- I bought a DJI Avata 3 weeks ago. I used it for a while without any issues.
2 weeks ago I decided to do a range test but due to windy conditions, the battery drained so fast I wasn't able to return it home!

When returning home, on the verge of a critical battery discharge, in great anxiety, you did not notice that the coast on the right is much closer than the home point - it was enough for you to turn slightly towards the coast, and then return along it to the home point, without even having a chance fly, you could land it on a hard surface and pick it up later.. Be careful on future flights and plan missions with emergency cases in mind. Good luck and safe flying friend!

I saw the coast on the right and I could not stop wondering why he did not divert to the coast to save the drone. It was much closer than home point

Tips for when you crash into the ocean, don't dry it right away, presume you don't have proper tool or any experience in electronic repair. First, remove the battery, soak the drone into fresh water, let it sit there for 30 min (change the water 2-3 times) then dry it outside for a bout 1-2 hours. Find a sealable container, put the drone and alot of silica gel in together, seal the container and let it sit there for 2-3 days.
If you know how to disasemble things, just take the drone apart, wash every part with distiled water then clean them with contact cleaner spray, let them dry for a day and you good to go.

I remember my first drone phantom 2. As a pilot of an actual plane always look for a alternate landing spot. You could have turned right landed on the shore and then went and picked your drone up very simple.
I actually flew on that direction on a previous flight, but I would loose signal because there are some trees that cover the radio signals from where I was standing. So turning right wouldn't have saved me either because I would have lost signal and who know what the drone would have tried to do, or I wouldn't have been able to find it afterwards.

I was doing a range test a few months ago. On the way back I had a doubt that my battery is low for the return. so I just turned off the video recording for lowering battery consumption. and it worked well 😉

When you hit 2km out and you didn't turn back I almost started shouting at the screen "What are you doing!?!?" :D

I got my avata just very recently and this is one of my worsts fears! I do a little bit of range tests of my own to see how far I can go and when is it best to go back, helps me gauge a little better when I can push it to the limits. I make it a habit to turn around at 60% or so.

I took my dji mini 2 to over 5000 metres, hung around over the top of a mountain for a Couple of minutes before heading back home. By the time I was about 1700 metres from home it started to come down by itself. But I kept pushing it overriding the auto landing, and by the time I was about 250 metres it was down to 0% battery and still made it back. I like the fact that you pushed it further than the auto return, which is what I did.
Yeah, it feels like that last 1% lasts for way longer than the last 10% don't you think so?

@@Vandringslust , I was glad I made it back too, as were the people at the lookout where I took off from. They were wishing me luck from about 3 kilometres out as I was reading out the battery percentage. Unfortunately a few weeks ago I took it for a journey up a creek. Got like about 3 metres from the clearing and I hit a branch, plop, straight in the creek, tried to get it to work, but it was dead. Took it to a dji store to see about getting it fixed and they sent it away. It was a fried motherboard and at the time I couldn’t afford the cost of the repair. Since then I’m paying off a an AVATA from a friend who realised that he didn’t like fpv after all, as he’s more of a plane flier. Love my AVATA, so, although I miss my mini 2, I’ve got my newer model to enjoy.
If you ever put anything good in salt water, rinse if off thoroughly with fresh warm water, which will remove all
Of the salt. Then completely disassemble everything as much as possible. Use compressed air to dry as much as possible. Then place with rice in a sealed container for the rice to have full drying effect. After that, there’s still a chance it won’t work, but it will give you the best chance of it ever working again.
You should have rinsed the drone when got back home. To remove as much saltwater as possible. It actually might have survived

I think you know there was zero good ideas in that flight... Well I guess if I stretch it, the one good decision was to get dji care refresh😮
I know, it was actually pretty stupid, DJI care refresh was my savior.
Good lessons learned from this.
I've been in a similar situation a time or two. I know it's a bit late now but in hindsight when you realized you couldn't make it all the way back to the launch point you should have made way towards the nearest land, like off to the right where the power plant looking facility was located. The drone could have easily made it to the shore there & you could have retrieved the bird. Care Refresh is the bomb. I buy the 2-year plan with every drone. Rarely need it but when you do the Express option is awesome.
I give you a lot of credit. Mistakes mistakes. meh! You're insured! Amazing that your tides recede that much allowing you can go looking for it 900meters away. Also give you props for how calm you were. My heart was racing just watching 😛.

