- I'm leaving no (Infinity) Stone unturned. In this video essay, I try to sort through the specifics of four big criticisms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: a reliance on the past, a preoccupation with setups, limitations of the genre, and a big action scene to top everything off.
But don't read too much into the length, I am split down the middle about this franchise; it just takes more time to explain the negatives, whereas the positives are a little more self-explanatory.

to be fair, its easier to explain why something that is mostly enjoyed is good than it is to criticize it. I like that he took the time to thoroughly explain his points.
I would say that it is easier to nitpick and criticise than to explain, why something is genuinely good, or to really address the various themes in a 20 movie saga.

Definitely. Nat's romance interests across all the movies are sooo confusing and soo bad.
It's obvious that they put these moments in MCU just for the sake of love aspect in MCU.
THey don't make any sense, don't have backstory that much, don't have continuations and etc.
I'm sure various people behind the scenes had a lot of different ideas for Black Widow's development and her love life. But I think because she never got her own movie and was partitioned off to different other heroes' stories (going from Iron Man to the Avengers to Captain America), her overall handling by the producers wasn't stable enough to set up a proper consistent detailed arc for her.

I disagree. I never saw her as a realistic "love interest" for anyone except for Banner cause he was literally the only one who she felt comfortable enough to be vulnerable in front of.
Her "flirting" with Tony and Steve was way too superficial to even assume she had an actual interest in them which makes it even more likely that it was just part of her training as a spy or in Steve's case friendly fire. Plus, even a blind man could've seen the romantic tension between Tony and Pepper in IM2 as well as Steve still not being over Peggy.
@@OdileOdile19 Hmm, I disagree. With the iteration of Steve we were given, I think it would detract from his character arc if he was happy in a relationship. They would have to fundamentally rewrite all his movies to make that work. Steve simply does not have time in his movies for romance. The romance they put in did not carry meaning because not enough time was given to build it up. Steve has to be desperate and miserable on a base level for his arc to carry meaning. I think if anyone should be in a relationship with Natasha it should be Bucky. If more time was given to either character and if there had been more movies from TWS to Endgame I think it could have worked. But either barely has any character at all and so a romance wouldn't carry meaning. I've always appreciated their relationship in the comics and if Natasha hadn't died then I would expect it to be something they'd write in.

i think one of the coolest things about your video essays, is that with everything you don't like, you offer solutions or a different ending than the one we were provided with. it's crazy how often i find myself going 'oh yeah, that WOULD have been better'. i love video essays as a format for critique, but i love even more that with your critique there is creativity of your own provided. i think it shows your diversity as a creator, your ability to not only consume and assess media, but create your own. 10/10.
I think they thinned out Scarlett Johanson's eyebrows waaaay too much when she went blonde. Her face looks...bald. It's such a weird stylistic choice.

I'm glad someone agrees with me about Ant-Man and the Wasp. I was really excited for it after how much I was surprised by Ant-Man, but almost the whole movie could have been left out and it wouldn't have changed anything.
I agree. Ant-Man when it first came out, was a top 10 movie for me. But the second movie just made all the same jokes, in worse ways. The plot was so insignificant as well, and the side characters have never reappeared.
I am certain I watched that movie, but I don't remember anything that happened in it

For real though, it is actually possible to be out there doing charity work, even being a doctor without borders and also have strong opinions on fandoms. My friend's brother is one such doctor and he is also really into Doctor Who. How do you know what lives the people you talk to online live?

