No matter what exercise I look at, there's always this physical barrier keeping me from getting to the speeds I desire. I thought practice and muscle memory would be the hardest, but it's definitely the patience and/or perseverance that's the hardest to get through.
Nothing sucks more than being an established single pedal player and then deciding to try and get good at double pedal. It’s like sucking at drums all over again, relearning the instrument as if I never learned it to begin with.
Getting fast with double bass it’s just of matter of constant repetition. After so much practice, you’ll be able to separate the hands from the feet and play those sweet Polly rhythms, I wish every teacher will admit that your gonna need over 1000 hours of practice just to sound right. Just practice!!!! While your struggling drumming your ass off your friends are all out having fun, but then you’ll blow them away with the skills trust me
Dude, man I need serious help, aside from the fact that i got to pro alpy get a rug under my entire setup to keep it from sliding, I want to be able to do triple strokes w each foot, interlaced, I guess it would be similar to heel toe, I v play heal down my whole practice "career", but didn't play for a while, like ten years, is there a way to skip the whole, double stroke, heel toe, deal, and get to fast interspliced triplets, "foot muller", I like the the thrown stability that heal down offers too. BEST wishes...
Really helpful lesson . If I can add to the second exersise: When you reach the 32nd notes, instead of returning right to the begining, try to decend the note scale. Like this: 4 - 8 - 8/3 - 16 -16/3 - 32 - 16/3 - 16 - 8/3 - 8 - 4. This way you are getting used to not only accelerating the speed but to slowing it down as well and it is really helpful. Cheers!
That second exercise reminds me of the part in The Grudge by Tool where Danny keeps adding notes to the base pedal like you did. Awesome exercises and overall a great video!
Great video! I just want to add one thing: leg exercises, off the kit. Especially calf raises. Before I sit down to practice I grab a 20lb dumbbell, do 20 calf raises (hold each rep up top for 2-3 seconds), then I do 20 more as fast as I comfortably can. After that try them one leg at a time while bending your knee at the top of each rep (feels like running in place but your toes don’t leave the ground). To end it, do 20 more, one leg at a time starting each rep on your toes (instead of heel to toe, you’ll be going toe to heel). If you do them right you will definitely feel it by the end, add or remove weight, or adjust the number of reps as needed. It’s a good idea to stretch first. If you go to the gym don’t skip leg day. This has helped my drumming in so many ways. It improves balance, coordination, strength, endurance, and speed. Another good one if you still need to work on isolating your calves is to sit on your throne (away from the pedals), lift your heels a couple inches above the ground and do sixteenths with your feet for however long you want.
These exercises are amazing!! Have been trying to double pedal for just over a year but broke my left ankle (my weak foot) making it almost impossible for a very long time. Have just tried these exercises once and I can was then able to play along to a song with 150bpm double pedalling with not too much effort!!! These exercises are amazing!!!
I cant even do the bass drum with my hands to the beat in the first lesson.. i will not allow his talent to stop me from trying. Ash pearson , i wil play recovation one day. Fyi i met you in toronto at the opera house few years back. You guyz rock live seen you twice. Only met you once. Met dave twice 😁 but your one of my fav drummers dude. Your god to me. I wont give up on my drums even if its only been 3 months since i started.
Smart. Recently I play etudes with both hands and feet on unison. I guess the effect is the same as playing stick control. It really helps in precision and control. :).
When I do this, I add two bars of quarter note triplets, between the quarter note and eighth note bars. Quarter note triplets are another good challenge to your coordination.
your DB drum shoes look like they've seen better days. haha. i've had mine for years and the glue is coming apart on the soles now. gotta get some shoegoo
I would strongly encourage people to reverse the order of the note scale progression to better improve their accuracy with both feet, In other words, do the right foot/left foot stuff first, then the incremental double bass patterns with both feet. This makes for a great warm up. Each to their own of course, but I find concentrating on warming up individual limbs to be much better that trying to do everything at once.
