do you live near by, im right off rt247:)
Hay bud I just watched a different video you did it was great..I just started my channel focused on knife making and some video editing. My challenge is the knife making process is long when you are a hobbiest with little tools. So I can make a long video and it takes forever to finish or show the process in steps along the way and even shorten it and make it interesting but again my post time is lengthened.. any way you can make a video on improving interest in to be continued style videos? Maybe you don’t have the ability to fit the whole setup goal roadblock outcome and reaction in each video? Thanks in advance!!
I think this is where a lot of new (myself included) video makers are having problems. A lot of us come up with ideas and have lots of video ideas but we don't do a good job of telling the story. It's either a rush and shoot then try to figure out how to tell a story or it's a piece mill of different stuff that is mashed together.
100%. Same here.
That's really what separates the good from the great! A lot of giga successful youtubers don't necessarily use the most advance editing techniques or equipment or have the craziest experience but they do know how to pull you with them into the story they are telling!
Same
@@yoramswiers I totally agree.
That is exactly what I’m struggling with. I can’t for the life of me tell a story. I get so overwhelmed.
When I used to do impromptu speeches, I'd use the same format. They'd give me the topic and then I would get 2-3 minutes to prepare. Rather than write the speech in my head, I'd think in this order, Conclusion I need to get to, Intro and 3 supporting topics or elements to then stand in front of an audience and try to create a speech that was, if I remember correctly 5 minutes long. It worked well. I struggle today to get back to that. It's been years and as I work towards creating a channel I find myself really wishing I kept that skill sharp. Thanks for the info!
I wish we were better at scripting but you might like my last video where we explored a mythical snake cave in the desert. It’s our latest video. I’m not sure how it would have been scripted but it’s a fun place to visit anyways. Like your alien rock.
Try to come up with a backstory to get the viewer into the story at the beginning and a takeaway that the audience can bring with them. Then the video can be about your experience while also trying to tie some history or something else into the experience. You want to make videos that are a complete story that anyone can watch and not need to know who you are.
As a proofreader, I would edit this presentation down. By 2:00, we're hearing you talk about you, but not so much about the topic of the presentation. That said, I was glad to watch you again after all this time, haven't seen your stuff in ages and I'm glad you're still hitting it!
Thanks u so much u are a genius 🙏🏽 I will make these kind of videos
Thank you for your insights. This storytelling format to vlogs is what I strive to do on my channel, but in a different kind of way than you described. I know my viewers want to see my day to day life, and strive to keep them entertained while showing the mundaneness that is life alone. My channel is growing and I think my concepts are helping to keep subscribers but am finding that sometimes the day to day topics don’t get impressions. What do you recommend for the data side of what a creator can enter into UA-cam to help the algorithm pull their channel in to the floodwaters of impressions. I mean beyond creating good content, and intriguing thumbnails. I am thinking more about, title, description and tags. Looking forward to learning from you.
I exactly do this, too. I make a list with all the topics I want to talk about in the video. My next one is showing this even more.
I am looking forward to making a sports channel since all sports video like volleyball is getting a hit.
Was there more to the video today? Ending?
Thanks for the insight, yes very helpful. It sure seems like a lot of work. Does the process get faster and easier to go through with practice ?
I just posted my second video ever! I think I made a story LMAO!
Storytelling is my biggest struggle right now
Thanks , like it will use some of it
this is exactly the conteny i want to see more of. Every channel now has reviews on the same gear, how to fly a drone etc. i find very little on how to develop a story nd see how it was actually fimed
I have more of these kind of videos in the works
@@JevenDovey fantastic, living not too far from you, you also give me places to explore in my backyard
Excellent Video and Excellent Advice. Thank You Jeven.
Nice one! Thanks for sharing your process! 👍
Thanku
Hi Mate, this is first time I watched your film's. Excellent job and a lot of knowledge. Thank's. I like your baseball cap with the mountain view. What's the brand?
Made it myself.
Keep rocking dude as always ❤️💪
Very help full Video thank you very much
Thumbs up for this! 👍 Thanks!
Super interesting video. You can recommend books that deal with this topic. Thanks and congratulations again.
You are always the best ❣️
I am so proud this guys that always had a good punch when at the time telling the story while rolling the breathtaking footage. Whhhhat a nice craft!?
Yep. Story is everything.
Great video….. do you read off a teleprompter? Just wondering if this is something I should implement.
No i don't but some people find it super helpful
Thanks!
Awesome video.
👍🏻👍🏻
Nice camera small UA-camr here ❤️
For a sec i thought you are Ben Affleck 😅
Excellent insights Jeven.. power-packed as always!
This is awesome!! Just what I needed - and this video is so well produced. Looks great!!
🤝😎🤟🏼
Love your videos on this. been at this YT thing for 3 years consistently (been making vids since 2007) but I realized my videos were long and boring. I live in one of the coolest places in the world, Kodiak, Alaska and I know theres a career in it for me I just have to get better at making 5-8 minute videos instead of 12-20 min ones. Occasionally on a really epic day or trip I like 20 min vlogs that are action packed. Debating on making a 2nd channel of just my adventures and keeping this one more technical and behind the scenes.
