James I just wanna say, I can't speak for everyone, but in the last few years, I have gone from a passive listener to an obsessive physical media collector because of film criticisms on UA-cam (literally have an excel sheet I work on every day adding genres and notes, I have 400+ DVDs, almost all 80s horror) Work like yours and other podcasts inspired me and made me discover my passion, movies. People love what you love because you're passionate about it, so watch something old and make people love it 🥰
Amen to that! I’ve discovered so many cool movies (and books, and music) through people telling me about how much they love the things they love and why.
Fun fact! Cemetery Man actually got a 2nd life in movie stores like Blockbuster, Hollywood Video and Movie Gallery in the mid-2000s because of Rupert Everett's work in the Shrek sequels, Stardust, and The Chronicles of Narnia. My mom worked at Movie Gallery and I had rented Cemetery Man off the New Release wall because it was marketed as a new film, but the DVD was just a re-release. That cover of him standing alone in the graveyard with a shovel, the dark bluish-grey backdrop will live rent-free in my head forever! 🤓
In the mid 90s, there was a book called Baked Potatoes that basically rated movies on how enjoyable they were to watch while stoned. As a college kid in the mid to late 90s who got stoned often and loved movies, this thing was my Bible. Anyway, there was an entry on Dellamorte Dellamore in this book. They talk about how absurd and weird it is, and then give the best prank idea. In many pot smoking circles, there's always one dude that's just a total mooch. He never buys any of the pot, never rolls a joint or packs a bowl, never even springs for munchies. He's just there in the rotation. So what you do is throw on Cemetery Man next time he's in the group. At some point, the mooch will say "is anyone else as lost as I am?" And you and everyone else in the group replies with statemehts such as "no, I'm following it ok," "seems pretty straightforward to me," and "did you smoke too much?" Basically make him feel like he's the only one who is lost. Cruel, perhaps, but screw him for mooching off others.
from one movie-loving stoner to another, thank you for this info!!! gonna buy this for my bestie for her birthday and watch all of the suggestions together while ~elevated~
@@baileycunningham9197 You can probably find a copy online. It was published back in 95 or 96 so it's a bit dated. There's some great movies in there that I learned of thanks to this book, such as Dellamorte Dellamorte, Miller's Crossing, Altered States, Gates of Heaven, Koyanisqaatsi, and several others. Hopefully you'll be able to find a copy. There is a Letterboxed that has all the movies covered in the book.
right, Dead meat podcast episode 209 will be on the new channel, which the podcast episodes will be the main focus along with the rankings, Director's cut comparisons, They Talk, interviews with cast and crew of movies and tv shows, SUPERCUTS, new season of What's Your Favorite Scary Movie?, and a new season of Production Tales From Hell as well
Dellamorte would be an excellent Horror Survivor entry. He’s got insatiable bloodlust, he’s hot, constantly is looking for new women, and is a loner. Well, maybe he wouldn’t be a great contestant but he’d be funny 😭
Love this channel so much! 1:04:09 Windsorite here, we say Detroit like James and Chelsea. Never heard a soul say Detro-IT and only heard DEEtroit when crossing the border and rooting for teams like the Lions! Hoping to see you on the 14th and if not have a great time :)
I knew I recognized this film! There was always some random film playing in our living room when our Dad invested in cable for the first time. This was one of them! We just walked through the house and let it play, not really watching it, but I recall the Cemetery Man style, if that makes sense.
"Severin, Arrow, Shout, Vinegar Syndrome" - James shouting out some of the boutique labels us collector's are always keeping an eye out for. I would also add Umbrella from Austrailia, Turbine from Germany (thanks to them we have The Frighteners on 4K), and most of all Second Sight from the UK - those region free 4Ks? Dude!
The explanation James gave about a rewatch helping with weird timelines is definitely true. Pulp Fiction never feels as long as it did the first time I saw it.
@sharebear421 Many have, yes. Most of them were new releases at the time of the Podcast episode (Halloween 2018, Midsommar, Bodies Bodies Bodies, etc), but still.
I watched this last night on Shudder in preparation for this episode coming out today-I was thoroughly entertained and also very confused. I didn’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t that! Also Chelsea if you read this seeing that the LeatherFace I gave you at HorrorHound made it to the podcast set absolutely made my day!!! 💛💛💛
I loved this, the movie is one of my favourites and has a lot of Italian culture references in it that James and Chelsea couldn't catch. For example the old lady calling Francesco engineer it's not a Profondo Rosso reference but it's a kinda of common appelative (along with doctor) when talking someone that you're intimate with and has a higher grade of education. Another thing is the fact that Franco is an abbreviative of Francesco, which can kinda recontextualize the whole movie.
I’ve always thought this movie was great. The story is non-linear, yet poetic. It’s different and peculiar, but that’s what drew me to it. Thanks for covering!!
Watched this before the episode and my mind was blown even before the biker section. A great weird movie review before the split. Good way to sign off. Hopefully the second channel becomes a success as both James and Chelsea deserve it.
You guys should definitely give a chance on reading Dylan Dog. It's an amazing horror comic book series, with great scenarios and amazing gore, and beautiful drawings. Probably won't ever hear you talking about it, but that sneak peak I've got in this podcast made me happy cuz that is my favourite comic book series ever :D
Love that you guys featured this as it's one of my favorites. I do wish, though, that you had looked a little deeper into what it all means instead of mostly handwaving it as weird and nonsensical (though it definitely *is* weird). The ending, for example, shows Gnaghi and Francesco in a snowglobe, as it had earlier in the movie. The predominant theory is that the two of them are different personalities of Franco (the real protagonist, as this is his coma/dream world). So, the difference is that the positions of the two characters had switched from the first appearance, representing a shift in who is the dominant personality. This is why Gnaghi begins to speak, and Francesco devolves into Gnaghi's unintelligible speech pattern. There's so, so much more. You could honestly do an entire episode just discussing the possible meaning of it all.
27:45 on James confusing impotent vs infertile. Mix-ups happen. Recently, in my last semester of nursing school, I had to explain the difference between incontinent and anuria to a girl that wanted to become a cardiac/transplant nurse ( a kind of nursing where documenting incontinence/anuria correctly would be very important). incontinent: cannot properly control when they void or poop, many different types. anuria: does not produce urine, typically caused by kidney failure, generally requires dialysis to get rid of excess fluids.
i SO love you guys for covering this. i didn't discover this until about ten years ago, and was SO skeptical about it before getting into it, but HOLY TOLEDO... it was SO good, for what it is, and just in general. they LITERALLY do not make 'em like this anymore...!
I found this movie on the old Pluto app last week, took a chance and threw it on. Wow what a hidden gem 💎. Glad you guys found it as well. Keep up the awesome work!
I watched this movie when it first got put on Shudder and since then I've tried explaining it to like three different people and every time I end up just sounding like an absolute lunatic. 10/10 one of my new faves.
I made it 8 mins in and I had to pause to go watch the movie. The premise is too good to not watch this before watching the podcast. Excited to watch something new :)
I love that Chelsea has the patience for things like Skinamarink and House but once something drops the three act structure, it gets hard to cope. That is so weird and specific, but it being a manifestation of a more general issue with not feeling comfortable when you don't know what's going to happen next is actually kind of relatable.
I have not seen this movie, but I absolutely love your breakdowns and critiques of the horror genre and look forward to the podcast episodes! Makes me sad that there's only 40K views so far. I feel like if you haven't seen these types of certain movies by now, you might learn a thing or two and may lead you to want to watch it! There have been a few movies that I have waited to watch your review and watched the movie first, but I still do like listening to the podcasts and everything you guys offer, movie reviews, games, banter, etc. Can't wait to be subscribed to both of your channels!
I watched this film in preparation for the podcast as I'd never heard of it. It blows my mind that James watched this a bunch as a kid. It's so strange! Endearing strange for the most part, but very fucking strange.

