    The 7240PE receiver consists of the 3240PE integrated amplifier, with its vast reserves of clean, solid power for the the wide dynamic range of modern recordings, plus an exceptionally sensitive digital tuner.
    Power Envelope design
    While the 7240PE is rated at 40 watts/channel of steady-state power, its +6 dB of IHF dynamic headroom means that its dynamic power for musical transients exceeds 160 watts/channel at 8 ohms and 200 watts/channel at 4 or 2 ohms. Even with long 200-millisecond tone-bursts, representing the full duration of musical notes and chords, the 7240PE produces an impressive 100 watts per channel.
    High-current output stage
    The 7240PE de-livers up to 25 amperes per channel to ensure precise electromagnetic control of the speaker’s voice-coil, even with impedances as low as 2 ohms

    I've had a NAD 3240pe since 1989 and I always thought it had a little more power than the advertised numbers, thanks for confirming. It's still running good on a Cerwin Vega 12" subwoofer and the combination makes for some very powerful bass tones.

    I've used an NAD 3240 PE for over 30 years now and It's never been in the shop. The volume control's a bit scratchy now, so I probably should have it cleaned and serviced for anything that may be at risk. Liked it so much I got a 7240 as well.
    The power on this thing was always crazy, but what made it great was the quality of the music. Just very impressive all the way around.

    I recently dug out my 30 year old 7240 to pair with a mid- 80s turntable. It was the only amp in my collection that had phono inputs. The 7240 was hooked up to a pair of B&W 803D and to my amazement, it had no trouble driving those supposedly power hungry speakers. Much respect to the NAD designers who put functional integrity above bells-and-whistles specifications.

    Dug one of these out of a trash can by someones driveway, brought it home, cleaned it up, checked the offset, Works flawlessly and has for about 4 years, running it into a pair of the smaller advents I dug out of bulk trash pickup, put a set of foam replacements on the speakers and recapped the crossovers, They look great and sound great, found a matching CD player on Craigslist for $35.00, that's my Rig,I think I'm all in around $75.00, Sounds Friggin Great, everyone who comes over wants to play with my "Old" Stereo rig..... There are deals out there fella's, just saw a complete NAD Componant rig with integrated amp and KLH speakers go for $300.00 on craigslist,

    Bought one of these a couple of years ago, Im using an old set of Advents and sounds phenomenal! I'm not new to hi-fi, had many receivers, amps and preamps and this one is right up there with some of the best I have owned. Yes, I hear they are a nightmare to work on, I hope mine keeps on playing. I had another one with the amp section blown, but the pre section was sweet and I used it as my main preamp for years. I was lucky to find another one in pristine condition and working excellent.

    I bought a 100w per channel NAD recently and was incredibly impressed. I knew it had some dynamic reserve but I couldn’t play it loud enough to clip and still be okay with sitting so close to the speakers in my living room. And then I switched it from 4 ohms to 8 ohms and it was audibly even louder. I’d bet it was capable of over 600w per channel.

    I know this brand and have an NAD 208 power amp. More than ample for my speakers. It’s pristine in appearance and performance. I would send it to you for a dyno test, but the shipping would put me in the poor farm! I kid you not. The transformer weighs 37 pounds on it’s on. The wiring in it is point to point and nicely done. I have had it since it was new and I could not sell it on a bet. Treasured it is!

    Really nice seeing that. i worked at NAD one summer in the warehouse where they had the warrantee repair shop, i did QC inspections of the repaired equipment. I have an old NAD 3080 still in service (140Wpc).
    I also have a set of those Optimus LX5II with additionally an old Morel 3" dome midrange filling in 800-8K and 8" Urban Audio (sherwood) sub (for one of my computer/room setup's) powered by an Optimus STAV-3770 receiver (5x100W@8ohms .9%).
    (the comment about the lx5's being midrange shy would love these old 90's era morel midranges. i put them in boston acoustics A40 boxes where they sit at ear level reclined, the lx5's are at ear level when i'm upright. the 8" subs are no slouches at home in 1cu' boxes on the floor, they play well below 38Hz [i rewired/built all the passive crossovers])
    but my chevy pickup is mostly all a/d/s/ !

    NAD gear was very intelligently designed and performed like much higher end equipment. Having a small receiver or integrated that could handle 2 ohms was unheard of generally. I just set up a 3240PE integrated for a friend while his regular amp gets fixed. It's the same amplifier stage as this receive. Powering a pair of Klipsch RF7 speakers is effortless and has tremendous headroom.

    The 7240 was actually the higher end of two models from its original production year (the smaller being the 7225pe). The 7400 and 7100 models were in fact later models. It's possible that NAD clung onto this as its lowest end offering along with the new offerings in order to give customers more purchase options.