While I'm not a tumblr fangirl, I do adore Bucky. BUT while I don't agree about him being "boring", my problem with Steve and Bucky's relationship is more like this: Was Steve really doing this because of his friendship, or because he feels he has to? I mean, Bucky was there when Steve was small and "defenseless", so now, Steve, who has a strong moral character, might feel he has to save bucky because now Bucky's the one who's defenseless.
I'm probably not making any sense but I've always wondered if deep down, Steve didn't do whatever he did for Bucky because he felt he owed it to him.
Just like he kept going back to the "You owe me a dance" with Peggy

Stan Lee is kinda a fraud
Solid Snake I’d argue he’s not a fraud per se (an example of a comic fraud would be Bob Kane, Bill Finger created practically everything about the Bat mythos (the costume, the rogues gallery, the name Bruce Wayne, Gotham City, the origin story,etc.) and died penniless, while Kane was rich when all he did was create the name Bat-Man (It had a hyphen back then)), he’s more of an attention whore (although this might just be the media noticing his dynamic personality), as Stan Lee would not deny the work Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, etc. did for Marvel. The reason why I think “didn’t really do anything, but dialogue and even then was guided by Kirby and gang” Stan Lee is more famous than the “creative geniuses and architects of Marvel” (other than his personality) is because he stayed, they left, and thus was able to build up his fame while the others could not. (Note: Kirby came back but died in the 90s and thus was not able to become popular like Lee).
@@matthewworthy4739 The reason I say fraud is to hope to get people looking into who did stuff. Stan lee was basically just an editor. Which means a lot but it's not the same as writing. Also I'm not a fan in general of the praise Stan Lee gets. Stan lee did give kirby some credit but as a co-creator. To me kirby is the full creator
By all accounts Stan Lee added a lot of his own ideas to the comics, they had a genuine co-operation. In addition, Kirby disliked being in the lime-light, it was less that Stan Lee just took it from him, and more that Kirby didn't want the lime-light in the first place. Stan Lee always credited the other creators, and is, in a way, not much different from Walt Disney or John Lassiter or even Kevin Feige, who are all not necessarily great artists themselves, but really good in putting the ideas of great artists together to a functioning whole and pointing them in the right direction. This is its own kind of talent which deserves to get acknowledged. To me, people who complain about Stan Lee just do it to show how "knowledgeable" they are.

Really well articulated. Loved every minute and even though I consider myself a fan (and have seen every MCU movie in the cinema) I can definitely recognize the feeling of boredom that hit in the middle of the arcs.
Now that it is "over" I've decided to step back and only watch those movies that look interesting in theaters. I don't think Disney needs any more of my money and I just realized that all my big, unforgettable moments at the big screen didn't come from MCU. It came from Blade Runner, Mad Max, Parasite, 1917, Get Out and all these other original ideas.

You captured my feelings about this franchise perfectly. I am able to suspend higher standards to enjoy spectacle and cool shit and the mythological aspect of it and the absolutely amazing fact that this thing has managed to survive years of lots of separate movies, but to watch each movie as a unique film is quite harrowing, for every reason you've listed here and then some.
Something I like about your style here is that when you share a criticism, you also provide an example of one way you could see for the work to avoid that pitfall in your eyes. Both halves are important when criticizing something, and a lot of people who criticize things don't realize that.
I just want to congratulate you on this video. Its inceedibly detailed, well planned and thought out. I loved it. The editing must have taken forever. Thanks for sharing your perspective

in chemistry, the pH determines the acidity or alkalinity (an alkaline solution is a "basic" solution also) of a solution, if your pH is less than 7 the chemical solution is an acid, if it's more than 7 it's a base.
It's measured from 0 to 14 so a pH of 14 is the most basic a thing can be

