- India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is widely considered the frontrunner as the country embarks on a mammoth, multi-phase election on Friday (Apr 19). Dr Pradeep Taneja, senior lecturer in Asian politics, political economy and international relations at the University of Melbourne, tells CNA's Asia First what the prospects are of Mr Modi winning a rare third term and hitting the target he has set for his Bharatiya Janata Party.

Why do these national and international journalists always rebuff northern Indian states and always avoid comparison between financial heavy weights like Maharashtra and Gujrat and southern states?
To answer clearly, PM Modiji's NDA will perform their best in this election. Minorities in North India unanimously electing BJP and it's allies. In south India, Tamil Nadu and Telangana will prove better for Modiji. Karnataka and Pondicherry will also be with BJP. Overall people of India are with BJP and Modiji.

Why is Tamil Nadu considered the representatives of the "South" ? They are neither the largest nor the most popular language in South. Majority of people in South speak Telugu - not Tamil. Even GDP wise, Bengaluru has greater GDP than Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu.
Who says so? The term South India is always mentioned when other states like Ka/Ap/Kl are in the news as well. But then i believe TN has highest no of seats in the Lok Sabha from the south and TN are the second highest source of tax revenue in India. So it is of some significance in this election. Also the TN leader of BJP is increasingly considered to be a future PM of India....& its widely believed BJP could bag a few there seats this time.

So despite Karnataka producing more taxes, Telugu states sending more MPs and Tamil not even the most spoken language in South India where is this Tamil centric South Indian politics coming from? It seems the majority Telugus and Kannadigas are content to let Tamils take center stage in this mythical north-south divide.
Finally historically it is Tamil domination in the South that led to linguistic state formation demands primarily by Potti Sriramulu from Andhra and this was what led to the creation of modern day Tamil Nadu from erstwhile Madras state.

All anyone talks abt when it comes to the South is Blore & Kerala for its tourism. TN/AP/TEL barely feature unless it comes to elections such as these. It makes sense for a national party to focus on 1 state with 39 seats as opposed to 2 states with 42 seats. All southern states retains a strong sense of regional identity.
And we know Telegu is the most spoken language in SI, i mean the family heading the DMK party in TN are Telegus themselves, many MPS & MLA in TN, & half of Tamil flim industry are Telegu too. Little free advice for CNA: if you want to understand indian politics, you need to understand in national elections, the parties have never counted on the south for their votes, those are won by regional parties. But that's considered a 'given' and enough votes are won from everywhere else. So asking about not winning the south as if that's a hurdle for BJP to winning the election shows poor understanding of indian politics and political strategy.
CNA needs to learn more about India instead of reading useless theories of the past from left liberal "intellectuals". Each and every individual has right to vote and it is a public holiday to allow them to vote. In US if they declare holiday, people will combine with long week end and go out for vacation. Close to 70% of the people voted in first phase and it will be held in 7 phases. Billion people voting and managing the resources is not an easy task. Modi will win because the opposition has divided among themselves, and it does not mean Modi is a dictator.
