I grew up watching the skins in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. This was a really fun and interesting game to sit back and re-watch. As many commenters have said, there were a number of subplots in this game, the biggest of course was that Gibbs hadn't beaten the Giants since 87. You can see from the opening minute how nervous Gibbs looked standing on the sideline. He looked very tense, as well he should be. He knew the importance of this game. If he couldn't get that monkey off his back, it would affect the psychology of the whole team. He NEEDED this win. As usual, Gibbs made the adjustments he needed to make at halftime. Earnest Byner was not his usual self in this game, so Gibbs went with the fast young rookie in the second half and it paid off big time. Also, they adjusted the blocking schemes and attacked the Giants right up the middle with trap blocking and straight up drive blocking. The Hogs did their job! And Ricky Ervins looked faster than every player on the field. Man, he was five yards downfield in a blur! Those long, clock-eating second half drives were a thing of beauty. Vintage Skins/Gibbs football! A low-scoring game and mostly a defensive battle, but very fun to watch for football fans in general and old Skins fans in particular. And lastly, LT wasn't much of a factor in this game. I think it was combination of Gibbs moving the pocket, double teaming him when necessary and LT struggling a bit with an injury.
Great Redskins team. Just a machine. In the conversation for one of the Greatest teams of all time.
I don't know about that, green bay 60's. Steelers 70's , 49r's 80's, Dallas 90's, NE 2000's. then there's the Dark horse Raiders of 76, 80 and 83.But then thers the 85 Bears and teams prior to the 60's Bears, Card, Gaints. This isn't even probably the best Redskins team. I like the 1988 team that killed the Denver team.

@@ralstonmathews3543 I think a lot of people was surprised in that superbowl, considering that they had a shotout earlier that year and the Skins won. That Raiders D was amazing in that game, alot of Raiders HAll of Famers/probowlers was on that squad (defensively).

The '91 Redskins squad, as truly great at it was, had an inexcusable home loss to the Cowpies. The '87 Skins were the only one to sweep the Cowboys AND win the Super Bowl, ergo they're greater than the '91 team in my book. JMHO, of course.
Mark Rypien had a lethal deep ball. He was inconsistent AF, but my goodness, he had an all time deep ball.
Had a 400 yard game and a 4000 yard season in 1989 back when both of those feats were harder to pull off

OMG. I was at this game with my dad and brother. One of only 3 NFL games I ever went to. I can't believe I found this. Thank You! I came across this game looking for a different one. I went a year before when the Giants beat the Redskins on their way to their Super Bowl XXV victory over Buffalo. So here I was back again. I was a hard-core Redskins fan living in Connecticut. We all knew Washington absolutely had to win this game. They could never beat the Giants up until this point for like the last 4 years. I just turned 18. I remember Gary Clark dropping a perfectly thrown ball by Rypien. The whole stadium went silent when he put that ball up. I kid you not. Because this was all Washington did was pound, pound and pound that ball and go for the bomb. Clark drops the ball right in front of us for what would have been a sure touchdown. You could here a collective audible gasp of relief in the stadium. Me? I was completely deflated. I wanted to go home at halftime. I couldn't take it anymore. I think Washington was losing 13-0. Not for nothing, but the Giants had a good team that year also. They had maybe 1 or 2 loses and I believe Washington was 7-0. My dad convinced me to stay and Washington ended up coming back and winning 17-13 I think? I was speechless and stunned. I just couldn't believe it. I remember leaving the game and Giant's fans were angry as HELL to say the least. I had all my Redskins gear on and people were calling me names and trying to start fights with me. I wouldn't of had it any other way. The rest as they say was history that year for Washington. Thanks again. This brings back alot of memories. Back when football was football and you didn't win the NFC EAST without being battle tested.
1:08:22 why Art Monk was great. Knowing that there were more guys coming than there were blockers to pick them up. Art Monk chipped Pepper Johnson before going out on his route giving Rypien just enough time to complete a 15 yard pass to Ricky Sanders. Little things like that are why Art Monk is underrated even with a HOF induction. Gotta Credit Gibbs for having formations that gave Monk the option to help a little
Monk was sensational. Second only to Jerry Rice during his era. And before rice came into the league the was the best all-around receiver bar none. I’ve never respected Peter King since he argued that didn’t belong in the Hall of Fame. Only a complete ignoramus could try and make that argument.
I was watching this game at my friend's house when I was a kid because we didn't have cable. I left to go home and figured the Redskins lost but woke up and was shocked when I checked the newspaper! HTTR
I was at college and my roommate was an eagles fan he was being smart when we were losing but when we came back and won man was he quiet to this day i still mess with him bout that one

The Giants lost a lot of their intimidation when Parcells retired the first time. The Redskins hadn't beaten the Giants since 1987 and it looked like the Redskins were dead in the water. Then the running game got back on track and Gary Clark caught 2 big touchdowns. The Giants were the previous Super Bowl champions the year before and once Washington beat the Giants and got over that hump, it was smooth sailing when it came to the division that year even though the Eagles were 10-6 and still missed out of the playoffs.
Without the Bill's this was just an average football team. Imagine losing Parcells and Belichick in the same season after winning the SB the previous season. Says a lot about how great the coaches were, considering the same team of players all returned for the 91 season.
Thank you so much the 1991 Redskins are one of the most underrated football teams of all time. I remember this team. They were the best team in the 90's bar none. I was a Rams fan for the record so not a bias position here.
Greatest team of all time in my opinion. No flaws and won in such easy and dominant fashion throughout the reg and post season.

