I bought my 04 Boxster S 7 years ago for my 60th birthday. I paid £7,500 for it. I have never had anew car & this is the closest I will ever come . It puts a massive smile every time I go for a spin. It sticks to the road like glue. 👍👍

I acquired an '03 Boxster 2 years ago...my wife insisted on it! It is the only car I have owned where I usually turn off the radio while driving just so I can enjoy the sound the engine makes and relish the driving experience. Most agile vehicle I have ever driven. The fact that people invariably express how pretty it is when in a parking lot is simply a big bonus.

I fully agree! I had a 2.7 from new 2000 till 2003, sold it and about 10 years later somebody I know happened to buy it. 22 years old now (but well kept) and he is still very happy with it.

    1) I bought a 2001 986 with 120K miles on it. Drove it to 180K with no issues other than normal maintenance.
    2) Traded the 986 in for a 2006 987 with 25K miles. Driving that currently with 75K miles. Reliability is perfect.
These are a car for drivers. If you like to put the top down, drive for several hours at 5000+ rpm with the sun caressing you as the road opens up and curves and the miles pass by like liquid gold, this is your car. Three to four times a year I truly drive covering 400-500 miles in a day in the Eastern Sierra's and into Mt. Lassen and Shasta in California. Epic. Cost is an oil change and gas.

As somebody who just got finished doing a restoration on a 2003 Boxster I can tell you it’s all about choosing the right car, I bought mine from a wildly dangerous part of town from a sketchy old man in but not working at an auto shop for about 4k I repainted it after pulling a 3 foot dent out of the door, and the entire quarter panel which had been hit once all the body work was finished that’s when the real fun started, I began loosing coolant every time I drove it to the point that I had two gallons ready to go at all times in the trunk, it wasn’t a leak or a crack it was the conjoined weakness of an old old system, I did the thermostat, thermostat housing, water pump, coolant temp sensor, oil temp sensor, the coolant hosing, the radiator on the right burst one morning so I replaced that then the left burst after a few weeks, the stronger I made the rest of the system the more the old parts would break, I finally came to the coolant tank and let me tell you that job was a bitch it took me and a friend who runs an auto shop 3 days and many many bleeding fingers, firstly you can’t see what your doing so you have to lay across the back of the car and work by touch only in a space no larger than an apartment mailbox trying to squeeze hose clamps that are so old that they still say MADE IN WEST GERMANY finally after that I got it running right I reclear coated the headlights, resparayed all the trim black, and painted the calipers 993 Arena Red and somehow managed to convince a guy to give me 12k for it at 124k miles so all in all they are good cars and a lot of fun but they can be a bitch to get right if you don’t do everything yourself

Hey Joel, cool review. I’m from Ukraine and I’m looking forward to have war won. One of the reasons - to be able to go abroad and buy one of Boxers for fun. Cool car, affordable price, potentially appreciate in future when people forget what was the manual gearbox. Maybe earlier. Anyway, I just want to say thank you for a great car review and Ukrainian flag on the background of your channel logo. Appreciate your support. Cheers

These cars are as a result of a masterpiece. You can create a modern car with all the bells and whistles and what not, and it will be just another modern day vehicle. The flow lines on the design of these cars really reminds you of a beautiful painting. And you don't have to drive them fast to be noticed ;). Classy and elegant with sophistication is what I describe this car.

Nice vid Joel. I've been test-driving used cars lately, including a 2000 911 with Tiptronic, a Mercedes SLK AMG 55, and an '03 Boxster S with the 6-speed manual. Only the Boxster S made me grin from ear to ear, and the way it sings in 2nd and 3rd gears with the top down is a joy to behold. I've also driven base Boxster with 5-speeds and Tiptronics - they just can't hold a candle.

About a month ago I purchased a close replica of this car. A 2003 Facelift Boxster-S 3.2 Manual in Silver with a long list of extras and at only 60k miles with 3 previous owners. Mine has black leather without the Crest in the seat headrests, i'm a bit jealous of your Blue leather with the crests! I paid £8,300 with a matching hard-top. Shows that these have started to creep up. I honestly think you can't do better for the money.