Watching this movie before watching the podcast reminded me of watching "House" before I watched that podcast episode. Just a series of moments saying "What in the hell have they made me watch now?!?" I adore these deep cuts and learning about the era defining historical context that the movie contains which feels at complete odds with the actual content of the movie. My true "wtf" moment for this one was, "I'm watching a mentally slow individual make out with the decapitated head of a resurrected minor." Top shelf weird, can't wait for the next one.
I watched Cemetery Man recently because I’ve been seeing a lot of reviews for the Blu-Ray. Absolutely loved it! Side note: I LOVE DUNSTON CHECKS IN AND BEDTIME FOR BONZO!!!! They both were a HUGE part of my childhood
As a detroit suburban Michigander (Waterford/west Bloomfield) I say it the same as you guys cause it quicker 🤷♀️ I’ve never noticed a difference before 😂 I currently live downtown for school and still haven’t noticed that before so I have no clue 😂
Chelsea and I had the exact opposite experiences with the Three Stooges growing up 😂 My dad sat my sister and I in front of his Stooges VHSes EARLY to teach us "man funny, fall down"
Rupert Everett didn't make this because he respected Italian horror, he made this because they paid him a lot 😂 anyways, I hope you will cover more Italian horror movies in the future, there are definitely some gems worth a watch (and a kill count)
I think you're the right age for this--I was first exposed to Cemetery Man because they would air it late night every now and again on Showcase (the cable network that showed shows like Red Shoe Diaries and whatnot). My first viewing was when I was 11 or 12 and it came on HBO at like 1 o’clock in the morning. James I bet you had a similar experience because it was NOWHERE in blockbuster
PRODUCTION TALES FROM HELL IDEA: Slender-Man (2018) Although the film itself was a dumpster fire filled with absolute s***, the history of this film is mainly a mystery. From deleted scenes, unused designs and even an abandoned (good) script. I would like the idea of finding out the past of the movie and seeing: WHAT WENT WRONG?
i watched this high as a kite, 100% blind, after listening to the first 10 minutes of the episode, and wow was that an experience 🤣 honestly i loved it. but one thing i will say about the chaotic structure and happenings in the movie: like the girl returning over and over, never being caught, always being waved off as harmless, and especially the part where he's talking to the statue of death and death quite literally tells him "the dead are mine, why are you killing them? just kill LIVING people instead!" all made me think very much that the entire movie takes place in some kind of hell centered around the titular man. The Girl has some sexual hangups with him when she first appears, but her second iteration seems to perfectly look past all of those past issues and quite to the contrary love him FOR them seemingly. then, the third appearance she loves him unconditionally until it's torn away at the last second possible.
yo holy shit i was typing this as i wrapped up the episode, and when y'all mentioned the snowglobe again it just hammered home my thought about this being Francesco's hell. the snowglobe (in my mind) is that hell, and the framing device. it begins and ends with a look into the globe 🤯

