This should also be terrifying to those of us that use Airbnb to rent a place to stay! Can you imagine renting an Airbnb out and then have the owner come yell at you and say who are you, I don't know you? I thought Airbnb would have verified their listings are from OWNERS only.
From the get-go I've said it was foolish to be a "landlord" or "tenant" via this service. There's quality control-no way to vet anyone-no way to protect your (owner's) property/privacy. Yes many people have had successful transactions but do you want to be one of the others-who get F*cked?

@@thomaskim5394 Air B&B’s job is to connect hosts with potential renters. It’s up to the host to do everything else including selecting who gets to rent their property. They have caused numerous issues from causing the housing market to be used as a "commodity" and consequently causing the prices of homes to skyrocket and become unaffordable for ordinary Americans, to ruining neighborhoods with transients coming and going at all times, crowding streets with cars, noise issues ...etc. etc. The original point of Airbnb was actually not a bad idea. It was supposed to bring the original _"bed and breakfast"_ concept into the 21st century, which is perfectly fine by me, and I'm sure would not have caused much mayhem. And it is scenarios like this why CA have fiscal problems: screw over the tax payer while supporting those who only financially drain the state's coffers who then, in turn, only increase pressure to tax payers.

It's a pain to have to pay and get your car back, well first they have to find a ride to get to go get their car. LOL. That's a nice way. Or you can take all the wheels off the car and then use their wheels as the block to hold their car up and throw all the lug nut all over the lawn. Technically, you didn't damage the car or steal anything but you made to difficult to use the car. No need to sue. You want games, I've got games. You just have to make living there difficult and they will choose to leave and run that scam somewhere else.
So why haven't the owners sued their original tenants for possession and cross claimed against the illegal airbnb sub tenants for rent and possession? Even with a rent moratorium, they cant violate the terms of this original leasehold--the original tenant should still be liable for damages, as well as the illegal sub tenants.
They can, however, it doesn't solve the problem of air bnb tenants not leaving. They are protected to stay without eviction due to new covid laws. It's sad.
I can't speak for California, but in Florida, there are two parallel actions, the eviction order and the suit for damages (unpaid rent, etc.) Even if you can't remove them until the moratorium is over, you can still win a judgment for damages.

The address given to us was different than the actual AirBnB location and the presumed owner of the place told me and my fiance not to mention anything about Airbnb to the leasing office or anyone when we arrived we already paid several hundred dollars for the Airbnb and it was late night hrs from home with our dog so we didnt want to cancel at that point. The place smelled strongly of weed and I felt uncomfortable staying where I wasn't allowed to stay.

Wow... what upsets me most about this is a family was displaced from their home & the bank is not even taking care of the house. The original family could’ve stayed there...
Honestly you could easily avoid this by making a solid contract with a lawyer and having the tenants qualify to live their with a quality credit score. I use 730 or higher and I never have any issues with my tenants.
This is not the only place where Airb&B is creating big problems the same situation happen in Spain and they do nothing to change it...money is all they want
In my jurisdiction, if you give notice that you or a relative are moving into the property, any lease can be terminated. Then just move in, with every teenage boy you are related to, give them full run of the house..
It’s more common than people think. Happened to me but I was the air bnb guest and no one in the house knew I was ( not did the real landlord) it was horrible!
I rented an AirBNB in Mexico City that was some kind of a converted commercial property with a jail cell like door that often jammed. It also had spotty internet. There was a club nearby that was noisy way into the morning. I left midtrip because it felt unsafe and I couldn't sleep and AirBNB wouldn't refund my money bc I didn't formally cancel. And they kept the listing up even though I told them it didn't feel safe and did not match the description. The property owner taunted me and left a terrible review about me as a a guest (which AirBNB later removed). I have never used AirBNB since.
I have a legal solution no one seems to think of: the landlord has the right to change the locks as long as they give new keys to the people squatting. So, change the locks and also provide a lease and a key to an ACTUAL tenant that will resecure the property by living in the space WITH the squatters and making them uncomfortable enough to leave. It's not illegal and solves your problem. Done. You're welcome. *Make sure they are bodyguard types. The bigger, the better.
My friend had a bad experience with AirBNB when he had a problem with a guest and they banned him from using AirBNB and lied to guests that were arriving that day that he cancelled their reservations and they would help them find another rental and give them a discount.
Yep that’s what happened in the apartment upstairs from mine. The girl was using it as an Airbnb rental. One day the ceiling in my bathroom caved in because there was a leak upstairs that nobody noticed. I could’ve been killed if I had been in there. Went upstairs to find that the people in the apartment at the time rented it through Airbnb & didn’t even realize that it was an illegal situation. That explained all the late night sounds of furniture being moved, luggage rolling around, and strangers coming in and out of the building. Anyway I think she got evicted
I’ve stayed in many Airbnb pre-covid and I’ve always had good experiences. However, I’ll be more cautious now. What a terrible experience for the home owners.
I know, right? What an easy way to get a new house. Find an empty home that's been on the market a while. Move in, hope it doesn't sell within 30 days - then it's yours, no questions asked.
@@AmyThrash During the mortgage crisis back in the late 2000s, people would find an empty, bank-owned property and break in, get the utilities turned on in their name, and live there rent free for years.

