      Can? It's going to happen. You know he's not going to be thinking of anything else until that 20 minute itch is scratched... In under 20 minutes. Though will it be like the 5 vs 1? Are we going to have 4 videos or just 1?

    Well done, Si. Cracking effort!
    Hearing Ollie go through the numbers was interesting. I managed 19:51 as a junior in 1993. It was a TT bike but I do wonder about the drag coefficient. My skinsuit would have been baggy by today's standards.
    So it leaves me wondering what my FTP was way back then!?

      @Bikejon 2 роки тому +10

      @@taranhase4396 Oh we weren't as fast as that back then. The "juvenile" (under 16) national record back then was....well actually it was set the same day I did my 19:51...20:13 (Ceri Pritchard*). The first sub 20 min ride by a junior was only the year before me (Richard Montgomery 19:59 in 1992, bettered by Chris Ball (19:48) and then Zak Carr (19:37) in the same year IIRC). I was the 4th junior rider to ever manage the feat AFAIK 😁Just little idea of what power I was putting out, as we didn't have such things. But the effort ought to have been good, as I won 2 national junior TT titles in 1993! *Ceri actually beat his own juvenile record in early 1994 with a 19:59.
      Weird how I can remember all these things, yet more recent things have gone from my mind completely.

    The extra rolling resistance of the wet roads absolutely cost Si an under 20 minute time. In the end, nature is going to get her way. Si got beaten by physics. There is no shame in that. Well done!

      Or maybe some extra rolling resistance from using sponsor tires and not Corsa Speed G+ 2.0. Even using overshoes would help here, not to mention a disc wheel.

    The sport's hardware has improved so much. Back in the days when everyone rode aluminum rims with 32 stainless steel spokes, even the "elites" could not ride 30 MPH time trials. The only exception was downwind/downhill courses.

      @@louismorel2001 No. The fact that you cite Merckx's hour record proves my point better than anything I could say. The greatest cyclist of all time made a superhuman effort (that many including Merckx himself say shortened his career) to ride barely 30 MPH. And to do it he had to ride on a perfectly smooth track, with specialized (for the time) equipment, and at high altitude to boot.

    Really nice video! If you raise your head 1 cm above the body, and the head is around 15 cm across, and a sphere (head) has a Cd = 0.5, and rho = 1.2 kg/m^3, then that's +1 watt @ 30 mph, so the penalty is around 1 watt / cm. I think the helmet vents did you in, though :).

    Shaved legs is surprising. According to Specialized in their wind tunnel, shaving legs saved almost 1 and 1/2 minute over 40 km. I wouldn't have guessed it would be that much. Granted, it is at speeds I probably cannot maintain for 40 km. Anyway, you did a great job. You were faster than people on dedicated TT bikes.

    I love how you Brits use miles because although we Americans get slammed for not using the "Metric System'", the fact is that "mile" is one syllable and "Ki - Lo - Me - Ter" is 4 syllables. Try another - Cen - Ti - Me - Ter or Inch. Try more, quart, pint, foot, ounce.... And how often do you convert Centimeters to Meters - the GREAT feature of metric system - NEVER, LOL! I'm glad you Brits hold on to the one syllable past! Great Video!

    Thank you Gloucestershire cycling network for ever entertaining formidable content, well done lightning Si,
    Imperial is what it sounds like, it’s making people ride on the wrong side of the road with wrong side shifters, not adhering to metrics, side conventions as an attempt to close an empire and colonies to open market standards and ease of circulation.
    We like and appreciate all regional singularity form Gloucestershire and imperial Britania, Banksy, dan’s hair defiying the years, bromptons, keep up with great content and global ambitions regardless of the side of the road you ride on, could you please provide the rest of the non comonwealth parts of the globe imperial to metric subtitles in similar tittles ?
    Best witty regards