James: I don’t know why I liked it so much as a kid
Also James: BOOBS
I grew up kinda gay and honestly boobs also weirdly drew me into some movies.
We all find boobs mesmerizing.

Hearing James and Chelsea referring to Pancho Villa as Don Quixote’s sidekick had me dead
I propose a toast to the final Podcast episode before the channel splits.
🍸
I forgot about that and I got so worried when i saw “final podcast episode”
right, Dead meat podcast episode 209 will be on the new channel, which the podcast episodes will be the main focus along with the rankings, Director's cut comparisons, They Talk, interviews with cast and crew of movies and tv shows, SUPERCUTS, new season of What's Your Favorite Scary Movie?, and a new season of Production Tales From Hell as well
Oh shit i somehow missed this news. Did they make up the new channel yet?
@@SurinaSlackArtNot until next week. James will keep us updated.
Ahh right. I’ll drink (koolaid) to that! 🫗🫗🫗

I hope Chelsea has taken note of this idea lol, super solid competitor.
I love older kill counts. They often introduce me to more obscure films I have not seen. I hope someday James gets to do Deep Red
chelsea saying “nya!” very cutely is perfection that I didn’t know I needed
Lol Don Quixote's sidekick is Sancho Panza, not Pancho Villa who was a early 20th century Mexican revolutionary.
Not just an early 20th century revolutionary. He was the main guy in the north.

This movie makes a great double feature with The Coen Brothers' Barton Fink, as both are about a man trapped in his own personal, existential hell.
Or Jacob's Ladder!
That could also describe Fight Club, Joker, American Beauty, Falling Down or pretty much any other movie about a guy having a psychotic episode.

One of the best surrealist horror films ever made. Michele Soavi, Rupert Everett and friends are genuine artists of the highest caliber.
I remember taping this off SBS in Australia in the late 90's and loving it.
I love classic films!! For what it's worth lol I would love to see Deep Red on the channel. Some people just don't appreciate those films:p

I've loved this movie since my late wife Sara showed me it in 1998. We even named our cat Nahgie because he couldn't meow fully.
Cemetary Man is great! A friend introduced me to it in high school and I've loved it ever since.

