  • HuntFlorida TV host Tony Young goes over major deer hunting changes with the addition of 10 new Deer Management Units (DMUs). Florida has a total of 12 DMUs, eight of which now require legal to take bucks to have at least 3 antler points on a side or have a main beam length of at least 10 inches. The remaining four DMUs now require bucks to have at least 2 points on a side to be legal to take. Tony shows examples of what is now legal to take in each unit, talks about Zone B's boundary line getting modified, the reduction of doe harvest in Zone A and the youth exemption to these new antler regulations.

      HuntFlorida TV So...in Zone C, is a 10+ inch SPIKE considered legal?

    • @HuntFloridaTV
      @HuntFloridaTV  9 років тому

      alankeen62 yes, in 5 of the 6 dmus in zone c. Only in c3 is a spike not legal. There, antler has to fork to be legal.

    We never harvest a buck less than 6 points, doe's on doe days or during bow season or a cull buck. Most of the time we use the 4 points on one side rule anyhow or if he's a big wide 6. Now & again we'll allow a new hunter to take a 6. Been doing this for about 15 yrs in Hernando, Levy & Jefferson counties & have some nice older bucks. Good reg change for the WMAs tho. Let them grow up...

    Thanks for the information I personally love the new regulations but we still have a long way to go there's a lot of Rules that need to be changed and a lot of things that are being done that need to be done different by the FWC and the state.

    I have a Gold Sportsman Hunting License that includes deer permit and WMA permit. Do I need a tag to harvest a deer in the WMA's? I look trough out the FWC website and I only saw tags for antlerless in private property.
    Thank you for the lecture about legal deer to hunt, it was wonderful.

    Thanks for explaining the new rules Tony. I realize these new rules are to help increase the Older buck herds for the hunters, and is a great ideal. I would like your opinion of the Trapping rules in the state of Florida concerning taking of Coyotes, and Raccoons. We are not allowed to use steel traps (leg holds) to catch these two deer predators.These two animals attack and kill a lot of new fawns this time of the year and hurt the deer population. It would be nice to see the rules changed so to reduce the Coyotes and Raccoons. We now have the new dog proof traps available that are very effective on Raccoons, but the state will not let us use them. Do you think that these rules may be changed in the future? Thanks Tony for your time.

      Larry342516 Hi Larry,Steel traps are currently allowed with a steel trap permit. You must apply for the permit through your FWC regional office. I believe dog proof
      raccoon traps are currently in the rule change review process. I recommend following the FWC process to propose a rule
      change. You can fill out the form and state your reasons and concerns here: www.myfwc.com/contact/tell-us/improve/
      All rule change proposals are considered and reviewed by staff.

    Better check the WMA brochures they have certain regulations. I hunt in the 2 point gray side on WMA's and they have a 2 on 1 side along with atleast 1 on the other being 5" in length.

    Dear Tony, would you do a video about florida statute 790.25 open carry while hunting, camping, fishing or target shooting etc or coming to or from this activities without the need for a CCW permit? It is clear for all FWC officers the law about this matter and they are very friendly to it, but must police officers don't know about it and they give us a hard time even we are not braking the law. I never had any problem because I have not open carry when I step out of the car for Gas, Ice or anyother thing, but my understanding is that it's totally legal to open carry while you are on your way to one of this activities and get to a market or anyplace that sell Ice, tackle or anything you need for your trip as long as that place does not allow guns. Anyway, the police officers that I asked the question; if they knew about it told me, that is not true, that here in florida is ilegal to open carry in public with no exemption and good luck with that. that if they or any other officer see me, I will get arrested and that in good or bad faith they wont be liable for that. So that creats a problem for thoes hunters thatbare legaly open carrying that prefer to open carry when are on an expedition. thank you.

    I use to hunt North Florida wma, still hunting you would be lucky to see any deer. I gave up to much hassle & money for nothing. Now I need a tape measure to hunt..... Fishing has got just as bad. How about you get permit for 2B 1D deer & take them anytime & anyway. Youth rule discriminates. I've never shot a buck only does. It takes 16 minutes to tell me what I can kill.

    In late season we run into bucks with broken racks. Would a deer that has 3 points on one side with a 10" mainbean but the other side has been broken off be legal?

    • @johnbevard9962
      @johnbevard9962 9 років тому +3

      ***** He mentioned in the video that if one side is broken, you are fine, as long as you have one side qualifying.

    • @HuntFloridaTV
      @HuntFloridaTV  9 років тому

      ***** yes, it just needs one side to be legal

    Hi tony, during archery season is it legal to take a doe on a wma?

    • @HuntFloridaTV
      @HuntFloridaTV  8 років тому

      +Ross Worrell On most WMAs, yes. But each WMA has its own set of rules, so read what it says is legal to take on that area during archery.

    Are you saying the new reg mean the Deer has to be a three point total or more.?

    • @DerrickJohnsonFloridaKeys
      @DerrickJohnsonFloridaKeys 8 років тому +2

      +Barbara Kyser ; He is saying in all the zone C (except C3) and zone B, your deer has to have 3 total points on ONE SIDE. Not total, the 3 have to be on the same antler. Which in a typical antler would be a 6 point buck.

    • @HuntFloridaTV
      @HuntFloridaTV  8 років тому

      +Barbara Kyser Derrick is correct. In those 3 point DMUs, the buck just needs to have an antler with 3 or more points on it. His other antler could totally be broke off, it doesn't matter. Just needs one antler to have 3 or more points (each point measuring at least an inch long). And not to confuse you any further, but also in those 3 point DMUs, you could take a 10 inch or more spike.

    Will a cowhorn ever turn into a racked buck if he lives long enough?

    • @HuntFloridaTV
      @HuntFloridaTV  4 роки тому

      You should observe a buck's antlers for at least 2 years and then you will have a better idea of what potential it has

    How tragic that the state of Florida encourages "hunters" less than 16 years old to kill (not take, not harvest, I really hate those bullshit terms) even smaller deer.
    These look like babies!
