A lot of people in the comments section are claiming that they didn't pay rent. I have no idea where they got that information from. This is why landlords in Florida should never put utilities in their name. The landlord will lose this case and owe the tenants attorney fees and costs on top of what he will owe the tenants. It would have been cheaper in the long run to pay an attorney and do an eviction the legal way.

Having a child doesn't excuse anyone from not paying their rent. Matter of fact, a wise parent would make sure their rent/mortgage is paid so they don't end up being homeless.
Edited (due to the below comments)I understand the landlord was wrong to illegally turn off their water due to his anger about not getting paid. However, it doesn't excuse the fact that these tenants failed to pay their rent.
There's a difference between people struggling financially vs. using their earnings or govt assistance to waste on things trying to look fake rich vs. paying their rent/mortgage.
I am not condemning these people, but I've seen and heard stories of too many people avoiding paying rent when the pandemic first started, yet they can find money to buy other things.
It's sad to say this, but often times, if people don't hit rock bottom they will not learn how to be wise.

We stopped being landlords for this reason. Tenants have more rights than landlords do. And tenants know this. I had a few tenants, one destroyed the home with pets and trash. Got the place fixed up, then the next tenant stiffed us on rent payments. Trashed the doors, food stuck on cupboards and walks. Then on top of that , they allowed one of their neighbors to fill up their swimming pool with our water. We got notified by a neighbor after a day and 1/2 of the water running to the pool. Her excuse was her son plays with their kids. She would pay us for the water. Never happened. We had to have her evicted after failing to,pay rent for 4 months. And then she had the nerve to say her sister was being booted out of her place can she move into our house? We’ve had bad experiences with tenants. Now we find their are fewer and fewer places to rent and it is do to those that made it bad for others. Landlords have to pay a mortgage, and taxes. It just got to be to much.

She just knew they couldn’t evict her. Poor landlords going bankrupt. The only one who wins is the large corporations who buy the properties after the landlord finally gets the freeloaders out and then they renovate and double the rent. It's a bad situation for both parties. It's easy to see a mother with a baby and feel bad, but the landlord has a mortgage, taxes, maintenance and insurance to pay and could lose the property and their savings over this. Now he has to hire a lawyer anywhere between $700 and $2000 and wait months to get them out because they're not keeping their end of the deal, paying the rent. Renting is hard business, average return is 8%. Shame on this channel for framing the story this way. Maybe go out there and do stories on foreclosures by big banks, not a random local landlord with a crappy house.

Landlords can protect themselves with first, last months rent and security of twice the rent if they like. They can also protect themselves by doing background checks, prior eviction checks. If they did not do that, is their fault to get a bad tenant. It was wrong to cut the lights and water with a small child + is not legal.

This could also be a case of "Undocumented Landlording" - may be the reason why the "landlord" was doing an illegal eviction; getting paid in cash or with federal benefits exchange for rental space. The need to evict comes when the landlord finds a more "suitable" tenant (either known acquaintance or family member; or someone who will actually pay cash/by legal means).

It is the tenants onus to maintain a habitable apartment until normal wear and tear occurs.

Government and news channels are always on the tenants' side of the fence. However, the real victims are landlords. They are the ones exposed to rent arrears, market downturns, property damages, maintenance fees, tenant and neighbor complaints, city by-laws and restrictions placed into the rental property. Tenants can stop rent payment whenever they want but landlord will get their home foreclosed if they are behind with mortgage payment.
