  • Join me for a 50 km hike through the Australian bush. I set up camp near one of my favourite places and get hit by a hectic thunderstorm. I see some amazing wilderness views and walk a long way. Please note: some wind noise and colourful language left in to ensure the video captures this trip authentically.

Beautiful country, it’s my favourite location. You did not make your destination, it won’t be going away, maybe try again with a hiking buddy and aim for next spring. I think you should try again.

Good one mate! Knowing when to call it quits is VERY important.. better to turn back than regret pushing on. You still managed to get some amazing views in your favourite region and took us along with you. I count that as a win.
Thanks for continuing to share your adventures with us all. Happy trails.

Great video Erik. Those mammatus cloud patterns at 11:07 are a scary sight to see when out hiking! They require strong convective currents / intense shearing to form and are a warning sign that severe to extreme weather patterns will follow. Glad you made it through safely and sounds like the right call to head back when you did. :)

Thanks very much! Yeah the mammatus clouds look so cool (only second time I've ever seen them in person) but after that experience, definitely hoping I don't see them on the trail again anytime soon. Cheers Erik

That was some solid kays you did Erik! But with such beautiful Country to traverse through, it makes it worth your while and would have been a great experience. Then on the flipside, you also experienced just how treacherous and dangerous it can be as well. Thankfully you thought it through and trusted your 'gut' and cut the trip short. For me, I think the great lesson I took out of this trip, is to be happy and content with that decision and not be sad or angry about it or regret it. As the saying goes, there's no point crying over spilt milk, just clean it up and move one. There'll be another chance yet for you Mate... you'll conquer that molehi... I mean Mountain one day! (Ps. maybe avoiding multiple storm fronts might help?!😝) Thanks for a wonderful hike in the great Aussie Bush Erik 😎

Only a fool goes against their gut feeling Erik. Sound judgement makes wise decisions meaningful. Consider it as just one more mountain to climb if it gets in your way .. there's always another day coming after midnight. I remember you sitting having coffee on that ledge previously after the fires I think it was. Fantastic country and scenery in our great Aussie bush my friend. Thanks. Bushyboy Oz.

It is both beautiful and brutal country that is for sure. I'm glad you took that away from the video as it's the same lesson I learnt out there and I'll absolutely try and avoid the storm fronts next time, haha. Cheers Erik

Thanks bushboy, yes 100% agree on sound judgement making decisions meaningful. Nothing re-enforces that quite like when you can feel it. Definitely one of the best places out there to enjoy a coffee. I've been lucky to have a few now in different sports above that gorge. I'm sure the next one will taste just as good too!

Epic trip Erik and thanks again for your honesty. Mate, you’re not dead yet, so plenty of time to get hungry again to tackle that objective. Don’t you just hate that with the GoPro. Done that myself and it’s a major pain in the backside when you run out of battery power and I totally get not wanting to get to the bottom of the back. Such a pain. I have just brought 4 more GoPro batteries just to avoid the power drain for my next trip. Big call hiking in the dark. I have never tried that but I guess you had the fire trail to follow and hopefully a good GPS map. Keep ‘em coming Erik. Your adventures are great and have been a huge inspiration for my own adventures.

Metal sends up feeders for lightning to hit, umbrellas and tents and tripods attract strikes. The thunder is fine but voltage is a no no. Time for a scotch Erik 🤣😃👍 25:00. Sub whatable? 28:00 easy campese time for a celebratory drink . Tea, coffee, ?. Next year Erik? Maybe with a Mate in better weather with your leg checked out and a good couple of brews…….really is amazing country..reminds me somewhat of the sandstone cliffs in the middle of the Grampians National Park. Between Stawell and Horsham in Victoria,Plenty of caves to shelter from lightning strong wind and bad weather. Always a treat watching your videos Erik. Looking forward to your next 👍🍻

Thanks Eric, yeah felt very vulnerable in that tent. 25:00 - I might have had a cheeky swig of gin after things calmed down a bit. 28:00 = Sub optimal. Yes maybe I'll try again in the future, but we will see.

@@ERIKOFFTRACK good call though Erik, I ve been caught out with a ripped tent blown away in a storm like that. Difficult to start a fire to get warm . The lightning is attracted to metal so it really put me in a difficult situation…good call Erik, next trip will be in better conditions all round . Love your videos thank you for sharing your experiences.👍🍻 sub optimal…true, very true

a great lesson on listening to your instinct man. Most people end up in trouble because they refuse to turn back for whatever reason. This reminded me of that trip where you hid in a tiny cave basically under a rock while a huge storm rolled over, was it in the same area?

and i thought i was the only one hated by the nature. Everytime i plan a camping/hiking trip it ends up side down. the latest one being me and a bunch of friends camping on a beach recommended by a well known 4x4 channel here on YT only to get our campsite flooded with high tide at 2 am in middle of night and basically being smashed by flies, panicking and packing camp and losing a whole bunch of gear in process.