Length doesn't matter if its a good story. Work on your story first and only make it as long as you need to tell that story.
That rock video was fantastic. I really appreciate the insights in this video, Jeven.
This is perfect man as I was just thinking I need to start scripting my videos because I feel like they are going nowhere. Thanks for this one!
Scripting helps a ton!
Great video, when will you be making the video about how you pull old footage from Final Cut with a library dedicated for storing just the videos, very interested on that topic and I’ve read other people commenting the same.
Your advice is a gold mine… thanks!!
I have been trying to learn how to script videos and tell a story and learn my edit style. Even though I don't vlog this might be incredibly helpful for me anyway
Yes Theory, Veritasium are the pioneers of this kind of Niche.
Very cool. This is almost exactly what I did in my last video (Fossil Hunting, Peace River) except I had bullet points for B-roll and came up with the voiceover script after (slightly more difficult but it did the job)
Thank you for the awesome content, it has really helped me out alot.
Love this type of content, Jeven. We say the Rock & UFO video and it was sooo interesting! Question : do you do scouting to check if the places are ideal for a video? As a travel vlogger, we plan our trips, but sometimes it's hard to know if it will make a good video. Thanks!
That’s a good point. We tried to make a video last week that the place wasn’t even accessible anymore.
@@WayIntoAdventures That would have made a good video. You getting ready to go, the place not accessible, why it wasn't accessible, How it made you feel or some consequence. How you find out what to do to prevent that in the future.
@@Squisheyy that's a really good point. Make not being able to get there part of the story. That's such a good idea!
I did not scout the location. I just researched it and watched other videos to get an idea. @squishey yes! Great to mold the story to the situation. Not everything will work out as planned. You need to be ready to change things on the fly and make it work with what you can film once you get there
Would love to learn more about how to create stories out of past footage. I was always great shooting early on, but not great at intentionally shooting (to tell a story). Any tips? Great video as always!
Great resource for vloggers.
Thanks for your sharing and tips. I’m trying to start my food (chocolate and baking) channel and has been struggling with so many “how to”. So many things to learn about starting a new channel. Have been following your channel for guidance. Now trying to get my first video going, after creating my channel. Thanks for being here for us.
Loved it. Thanks for sharing your process!!
jeven with the sauce, always real and relatable.
Why the sudden ending, Jeven…? Did something go wrong?
Or just a recent trend just suddenly end the video and aiming 100% retention. Seen this a lot lately because all YT educators advise this. But he did it very abruptly, definitely leaving the feeling something went wrong.
Testing out different ways to end videos rather than having a big wrap up
@@JevenDovey Ah, fair enough. Just seemed abrupt, that’s all. 👍
@@madfinntech Ah, clever. But yeah, this seemed too sudden. Not even a goodbye. 😄
Thanks for your videos Jeven, i am trying too build a channel around motorcycles and biking, exploring cities and places of interest, i love the way you create your videos, i don't seem to get how to make nice videos and edit them to look good. do you have any tips off that? thanks.
This video is so underrated!
Awesome
A lot of vlogging tips here.. title misleading .. shoulda include “vlog” something
Very good! that's exactly the kind of information I was searching for! Thanks for sharing you knowledge.
please how can you tell a story on a tutorial style video?
Awesome video
this is so educative love your way of explaining it...thank you
i am trying to learn to narrate my hiking films! ty brother
This is super helpful. Improving my storytelling and scripting are my current focus areas. The companion video to this is excellent, too.
created my youtube channel off of watching your videos a little over a year ago, my channel has grown based on your tips and advice... i have watched this video and your other story telling videos a 10000 times, i even got myself a tent on top of my car... ( pretty cool by the way).. still practicing my Vlogumentary, not easy but i am sure to get there.. hopefully i will make you proud as your number 1 student from the UK!!!
You're the best bro amazing content ❤
Nice 2 camera setup, but you’re looking into the other camera before the next cut sometimes. Just a small tip for you that you might not realise while doing it coz it’s just such a small detail. Still thought it might help you.
I'm using 1 camera and cropping in and out in the edit....
@@JevenDoveyWow. I thought that at first but it looked like it was a bit to the other side. Anyway great content. Been watching your vids for a long time now.
Amazing! Thanks for teaching me this
I really dropped the ball on the story telling. I’m going to be homeless soon so I think I have an idea how to approach it with a more story and inspiring approach than just snippets of the day
Amazing tips. I will use this to my channel. Thanks for this wonderful video
That's a nice rock!
This is why I would never get into vlogging. Trying to script what you might see out and about ruins the instant feeling of it. Always expect the unexpected and more magic will happen :)
I really love how break Down every teaching with simple modes for anyone to understand! Thank you
Learnt so much
I’d really love to vlog and tell beautiful stories that are educating soon ❤
How dose a person start there first utube channel?
@@LisaYoungren make videos and post them on UA-cam 👍
I learned a lot from this video. I’m glad it was short sweet and to the point. I feel a bit more confident on structure.
Amazingwork
❤❤❤
Great value here, thanks Jeven.
Thank you for this video! Definitely got some helpful advice I can apply to my videomaking process.
Helpful video!
Glad it was helpful!