The tide is crazy! It goes even further! In low tide I can walk like 2km!

yes this is a good example of knowledge vs wisdom. drone vets saw a lot of red flags from the start. sport mode in the wind for example is going to drain the battery faster than you plan for. and as others have stated you can get to shore faster than making the whole trip back while you still have battery. better than taking a dip usually.
PS:
DJI pilots have a lot of trust right out the box. i have seen home builds just have bad parts even a battery could shit out on you at anytime, its good to be confident in skills but im still wary flying over open water with no recovery plan in place.
You always learn more by trying new things but sometimes better to remain in the realm of the known, especially with strangers and expensive equipment involved. good luck brothers in flight!
so ya higher speed + wind = lowest battery range possible :( 5min-20min flight time in the fine print. gps speedometer limits it but it doesn't tell you how much throttle it takes to fight the wind and stay moving max speed. with a full manual drone you would realize that you're giving it more throttle to maintain speed / altitude and it's much easier to know when ur going hard on your battery and should expect less flight time.
software driven vehicles sound good and do a lot of good. but they'll never be as intuitive as a manual device with human sensor instead. theres simply no way to have enough sensors onboard and not enough lines of code to account for all the information we take for granted as conscious. these devices can fool our very consciousness to have blind faith sometimes free will is taken out of the equation due to lack of synergy between man and machine.
Also what could of stopped the motors turning is the magnets in the motors attract magnetic sand... noticed this when landing drone on beach , it just sucks that sht into the bell magnets and grinds em.
I almost ended up in the same situation with my Mini pro flying over the ocean last/late summer. Totally miscalculated the wind and barely made it back to shore. Also got an Avata now and really careful flying to far out (it's also illegal flying oos where I live). Haven't bought insurance yet but it might be a good idea indeed.

I'm wondering, rincing of the drone with tap water before drying, maybe an option to get rid of the salt(water)?
Yes, when your drone goes in salt water rinse it off for a minute or so without the battery, and try to dissasemble it as much as you can and then blow it with an airdryer from a distance and dry off the rest with a towel as good as you can, then leave it for a day and assemble it back and there is a good chance that it would still work

I'm glad you made it! For me the problem was that if I had gone towards the closest land I would have lost signal.
But luckily I had DJI care and I got a replacement

Love the idea of the range test. Maybe over water on a windy day is not the best time and place. Definitely felt your pain and put one in the drink myself. lol

Given that you crashed in salt water, your best shot at recovery would have been to make sure the battery was removed, then dip it in fresh water to dissolve (remove) all the salt. Than let it all sit and dry out for a couple of days.
As a general rule, nothing survives salt water. If you had crashed into fresh water you might have been able to dry it out but salt water is like acid. it begins to oxidate anything metal it touches. Once it penetrates the inside of the drones circuitry, it's already too late. Like others on this post I was saying the same thing while I watched your video. Why did you not turn right and go to the nearest land mass? Let's say that that building in the background is a power station and off limits to the public. You showed us that later, at low tide, the coast is accessible. Even if a rain storm came through, the drone would have only suffered from fresh water damage, but with no salt. Your chances of drying it out and returning to flight status would be very good. I have had great success taking apart water saturated electronics and using rubbing alcohol to clean everything, and then using a hair dryer to evaporate the alcohol. I then put everything back together and well ah, The item snaps back to life with a new battery installed. And also, it never hurts to just ask people. You could have landed your drone on the land and simply asked the building personal if you could retrieve your drone. Most of the time, I've found people to be very accommodating and even if they said no, it's no greater loss than dumping it in the ocean. I will give you credit for one thing though. You didn't give up. You stayed on the controller until the very end. I was quite surprised when the drone suddenly went from a hover to allowing you to go past zero. You actually had just enough time to make it to the nearest land mass but you chose to go to the home point instead. You had two choices. Nearest land mass or Homepoint. You made the wrong choice but hey, we've all done that at one time or another. Anyway your video was a real nail biter. I'm glad you got another drone. You now know the limits of its capabilities. With smaller drones I don't even fly if the wind is strong. I pay attention to such things now. Cheers!

I think if you would of rinse it off with water way before drying it in rice it would of worked fine but it dried up with the salt water and destroyed the motors.
heres a tip always be at least 75 metres in the air so when your landing itll take longer meaning youll have more time to get to the shore

Great video. However, future reference, always turn back @ 50% battery. You turned back @ 40% battery. Right away I knew you was not going to make that trip back. I flew from Guyana to Suriname (boarding countries) with my Air2s over water and made it back using 50% battery to go.

Distance test flying right over the open ocean plus strong windy conditions... perfect recipe for loosing your drone... you should have done this test over uninhabited terra firma... in that case - despite all of the other mistakes made - you would have had a fair chance (in fact, for sure) to find the drone either on top of a tree (worst case scenario) or somewhere among the bushes or on the ground and the avata would still be alive and happily flying... anyway, sorry for not being able to resurrect the avata... fortunately you were covered by dji care. @Liam you should have rinsed the drone in fresh water the drone would have had a better chance of survival but not gaurenteed. Thank god for care refresh. When watching your video I was calling you all kinds of stupid to be honest but best thing to do is learn from it buddy wind will kill your return if its against you don't wait for the drone to say low battery return before hand plan your flight with the current weather and surroundings before you take off. At least you still have a replacement to keep enjoying the avata happy flying

In a situation like that, you have to fly toward the closest piece of land. You could it make it to the land on the right side of the screen and recovered later. I repair drones and let me tell you that putting your drone on rice is a really bad idea. The rice will release a white residue that will get into everything. On top of that, you crashed on salted water, salt will damage all the electronics. If your drone crashes in salted water, you have a very small window to save it. You have to dip the drone into fresh water real quick to get the salt out. Then take it apart and hand dry everything. Even doing all that, the chances of saving the drone are very low.

