I loved this video. I purchased a new Boxster when I retired in 2008. It now has 70K on it. I take great pleasure in washing, polishing and maintaining it. You described the experience of owning this vehicle beautifully. I like when things work correctly. This vehicle is crisp and tight and goes precisely where you point it. I have had zero problems with it. My wife and I are in our early 70s and cannot bring ourselves to think about selling it. I come from humble beginnings and sometimes I wake in the middle of the night with a smile, when I think about the fact that I have a Porsche in the garage. Great job on the video. I am writing from northwest Ohio in the US.
Absolutely completely agree with you Joel its bloody criminal the state of British roads considering the amount of tax we motorist pay. It certainly goes a long way to spoilling the driving experience for us petrol heads.

I like the triptronic S transmission it allows you to keep two hands on the steering wheel at all times which is under rated if you are someone who appreciates the boxsters almost perfect weight distribution&handling
I had a Boxster. I found that every time I walked to it it was an event, the feeling I was getting into a Porsche made me feel good. I had it as my only car for about three years, and used it as my only car and did another 50k miles in all conditions. While my new car, a M240i is quicker, it’s not quite the same. I didn’t find the suspension too hard, maybe I’m just used to stiffly set up cars… Ps did anybody else think he was getting rear ended by the wagon at 14.35?
My take: I got a nice 987.2 Boxster S manual, bought it for EUR 40k. First problem, it's not a 911, Porsche community is exclusive and doesn't take you seriously (even though I could have gotten a 996 or 997.1 for the price). Second problem, other drivers hate seeing a young guy in a Porsche (even though it's an old car and not really that expensive), they don't give me the right of way etc., this never happens in my Skoda. Other than that, driving expericence is damn near perfect!
I wasn’t happy with my Boxster because of the banging and suspension on damaged roads. I had the same 18 inch Carrera wheels but swapped to 16 inch factory wheels and what a massive and significant difference it made to comfort and ride quality.
Very enjoyable video. Excellent description of the true feelings of the 986 owner at the wheel. Good point about road quality that are deteriorating all over Europe (France, my country, included). But the joy of driving is still there. Thanks again for the video.
Great series Joel! I have almost the same car (year, model, colour) and have been watching this series with much interest (bought my 986 S in Aug and had it serviced and fettled at ePorsch in Sep last year). Can't wait to see you hoon it in Europe on smooth wide roads: where I live in the Surrey hills I feel every pothole so totally agree on the steering feedback sentiment (my other car is an equally old 530i autobahn cruiser). Keep up the good work and I sympathize with the previous content, stay grounded and take all of these comments as huge support!
I own a 2003 2.7, and a friend has a 2001 3.2s. The s models suspension is much firmer as standard and i feel the 2.7 is a better daily car for this reason
Hi Joel, you have summed the Boxster up in the same way I think of my own 987 2.7. It is such a event to drive, and makes any journey so special. Keep up the good work my friend.
I have to agree. Driving my 2.7 around Bedfordshire is not that great. Just drove the A470 through mid Wales last weekend. 100 miles of stunning country road in very good condition which prompted me to comment.
I bought a 986 Boxster S about 6 months ago and it’s the best car I’ve owned. I was lucky to purchase someone’s no expense spared passion project so it’s currently running just shy of 300bhp, fully rebuilt by neinmeister, forged 3 piece oz superleggeras, LSD, full 996 GT3 front brake conversion, rear 996 turbo brake conversion, KW V3 stainless coileovers etc etc. I’m pretty sure it’s the highest modified example in the UK. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever sell it.
I sold my Boxster S after four+ years of ownership to buy a 911. Bought the 911 so I can fit my bike in the back for trips to Italy. Really wish I’d kept the 986, much more fun, sounds great (particularly with 200 cel cats), a v underrated car. Put 17” wheels on, it’ll make such a difference, fine in the Surrey Hills where I drive, cycle. Good guys at Eporsch / Dean at LaRose too 👍🏼

Good video. I bought a 987 2.7 manual Boxster last year from E-Porsch to join the 997 Gen 2 Carrera 4S manual I've owned for over 8 years. The 911 is a wonderful car but there is a directness about being in the Boxster which you don't get in the 911. The 911 remains the garage queen but I have no problem in booting the Boxster around the country lanes especially as a 2.7 245hp spec means you can have fun at sensible speeds.