ive got a speed corbra db pedal. im having a hard time finding the perfect spring tension. i know its a great pedal and it really reveals how much more db practice i need haha
I have my good days where I surprise myself and play for example slayer angel of death speed and other days I can barely play a7x nightmare. It is super frustrating that I know I can do it its just a matter of keeping relaxed and keeping that patience. As soon as I'm up to speed I'll tense up for no reason and I'm trying to figure out how to stay calm
I need a double kick pedal.. I know people scoff at blaming the pedal but man mine sucks baaaaaaaad. Got it second hand from my bros bands drummer.. Duck taped and worn springs.. Slave pedal only tensions to a point and when its at that point its twice as close to the head than the other.. really sucks and hampering my development .. but i use it anyways..
This lesson has helped me more than anything else. Can I ask someone to explain why heel up may be better for t double bass drum techniques? Or if this is true? Thank you!
George Kollias of Nile actually said that while Heel up has speed, Heel down has control. He then combined the two into a single foot technique called modern heel up. While you set your foot lower, you still have your heel off of the base plate. This allows a perfect balance between speed and control. However, if you want to go fast enough to give Adam Muraszko a run for his money, you should learn the swivel technique.
What advice would you give to help getting the hand independance during those kind of exercices? I can't play the first exercice with my hand while my feet are doing their things
I think some hi hat pedals have an option to lock it in place while you use double kick. Cool technology but also gives you something else to think about while playing if you want the open hat, I think some players also have two pairs of hats for that variety.
Are you huys spring tensions loose or tight? I know alot of drummers pedals are loose but for me i cant seem to have control of my kicks because guitar center made it so damn loose
If you wanna play fast double bass, keep your tension tight so that the pedal can instantly fly back to your foot. Just don't have your tension too tight, especially as a beginner, or you'll be fighting against your pedal way more than you really need to. I learned this the hard way while in a practice room.
Hi bro. Thanks for the exercises. They are very usefull. I have a question: which drums are you using? And what is the name of the color? That bright red is amazing. ImI
I've been playing double bass for about 10 years now, however I seem to actually be getting much slower. I don't understand and it's VERY frustrating. Speeds that I used to play for periods of time 4 years ago are WAY beyond my ability now and after playing for 20-30 minutes I struggle to keep up with 16th notes even at 120bpm. I use $800 Axis AL-2 Long Boards which are the best pedals out there, and have tried HUNDREDS of different tensions but nothing seems to work. I used to be able to control 16th notes at 160bpm for minutes and now I can't go anywhere near that. I just can't help but think there has to be SOMETHING I can change as there are beginner drummers who can play these speeds no problem. My hand technique is way ahead but that means nothing if my feet can't keep up. I can keep up with 8th notes on both my right and my left foot up to 140bpm but trying to alternate my feet just DON'T WORK. Has anybody else ever encountered this?
No matter what exercise I look at, there's always this physical barrier keeping me from getting to the speeds I desire. I thought practice and muscle memory would be the hardest, but it's definitely the patience and/or perseverance that's the hardest to get through.
How's it going with that? cuz i'm def having a hard time with that as well yeah
I hear ya!
I’m barely doing 130 bpm at a steady pace 😫
Nothing sucks more than being an established single pedal player and then deciding to try and get good at double pedal. It’s like sucking at drums all over again, relearning the instrument as if I never learned it to begin with.
Totally. For me my balance is such a struggle, feel as im tilting off the chair every second!
Getting fast with double bass it’s just of matter of constant repetition. After so much practice, you’ll be able to separate the hands from the feet and play those sweet Polly rhythms, I wish every teacher will admit that your gonna need over 1000 hours of practice just to sound right.

Practice *correctly*
Dude, man I need serious help, aside from the fact that i got to pro alpy get a rug under my entire setup to keep it from sliding, I want to be able to do triple strokes w each foot, interlaced, I guess it would be similar to heel toe, I v play heal down my whole practice "career", but didn't play for a while, like ten years, is there a way to skip the whole, double stroke, heel toe, deal, and get to fast interspliced triplets, "foot muller", I like the the thrown stability that heal down offers too. Right on
It's darn hard to keep my hands slow and the feet fast.