    Very impressive, I wish I could run a dynamic text on my Onkyo tx-sr604. My plate amplifier gave out on me a while back so I'm using the two front channels of it to run my Polk psw10(plate amplifier no longer works and speaker is unhooked from it and ran directly to the front left channel) and a sundown LCS 12. The Onkyo website claims 225w @ 3ohms, the Polk is running at 4ohms I'm guessing and the sundown is dual 4 wired down to 2ohms. The receiver has the ability to tune the separate channels to play certain frequencies, so the front channels are playing at 40hz with no vocals coming through. it's pretty impressive and at volume 70 out of 100 the sundown looks to be near it's mechanical xmax

  • @thebestofall007
    @thebestofall007 7 років тому +1

    This receiver seems to be using discrete output transistors, not those STK packs or any other "amp on a chip or ic" shortcut, which is why it has such good dynamic range, along with a robust power supply.

    I used to own a NAD 2400 THX. Very nice amp indeed. As usual I don't know why the hek I got rid of it.

  • @roylikesitlikethat

    It stands head and shoulders above any amp at price performance ratio.
    The highs dont have harsh definition like amps like Pioneer, Kenwood. The bass is quick like an Audiolab or Kardon amps. I would classify it as neutral sounding. The PE design is the killer indeed, especially with listening to classical music when the contrasts from soft to loud passages can trick most to turn any amp louder.

    Hello I own this unit. I cut the 4 ac wires to the extra AC outlets last year and did a poor job on marking them. Please be kind, I know it was my fault. My goal is to install an IEC socket and use a better power cord. I have done this before. Is there a way to contact you, offline, or could you reply to which of the 2 Blue wires from the bigger transformer near the back go, and there is a white and a blue wire from the smaller transformer. I Repairman want 75.00 to 100 just to look at this unit. Reaching out for your help. Thank you.

      I have a Kenwood KR 9600. and that Beast weighs at least 50 pounds and I think that's a 100 to 150 watts per Channel. the thing was built I think in the early seventies and it is still kicking out matter fact I'm using to JL Audio 12w6 wired at 6ohms in studio monitors just to keep the impedance close to the horns and mids

      Ehren Krause i have owned a few receivers from the 70s, marantz and pioneers rightfully command the high dollars today and are my favorites. I got my hands on a Kenwood of the era and opened it up, something I saw really disappointed me. Jumper wires (3-4) soldered across the board at the factory, indicating a major mistake in the original circuit board architecture. A big no no in the industry. Otherwise most of it was ok.

      BigDWiz I contacted the company a few days ago and you answered my question in few hours. Too bad there no clear sign on my unit on connecting a active subwoofer. I've got plenty of passive ones.

  • @ElectoneGuy
    @ElectoneGuy 7 років тому +1

    Looking at your tests, looks like the amp needs to be re-biased as one channel is slightly more powerful than the other. Both idle current and bias are adjustable on the 7240.

    • @wal
      @wal  7 років тому

      Maybe so, however I've tested a lot of 2 channel amps an always show some discrepancy between the channels. Some more than others for sure.

    • @ElectoneGuy
      @ElectoneGuy 7 років тому +2

      It would be interesting to see what your measurements are after a bias and idle current adjustment to factory specs.

    • @jeroenschuuring6060
      @jeroenschuuring6060 7 років тому +1

      Electone_Guy the difference is in the soft clipping circuits. these amp boards were built and/or sorted as matching pairs for left and right with very small tollerances.

    Just a thought here, Im not too knowledgeable about this stuff but would retro-fitting some bigger internal speaker wires increase this things output at all??

    • @wal
      @wal  7 років тому

      It would not hurt, but I doubt the difference would be noticeable. They are very short runs.

    • @HashCracker
      @HashCracker 7 років тому

      I see. After how good it did I just thought they were possibly bottle-necking the system, theyd HAVE to be the weakest link lol

    • @ncskywalker1
      @ncskywalker1 6 років тому

      HashCracker no difference except a thinner wallet.

    • @ncskywalker1
      @ncskywalker1 6 років тому

      HashCracker imo the bottleneck is the Power Envelope circuit itself. Just not a big fan of those units. Much prefer the earlier japan 7140 and 2155/3155/7155 non-PE models as the reliability was much higher. The PE models sound fine to a point, but once that secondary/high voltage power supply in the PE circuit is exhausted they can bring about nasty distortion. I point the finger at the Taiwan/Singapore origins, flaky heatsinks and less robust PE power supply to accommodate "+6db headroom."

    • @BreathEmpowerment
      @BreathEmpowerment 6 років тому

      Andrew Harvel I just got one for cheap today (my first piece of NAD gear) and I think I know what you mean. After preliminary tests I wanted to see what it could do when really pushed, ready to turn down the volume immediately once I heard distortion. Man when that distortion hit, it was probably the nastiest clipping sound I've ever heard (I did have the "soft clipping" off for the tests). Not sure what it's fate will be yet, but it sure doesn't come close to my Heathkit AA-1600 amp. Still, I had it cranking for well over an hour and it barely got warm, not bad at all and certainly no complaints for the price I got it for