I'm completely with you on how Bucky wasn't nearly as memorable as he should have been. When he was revealed as the badguy in Winter Soldier, I had no idea who he was, and I saw the first Cap movie! He completely fell out of my memory of that movie.
I feel like with the reveal, you’re either not invested enough so can’t remember who he is, or you’re super invested but already know it’s Bucky because of the comics and all the UA-cam breakdowns etc
You could have done a part three. Lots of info for an hour, but great introspection. Marvel is lucky to have people like you dissecting it.
The MCU has become my all-time favorite movie franchise. I really appreciate the way this breaks down some of the flaws and shortcomings that I often look past. Fantastic work! Both videos were really extraordinarily well done!!
This feels like the video you actually wanted to make and you made the positive one just to try and reduce some of the backlash you may get.
When cap kisses Sharon the significance is he's finally ready/willing to make a move further accepting that his past/old life is behind him. His relationship with Peggy isn't about romance, it's about what could have been, what he left behind (see White Buffalo). We're not sad that she dies, we're sad that the last piece of his old life is gone. We're sad for him, not her.
But then they reverse that significance in Endgame by making Steve suddenly hung up enough on Peggy to throw away the rest of his life for her.
That's an interesting perspective I hadn't considered, and I kind of like it. I was never compelled by the Peggy/Steve romance enough to enjoy it at face value, so I think you're right in it being mostly symbolic. I just wish they'd chosen a love interest for him other than Sharon, because the implications of him choosing to persue a relationship with the descendant of his old love really makes it seem like he ISN'T moving on; he's clinging to the familiar in whatever way he can. Doesn't help that Steve and Sharon had no chemistry; maybe if they did the impression would have been different.

@@andrewsteltenkamp6673 Peggy was, to steve, dead and out of reach he had moved on. Now they go back in time and he sees her again. After surviving the last battle against thanos and getting the chance to go back to Peggy at the end of what may as well be his last battle he went for it without a second thought. It is completely believable to me that he would leap at a second chance with the woman he loves but never got the chance to be with.

See, I think one of the strengths of these movies is that the vast majority of the time, they DON'T rely on excessive setups where they're not necessary, while other competing "cinematic universes" try way too hard to do so. In my opinion, Age of Ultron is an outlier... which makes it such a shame that it's so important. The unnecessary introduction of Wakanda taking up like 20 minutes when Civil War introduces Wakanda way more effectively with a single newscast is just..... ugh
As a fan of Age of Ultron (like a super fan) and as someone on a professional writing staff the only common complaint that holds up Is the Thor thing but Joss has said multiple times he was forced to add that unnecessary plot in order to add the character development scene. Otherwise everything in the film is explained through natural character progression.
@@noahreisner5199 Thor's swimming pool is definitely the worst, but there are a lot of other problems. The movie basically stops completely to go to Wakanda, the Scarlet Witch hallucinations don't accomplish anything besides being a cheap way to divide the Avengers again like they did in Avengers 1, and Ultron becomes evil for essentially no reason. And those are only the structural issues - even the cabin stuff that Whedon rightfully fought so hard to keep isn't very good. Plus Natasha/Bruce is hot garbage and is only there because of Whedon's hangups with women TBH.

19:24 tony also grabbed the sceptre which also makes you more prone to your desires (as seen in avengers 1 when bruce grabbed it and loki of course) This is also a thing tony has ptsd over in iron man 3 because he saw what was in the wormhole that nobody else did.

The biggest problem with writing Black Panther characters if they have to make all of them perfect to avoid racism.
The best part of Marvel characters is how they make mistakes and are silly, flawed, arrogant or not perfect. Like Tony Stark is a genius, but he's a narcissist dick. Captain America is a noble super soidler but he's a super moral goody two shoes church boy. Thor is a god but he's a (relatively) dumb forigener jock who misses references and is extremely proud and pompous.
But to avoid racist overtones, they made everyone in Black Panther insanely perfect. Like you can only describe everyone in black panther positively. There isn't one "flaw" in any of them. T'challa is a heroic strong understanding liberal leader who helps everyone. Shuri is literally the smartest person the MCU, fixing Vision no one else can even fathom in record time. And Nakia is an insanely strong, smart and loyal women soilder that is somehow just as strong as T'challa with no powers?
I would've preferred if Shuri was childish and girly. Still smart but had a childlike side to her. Or Nakia was a loyal servant of throne and while a fierce warrior opposed the Black Panther when he wasn't king. Or T'challa being extremely defensive of Wakanda and refusing to let other affairs threaten his people.
Instead, everyone is this washed over version where they're all exactly the same. Perfect heros with no flaws.