I had said in your post asking about content that an epic trip would be the Porsche with a luggage rack, skis on and a trip to the alps. There’s something cool about seeing unlikely cars doing great things.
Been subscribed for a bit, watched a few vids from yourself and others and am definitely getting a 986S, soon as I sell the beach property and settled into my new home. Currently have an 12 MDX, 01 Prelude SH & an 05 350SLK Launch Edition ( AMG everything except the motor ), only 1000 made. This has been my favorite car out of several C5 Corvettes, an Audi S4 v8 Quattro, two 350z's, Saab 9-3 Aero V6 Turbo ( what a sleeper ) and a few Hondas/Mitsus. With all that being said watching all these videos reminds me of a 986S I test drove and loved but the ex wife absolutely hated about 6 years ago. Hi Joel, I have to disagree, if you leave the autobahns and main roads here in Germany and take to the country roads, they are not much better. The way the Germans fix them is to lower the speed limit and put up a warning sign that the road surface is bad!
I own a xc90 and a 2001 986. My Volvo is like a polished tank so I pray for green lights. In my 986 I love red lights to enjoy the take off and going through the gears 😊
I agree with you on the state of the roads here in the uk, the ones around where I live are horrific, it the main reason I’ve stopped driving firm sporty cars and drive my Range Rover everywhere, love the videos keep up the good work 😃
Great video! New shocks will help a ton. My (new to me) 987 is coming soon, and with 140,000+ miles, I think I might have to do my shocks when it arrives.
Glad it was just the roads you didn’t like. I bought my 986 last summer. Full black Batmobile version. Absolutely love it and I actually like the feel of the road. It’s like flying a Spitfire rather than an Airbus! Corners like Scalextric on magnets and the acceleration is ace. ( once you get out of London) Nice video 📼✔️
Nice to see the sun shining on you Joel, and what better way to enjoy it then in the Porsche 😀😀 Be thankful you still have hair 😃😃😃 Love seeing your Porsche, so glad your getting the suspension done.
I bought an SLK 08 plate for £3500 recently, had somewiring issues in the boot and roof fault they didn't want to fix that I sorted for nothing more than a bit of solder, electrical tape and an afternoon. Love it completely able to put roof down, insurance was £112 to add it for the remainder of the year and great car and it's on cap for around £5k so I can enjoy it until summer or just after and sell it for a profit... win win oh and heated seats and airscarf 🤙
The answer to your ride quality is 17s and standard suspension. Mine is nothing like you describe with this setup, the ride is almost magic carpet like for a sports car and you can really attack the crappy roads up here in the North East.
People would enjoy their Boxter S's a whole lot more if they would drive them on the right side of the road like in the USA. (JJOC) I had installed Procharger superchargers on all three and that really made these cars a whole lot more fun. I've had three of Boxter S....each one was just a whole bunch of fun. Two were destroyed by hitting deer and the third was stolen and never found.
Hi Steve. Perhaps if you’d driven on the right side of the road like in the UK ( juvenile justice oversight commission?) Two deer may still be alive and no one would have stolen your Boxter as the steering wheel would have been on the correct side and thus confused the thieves 😇
I agree completely. I own basically the same specced car but in blue, and although I’ve just done a complete suspension overhaul and replaced all the major suspension components, it has only exacerbated the poor road conditions. On the whole though, when you find some smooth tarmac, it’s a real gem.
Have spent a lot of time in Buckinghamshire over the years - I think you have always had some of the worst road surfaces in the UK and that's from someone living in Norfolk. Happy New Year and all the best for 2022
I unsubscribed because I thought you had abandoned the Boxster. I am pleased to say, I have re-subscribed now. Took mine out today after several weeks and had a flat tyre but I still love it. Oh, coming from the future as I am, I am pleased to tell you that your Boxster passed its MOT test with flying colours!
Thanks for the video what a fantastic car! Could you let us know the roads you were on? Just a small point - it would be nice to see your cars when they have been washed! Overall very enjoyable - thanks!
I have a manual 986 S with fully rebuilt suspension, running Koni SA dampers, Eibach 2-way adjustable ARBs and Michelin Pilot Sports on 18" wheels. Some of the imperfections on the roads do take a bit of the enjoyment out of the car, even after all the work done to it. A lot of owners have switched to 17" wheels as apparently it's the bigger wheels that ruin the ride. I would be looking to buy a spare set of 17"s if I had somewhere to store them. Perhaps you can do a back-to-back comparison in a future video?