If airbnb took the rent money than they need to give 100% of the money to the owner. There need to be a state law for this. In this modern day law enforcement should be able to check the county system for the real owner name in seconds. There's no excuses for this mess.
As an attorney (now judge) let me say up front that it’s insane to rent out your home or other property via AirBnB. You have virtually no legally enforceable protections in any dispute with the guests and AirBnB offers nothing to owners/hosts in terms of resolution (certainly not financial remuneration). When things go wrong, and eventually they always go wrong if you rent out your property long enough, you as owner are on your own to resolve the issues, whether it’s evicting guests turned squatters (and it happens a LOT, even pre Covid) or recouping damages AirBnB disputes and/or doesn’t cover. On a personal note, I’d sooner go back to staying in youth hostels while traveling than use AirBnB again as a guest. Every experience in 4 different cities in 2 countries has been its own unique hell. And far from money saving. I’ll stick to the Ritz. Hell I’ll stick to a Red Roof Inn compared to some of the shit holes I’ve wound up baited and switched into😂
It's the cities job to make restrictions. My girlfriend use to sub list her rental through Airbnb, she had to stop, because she had to proof she owned the place.
I know two people in Los Angeles that rent out luxury apartments and list them on AirBnB. They make lots of money but it gets crazy when the person loses the keys or gets a noise complaint. I think this is a much bigger problem then this news clip is portraying.
I might have to move back in to my home and decide to buy a protection dog that only recognizes me as a friendly. Or secretly hire a "burglar" to invade my home. Or claim property in the home had been stolen or destroyed, vandalized. Or put drugs in their belongings and place a call in to the DEA saying I think my roommates/tenants have drugs that I don't want to be blamed for. There's GOT to be a way to handle this.

When Airbnb launched their business here in San Francisco years ago they sent invitations to several property owners enticing them of extra income they could earn by listing their property with them. I responded to their invitation asking them how they are going to address the law in San Francisco that prohibits renting less than 30 days. They answered back by virtually saying we don't address those problems. I knew then that I would never ever have anything to do with this company. This is not a rare situation. A tenant in one of my properties successfully rented our property on Airbnb without any problem because Airbnb does not bother to check if the person listing the property is the owner. Airbnb should be held accountable and be closed down! Stop using Airbnb!
Yes! I went through this. I got sick had to foreclose on a property. The bank decided they did not want it, never told me and now squatters are in there. They are allowed to turn on utilities in my name. I am responsible for the property with taxes but i can not live there because i foreclosed on it. Best answer to the solution yet! 💯 Just make sure you get friends or relatives with a different last name to book it so that they don't suspect it's you, the owners.
No that cannot be done because knowing a squatter comes to your unit and has stayed there more then 30 days and you cut off water and electricity you can face a lawsuit as the owner. A lot of laws that protect tenants in California. Remember a squatter if he is there a week and you find him in there then you can call the cops to kick him out. Other then that you can’t if the 30 days pass.
But the landlords shouldn’t be paying water & electricity. The billing should be mailed to the address listing the original tenants on the lease as the ones footing the bill. Let the squatters deal with it. If they complain tell them to go and change it over to their names.
Welcome to California. It's been 2 years and my wife and I are still in court to evict someone. California is a squatter state. The Sheriff said, she would be arrested if she returned. Sadly, she lost most of her furniture in the rain. That's your home... cut the WIFI, water, all utilities off... and hire a private company to get them out. Its possible.

It's not rare at all! Just not reported on TV!!

Maybe you joke but this is a great way to do it. You know you will win in court, so what are they going to do. Sue and lose? or just leave? Good idea.
You can’t! They can sue you for that. Even if it is your house. Look it up.

Absolutely!! Although I've used Airbnb extensively, myself, while traveling and it's been a Godsend for me, for travel, I totally agree with you!! Airbnb has caused some of the worst problems!! This disgusting "wannabe hotel organization" should be taken to task and prosecuted!!
So someone who owns *_AND LIVES_* in their home, wanting to host a couple rooms in their house is perfectly fine!
The problem is many have taken advantage of this scheme and turned it into a de facto "hotel business" buying up several houses *_for the sole purpose of running Airbnb "hotels"._* This should be made ILLEGAL, and people running these unlicenses, and therefore illegal" hotel chains" should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law!
@That Guy Yes, I did read about those, and I was beyond thrilled that these people are in REAL TROUBLE!! Couldn't be happier. They can't pay the mortgage on the house because the original tenant never paid rent, left, and can't be found to sue or be held criminally livable. The squatters are in the house, and the owners can't take repossession because of "squatters rights". They can't afford the payments due to all of the financial issues up to this point and without anyone in the house paying rent, they have no extra income to pay the mortgage
They are people living in it and refusing to leave, you can’t sell your house like that.