After thinking about this for a looong time, the only way I can say it is.....Comic books have always been deep but very VERY in-cohesive. We have always accepted that but now that they're on the big screen(of screen in general), we expect everything from the comic books but also expect it to have that depth that movies and T.V. shows have but they are totally different worlds.
I mean I feel that has more to do with Disney and the style Marvels going for. They overvalue cheap gags and comedy to the point it loses any emotional weight because let’s face it actual comic books don’t have these type of flaws where it’s just overly comedic just for the sake of it

I get your gripe with Bucky not having enough impact, but it's not just about their friendship. Steve is still very human and when Peggy dies, Bucky represents the last piece of his familiar world. With all the change that's happened since he came out of the ice, Steve's fighting to keep the things he can actually relate to in this new and very alien world.
I think Captain America, in particular, is a better character than people give him credit for. The reason is subtle while also blatanty obvious. He's not from our time period. He acts a lot like my grandfather. He doesn't show a lot of emotion, even though he's feeling them very deeply. Romance via courtship was a lot less direct, hence the repeated allusions to a dance they never had. Male-male friendships more emotionally distant with competitions or subtle phrases conveying deeper meaning.
But you're absolutely right about the Marvel movies being for two separate audiences. The fans need enough comic book canon to not feel jilted and the normies just want a story they don't have to think to hard to enjoy. I think striking that balance is what made the movies great. If they had picked one audience over the other, I think the quality would've suffered. Because money.

As someone who used to love the MCU until I didn't, it's nice to see someone else understands WHY some people don't like these films, aren't hyper/crazy about them, or fell out, even if you, yourself still enjoy them.

That comparison to 'The Help' at 48:13.. Ouch. But it was illuminating.
I stayed away from the video for a while because I didn't want to watch another "Disney bad, superhero bad, I hate funny metal guy, subscribe button to the right."
Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised. I've always found enjoyment in the MCU but also always felt it could be a whole lot greater. This video is exactly how I wish I could articulate that.
Some good points some off the mark. For a serialized franchise it is entertaining but lacking character development in some of the lesser characters. Although, considering we couldn't have 5 hour films, I don't think it was entirely possible. And despite the issues, Marvel has still accomplished what Sony, DC, and all other companies have failed to do.
Plenty of other films have character development without needing a whole cinematic universe.
I disagree with a lot of your points and only agree with some. However, this was a well made and thoughtful video and thank you for making it.
There were so many tired points...some of them simply fall into the "why is this a Cinematic Universe" category, and others fall into the "why aren't you doing what I want you to do" category.
Also, killing characters is overrated. It's the most boring and overdone of all consequences.
@@swanpride Overrated? Its been the stable of storytelling. If anything I hate plot armor more than anything cause it doesn't feel impactful because I know they won't die. I doubt Marvel will ever kill off characters because it'll kill off their banking tool. Not saying it'll be a great 'the unexpected' choice but at the very least plan it out know who you can replace respectively.

@@hiptydiptateejack8712 but you can't just blindly kill off characters for the sake of it, there needs to be a purpose which is what @swanpride was saying. They can still survive but have a proper send off like captain america in endgame.

What I like about the MCU? The first Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Scar Jo wearing a bodysuit. What I don't like about the MCU? Everything else.

I thought I should care for along time, and then I realised I wanted to have loyalty to a franchise that wasn't made to entertain me. There is nothing of interest here. Chris Evans was amazing in Snowpiercer. Snowpiercer was allowed to be a well-written comic adaptation. Curtis was a full character and the other characters and the story are memorable because it was told well and it made me care. Marvel got caught up in their own MCU hype. I don't remember any of the avengers movies, though I've seen a few.

Romlow aka cross bones is like the only member of the STRIKE team who gets any lines what more could they have done to make him obvious in civil war. He even has unending lines with captain america in winter soldier. Cap calls him by name alot. *sigh* You ought be observant I think.