I bought a 6spd 986.2S in 2019 and love it. It is the slowest of my 3 vehicles (modded 11 second Audi C7A6 and a '67 Camaro with a 502ci BB) but the Boxster is the most engaging to drive. Also, while I've never been a convertible guy, there is something to be said for top-down driving pleasure on a nice day. Driving dynamics are really great with this car. Much more control when approaching the limits versus some other mid-engine cars I've driven.
I bought this thing when market values were probably at their all time low so I'm sitting pretty. Despite me enjoying it as intended, I continue to watch the value increase with each passing year.

I've had a 1999 Boxster base 5 speed manual for the last 6 months. It's absolutely perfect. Why you would pay 4x the price for a 1990's 911 when the Boxster exists? It's the exact same car and is better in a lot of ways. Yea, its not that fast but I dont drive very fast. It handles better than the 911 because of the mid engine setup. Plus it's a drop top convertible!

Well I note your point around the Porsche being/ feeling special over the Z4, I owned the e86 3.0 Si for 3 years and followed you(so to speak) as I now own a Porsche Cayman 987.2 base 2.9. I still have to applaud the BMW Z4 stra8 six 3.0 engine as one of the the best performance NA engines. The Cayman will wee all over the BMW Z On a twisty road but in a straight line, it may leave the Cayman by a bee’s dick margin. The handling of the Cayman is mental on my favourite road, whilst in the Z4 I will break to enter bends you don’t need to adjust your speed in the Cayman due to its poise and agility.
The Z4 has slightly more torque and slightly more responsive to throttle input but the two car are similar on power with the Porsche more modern and mature to drive. The e86 Z4 is absolutely a drivers car, the engine encourages you to go faster in sports mode and revs keenly with a smooth creamy straight six sound. You seat on the rear axles in the Z4 making it more keen to impress in a youthful manner. The Cayman is alright to cruise at a steady pace and respond to throttle input when provoked by emitting a gruff loud iconic flat six sound that Porsche are known for and its a special occasion when you start up the engine from cold 🥶
The two cars are very good in their own ways and also special to own, Boxster/ Cayman and e86/e85 will both hit classic status as the best within their segment albeit Porsche being ahead due stronger heritage. Thanks Joel for sharing.

Can confirm all of these. I have a 2006 Boxster S 6spd and although it is a newer gen it's pretty much the same car underneath. The interior has aged better perhaps, although you WILL need to throw out the original stock stereo head unit (for no other reason than the rubber buttons literally turn to sticky goo). Around 3000 pounds and 280ps with a close ratio gear box this car does scoot and is planted at any speed or curve. With the top down it is about 80-90% of the experience of riding a motorcycle and is significantly safer. Nearly every time I finish a short drive with it I get out thinking "damn this is an amazing car". We purchased with 72k miles on the clock and "Great" condition for $15k USD. It has PASM and the 19" Carrera wheels too :)

@oliverkalamata2753 It was a standard factory bearing that came out and a new standard factory bearing went in. 200,000kms and no sign of wear.
I've owned the car from new and looked after it properly.
Oil & filter changed as per kms/time schedule. I drive gently until properly warm & I use it regularly. I love to give it a proper rev once warm .

987 Boxster S with tiptronic , a Very reliable car but have some insurance. If they go wrong , parts are very $$$. Replaced an instrument binnacle and was $3000 without that insurance. Get an S model, intake (air) mods and exhaust mods recommended.
    Sold mine, still kicking myself.

Hey Joel... I'm a 2004 996 911 owner and I have ZERO hate on Boxsters. It's a different experience (mid- vs rear-engine). Curious of your take on both... pros and cons. In my mind, we're all one Porsche family!!!

    • @r.b8129
      @r.b8129 2 роки тому

I think because the 911 has the engine in the rear it is harder to drive fast. I've got an Focus ST170 and I drive that on the very edge because the engine is where it should be.
