  • Matt Bottrill is a bit of a guru when it comes to time trialling and just cycling fast. We're going talk about optimising speed, power, aerodynamics and pacing to make you faster on the bike!

    Matt seriously knows his stuff when it comes to time trialling, aerodynamics, and just going fast. He has coached Tim Don to the current Ironman record, Lucy Charles, Will Clarke, Susie Cheetham, and Rachel Joyce. Matt’s own accolades include a 10mile TT PB of 17"40 and he was the UK TT champion for the 10, 25, 50 and 100mile. And, just a couple of years ago he decided to give triathlon a go!
    The body is 80% of your drag while you're riding, or while you're racing, so, the better aero position you can get in, as well as optimising power efficiency, then you are going to save some serious time. In 2014, Matt learnt a lot about aerodynamics losing 20 watts in power, but gaining 40 watts in aerodynamics resulting in massive improvements.
    As shown, cycling fast is about much more than having strong legs. It involves looking at every element that's gonna make you go fast. The position on the bike, the training, you're just breaking everything down, trying to find all those one percents.

      First, I'm blown away by Matt's reason for using the big chainring. I can't believe that I never thought of that, myself!!! And it's got me rethinking my gearing. I'm going to be experimenting with oval chainrings soon and I think I'll include a larger one as well to see how much difference it makes in my speed vs power when I keep my chainline centered on the cassette due to the bigger chainring up front.
      Second, I'm surprised how much difference an optimized skinsuit makes over a standard one. 25-30 watts is huge! I'd like to take advantage of that insight but I fear the cost will prevent it because, as I understand it, a custom high-end skinsuit that is properly fit to my physique would be very expensive.
      There was a lot of great information in this video. Please bring Matt back for future videos. One topic that I'd like to return to is the aero clothing / skinsuit issue. What I'd like to know is: What can an athlete on a limited budget do to approach the aerodynamics of a custom high-end skinsuit? Are there any off-the-shelf workarounds to making your clothing more slippery without a big budget?

      Excellent information, thank you for this!
      I would echo what D.Eldon said below regarding the centering of the chain line, and skin suits. I'd also be interested in knowing the difference between a full aero skin suit, vs. shorts & top with shaved legs and arms (to save money).

    I did a tri years ago during my second season where I came out of T1 into cycle leg which started with an immediate 10k climb. I didn't think much about pacing as cycling was my strongest discipline and I figured I could push hard uphill and gain a lead. But I ended up vomiting all over myself after pushing too hard in the initial 5k. Not only was it a total embarrassment but I dropped from 5th place to 15th while spewing stomach acid all over the tarmac and trying to regain my composure. I appreciate GTN bringing on wizards like Matt whose pointers really make a difference to elite athletes and newcomers alike. If I had such direction back then it may have ended in a podium finish. Keep up the good work guys!

    I'm confused by the headwind / tailwind comment. Surely when riding into a head wind the effective wind speed is greater and therefore aerodynamics plays a more significant role. With a tail wind the effective wind speed is less so aerodynamics is less important. Matt said exactly the opposite - please can you expand on the logic?

    • @janstelzner6501
      @janstelzner6501 6 років тому

      I think, you're right! The way he recommended that one in the video made physically absolutely no sense!

    • @markthrelfall3577
      @markthrelfall3577 6 років тому +12

      Glen Mitchell yeah, I think what Matt was trying to get at is that a lot of people relax with a tailwind. In fact it’s your opportunity to gain a lot of speed and momentum. So aerodynamics is still really important to get that speed, even if the wind is mostly coming from behind. Basically...just be super aero all the time 😛

    • @mindciller
      @mindciller 6 років тому

      That's a good point. I do notice if I kick hard with a tail wind once up at the higher speed it is easier to stay there so if I was more aero there too it would allow even more speed to be obtained

    • @Mike.A.
      @Mike.A. 6 років тому

      I've also intuitively believed that in a headwind it's more important to be as aero as possible, and increase effort just enough to maintain the same power, and with a tailwind aero was less important as presenting a larger surface area of your body may actually help push you. With that said I trust Matt's experience and expertise to support his theory. Aerodynamics come more into play at higher speeds, so perhaps that's the reason that aero takes on greater significance when riding with a tailwind.

    Please more info about pacing in headwind, tailwind and uphill. There are some different informations about it and sometimes it is AGAINST logic. I understand it that when you go slower due wind or gradient you should go over your planned pace and if you go faster due tailwind/downhill you can push little less and finally both together leads to BEST overall time???

      adrian betti actually it should be the opposite. You should almost relax into it, rather than force it. Try dropping down through your shoulder blades. It does take practice...possibly some flexibility

    • @philpaterson5936
      @philpaterson5936 6 років тому +4

      It takes time to adapt to the position so it comes down to flexibility and time. Also weigh up extra shoulder mass from triathletes swimming... Matt's not exactly got a massive set of boulders getting in the way lol. Another consideration is your helmet and glasses choice... aero lids with built in visors allow you to tilt your head down more for greater comfort
