    So much less concerned by the growing collection of baby oil in the garage now. 👍🏼 Thanks Chris! Keep reassuring your wife with such infovlogs as this!

    As an untrained commuter cyclist interested in time trialling that is waiting for a buggered knee to recover, I really enjoy the time trial content Chris. Hope to see more of it and how your important TT events go this year like NSW champs. Thanks for the video!

      Hey man, cheers for the comment. Yeh the TT stuff certainly is appealing just from the completely quantifiable nature of it. Progress is slow though mate, hard to stay with it.

    Man! One of your best videos so far. Really good quality and awesome edit - content is always great but I want to still highlight that is really inspiring and entertaining. Kudos!!!! Ps: the Nero coaching kit is awesome! I did 320k with Danny here in the UK 2 weeks ago and the kit can't be any better #chapeau

      I know right! I genuinely think the reason I am spending more time on the time trail bike is the bike looks like THAT

    Great Video I would be interesting to see how you evaluate your rides & decide how and what to work on

    Similar line of thinking in a recent FasCat podcast - next level TT is about not just flat power curve, but about being able to keep speed on difficult sections of course by using above threshold surges wisely. Also, recent GCN video with David Miller talks about fitting the course to the riders strengths. Lots of similar thinking in both.

    • @ChrisMillerCycling
      @ChrisMillerCycling  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for the comment man. That is actually quite bizarre, a few people have mentioned the GCN vid, crazy thing is it never saw it, just came to my own conclusions. Until next month then, and we’ll have another crack.

      Have you ever looked into best bike split? Those guys are taking a very analytic approach to answering the pacing question.

    Really interesting comment Chris re uphill efforts equating to faster overall times. I think that cosistency of effort is something to strive for so as to not blow your lid, but certainly there is evidence to suggest that punching up hills can get you good time gains, as well as competitive gains. Thanks again for the great video mate

    Very interesting thoughts regarding pacing strategy Chris. After doing my first TT on Sunday i was thinking the same thing after haemorrhaging time going uphill to the guys who finished in front of me. Do you hold your TT position or do you sit up/get out of the saddle ?

  • @brionygreenwood6092
    @brionygreenwood6092 6 років тому +1

    Yes, if ride A and ride B have the same average power, but on ride A you pushed harder on the climbs and less on the flat or descents, then ride A will be faster (even though the avg power for the ride is the same). This is the case though for both Porte and Dennis.

    • @brionygreenwood6092
      @brionygreenwood6092 6 років тому

      It’s not so much an art, it’s actually physics. You can test different pacing strategies using tools like bestbikespilt.com. Or otherwise check out this excellent book written by 3 nerdy Dutch guys (takes one to know one!): thesecretofcycling.com
      This book has the mathematical equations to calculate your speed, the same formulas that best bike split use. You can use these to devise the best pacing strategy. What it comes down to though is that it’s faster to try and even out your speed over the course, ie. push a little harder on this hills and a little less on the descents, push harder into the wind and a little less with a tailwind, all the while aiming to be completely spent at the finish.

    • @brionygreenwood6092
      @brionygreenwood6092 6 років тому

      Here’s a brain teaser for you. You’re riding an out and back course, downhill on the way out, uphill on the way back. You do the course 3 times on 3 different days, each one with the same avg power, say 300 W, and in this example your Wattage is consistent throughout. First day is a headwind on the out leg & tailwind on return. Second day is the opposite. Third day is no wind at all. Which day is the fastest???? Turns out the first day is the fastest - the time differences in these scenarios can be quite significant.. On the first day your speed is more consistent over the course because of the wind.

    A recent video speaking to an ex pro time trialer, he said he focuses on speed only. Maintaining the speed, so this means he goes as hard as he can on the hills and caries the speed on the flat. This is counter intuitive to a smooth paced time trial, but them's the beans, it's all about maintaining that speed and adjusting to make sure it stays up there.

    • @ChrisMillerCycling

      No doubt there is truth in that man, but that is a pro talking and someone who has no doubt learnt through years of competing and had professional scientific assistance to determine that works for him. I suppose that is my point, time Trialling is such a personal thing, and it seems the only way to determine what works for you is...time Trialling...oh and doing vlogs about it 😂

      On any course that isn't flat variable power is more ideal pacing the question is how much to vary. A lot of people get thus wrong ease up too much and don't get speed up on the downhills which really effects their time in the end.

    Maybe you need a pointier hat like the guy at 6:00 ? Just curious, what are the typical fastest / slowest times for the 43k ?
    I'm impressed that you can vlog while riding round the Bay without hitting a pram or dog...

    • @ChrisMillerCycling

      Sub Hour is the real mark. I’ve managed one sub-60, early last year in summer, since then it’s been a pretty consistent 1:00/1:01, Ben Dybell has the record around the 56min mark, and there are only 13 guys who have gone Sub-60, so it is a pretty small club. As for VLOGGING around the bay run, the looks I get from people are the best, it actually makes the whole thing worth while 😂

      Yeah in fairness being on a road bike with shallow section wheels, and normal kit besides a super long finned (aeroplane wing) style helmet from the year 2000 probably isn't the best/most aerodynamic so that might be holding me back a little.

    Nice video. If the feeling was good on the day maybe you don’t need to stick to a set number and could push the pace up mid ride? Oh and check out rule 28 socks.

    • @ChrisMillerCycling
      @ChrisMillerCycling  6 років тому +1

      Believe it or not, I actually didn't watch that (I don't tend to watch many other UA-cam channels other then Tyler). In fact I was hoping to make a blog about aero helmets, but I couldn't stop thinking about this element of time trialling. That said, I did go and watch it after some of the guys mentioned it in the comments, really interesting

  • @chrisvanbuggenum871

    Definitely take no offense cuz I'm sure you could beat him but have you watched Oliver Bridgewood's video on time trials. I found it super interesting and even if you learn nothing I'm sure you will find solace to see someone else struggle with the same art of time trialling.

    ua-cam.com/video/jTV6yOkZQ-w/v-deo.html - Chris, have you seen this recent video, David Millar has a different take on some of your comments, in particular about riding the course in a way that suits your own strengths, quite interesting and a funny coincidence these two videos were published around the same time. I think I need to get myself a time trial bike soon, there's something about them that is inexplicably cool.

      HAHA! Thanks Joe, yeh I mentioned below that was a strange coincidence. I was actually going to do a VLOG about the crit we did on Saturday and then TT happened and I entered the rabbit warren that is Time Trial chat 😂 ... That said, I think David (no relation unfortunately) probably has a bit more experience on the matter.

    • @mr_musette
      @mr_musette 6 років тому

      Chris Miller Cycling good stuff, looking forward to seeing what else is down this time trial rabbit hole! 😂 are you going to jump on the current trend of aero bars angled up with your hands just in front of your face or are you set on your current position?

    He says the same thing. Ride for speed, not power.

    • @ChrisMillerCycling
      @ChrisMillerCycling  6 років тому

      Yeh that's really interesting. But I will say the pros know every little detail about the body and the physiology, us Hubbards do need reference points whether it be power or the like.