Mine has taken a dive a few times in fresh water. Next time I suggest you wrap the camera and use WD-40 on all the electronic parts, and motors, and then give it a try - if u still have, do it now!

You could have tried to land to the right on the coast instead of making all the way where you are at. You also consume more battery at high speed than moderate speed. Even when you had a second chance you insisted in going to the original departure point instead of landing it to the coast line to the right. You are lucky you bought the warranty.

You could have switched to N mode and probably returned it home. It uses less battery on N.
6:25 Here you had to go to the right, towards the nearest shore. You had to save the drone, a new distance record, you can do it another time. 🤔🤔🤔
Actually you fly to sea area need to check the wind and battery is about 50% and ready to return and land I will return probably 39 % , but I never thought 2 % still very last. I flying with manual mode more power consume keep in mind don’t always return >30% is 1 way ticket

You're probably being blocked by trees, mountains or walls. When I start seeing yellow antennas on the HD, I immediately pull the drone up to find a direct, clean line between the goggles and the drone, that way I can always have a clean signal. I fly my drone in the city a lot, so I've been in the red antennas more than a few times 😅. Good luck!
@@romuloescamilla4014nope it was a warranty issue they gave me a new drone and goggles much better range and open sea I go out to 3 km. I could go further if not for battery limit they sell range extenders online I wonder if it will improve range especially aoround trees and mountains

I think if you very carefully gave it a quick rinse in some clean warm water, this would have washed away most, if not all of the sea salt, and then you put it in a bowl of rice, but not for a few days, it needs to be a few weeks, in a warm dry place, this might have done the trick! All the dry crusty sea salt would be mostly washed away that was jamming the motors! 🙂👍🏻
When. You notice you cannot make it put it tail wind go normal mode power to 75% and aim for the more direct to the shore and pray

I promise you, putting your wet devices in rice does nothing but clog your stuff up with rice particles. I repair phones and always try to tell people that rice does NOT help at all.

2. Letting the thing sit with SALT WATER, instead of rinsing it IMMEDIATELY with destilled water or alcohol - very smart
3. Rice for drying, instead of circulating warm air - very smart

If any electronics make contact with salt water, the first thing you should do is to remove the battery so it doesn’t create a short circuit. Then wash the electronics with fresh water or even better with carbonated water to get rid of the salt residuals, so it won’t get corrosion after a while. Then dry the electronic with a hair blower in low mode and no heat. In this case the electronic is a drone and even if it will work again, I’ll never fly it close to people because it may malfunction

You would have easily have made it back if you flew normal mode, also why didn’t you head towards land much closer and placed it in a tree along the coast, oh well you will know for next time that the normal mode is the most efficient way to fly back by leaps and bounds. Sports mode consumes battery almost twice as fast as normal mode.

Salt water is a killer. sat too long in that salt and that is that. if you could have retrieved the drone just after the crash dunk and rinse in water it may have been saved....maybe
you lost so much time when you gave up. you still had some percentage left and it doesnt shut off right away at 0. you could have made it back. well, you are a newbie i can see. you are learning

Hello, you made hundreds of mistakes at once. First of all, not knowing the direction of the wind BEFORE going out to fly (preferably on the way back, which is the most important part of the flight). You also should have stopped recording to save battery (an incredibly dumb mistake). You should have flown higher, to gain time while descending (another very silly mistake). You should never have flown in sport mode (because it consumes much more battery, considering that you had little). I do not understand how common sense is not applied in these cases, and how a lack of knowledge can damage such an expensive device. I'm sorry about the drone really. I didn't get to save the drone unfortunately, but I have DJI Care so I got a replacement!

@@gtmanualso if I was him I would have tried to get to the closer part of the shore. Considering he had about 2k of distance left in the battery he could have made it to the shore (not where he was but the closer part of the beach) and landed and recovered the drone
Range test could have been hover the drone and drive away from it, instead of fly the drone away from you. That way if it auto lands you are fine

Yep that was about the dumbest range test ever why on earth would you range test over water also when coming back and you knew you werent going to make it why didnt you head for that land on the right you could have saved it and also when the drone goes into return to home mode never never override it I know this loss hurts but you did this to yourself lesson learned dont range test over water because no my friend it doesnt float.