Regarding the state of British roads against French roads and how much tax we pay I would say this. The last time I drove through France to get into Spain I paid €176 on the toll roads. Now considering my road tax in Britain is £155 for a whole year it puts the tax I pay into perspective. I nearly paid a whole year's road tax in one day in France.
I think given the car it would only make sense for you to visit the Porsche museum in Stuttgart if you are able to Joel! It looks sensational. I wish to go some day
In terms of quality of the road itself, I’d say the best place in Europe is Spain. You can find some mind blowing scenery there in a very good asphalt.
Great videography... love seeing the Boxster in the mud... makes the car real and not just beauty queen. Agree with your sentiment on driving my other cars versus my Cayman S. The Cayman is special to drive, especially on smooth open roads. The others cars endure the mundane errands more easily.
That’s out near Aylesbury had a few burn ups out that way , I like the 418 Aylesbury to Buckingham, hopefully I will have my 987 back on road in spring you should organise a boxster drive out meet up and all go caffeine and machine , I’m sure theres loads of enthusiasts that would meet up … if you have the space that’s a car you should hang onto a weekend fun toy …. Another great production keep up the good work 👍
Agreed, I have a 996, similar suspension, and yes its absolutely battering to drive on the awful UK roads,. Replaced the springs and shocks and its a little better. Does put me off driving it too. I end up with a headache around town, its ok on sweeping A roads best .
There’s the argument for a newer model, 981, 718s.. with small wheels and good rubber, you can enjoy the engine and speed with relative comfort not giving up too much nimbleness if at all (you’ll notice mechanical steering changes to electric but all in all as you say, for roads like you have… worth considering )
Great video mate :-) I have a 987.1 S and feel exactly the same about driving round town and on rough roads. At times I feel like I want shot of it, but as I have four other cars, I use one of them. May take it out, roof down tomorrow as it's going to be a sunny day.
I'd recommend the Riedbergpaß from Obermaiselstein to Balderschwang in Bavaria for your Porsche blast on a mountain road. Great channel. Cheers Joel 👍🏻
Hi Joel, I have a 987 and feel exactly the same way about the suspension and british roads. I need a refresh as well and have been looking into the Koni Sport Active struts (fsd) with the H&R M030 springs as mine is just a little too high for my liking to try and soften the pot holes but keep the sporty feel. Maybe take a look online at what people have said as all the others will make things stiffer for track use. If I get them done before you I will let you know how I got on. I also had an LSD fitted and can highly recommend for proper feel and also to be a bit silly comming out of junctions at slow speeds when it’s a bit greasy/damp 😉
Take it around sweeten, Denmark, Finland ect, I promise you the roads are amazing, the views are incredible, its the best places to drive a car, you won't regret it
I planning a boxster for my next car I'm thinking of a 987 2.7 as seems to be the balance between performance and reliability hopefully I'm on the right track thinking this way
i had the misfortune of buying a previously neglected boxster that ended up needing a transmission rebuilt 9 days into ownership... though i had to get rid of it, those 9 days were enough to make it my favourite car i’ve ever owned... really hope to get a new one once the used car market calms down
Yes I agree, but I love my 2004 Boxster S I live in wales near the Brecon Beacons so I’ve got those roads to drive on, but driving in to town is a nightmare. Great vid,
have the same color with silver inteior, but automatic, and 2.7 -228 cv i found you have that Bose speaker in the rear seats, thats an option of the car that days or you purchased it after? im insterested in purchase one.
I live in South Africa - roads are atrocious - thats why I drive a G29 with M adaptive suspension. I set the sport mode with the suspension on comfort and everything else in sport setting to not shatter my spine or an alloy 😑 Absolutely breaks my heart not to be able to enjoy it fully due to the horrible negligence of our useless government not using our tax money to keep the life lines of the country in good condition. Love the channel and appreciate the content! Take care and God bless! Lots of love from sunny South Africa 🇿🇦
I think the Boxster has been around for 25 years now and even Porsche are granting it classic status. Not sure exactly what that means, I think they are re-manufacturing some parts and believe there might even be a bit of a discount. Hopefully they will soon do what all Porsches do eventually and start climb in value in recognition of the great cars they are. There are two ways you can go about buying one , spend, probably too much, as I did, assuming it is tiptop, or go cheap and accept you will probably have to spend a bit on sorting it out. In my case I did the former and will still end up having to refresh the front suspension and lots of other bits. If I was doing it again I would definitely shop around more and have whatever one you think you want inspected, even if you are buying from a self proclaimed specialist.