But in case you're not: Just because only one character of a team has lines, doesn't necessarily make him important much less memorable. This doesn't make me unobservant, just the run of the mill Marvel moviegoer who this films are basically made for. Jesse, your notions on the lackluster characters of Steve's life in the first 10 minutes of this video is some of the realest shit I have ever seen. You put perfectly to words the limitations that were placed on these characters (and on Steve) by the movies simply not paying enough attention to them. I do like Bucky but I honestly think I somehow forced to myself to like Bucky through repetitive viewings of the Winter Soldier during a time of my life where watching the same thing over and over again was somehow therapeutic. On his own Bucky is lackluster and so are Peggy, Sharon, and Rumlow. In general I think not enough attention is paid on Steve as a character but the truth is probably that the characters that he reflects himself in aren't properly laid out.
I've always wanted to like the First Avenger but, truth is, I don't. I wanted to like it because of its adventure feel and because I realized I liked Steve as a character later on. So it would make sense that I also liked his origin movie. But I don't. I really think they fucked up that movie by what they chose to focus on, at least to my eyes. At this point they for sure knew that they were going to focus on Bucky later on. So why not spend some more time setting him up? He barely gets a word in edgewise and Steve does not mention or even think about him until he's suddenly there in the Winter Soldier.
To me, the First Avenger paid attention to the wrong things mainly by paying any attention to the Howling Commandos. I get that it's a big comic thing and I guess that's why I don't care for it because I didn't read the comics. But so much time of that movie is wasted on things that aren't important to Steve's introduction or his evolvement later on. The Howling Commandos are never brought up again, but Bucky is. Bucky is brought up again to play a super pivotal role in the story of Steve and the Avengers. And then he's forgotten about. I guess there just wasn't enough time but I always felt that Bucky had more to show than what was actually on screen. Who doesn't like unreliable narrators with anger issues but a heart of gold? I know I do.
I'm looking forward to the Falcon and the Winter Soldier show just because I'm curious what they want to do with his character. Because I feel like Bucky was allowed to show a miraculously tiny range of emotions. Not because Sebastian Stan is a bad actor but because it wouldn't have made sense otherwise. Not enough time was spent on him for the audience to feasibly believe that he wouldn't just be permanently depressed until the credits rolled for every movie. Not enough time was spent on him to allow him to even be his own character. He is just a mirror that we use to reflect Steve and the other characters in. Thinking about it now I have zero clue who Bucky actually is because his characterization is 20 seconds on screen and then he's effectively someone else and we have to start over. I remember the most jarring scene in CW to me was the one where they catch Bucky and stick his arm in that vice. And Bucky is talking about Steve's mother. And I was like "what?" That scene isn't earned. Bucky all of a sudden remembers and I didn't buy it and I still don't. The fact that TWS and CW work as movies with the fact that so much hinges on whether we find Bucky's cause sympathetic or not is a bit bonkers.

I haven't seen all the shows but I'd probably rank it the lowest of all of the ones I have seen if I had to consider them all objectively. Subjectively I like it JUST because it has characters that I'm actually invested in (unlike WandaVision and Loki).
I reread my comment from a year ago and it's still all true to me. Bucky was a main character of the TV show but again he was sidestepped and not enough time was spent on him. We get a little scene of him crying by a fire and then him being a bit pissy during the whole show. But that's such a waste of his character. The very first part of the first episode is the best because we actually get to see Bucky struggle to interact with the world around him, struggling with his past and his future. It's then very quickly forgotten about to move on with the honestly very stupid and poorly written plot and to focus on Sam.
Bucky is again in the shadows. I think he deserves more attention because there is so much that he can give. He should depicted more like Daredevil in his TV show. As a flawed hero turned vigilante, struggling with personal problems and problems way bigger than him. He should fight more like Daredevil too.