Volume isn’t enough; you have to practice the right way. Practice makes permanent, not perfect.
Really helpful lesson

Martin Kirilov ok thats a super great idea! I will try that
HAHA YOU FORGOT 4\3
just kiddin
Yep, I saw Derek Roddy introducing this exercise 👌
wow that was actually really impressive and the triplets on the left were groove
That second exercise reminds me of the part in The Grudge by Tool where Danny keeps adding notes to the base pedal like you did. Awesome exercises and overall a great video!
that part is marvelous, danny picked an exercise and made it make sense musically. Awesome.
Hands down the best double bass warm up/tutorial I've seen
Great video! I just want to add one thing: leg exercises, off the kit. Especially calf raises. Ash is great. I hope he will keep doing this lessons.
Altay Bayraktar heryerdesin knk dkdjsksndnzj
Altay Bayraktar my thoughts exactly
HOLD SHIFT!!!!!!!!!!
I never thought that revocation's drummer would be giving the lesson, instant like!!!
These exercises are amazing!! Have been trying to double pedal for just over a year but broke my left ankle (my weak foot) making it almost impossible for a very long time. I always had a lot of problems with double bass notes. this helps really good.
This was SUPER helpful. I did this with my hands, but never with my feet. Thanks so much!
I cant even do the bass drum with my hands to the beat in the first lesson.. i will not allow his talent to stop me from trying. Ash pearson , i wil play recovation one day. Ash shreds so hard, his right shoe has a hole in the side - DAMN! Awesome tutorial
This is easily the best double bass lesson I've ever seen.
Smart. Recently I play etudes with both hands and feet on unison. I guess the effect is the same as playing stick control. It really helps in precision and control. :).
Yeah! Finally something that I need :) . Btw, that pyramid with left food is so perfect!
Great exercises that sound cool too! The unilateral triplets are very Bonham-esque.
A really neat, easy and working excerise - thank you!
You are super good and also a very good teacher thanks Ash !
most hardcore intro ever ! Great lesson
I've been having trouble with my left foot control in double bass drumming but this lesson was very helpful! Thanks a lot!
This is definitely his most helpful lesson yet, definitely gonna try this on the kit!
For how long time do you recommend each excercise? And how much you speed up the tempo?
When I do this, I add two bars of quarter note triplets, between the quarter note and eighth note bars. Quarter note triplets are another good challenge to your coordination.
Ash is such a beast. Great video
wow didnt expect to hear profanum vulgus at the end such an awesome song
that is some freaking drum and cymbal sound. spot on what i like.
Watching him do that rhythmic scale check pattern thing on both feet was god tier
Thanks for getting Ash! Awesome drummer in an awesome band!
your DB drum shoes look like they've seen better days. haha. i've had mine for years and the glue is coming apart on the soles now. gotta get some shoegoo
I liked his symmetry concept! Thanks a lot.
Showww Ash!! This exercise is very important.
7:28 idk why but I just bursted out laughing here
That kick drum sound though!!!!!
thank you this is one of the most helpfull videos awsome
this kick sounds thunderous
It’s crazy watching these exercises I was doing this stuff when I was a kid wish UA-cam was around than lol.
The left foot only was trippy. Crazy to see how they sound so different when fitting in the same measure.
Awesome. Great practice routine and drill. Thanks
Perfect! Thank you

ive got a speed corbra db pedal. im having a hard time finding the perfect spring tension. i know its a great pedal and it really reveals how much more db practice i need haha
what was the sensibility he used in his roland TM-2 module?
I would like to know that please.. :D
Perfect foot technique!
This was awesome! Great info and patterns!!
I needed this excercise
Those 32nd note up -beats with the left foot are a good challenge. It's hard to keep that pulse going
Amazing! Well Explained! Thank you for sharing this with us! :)
Amazing exercise... Thanx
Love how that intro could have been metal or pop punk.
Ash rules. Thanks for the great content.
Thank you Ash. Nice ideas!
1:40 3:41
What kind of shoes are you using?