There is no better driving experience, what other open-top driving experience could you have from one of the worlds best-engineered cars at a sub £10K price? I have never regretted buying my 2002 Boxster S, and it has been steadily accruing in value over the years. How many other cars will do a better overall job? It is a classic, mechanical driving device, driven by the owner, not a fridge on wheels covered in and driven by electronics. Great video, I know that "Porsche laugh" well. Very good and heartfelt.
Hi Joel , I’m building a little group of people to do a nice trip from Uk to Spain going through some beautiful roads through France , Andorra , and Spain , finishing in Madrid ,staying in Madrid for a couple of days and then back . Let me know if you want to come over , we are open to make new friends and enjoy this beautiful car lovers family , same for all your subscribers. All the best .
I know the feeling, I grew up in NY. The potholes that were there at 21 years old are STILL there at...49. Our taxes are insanity too. Love to know where that money goes. Not infrastructure, that's for sure..
14:24 having owned both I disagree the 911 996 is a different beast and the rear engine 2 wheel drive is the ultimate drivers car 💯 the 986 is incredible tho but I would be a liar to say I've not upgraded with a 996 and have more fun going round corners sideways its actually safer in a rear engine car imo! Nice review tho 👍
I've travelled the world and there are many third world countries with roads better than ours. Absolutely shameful. They can afford umpteen grillion quid for the HS2, which few will use, even if they can afford it. All frills and no knickers, as my gran used to say.
My 2003 Boxster S suffered IMS failure with 98,000 km on the clock. Not a problem if you only paid what you did. A second hand motor is GBP2,500 if you can find one, then GBP2,000 to get a proper IMS bearing and another GBP2,000 in labour. All that if you are really lucky. In other words, I don't agree with your mechanics assessment of if it ain't broke, don't fix it
You shouldn't lower the roof below 8 degrees celsius, as apparently the plastic rear window can crack. I'm guessing if this was filmed in early January that it was below 8oC.

The answer to your ride quality is 17s and standard suspension. Mine is nothing like you describe with this setup, the ride is almost magic carpet like for a sports car and you can really attack the crappy roads up here in the North East.
I need to know what seats you have in that car are called and where I can buy them
People would enjoy their Boxter S's a whole lot more if they would drive them on the right side of the road like in the USA. (JJOC)
I had installed Procharger superchargers on all three and that really made these cars a whole lot more fun.
I've had three of Boxter S....each one was just a whole bunch of fun. Two were destroyed by hitting deer and the third was stolen and never found.
Hi Steve. Perhaps if you’d driven on the right side of the road like in the UK ( juvenile justice oversight commission?)
Two deer may still be alive and no one would have stolen your Boxter as the steering wheel would have been on the correct side and thus confused the thieves 😇
Hello mate, bought one as well and so far really happy! What are the size of these lovely wheels??
I agree completely. I own basically the same specced car but in blue, and although I’ve just done a complete suspension overhaul and replaced all the major suspension components, it has only exacerbated the poor road conditions. On the whole though, when you find some smooth tarmac, it’s a real gem.
What video editing program do you recommend? If you don’t mind me asking. Thanks, Don
I thought you were going to say the weather! Glad you’re feeling back on form Joel and happy 2022.
First time I've commented, Love your videos! Roads in the UK are horrendous- If only we had perfect tarmac everywhere
Thanks for the video what a fantastic car! Could you let us know the roads you were on? Just a small point - it would be nice to see your cars when they have been washed! Overall very enjoyable - thanks!
Hi Joel, happy new year mate!
Let's get the channel to 100k this year.
Great video Joel and spot on about the terrible Blighty roads for driving sports suspension cars
Can this be a daily driver with very low maintenance?
My 986 S comes out of winter storage on Easter Sunday...then it's go time baby!
Totally agree mate! I love my silver 986 and where I live is difficult I must say compared to Deutchland for sure!
Regarding the state of British roads against French roads and how much tax we pay I would say this.
The last time I drove through France to get into Spain I paid €176 on the toll roads. Now considering my road tax in Britain is £155 for a whole year it puts the tax I pay into perspective. I nearly paid a whole year's road tax in one day in France.
could it be it rides hard due to the 6'' of dirt on the floor?
Thank you for showing me the roads and crap weather at home in the uk , you just reminded me why I left lol .