I ALSO thought that about impotent. Thanks Dead Meat Podcast for learning me some!
The painting mentioned at 24:35 is the third version of the "Isle of the Dead" ("Die Toteninsel" in German) by Swiss Symbolist painter Arnold Böcklin.
Gosh, one of my favs as an angsty middle school/high school student
First saw this on Chiller in the 00's and instantly fell in love with it and had to own a copy
I never expected yall to cover cemetery man, but BOY am I happy you are!!!
I gotta rewatch this one
It’s a rollercoaster ride
For some unknowing reason, I thought this was audio only like dndnd this is so good love the 3 of them
I love that Chelsea has the patience for things like Skinamarink and House but once something drops the three act structure, it gets hard to cope. I really wish I could go to the live show. I’m so glad you’re posting a video of it. 😊
I watched this film in preparation for the podcast as I'd never heard of it. It blows my mind that James watched this a bunch as a kid. It's so strange! Endearing strange for the most part, but very fucking strange.

Chelsea has some of the dreamiest sweaters
I LOVE this movie. So glad you are covering it
love hearing that chelsea was an AP art student same here it makes finding art references in film so fun
Not even halfway through and already so many good options for the next “out of context” podcast game

I wrote you guys an email years ago to cover this. I love this film lol
Ty u guys SO! much 4 covering this, u found another childhood fav of mine 🥰 great Job guys 👍
I love this movie, and the comic book based on this character Dylan Dog is my all time favourite comic.
love love love chelsea’s jumper this episode!!
I watched this flick for the first time this year since it was released on Shudder and loved it.

i had a great time watching cemetery man, had no idea what to expect and there were some nice surprises in tone
25:39 LOL as I'm sitting here playing a pokemon romhack and CURRENTLY teaching Will 'O Wisp to Chandelure
I watched this movie on repeat when I was about 13. Double feature of Dead Alive and Cemetery Man happened often.
I’m really pushing for a Giallo themed episode, diving deep into the sub genre.. hoping it happens soon 🙏

Serial Mom on Mother's Day would be amazing, that was one of my fave movies as a teen. Also, bonus Traci Lords side character! Also, I rented this move probably once a week in the late 90s, the cover was interesting and we thought it was fucking hilarious.
"This movie has the sauce" is my new favorite term!
Molly's scarf matching both of your outfits is the sweetest thing. ❤
I am a Russian from Russia, I have watched 95% of your podcasts. Thank you so much for your amazing work! Long live the podcast!
lived in Metro Detroit for about 20 years, and I've always heard it said like "duh-TROIT" like how you guys do.
maybe the "DEE-troit" pronunciation was popularized by Eminem, since that's how he says it in Welcome 2 Detroit?
One movie that id love to hear james and chelsea talk about on the podcast is Lake Michigan Monster
Thanks for the movie rec guys, looking forward to the Serial Mom kill count
I so really wanted to watch this one, but I don't have shudder 😢 But movies like this are my favorite!! I love the podcast
If you are stateside, you can usually snag a 7 day trial. I think the dead meat promo code for a trial still works too.
that "youre lying" from it being a snowglobe is perfect
I've been meaning to check this out because I've read some of the Dylan Dog comics, will put this higher on my watchlist now.
Dylan Dog comics are soooo dope. It's pretty sad it isn't popular in the US.
Hell yeah Dead Meat Podcast! My girlfriend and I just got Shudder and were thinking of watching this. Ended up watching Ghostwatch (1991) instead!
I love this movie so much
My first viewing was when I was 11 or 12 and it came on HBO at like 1 o’clock in the morning. James I bet you had a similar experience because it was NOWHERE in blockbuster
I bought a copy of this back when Blockbuster Video was closing. It was enjoyable, but it has been a long time since I've seen it.
First time I have watched a movie for the podcast and I do not regret it lol. This movie was so weird and so funny
PRODUCTION TALES FROM HELL IDEA:
Slender-Man (2018)
Although the film itself was a dumpster fire filled with absolute s***, the history of this film is mainly a mystery. From deleted scenes, unused designs and even an abandoned (good) script. I would like the idea of finding out the past of the movie and seeing:
WHAT WENT WRONG?
i watched this high as a kite, 100% blind, after listening to the first 10 minutes of the episode, and wow was that an experience 🤣 honestly i loved it. but one thing i will say about the chaotic structure and happenings in the movie: like the girl returning over and over, never being caught, always being waved off as harmless, and especially the part where he's talking to the statue of death and death quite literally tells him "the dead are mine, why are you killing them? just kill LIVING people instead!" all made me think very much that the entire movie takes place in some kind of hell centered around the titular man.