A tenant in one of my properties successfully rented our property on Airbnb without any problem because Airbnb does not bother to check if the person listing the property is the owner. Airbnb should be held accountable and be closed down! Stop using Airbnb!
amazing how many people didn’t question that perhaps this is the stupid governments fault for having squatters rights laws?
Yes! I went through this. I got sick had to foreclose on a property. The bank decided they did not want it, never told me and now squatters are in there. They are allowed to turn on utilities in my name. I am responsible for the property with taxes but i can not live there because i foreclosed on it. These people have lived there for 7 years for free while i pay the taxes. I can evict them but that would cost thousands that i do not have and other squatters would just move in. They take down the no trespassing signs and break in. It is a nice area too! I live in an apartment. They have all the rights. This is terrible to go through when you are sick, in and out of hospital and on disability.
@@SunnyCarnivore what state are you in?
@@mjtheory Florida
@@SunnyCarnivore evict them and airbnb it yourself. Or let me do it lol
@@mjtheory i can not afford to evict them! Are you ready for this? There is a law that states that a squatter who has squatted for 7 years and has contributed to improving the property such as cutting the grass can now own it. I don't know how it works, all i know is after 7 years of occupying the property they can take it over and apply for the title that the bank still holds.
One way to get your house back, book it and then don’t leave and change the lock
I like how you think!!!
Best answer to the solution yet! 💯 Just make sure you get friends or relatives with a different last name to book it so that they don't suspect it's you, the owners.
Can the Landlord cut off the electrical and water to their house?
The squatter may leave if they are uncomfortable.
I hate when people use this as a defense.
But in this case it's a good question. Bc the owners don't live there effecting there's no need for it.
But the landlords shouldn’t be paying water & electricity. The billing should be mailed to the address listing the original tenants on the lease as the ones footing the bill. Let the squatters deal with it. If they complain tell them to go and change it over to their names.
The laws are absolutely ridiculous in regards to squatting
Welcome to California. It's been 2 years and my wife and I are still in court to evict someone. California is a squatter state. The city can go around to homeless encampments and toss people off of public property, but a homeowner can't remove a squatter from private property without spending thousands and begging the court for help.
CA certainly loves criminals like squatters, shoplifters, scammers, drug addicts, alcoholics, the unemployed, welfare grifters. It's become a trashy lawless state. I'm thankful I don't live there!!
Plot twist then the airbnb renters re-rent for double for long term "guests". Once again locking the property into lease agreement. Rent-ception.
I had 2 extra room empty for years, I rather have less $ in pocket than deal with all this drama and fear.
All landlords can think about, is making Money off people just needing Shelter. Totally something people should make major profit off...
@@VancouverCanucksRock Owning rentals is a business not a charity.
Wait in CA, squatters, who have no lease, have more rights then the actual homeowner....😳😳😳😳😳
Same thing is going on in Las Vegas with squatters in peoples homes and bc of the laws you can’t kick them out.
It’s like the laws that passed that now protect homeless encampments in California. It’s against the law to touch or move someone private stuff even if it’s in public domain.
All the home owner need to come together in a class action suit against the AirBnB. This is bs
Don't blame airbnb. Blame the scamming tenants.
It's easy to check tax records online in the jurisdictions I'm familiar with.
This happened to me... I rented a room to a seemingly nice older lady. She gave me a bad check. This was 25 years ago. I told her I need the rent... she said, I'm not paying rent and I'm not leaving.
She worked during the day. I hired a friend to get all her stuff out (She had a house load of furniture), had my Sheriff friend at the door when she returned home. The locks had been changed. The Sheriff said, she would be arrested if she returned.
Sadly, she lost most of her furniture in the rain. That's your home... cut the WIFI, water, all utilities off... and hire a private company to get them out. Its possible.
That was 25 years ago and no Covid. Now, you have to be careful because after 30 days your screwed and you can't cut off utilities no matter how stupid it sounds.
This makes me not want to use Airbnb.
Me, too after today and I was going to buy stock from this too. Nah.
Don't buy a house until you're ready to move in specially in these times🧐😫
Agreed but Maybe the house won't be in the market for that long ...yea the market is slow and bad now but who knew that a year ago?!! Also..realtors tell you there are other families looking at this one right now and get you to sign it, regardless of what your current responsibilities are elsewhere!
This is so F#caked up on so many levels. Also, make sure you NEVER, EVER allow anyone (air bnb, or otherwise) to stay in your home for 30 days or more.
Greed always get you in trouble.🐼
If you plan to rent out your property under a rental contract, register with Airbnb anyway even though you are not using their service. You need to be one step ahead of the scammer.
