sometimes people get a little lost in technique and forget that music is a way of communicating moods and lifestyles, and that's one of it's most powerful aspects. Anyway, thanks guys!

Right? and in the beginning we can clearly see he's mixing some latin and samba within his blast beats. Which is incredible.

Best thing i like about drumeo has to be the fact that it sparks the interst of many new and eager drummers. Your videos are made so that anyone can understand, regardless of their experience. I've been drumming for 13 years now and I find myself watching the videos just to brush up on some basics and get inspiration. Keep up the great work !

Thanks for this great drum lesson! Drumeo is a tremendous learning tool for the drumming community. I love their crawl-walk-run teaching style that progressively takes drummers to their next level no matter the individual drummer's starting point. I learn something new each time I watch one of their drum instructors because they all have unique styles and backgrounds. Dave A. does a tremendous job as the continuity instructor and tying it all together. You guys are awesome!

the best live drummer that I have seen is Dave McGraw from cattle decapitation. He is amazingly fast and plays everything so solid. Its one thing to hear it on the album but to hear it live is another thing.

I think this kind of thing is the future of drum education. I took lessons from four teachers in the traditional sense; each had their preferred styles of playing and instruction, and none of them were ever really a good fit. Having this kind of a lesson structure, range of instruction and community knowledge base is valuable, and if I had the time to commit to fully appreciate something like this these days, I would definitely subscribe.

one of the many cool things about drumeo (and freedrumlessons) is that topics are presented in different ways. there are other videos on the site that will teach you how to increase your speed but this video presents it from a metal perspective. and the "army" of instructors constantly keep things interesting. i'm a more "mature" female student with a full time job...i took up drumming because of drumeo....this method is very comfortable for me and works perfectly with my crazy schedule. thx!

Thanks heaps for the lesson guys, I've really been wanting to learn more about blast beats! I saw Derek Roddy at a drum clinic last month where I was introduced to blast beats and the content covered in Sean's lesson was exactly what I needed. I couldn't catch the lesson live so I appreciate you guys putting the vid up for us and especially providing sheet music for your lessons. The last song Sean played was freaking awesome! Cheers guys, stay metal \m/

  • @Voyaging123

    There are two main ways.
1: They muffle the bass drum, often by putting a pillow inside resting against both heads. This will limit the resonance and make the sound shorter and clickier.
    2. Triggers. These are electronic devices that register any time you hit the bass drum and send a sample sound of your choice through the PA/into the recording device. You can use a prerecorded bass drum as the sample sound.
Also, using a kickpad on the bass head and a harder beater (rubber) can help.

DANTVSVERGIL you said "he was badass at the age of 12" to counter the statement "the best weren't great when they started", which implies that you're saying he started at 12, or else your comment wouldn't counter that statement. The other commenter was just pointing this out. You probably didn't mean that the guy started at 12, but when used to counter the original statement, it sounds kinda like that. Hope this helps! *braces for angry reply*

Head type will also strongly affect the tone. The Evans EMAD, for example, often gives that sort of "marching band" sound in many cases. The Remo Powerstroke 3 is my choice for that punchy metal sound.
Also tune your batter head fairly loose and reso head slightly tighter.
Keep in mind though that in this video the drum is mic'd, probably from the inside via a port hole, which strongly pronounces the attack of the beater.

I think you guys should do a lesson on understanding drums for beginners. For example when I started a year and a half ago, I didn't know anything about what drums were good and what weren't. Drums are just drums to beginners and ppl that don't play drums and also I thought that as long as cymbals were straight they were good and I didn't know what sticks were good or anything. I don't personally need this lesson but I wish I had known a lot about drums like this when I started
