Redskin Captain All Pro linebacker Chris Hanburger called a fantastic game. Hanburger called every defense from the huddle, no ear piece in his helmet, no coach in the press box telling him what to call, he did this all on his own, down and distance, identifying Cowboys player personnel packages, adjusting his calls based on Redskins nickel and dime personnel ,he knew everyone’s assignment on the defense, and had over 250 audibles memorized . You can see how many times he calls an audible and the defense shifts into the perfect defense for the cowboys offensive play. His pre snap play recognition was legendary and his audibles and adjustments made everyone on the defense better players.
It was the final year of his great HOF career as he retired after the season and as Don Meredith commented, he clearly had lost a step after 13 seasons , but still had a pretty solid year playing a few months after knee surgery. ( 4 sacks , 5 delivery sacks, 2 batted balls , 2 forced fumbles )The Cowboys lined up DuPree on Hanburger most of the game , Landry knew very well you had to account for him or he would beat you with a big play, which he did so many times during his Hall of Fame career.
IMO, the biggest play of the game was at 2:04:38 -48 , fourth quarter , game clock 2:32 ,Cowboys last possession when Staubach rolls left and Hanburger vacates his zone coverage and blitzes blasting him in the head coming over the top hitting his arm and causing a weak wobbly pass . They flag him for unnecessary roughness and Staubach wasn’t the same after that hit. Staubach gets right up and he’s wobbly as he walks and it takes a few seconds before he realizes his helmet is crooked , which Hanburger almost ripped off . He also turns around to see who blasted him , lol.
Hanburger’s nickname was the “General” for his no nonsense , take charge military style of leadership he demonstrated , as he’s heading back to the defensive huddle he’s already thinking about his defensive alignment and he’s letting Kenny Houston know what he wants the secondary in for the next play and you see Houston letting Chris know he heard him. 2:05:13-14
Coach Landry realized Hanburgers delivery sack left Staubach disorientated because The Cowboys run the ball on the next two plays , after the two minute warning and a timeout. Staubach attempts one more pass, then takes a delay of game and his last pass attempt is way overthrown. Totally uncharacteristic of Roger in the fourth quarter of any game he played.
Hanburgers “knockdown “ of Staubach , as they call it today , aka “ delivery sack” was the term George Allen used for it, was the biggest play of the game. Too bad MNF didn’t keep that camera shot rolling to show how ferocious the hit was, Gifford and Don stayed with the throw but they could see Staubach got blasted , which they tell us. The newspapers writers ,mostly from Dallas talked about it and wrote that after Hanburgers hit on Roger he wasn’t the same.
Chris Hanburger , HOF 2011, was either an All Pro, All NFC, All NFL, or a Pro Bowler in 12 of his 14 seasons in the NFL.
He was the 1972 NFC Defensive player of the year. He was selected to the Pro Bowl TEN times, but is only credited with NINE, as he could not play in the 1977 game due to his knee injury . In the era he played the coach’s and players voted for the Pro Bowl Team.
Class act, great player, served his country in the US Army and humble. He wanted no accolades or any fanfare. They don’t make players like this anymore.

Now I'm going to tell you what you didn't know about this game. The Redskins noticed while watching film that when the Cowboys had the ball, running back Robert Newhouse would let his mouthpiece hang out on plays when the Cowboys were going to pass and would stick it in his mouth on running plays when he knew he was going to have to block for Tony Dorsett. The result was the Cowboy offense sputtered in this 9-5 loss. The two teams played again on Thanksgiving Day, only this time, the Cowboys knew about the Newhouse situation. So Dallas turned the tables. On running plays Newhouse let his mouthpiece dangle from his facemask, and stuck it in his mouth on passing plays. The Redskins took the bait. The Cowboys cruised to a 20-0 halftime lead and eventually built the lead to 37-3 in a 37-10 win. The things teams find when they study film is amazing.

Having attended many Redskins games at RFK, the audio, which has an nice analog quality to it, really captures the ebbs and flows of the crowd and generally the ambience of the stadium. Remember this game like yesterday. My aunt was in a MNF office pool where you purchase blocks and had the Redskins score ending in 9 and the Cowboys ending with a 5. She knew nothing about football and asked what the odds were of her winning. When told they were not good due to scores rarely ending in 9 and 5, she went to bed. Of course the Redskins were leading 9-3, with the ball, running out the clock. They took a delay of game with three seconds left, then Theisman runs into the end zone for a safety. We stormed my aunt's bedroom and woke her up to tell her she won 25 bucks! What a country. 🙂

Unfortunately that great goal line stand took place at the opposite end of the field. The fans at RFK were crazy loud and raucous in those days. My dad won the 1978 season tickets in an office pool, Arlington County Highway Planning, and he kept this game and one later in the season against the Miami Dolphins. He picked me up after school/workday, we had pizza at a favorite spot in Arlington, then took the incomplete freeway into the parking lots at RFK. This was an amazing experience. I was 13 years old. Roy Jefferson was seated just a few rows behind us. We were in the home plate corner of the end zone where the safety occurred to end the game. I thought C. Waters was gonna force a fumble. When dad was in his 80’s, I took him to a Nats game at RFK. We sat in the same corner, just a section higher in the stands. I hated when JKC built in Landover, and am now a Packers fan, since the Redskins are no more. Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed reliving it in 2023.

The Cowboys won Super Bowl XII and was the powerhouse in the NFC. I thought for sure Roger would do his last minute heroics, but it wasn't to be. I'm so excited I had to post again. This was just an absolutely AMAZING game, despite the fact that NO TDs were scored and it ended up 9-5. One of the most brutal, emotional and just INTENSE games every played between two NLF teams, at a time when the Redskins/Cowboys rivalry was just EPIC. Unfortunately, Pardee's teams always seemed to fall apart in the home stretch. This year was the beginning of that for the Redskins.
It's pretty hard to start a season 6-0 and NOT make the playoffs, but that's exactly what this team did. They looked amazing the first half of the season, and then just utterly fell apart the second half, missing the playoffs at 8-8. The next year, they are up on Dallas by 13 with just under four minutes to play in a "winner take all" game, and they blow that lead with just some terrible playcalling and a crucial fumble, miss the playoffs. If you recall, Pardee was also the coach of the Oilers when they were up 38-3 on the Bills in the playoffs and ended up LOSING that game. Ugh. At least the '79 loss led to Gibbs, so it all worked out in the end.
But this, man ... this is just ... incredible. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this available when you didn't have to. I've got tears in my eyes right now, thinking of how much this particular game meant to me at the time. My Dad let me stay up and watch the whole thing, a rarity, and when Theismann ran into the end zone to take the safety, it was just ... bliss. Thank you.

This Redskin team was not deep and many of the starters, though excellent, were near the end of their careers. I attribute the late season collapse mostly to age. They just couldn't keep it up the intensity for 16 games.