Thing is even Ultron has some (obvious) challenges that were foisted on it by the studio, it has the most quotable script of any installment in the MCU. Just that "language!" through-line is spectacular.
Romanov had by far the most chemistry with Cap. He was a genuinely good man who could stand up to her. A person she could actually trust. The thing with Banner felt forced and it came out of no where.
On the other hand, even though Cap is a world-class athlete, he couldn't begin to compare to Hulk in a game of, as Tony put it, "hide the zucchini".

This has made me realise just how much of my own information I've subconsciously injected into these films from the comics and fandom. I love Stucky and Wanda/Vision but now you mention it, very little of that is actually on screen.

I really don't need to see Wanda and Vision going through the same romantic dance we have seen countless times in the movies. I know they like each other and I understand why they like each other. That is more than enough for me.

Cap and Sharon's kiss was hilarious because of Sam's and Bucky's reaction just afterwards.
Peggy was supposed 50% about the romance, though she is my second favorite MCU romance to date, and actually I'd argue that having Steve end up with Peggy was an example of Marvel missing the point.
The death of Peggy is Steve's last connection to his childhood/time before the ice and Peggy is his childhood romance as he was barely, if, 18 in the First Avenger. So by having Steve go back to Peggy the message is go back to childhood, regress and get the fairytale romance.
It's supposed to read Steve finally being selfish, but what he got to watch the war end and go back to Jim Crow/Civil Rights/Korean/Vietnam/Watergate/Kennedy's assassination/let his friend get tortured/let his friend kill his other friends parents(or are they hiding that in Cap stops all that in separate time branch) if he is stopping all that it would be the better choice to stay since he wasn't hanging up the shield anyway. If he stayed he could've semi retired. And just used a stunt double in news flashes occasionally to hide him in plain sight.
But that would've demonstrated depth and maturity which the MCU has failed to develop with it's protagonists and is why the villains(like Loki Kilmonger and Thanos) are the more popular characters and why Iron Man/Black Panther/Dr Strange/Thor/Starlord are the same character guys in charge of a major institution with a partner to bounce witty comments off of. t'challa/bodyguard or sister is the inverse of tony and happy in that t'challa is the straight man. Strange and the Monk are both witty. Thor was changed into this in Ragnarok, while Starlord isn't rich but does run a crew in an isolated ship. *Mickey mouse laugh*
The ironic part of this is; that is DC's schtick, Iconic Heroes defined by a singular trait with 3d villains, except with DC the traits are different between Heroes. While Marvel is about humans becoming heroes and the villains are just guys being bad mostly. Peter fails so Spider man wins. Tony is a drunk. Hank an abuser. Steve struggles with fitting in. Widow lives in regret. Witch feels like a failure. Netflix was the most Marvel Comics we got.

Here's the most basic outline of a character representation dynamic that you can make.
The StoryTeller: The heart of a human being.
gLiTcH: The emotional child ghosts.
The Puppeteer: The logical puppet.
The Shadow World: A sinful black and white world.
Here's a basic Marvel movie plot that I've come up with:
Note to self for the first script 1: Darn it, I fell into the same pitfalls of trying to introduce new characters without making careful sure of giving proper characterization choices for each character in a succinct manner. I'll just have to come back to this with some ideas, brb! Okay, I went back to Adachi and I can't come up with anything, so instead I'm just sticking with some broadstrokes of a plot. Maybe I'll write something much deeper later, in my word document but for right now, I'm actually going to flesh out my concept.
Part 2: I'm sticking it over to the Samsung notes, which I may or may not copy onto a Microsoft Word Document and then write it out, then when I feel satisfied with it make a UA-cam video publishing what I'm satisfied with, and ask for feedback later.
It's pretty incredible to me that story telling wrapped in 2019 after a decade for Marvel, Game of Thornes, and The Big Bang Theory, and after 40 years for Star Wars. Not everyone likes all these stories and there will be spin-offs and prequels, but those stories meant a lot to a lot of people.
"The qualities that make the Avengers great, also make them destructive. Superpowers are innately horrific, superheroes are born out of tragedy," oh boy if you want a series that delves into that concept to an extreme then I seriously recommend checking out Worm.

