I'm glad y'all liked it. In the book, the Suyin character's father had built a 3/4 mile long, 1/4 mile long lagoon connected to the ocean, to study whales. They kill the Meg, and capture its pup. The Meg book series does largely revolve around Angel, the pup, in (and out) of the Lagoon, which is used as a major theme park

It’s a shame the movie is mediocre. If it was an over-the-top, self aware B-movie, it would have been so much better. The books are just novelizations of B-movies. B-books, if you will. And they’re so enjoyable. Like James says, loosely based. The way they kill the Meg in this movie is alright, but in the book, he gets swallowed by the Meg in his submersible, gets out, and uses a Megalodon tooth to cut out the Meg’s heart

So random, but the dog in The Meg and the dog in Jaws have the same name, so obvious reference there.
Ruby Rose, the actor who plays Jaxx, is genderfluid, and if you watch the movie again, you'll notice that Jaxx is never referred to with gender-specific pronouns, so that's actually super cool.
Also, as a shark lover, this has got to be my favorite shark movie. Not because I think megalodon is still alive (just no), but because it addresses the issue of finning, and at the end, when it comes to it, it's the regular sharks that kill the Meg and save the day. 11,417 sharks are killed by humans every HOUR. That's 100 million every year. Sharks are becoming endangered, with thresher sharks being particularly effected because of their large caudal fin (a fin that long makes a lot of soup, I guess). All three known species of thresher shark have been classified as vulnerable to extinction since 2007, and yet they are still considered a prized game fish in the USA as well as many other countries. The negative rhetoric surrounding sharks as a species has prevented them from getting the protection they so desperately need, and we, human beings, are quickly killing them off. The man who wrote the book that Jaws is based on has publicly apologized for contributing to the rapid extinction of one the oldest and most beautiful animals on our planet.
It's fine to be afraid of sharks. I'm afraid of cows for goodness sake (although cows kill 20 people every year, and there were only five people killed by sharks in 2019). Plenty of people are afraid of wolves, but wolves still have protection under The Endangered Species Act. My point is, just because something scares us, doesn't mean we have the right to wipe it off the planet.

The dog's appearance and position also seem pretty similar. I wonder if that was used as a reference for this movie.

Mate as you have read all the books and good with the film answer me a question that's bugging me. In the very beginning we do see it's a Meg that attacks the sub just before it blows up. But that we discover that these sharks have been trapped below a cloud so what was the one that attacked the sub in the opening of the movie above the cloud how did it supposedly get there? Thanks

    • @lagoonsnaps6917
      @lagoonsnaps6917 4 роки тому +1

Matthew Nott * claps hands together * Ok see in the books the submarines actually go down into Challengers Deep and in later books, below a canyon under the Philippine Plate where there’s prehistoric creatures still living (the location and evolution biology are made up and utter bullshit but that’s too long to fit it). Jonas was already a veteran sub diver and when the accident happened, it was only with 2-3 other people who died, not a lot, and in a small submersible. The hydrogen sulfide thermocline ‘cloud’ in the movie actually confuses me on how it’s even a thing; it does exist, but not like THAT in the movie. The hydrogen sulfide makes it INCREDIBLY toxic for any life to swim above AND below it, and making that hole in it with a sub would of actually killed or severely injury anything as large as the Meg. In the book it just frankly doesn’t exist, it was just freezing temperatures of the thermocline that kept the Megs down there, and the reason why the big female escaped (she was heavily pregnant then) was bc Jonas and the son of the Japanese billionaire who hired him caught a smaller male Meg they tangle up and she follows him (as bonus she kills the son) while the ship was pulling them above. The male’s blood was warmer than the surrounding water and the female got a lot of energy from eating him too so she was able to make it to the surface. She’d only attack whales/annoying humans at night bc her eyesight was terrible during the day, which the film misses completely since it’s all during the day. Anyways if that cloud was an update way to explain how these creatures would stay where they are but then not mention how the Navy sub Jonas was a part of encountering the first Meg, I honestly don’t know. They should of just dropped the liquified hydrogen sulfide and make it freezing temperatures (and make the big female blind during the day) and that would have made it better(?)

I watched this movie 50 days in a row while in quarantine. I even had a Dead Meat inspired watch called “The Spill Count” (Day 7) where I counted every time a character fell into the water.
Seeing that you guys did this movie for the podcast literally made my day, and I’m so glad you got such a kick out of it!

When James mentions the idea of another billionare getting a hold of what the original cast found/ Chelsea mentioning the idea of a theme park around the Meg, I started to think of Statham appearing in court like Ian Malcolm did in Jurassic World trying to shut down the idea. 😂😂

Also like EVERY PODCAST I've listened to said that Jason's and Li's characters needed to BANG so much. The How Did This Get Made podcast did a great episode about it too.

I have a real love for shark movies. Even the really low budget bad ones. Sharks hold a very special place in my heart so seeing so many movies about them is so fun. Also sequel idea: their is a book called Hell's aquarium. Its about a giant aquarium that has a megalodon if I remember the plot correctly.

Hey James, if you wanna kill a Megalodon in Sea of Thieves, the best way is to just drop anchor and fight it, if you’re not doing that already. If you fight it while on the move, you risk passing close to an island or some other landmass, and if you do that it’ll automatically disengage and swim off.

  • @Indra2007

The thing about them blaming him is they didn't see the sub explode. They are in a sub and therefore surrounded by metal so didn't know that the sub blew up behind them.

    • @justinfernandez1156

They would have definitely felt and heard it being that close. A ship on the surface kilometers away felt when the Kursk had torpedoes explode inside it, so an entire sub from that close would be impossible to miss even if you couldn't see it

I'm 99% sure the dog being named Pippin is a Jaws reference, as right before Alex Kitner gets attacked, there is a guy playing fetch with his dog around the water, and it is implied to dog gets eaten since we see him repeatedly calling out for the dog, while the piece of wood the dog was fetching is floating in the water. The dog's name in that case was also Pippin.

The 3-D aspect really helped Avatar IMO get to that 2.6 billion mark. I don’t know if people went to watch it 2-3 times I sure didn’t to help inflate numbers. Endgame was great and deserving of the highest grossing film ever and should have won some visual effects awards with that brilliant team they had working on that film. Growing up loving and drawing marvel comics since the early 90’s. Seeing that depiction on screen is something I’d never thought I would see. Russo brothers did an amazing job.

The plot is barebones in the movie. Laurie not being a hated character, no terrifying night type boat kills, not enough into Jonas’s original mission, No Tj Tanaka,. The first 3 to 4 books had a lot of tension and danger to them. That being said I watch this movie almost nightly and can quote most of it.

I loved this movie. I read all the books by Alten (The Loch was awesome) and it was nice to see a movie based on his stuff. Biggest change from his books? All the characters are really likeable. Even Heller who was pretty dickish has a great face turn. "You're a good person Jaxx..." Awesome. There is so much from his books to work with. Hope to see more
