“Plans are nothing. Planning is everything” ~ Eisenhower. Love seeing how you lay everything out systematically. Not only does it create a more cohesive story, but it allows you to roll with the punches on location. Good stuff

This actually helps a ton. I’ve always wanted to make a travel video but had no clue where to start because of how non traditional this style of film is. I’m making films with friends and know how to storyboard, but travel films are a whole different thing.

Watching this video for a 2nd time after a year, and it hits so different. Too many times I’ve gone into shoots not having plans at all, and paying the price for it when I’m sitting in front of my screen at 4am with my eyeballs shriveling into raisins.
Now that I’ve gone and learned the hard way, I really took this advice from a different perspective, and I really appreciate how in depth you laid out your ideas. Cheers Aidin. Know that the effort you put into each video pays off for years to come.

I always get my ideas at like 2am, so I wake up to write them down, and then I stay up till like 4am just writing, it's a bad habit

This isn't a bad habit! There were many famous, amazing creatives/inventors who would wake up around the time and start their day off at 2-3am!
Your building a six sense on capturing your ideas. Next thing you know you will start putting those ideas into action and you'll manifest those ideas into reality.
I would have the most insightful or even taboo dreams and I would quickly sketch out a specific scene that caught my most attention in my dream. As soon as I was done I would forget my dream just like how ideas come and go. I would then think about how and where would I create this scene from my dream. Most times I wouldn't do anything however, I would mentally add more to that specific scene when it's relevant from doing day to day tasks.
Now I am able to think of scenes/compositions quickly when it comes to doing Weddings, Family events, Live music Performances on the spot. I thank the habit I created from horribly sketching out what I could remember from those dreams.
So in short, keep waking up late at night. As long as your aware of your own health through the years that pass, you'll be okay!

there are people who need plan - because this is how they work and people who are able spontaneously take amazing shots. Both methods work - discover what persona You are. Same with traveling. 1 group need to know where, how, how long with written plan, other can easily adjust to situation and get best from it. So .... don't be frustrated if you hate planning as me. I feel so comfy just feeling the moment and finding the spot in run. Of course as long this is not your business. THan plan is key - or at least draft.

Great video, this is exactly what I was looking for and there’s so few videos about the planning process!
I specifically liked how the shot list works as both the sequence in the video and the production order that makes sense logistically.
I also liked the part about only feeing like you need to storyboard either a specific sequence or something you’re not sure about.
Both those areas I either go overboard or don’t do enough, so those tips are helpful for finding the right balance.
Since I shoot videos at home I also do “location scouting” around the house with my phone to help plan as well.
A lot of these I’ve done too but not in this order and that’s super helpful too 👍

    _Such_ a great video!
Beautifully shot, clearly organized, and logically laid out.
As so many other commenters have noted, the quality of preparation is so integral to success. It reminds me a bit of writing a novel - there are _plotsers_ (who meticulously organize everything before writing the first line of the story) and the _pantsers_ (who essentially just wing it, write in a fury, and then go back and organize into something coherent). Each has its strengths and weaknesses.
    I'm a Plotser.
Loved the video. Found some great new ideas to try.
    Cheers, mate!

When travelling, how do you balance shooting and being at the moment at the same time? I would like to know any advises about it. Because these are the things I find it hard to balance. Sometimes, I wanna be at the moment and not touch a single gadget but in the end regret I didn't take enough footages. 😁

Interesting approach, thank you. It would actually be super interesting to see how that approach changes when you make an actual travel video. as in the main purpose of the trip is to travel and see things and make a video about things you come across naturally, rather than the purpose of the trip is to shoot a video and therefore the itinerary has been chosen specifically for the purpose of making a video. may an idea for a future video, thx mate.

The funny thing is that I literally went on YT just now in order to ask this specific question I wanted to ask my favorite filmmakers (and you’re one of them):
I have this question that is really bugging me for a while and also contributed to my lack of inspiration and excitement about filming and editing. I was wondering how you plan cinematic travel vlogs when the circumstances are so very different than when you plan a specific shot for, let’s say, an ad for a client. When it comes to the latter, you know what you got, you know the utensils, the scenes, the angles - overall you have all that it takes to write a rough script of what you envision. But when it comes to travelling, it’s more of like a spontaneous thing where you literally explore new lands and I mean, it is on thing to capture still scenes and connect them to other still scenes in post, but how do you get to plan certain transitions when you have no idea what kind of shot you will connect them to? I hope you understand what I mean, but it’s just that I see all of these puzzle pieces in a travel vlog for example and I realize that you had to shape specific puzzle pieces a specific way so they would connect to other pieces, i.e. you had to end certain scenes a specific way while shooting in order to connect them to other scenes in post so it ends up being a smooth transition. I feel like this can’t be a question of post, but you had to do the precautions while filming already. So I am reaaaallly really wondering how you do it, how you, pretty much, spontaneously plan transitions that you don’t know about yet ? The only explanation I have is that you capture the same shot in different angles and specifically with different endings (e.g. pan up or down or to the side) as a precaution (which ngl would be 10 times the work lol) or that once you reach a specific location you work with what you have there, create a rough script in your mind, so you can connect the puzzle pieces of this specific location at least.