@SakugaZ I feel like calling Logan a hero isn’t really true. Not even the fact he kills people but the way he fights. He’s not moving with speed and fury as his younger self but rather he’s tired and just swinging.
I always thought that what Natascha and Bruce had wasn’t really about romance, but more about taming/understanding nature, aka the reptilian brain. …which is ultimately how the Hulk ends up being able to control himself.
Another great one, probably the best so far (cause I know you will keep them coming and they just get better and better!). Great humor and as always you make some great points. I particularly like the point about so many characters dying...but not really, to the point it never feels real and you start trying to guess how and when they'll come back. There's no real emotional investment in that.
And while I'm not a super fan, I am also glad for closure and at the same time appreciate the entertainment value the movies have provided over the years. You really put some work and a great deal of thought into this and it shows. GREAT JOB!!!! ;)

The thing about Infinity War was that once I got over the initial shock, I, and I think most people, didn't honestly believe that anyone would stay dead. There's never any sense that anything ready matters because no one looses in the long run.

At the time of Civil War, I’m pretty sure I’d seen all the previous movies at least once, and I didn’t even recognize crossbones as being the guy from Winter Soldier, so yeah that definitely could’ve been done better.
I agree with a lot of your points, but the Guardians 2 rewrite would ironically lessen a bit of the emotion for me without that ravager’s funeral thing. Rocket’s line about his family still caring about him, that guy from Yondu’s crew yelling with how happy he is, I think those parts really made for a memorable scene to end on. I agree with your point though about emphasising the emotion of the movie, one of the reasons Guardians 2 is one of if not my favourite MCU movie is because of the characters and emotion of it.
I may disagree with some of you point but your videos overall are solid.
I think as you touched on, one of the primary issues with the homogeneity in the mcu has to do with the fact that there only seems to be one type of conflict, person vs person. Even in movies where it may seem like its person vs society (i.e. winter soldier) it always comes back to the threat of the "bad guys". Things are so black and white. And even though in almost all of these movies there's internal conflict, it's never at the center. And I know that these movies aren't meant to be extremely sophisticated pieces of work, but look at something like First Reformed or The Revenant, these are critically acclaimed movies whose subject matter isn't the most universal, but still hits home for many people.

The concern that Marvel brings to me is that of saturation and expectation of the norm. Disney owns an exorbitant amount of IPs now, and it doesn't seem very likely they will want to stray from their billion dollar formulas, whether that be recycling animated films or producing Marvel films with zero stakes and predictable arcs. Beyond Marvel and Disney, other companies seek to emulate more than innovate it seems. Of the 2000s, my biggest cinematic disappointment was I Am Legend. Not because Will Smith was bad, or the changes to the details in the middle, but because the company producing it took a dark, introspective story with an emotionally resonating ending and converted it to the safe positive closure of nearly all films. I honestly had not been more excited to see a teaser since the Lord of the Rings teaser just showing the fellowship cresting a ridge to a swelling orchestral score. That teaser brought my child out, excited to see what could be done with the books I had read to their physical deterioration as a child. I Am Legend conjured my matured interest, and excited me to see that Hollywood seemed ready to address the serious nature of less fantastic stories and preemptively gave me hope for other dark stories to see a big budget and major attention. But the appeal to the average destroyed the emotional resonance the ending is intended to have, and cheapens everything that came before it. I have never left a theater so disappointed as that day.