Great teaching skills
Damn! Respect.....isolating that left foot seemed very difficult :O
WE NEED JON THEODORE PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. YOU WOULD MAKE A LOT O PEOPLE SOOOOO HAPPY.
I have my good days where I surprise myself and play for example slayer angel of death speed and other days I can barely play a7x nightmare. It is super frustrating that I know I can do it its just a matter of keeping relaxed and keeping that patience. As soon as I'm up to speed I'll tense up for no reason and I'm trying to figure out how to stay calm
aweeeeesome lessons! thanks for that!
Wonderfull exercises !! Helped me alot !🤘
Any ideas why it's worth learning paradiddle patterns on double bass?
same reason why you learn it on the hands. treat the feet like how you treat the hands
He said it's to develop symmetry with your feet so you can lead with either foot
Great lesson.
Love it. Thanks for the video
4:10. Tool anyone? How good is a band that takes a normal rudiment and makes it into a song
I need a double kick pedal.. I know people scoff at blaming the pedal but man mine sucks baaaaaaaad. Got it second hand from my bros bands drummer.. Duck taped and worn springs.. Slave pedal only tensions to a point and when its at that point its twice as close to the head than the other.. really sucks and hampering my development .. but i use it anyways..
lol! yes.. I dont take them out in public.. Im close to zzound-ing some Pearl Eliminators..
Can you take the slave off the rod and position it back at all ?? That may help even things out a bit.
Heel up is better for power if you're playing fast.
Playing heel up lets you utilize your hip flexors when playing double bass.
Amazing video. Thank you so much.
This dude fuckin rules. tight, powerful and accented
What is the best foot technique ? I mean theres heel up , heel toe , ankle etc. I dont know where to start.
3:45 is the start of the alternating foot drill.
This is for my sake as much as anyone else’s.
Seems like a genuinely cool dude.
you are good drummer
Excellent.
What advice would you give to help getting the hand independance during those kind of exercices?
I can't play the first exercice with my hand while my feet are doing their things
Try to figure out which bass drum hit will come with which snare or hi hat hit. This will be done automatically in your head after a while.
Really good man thanks God Bless
I'm so pleased to see you can't do perfect left foot exercise. Make me feel releaf. I can hardly do it too.
What kind of shoes are they I play barefoot but don’t always feel comfortable depending on what room I play
When are they going to give away the Eric Moore sticks or did they already do that
Sorry if this seems like a really dumb question, but when using the left foot to play the bass drum, how do you keep the hi-hats closed?
I think some hi hat pedals have an option to lock it in place while you use double kick. Cool technology but also gives you something else to think about while playing if you want the open hat, I think some players also have two pairs of hats for that variety.
The first groove is just like Kill The King from megadeth :v
Me ganaste we :v
I thought that as well 😂
Are you huys spring tensions loose or tight? I know alot of drummers pedals are loose but for me i cant seem to have control of my kicks because guitar center made it so damn loose
*guys
A lot of metal drummers set tesions to maximum.
Art Hazard is maximum tight?
Yep
If you wanna play fast double bass, keep your tension tight so that the pedal can instantly fly back to your foot. Just don't have your tension too tight, especially as a beginner, or you'll be fighting against your pedal way more than you really need to. I learned this the hard way while in a practice room.
Hi bro. Thanks for the exercises. They are very usefull. I have a question: which drums are you using? And what is the name of the color? That bright red is amazing. ImI
does anyone know what that's called for what he uses to mount the toms???
Great work out, thnx
Those grooves sound like new Revocation material
Lesson one sounds like kill the king by Megadeth. Sick
Exelente leccion!
great video!
Very Neat!
what double pedal is he using? the tama iron cobra?
btw Revocation rules
this fukkin rules, btw is that Profanum Vulgus on the last?
i dont even have drums but i watch your videos.

iPlayDrums4You I am currently too. I'm not sure why I'm in a rut now either.
Yes it sucks.
My dude hittin the double bass so hardnhe done busted out his right shoe
Can I do the exercise without pedal? 'Cause I'm in a holiday and obviously I didn't touch my drum
Incrível, amazing!!!