Not going to lie I actually prefer the sound of the 2.5 over the 2.7 or 3.2! That 2.5L Porsche flat 6 sings an amazing sound as it revs to its MAX
I always have mine with the roof down! No matter how cold! Obviously if it’s raining strongly it’s up, but even with drizzle it’s dow.😀👍🏼😀
Genuinely feared for your life at 14:30 when he came barrelling up behind you 😂
Great video mate :-) I have a 987.1 S and feel exactly the same about driving round town and on rough roads. At times I feel like I want shot of it, but as I have four other cars, I use one of them. May take it out, roof down tomorrow as it's going to be a sunny day.
Keep up good work. looking forward to future uploads
Ok
On a slightly unrelated note to the video, where did you get that jacket/coat? it's really cool
Don't know if youve ever driven one but you need an hour or two in an Elise. Boxster will feel huge afterwards! Good luck with everything in 2022!
Is the ride a lot firmer than your z4?
Great video Joel and hope you are doing well. Best wishes!
I'd recommend the Riedbergpaß from Obermaiselstein to Balderschwang in Bavaria for your Porsche blast on a mountain road.
Great channel. Cheers Joel 👍🏻
Mentmore and Wing looking good in the (rare) winter sunshine.
Glad someone else noticed
Hi Joel, I have a 987 and feel exactly the same way about the suspension and british roads. I need a refresh as well and have been looking into the Koni Sport Active struts (fsd) with the H&R M030 springs as mine is just a little too high for my liking to try and soften the pot holes but keep the sporty feel. Maybe take a look online at what people have said as all the others will make things stiffer for track use. If I get them done before you I will let you know how I got on. I also had an LSD fitted and can highly recommend for proper feel and also to be a bit silly comming out of junctions at slow speeds when it’s a bit greasy/damp 😉
i dont know too much about cars, but does anyone know if its possible to install a sound system in this car?
Joel,... the Boxster S or the Z4 3.0?
Absolutely agree that the Boxster/Caymans are the superior car to the 911. And your 2003 S is faster than a standard 911 only a few years older
Spot on review. Living in the Wiltshire countryside, it’s lovely. Anywhere near a City… nuh uh
Take it around sweeten, Denmark, Finland ect, I promise you the roads are amazing, the views are incredible, its the best places to drive a car, you won't regret it
I planning a boxster for my next car I'm thinking of a 987 2.7 as seems to be the balance between performance and reliability hopefully I'm on the right track thinking this way
i had the misfortune of buying a previously neglected boxster that ended up needing a transmission rebuilt 9 days into ownership... though i had to get rid of it, those 9 days were enough to make it my favourite car i’ve ever owned... really hope to get a new one once the used car market calms down
When do you think the used market will settle?
Yes I agree, but I love my 2004 Boxster S I live in wales near the Brecon Beacons so I’ve got those roads to drive on, but driving in to town is a nightmare. Great vid,
I am never going to sell my Z4, but you make me want to find some money for a Boxster :-)
So what’s happening with that Carnewal exhaust?
Happy New Year Joel.
have the same color with silver inteior, but automatic, and 2.7 -228 cv i found you have that Bose speaker in the rear seats, thats an option of the car that days or you purchased it after? im insterested in purchase one.
It's was an original option if you got the full Bose audio pack. But you can retrofit them to all 986 Boxsters, part number:98664556601. Around £650.
Is Germany( the land of Porsche) a better place to buy one? (Excluding RHD vs LHD )
Me, too! Our roads are pretty awful. I love my Z4, but its hard suspension makes for a bumpy ride on many of our highways..
Have you sold your Z4 then?
Hi Joel ,
I’m building a little group of people to do a nice trip from Uk to Spain going through some beautiful roads through France , Andorra , and Spain , finishing in Madrid ,staying in Madrid for a couple of days and then back .
Trip will be for a week or so , I will love you to come , I own a Boxster S and can’t wait to do this trip.
Let me know if you want to come over , we are open to make new friends and enjoy this beautiful car lovers family , same for all your subscribers.
All the best .
best soft top cleaner?
May be true, but as mine is 2003 I have the glass rear windscreen
@@itsjoel The plastic ball joints can break apart too. They are cheap to replace, though.
They’re only going up in price in this climate so you got on board at the right time!
Highlight of the day for sure
Thanks for another great one Joel, makes me want to get a Boxster!!!