While most of you said about Bruce and Nat are correct, i disagree that it would have been easily replaced with Steve. While Steve try to avoid the fight and doesn't generally take pleasure in violence, some fights he does to test his limits like not finishing the guy on the tanker right away. He's not Batman he doesn't like hurting people but because he does have an honourable soldiers mindset, he needed to live in the present for over a decade before deciding the conflict he had experienced was enough. The real world equivalent would be a fighter deciding to retire because they feel like they have proven themselves and let it go. Bruce even when becoming professor hulk have 1 single short scene of him fighting. He never liked or wanted any fight to happen.
I also love that Nat can have these great relationship with Clint and Steve that is built on real unquestionable love for each other without it being based on romantic feelings. I would buy that if she didn't get briefly together with Bruce and Clint wasn't married, and if it wasn't a Disney movie and more like Netflix. She might at one point had a sexual relationship with one of them once in a while. 2 years alone and on the run? Heroes have needs and desires too, Nat and Steve are beautiful people. They would feel lonely and looking for a glimpse of good connections while in hiding, if their relationship wasn't based of them having this loving but more familial type of love, but without it being creepy that they did kiss.
And while we are lead to believe that she felt he was out of practice. You can tell that she knew that it felt nice for him, for her too and she was curious trying to prod and tease him a little bit, feeling a bit flattered that he enjoyed it and that she was able to get him focused on her even if it was only a few seconds. But letting it stop there and then wanting him to find someone who matches him because she knows they wouldn't be a good fit as a couple. Showing that unlike before she is starting to want to create connections, even if it's just best friends is as long as it goes, because she didn't except to get friends in her life.

Wouldn't it be better if in age of ultron it was Tony who calms Hulk down? Like in avengers Tony was the only one who whole time was on Hulks and Brice's side, wasn't afraid of them and believed that Bruce will come back and fight. Hulk even saves Tony, he genuinely likes him and cares for him.
If Marvel movies were a TV show we’d only be seeing the first and last episodes of each season.
Just because the Infinity Stones have some particular power if used properly doesn't mean they're not huge sources of extraterrestrial power that can be used for technological innovation, like allowing Hydra to make laser guns in The First Avenger.
Based on how she phrases it, it seems Wanda is trying to unify Ultron's way of thinking and the close-minded perception of Tony she has with the version of Tony they've refused to accept for all these years.
Vision showing up in the last arc serves to make him the incarnation of the Avengers’ unified wills, he's more a symbol than a character, and it works as a follow-up to Ultron's duality with the Avengers, at least during Age of Ultron.
I think the Bruce-Natasha relationship is meant to be forced and bizarre. Yes, the fact we skipped the other routine Avengers fights where that relationship begun doesn't help, but we're shown enough to understand that they're projecting in each other the posibility of a normal life that they can't have, which contributes a lot to the overall theme of discovering where they actually belong.
I prefer The First Avenger using Hydra instead of actual Nationalsocialists because if they included the whole "Evil nazis kill lots of innocent people because they're evil" in a story about traditionalism and nationalism against modernism and technological advancement, it'd feel like yet another WWII propaganda film, which'd be hypocritical with how the film criticizes American propaganda.
Meanwhile I never bought the idea of Thanos believing his bullshit even though he's been planning it for years, his plan in Endgame and Ultron's eugenic plan to save the Earth make more sense. I also wouldn't call Stand, Pierce, Ultron, Killmonger nor Thanos "apolitical".

fucking thank you. well said. this is a well made video, like part one, but alot of it feels like he's picking the easiest flaws with the series that a thousand and one people have discussed. it would've been better to see him try and find better, deeper flaws, or at least more original ones than "characters boring, I'm bored, this sucks."

I agree with everything you say, but to me it doesn't matter. The mythological storytelling style helps me to insert my own more satisfying interpretation of events while i still appreciate the spectacles as presented by the films.

Complaining that they gave Black Widow a love interest "becasue she's a woman" is a bizarre comment when literally every main Avenger has one. It's actually an issue I have with the films, instead of making a few well development relationships, they half ass giving everyone one.
Appreciate the effort put into these videos. I couldn't make all the way though. I couldn't get over the inability to connect concepts in the movies.