I don't think they are underrated. In fact many sports experts rate the 1991 Redskins the best Super Bowl winning team in history. They are, as of 2021 the only Super Bowl winner where their opponents had a collective winning record.
Plenty of sports pages and rating channels have the 91 skins as the greatest team in the superbowl era. Their point differential is the best or one of the best EVER!!!
@@shifty1927 True I was referring to the common football analyst. They rarely bring up that team. We hear about the 92 Cowboys, or the 89 49ers, or the 85 Bears heck even the 2000 Ravens. That was my only point.

the Redskin coaching staff was brilliant at halftime adjustments.
I'll tell you what....had lost this game...we probably don't win it all. The Giants were a HUGE thorn in our butts the last 3 years prior and finally beating them was a TREMENDOUS confidence booster.
Huge Thorn in our side from 1984 until Gibbs retired. During that time period they were a tougher fight than the Dallas games.
I think it was important that this game played out exactly the same way the prior 6 meetings from 88-90 went. All those games were just like this one, with the Giants winning all 6. For the Redskins to finally flip the script and win at the Meadowlands for the first time in a non-strike game since 1983 was the keystone game of the season for them.

@@wokejoke2675 True! But Gibbs finally got his revenge against Parcels on a national stage in the Monday Night miracle when he coached Dallas. (The classic Jay Schreoder game where Theisman's leg broke off basically is the only other one.).
PS--Norv Turner beat the Super Bowl bound Parcells coached Patriot's in Foxboro in 1996 too!
What I remember most about this night was the fact that I couldn't watch! I was a Freshman in College... our dorm didn't have ESPN. Being from South Virginia... my favorite football team was the Redskins and since Richmond has the Atlanta AAA baseball affiliate, I also grew up a Braves fan. That night, the undefeated Redskins kept it going... and the Braves got SCREWED when a base runner was pulled off the base by Hrbeck(?)... "tagged" and called out.
Bobby Wilson made the biggest play of this game with that stop of Rodney Hampton on 3rd and 1 to force that punt i wanna 👀 the 1987 game at RFK where Jay Schroeder brought us back to win

My dad was at this game. After the Skins trailed the Giants 13-0 at halftime, he made a bet with a Giants fan that they would come back & win. Guess who won that bet?

This game kept you on the edge of your seat the whole game, but in hindsight this is one of those games you
remember the most as a fan.
This was such an amazing season for the Skins, Rypien was 9td 6int coming in to this game and he finished the season 28td 11int, and looking back at it, this was the game that really got him going. Gibbs was known for being a fairly conservative play caller who liked running the ball in his counter trey system but he saw that Rypien's best asset was his deep ball and he and Clark had a great chemistry together. Combine that with elite offensive and defensive lines and a few studs at linebacker and DB with a solid stable of running backs they were really untouchable in this season. Everything just seem to come together at the right time and I think the Sprint Bomb play in this game is what got it all going for them
This game was a microcosm of the whole 91 season for my giants. Sad

@@w41duvernay agree, the theme of this game was 1st half struggles 2nd half comeback. The season in the other hand, fast out the gate,3home shutouts, a hiccup vs Dallas, ball control and domination in the playoffs and SB Champs. if any game summed us up it was probably the SB or the championship game.
The first half was a whooping by the Giants, second half a whooping by the Skins, Washington whooped just a little harder
The microcosm of the Giants season. It was a solid first half, but they couldn't put it away, and fell apart in the second half.
I was 10 when this game happened and missing it but my dad told me the next morning about the comeback. Now I get the Clark drops. Rypien was all over the place accuracy wise. Behind guys, overthrowing guys I think Clark was just surprised when one of his balls was actually where it was supposed to be. You can understand the frustration he had with Rypien which could have contributed to him leaving 2 years later. I mean Rice didn't have to deal with such inaccuracy with Montana and Young and I know Clark wanted to be in the conversation with the great WR's during that time and should have been but so many times he'd be open and Rypien would just flat out miss him or airmail him. Imagine if Rypien hit 1/2 the passes he missed to Clark..
Rypien threw the most wobbly outs and such, but he threw the most beautiful and accurate deep ball. That was his one great talent...which worked well for Gibbs. After Theismann, he always had strong-armed but erratic QBs. Schroeder, Williams, Rypien, Campbell...

I always thought the Redskins should have used Brian Mitchell more in the offense. He was so versatile, a big weapon running or receiving and was a former qb. He should have been getting those hb pass plays Byner was getting.
Whole was definitely greater than the sum...they were solid in all phases: Offense( especially in the trenches) Defense ( vastly underrated) Special Teams, and ladt but not least, coaching.
The Giants didn't act like sour sports walk off the field before the game was over unlike the 91 pistons who did that

Ricky Ervins speed won this game for us to me him and Wilbur Marshall were the MVPs of that team that year
Ervins looked like a really good rb but he only played a few seasons and dissappeared.

Ray Handley. This nucleus lost its heart when Parcells and Belichick left. Lost a lot of close games they should've won, including this one.
In 1979 the Steelers went 12-4 while winning the super bowl. In 1980 they went 9-7 and missed the playoffs.
The 1981 49ers went 13-3 while winning the super bowl. In 1982 they went 3-6 and missed the playoffs.
In 1987 the Redskins went 11-4 while winning the super bowl. In 1988 they went 7-9 and missed the playoffs.
The 1998 Broncos went 14-2 while winning the super bowl. In 1999 they went 6-10 and missed the playoffs.

happened in 1987 too. after they won the Super Bowl in 1986. Very complex game and the difference between a Champion and a losing team can be a simple injury or opposing teams learning out to stop a play or 2 they couldn't stop a year before.

That first half was the last time the giants played with any confidence at all that season. Weren't the same for two years after losing this game the way they did.
