  • See the latest addition to the OldSchoolStereo.com test bench...the NAD 1130 Preamp. This NAD 1130 was available in the late 1980's and is very unique in it's ability to provide a VERY high output signal via RCA's. Watch me overview the 1130, then test the line voltage output of the iPod Nano, the NAD's normal line level outputs, then lastly the "high level" preamp outs. Very interesting results!! You can see the results live with the Velleman HPS-50 o'scope and SMD / D'Amore Engineering DD-1 to monitor the signal.

I found this video useful 7 years after it was made. About 18 years ago I got a NAD 1155 preamplifier off ebay for use as my bedroom stereo. It is almost identical to the 1130 except it has more inputs and allows listening to a different source than the recording source. When I first hooked up my two amps, each having two speakers, I was shocked how good they sounded. A few years ago we moved and it seemed that the stereo still sounded good by not stunning, even though the amps and speakers were the same. This video tipped me off that the amp with the really good speakers was connected to the normal outputs while the amp with the mediocre speakers was connected to the high outputs. I switched them so the good speakers are running off the high outputs and the sound is great again! For people interested in buying these fantastic sounding preamps, I must warn you now - you have to get up and walk over to the stereo to change the volume.

I also have a NAD 1130 preamp. I inherited it from my uncle. I've been reading up on power amps and pre amps. I don't know much about these but I want to get hooked into this stuff.

NAD = New Acoustic Dimension 😉
They have built some of the best sounding audiophile kit without costing the earth.
And vintage kit is worth buying if it's been looked after.

Old Nad pre amps and receivers were excellent l had the C350 integrated and it didn’t even put out 1.4 volts in the pre section It was made in the early 2000 point being stay away from Newer NAD and buy stuff from the mid to late 80’s this was NAD golden era.

Yes, NAD and Proton made some great equipment back in the day (brother & sister companies I believe). I still have and use an NAD 3220pe (as a preamp only) to drive my Proton D1200 amplifier, and it sounds amazing! I also have the matching Proton 1100 preamp but it needs to be repaired (most likely recapped) But yes, great clean power with plenty of headroom. Please keep the great videos coming. 🙂🔊🎚👍

I've been thinking about getting a dock anyway to keep the Nano charged. It is a first gen Nano, but has the Wolfsen audio chip for excellent sound quality. I may also move to a laptop with an external DAC in the future, who knows. Thanks for the comment.

I should have said 1.7V of clean output...I attached the update video I did last year showing the Yamaha receiver tested. I've used the iPod by itself for only a few quick tests, not the full tests I do.

Yeah, it's cool, just won't need to turn the volume up all the way! I'll mark where 4v and 8v are on the volume knob. For more precise control of the volume for the 2V max input amps, I'll just use the standard RCA outs on this preamp

A tip about ipod and audio. If you want better sound out of your ipod, get a dock connector audio cable, or a dock that can handle audio. That bypasses the cruddy headphone power stage, and pulls the audio straight from the DAC in the ipod. It improves the sound a lot!

Nice to see one tested. I use an H/K preamp for my speaker amps, and it has in my opinion much better sound...but my NAD1000 has that high output and is awesome for driving the sub amp. Makes for quick balancing, and the high output makes it great when listening at very low levels or when the mix is short on bass.

i am thinking of purchasing this preamp, presently using the 3120 connected to a nad 2155, must admit lots of power on tap and the sound is reallygood.thanks, for your insight into this preamp, much appreciated.

The NAD has a low frequency filter active in the out position which was used to filter out extremely low frequencies which would cause feedback to a turntable. I am not sure how important these frequencies are to your testing but you may want to check the level and decide if you want to defeat the filter. The bass eq was extra boost for low frequencies but they were higher than the infra-sonic filter.

    Me gustaría oír si opinión.
Gracias, saludos desde Santo Domingo República Dominicana 🇩🇴

Question: I currently own the NAD 3240Pe amp and I use laptop to listen to music via 3.5mm line output to RCA input on the amp. Would I be better off upgrading to a NAD DAC or upgrading to a preamp such as the NAD 1130. or both?

I remember when 2v in the car audio world was HIGH voltage and 500ma was the norm. How things change.
It's wonderful how studio equipment just does what it says it does when you buy a reputable brand. No guessing if they were padding the numbers.

thanks. that was interesting. i got the vintage bug last summer and put in an old alpine deck with .5v on the rca's. wow, what a big difference. the pioneer it replaced was 6v. (but pioneer does not have those 6 green buttons/chicklets that made it look so damn sexy!)

Hi Gary , how do I get two amps connected to the 1130 amp since the level are different?

    • @garyfoster1611
      @garyfoster1611 3 роки тому

@@bendermi you will need rca splitters if running full range i run my source through a 30 band eq to the nad 3400 cd input which is the 1300 and 2400 combined then take the pre out to my crossover then run the mid highs which are 8 klipsch synergy speakers 4 tower dual 6in and 4 bookshelves 6in to the input section of the amp the sub freq goes to 2 nad 2400s one each bridged to a rockford p3/15 this allows the 3400 preamp section to control all the treble bass volume ect

      I'm considering to buy a 1300 with a 2155 for 250 € and a 7155 for 90 € , I'm hesitating because I've heard of distortion because of the splitter cable.
I've in an earlier setup used the headphone output on my receiver to connect an amp for my subwoofers, can I do that with the 1300?
      Edit :
Also this method should cause distortion, but i cant find thd on headphone output on the net.
