  • When a franchise contains the highest grossing film of all time, it's worth exploring how that happened. There's a lot of discourse surrounding the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but its success was not accidental. In this video, I look at the rough patches of adapting Marvel comics, and how the MCU got to be so popular.
Also, this is my first video essay in 1080p, so enjoy the extra pixels.

I would just tack on the rest of it: "In that sense, being Iron Man ISN'T literal, it's something all of us can do." That, together with the preceding, really made this quote, for me. An AMAZINGLY apt insight, really. Thanks for putting it out there for us!

@@kamalekermawi Tony Stark had his daughter, had a healthy romantic relationship with the only woman he's ever loved, had his giant plot of land to live out life exactly as he wanted after being a billionaire playboy, along with any technology he will ever want or need, and got his life back together 5 years after Thanos' snap.
His decision to sacrifice himself in order to time travel and undo the snap to save everyone else, even though he had everything he needed already, was a hard decision.
Now if he had nothing, his wife and daughter were snapped away, and he was homeless, sacrificing himself for the good of others would be a very easy decision.
      Get it?

Really appreciate this video. I enjoy indie cinema, smaller-budget films, experimental movies, that sort of thing, but the MCU movies have always tugged at my heartstrings. I truly believe there to be an attempt at genuine, heartfelt filmmaking in each of these movies, especially through the Iron Man/Captain America movies and their interactions with one another.

As a film fanatic and passionate storyteller, I think MCU tries to be... you know, cinema. It tries to be those heartfelt realistic grounded films that puts a good impact on you. Some of them succeeded. While some of them didn’t. But at the end they tried, and they are new trying in their tv shows. Besides entertaining us. They failed at telling genuine human stories at times, but I don’t think they ever failed to entertain us.

The actual reason they parodied The Mandarin instead of making him an actual villain is actually to to the Chinese Government. The Chinese Government did not want the people of China seeing a Chinese villain portrayed in the movie, and said if Marvel were to do this, they would not whitelist the movie in their country, which would have lost Marvel a lot of money. This is also the same reason why Dr.Strange's "mentor" ( I'm not familiar with her name at the moment ) is how she is. The original "mentor" was actually from Tibet, and since China does not acknowledge Tibet's independence, they don't want it to ever be mentioned in movies. China only allow a max of I believe 32 US movies per year. If you get on that list, you'll be earning A LOT more money. That's why Hollywood listens to China and their rhetoric.

As someone who is not the biggest MCU fan, I still can acknowledge the genius of the MCU. They understand why people who are comic book fans read comics. It's not just the fights and larger than life characters with world ending plots. It's that these larger than life characters also have relatable desires and traits. Tony is a selfish playboy who desperately wants to be a hero. And of the course of the films, he does. Captain America is not a hero because he took a super serum and now can throw a shield real good. He's a guy who will always try to do the right thing, even in a world he isn't sure what the right thing is. These characters are interesting not because of their superpowers but because of their motivations.

I wouldn't really call the Silver Surfer a crossover for the FF. He was introduced in the FF in a story that's considered classic for the team. Yes, he's become popular enough that he's not just a supporting character in their section of the Marvel Universe but he's still definitely part of that section while having his own thing. Same with Galactus.

i have a feeling when we're older we're gonna all talk about the first time we saw iron man, and the time we watched endgame with our friends, i have a feeling that there is a chance that marvel characters, might become a standard part of our collective understanding, part of our mythos and part of our morals, we'll aspire to the morals of Cap, the intelligence of Tony, and the growth of the others, i think if we pay attention there are stories being told now from this material that will, shape and mold to leaders of our future. i know this sounds sappy and overly optimistic but i truly think the MCU has transcended the category of movie and has become an event for many, the only question is can they maintain it, to maintain such a provoking set of stories

I think Marvel has gotten into the collective conscience, but I actually hope they are only reflections of a deeper truth. When we look at values we do so because they are true and actual, not because a made-up character shows them. In other words, Marvel should never take the place of actual virtues, no matter how religiously held.

Galactus wasn't a space cloud. He's inside the cloud. It was meant to be setting up the reveal for the next movie. If you watch the cloud, when they dive into it, there's just a hint of the cloud coming to the shadow of his distinctive helmet behind it, cutting just short of breaking through it for the reveal. I only noticed on my second watch, because the first time, I was too busy railing at the screen "Galactus is not a f****ng cloud!"

Your videos are great! And I agree that Marvel’s formula has been a huge success both critically and financially. But I also don’t think every studio needs to replicate it exactly. JL was a failure for sure but I also don’t think it’s a failure because it hadn’t copied the marvel formula. Personally, I loved MoS, BvS, and I’m confident I’ll love Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
They did things their own way and that isn’t a bad thing, especially because if they had solo movies for each JL member, everyone would hate on them for copying Marvel. So Snyder had his own Lord of The Rings type five-film arc planned, and I think it would’ve worked great (structurally and otherwise) if there was no studio meddling. While Marvel felt like cookie cutter films, I really appreciated DC for taking a risk and daring to do something different.
I’d also say Marvel had a negative impact on DC because the general audience wanted humorous escapist entertainment instead of deconstructionist character studies of their favorite superheroes. (And gatekeeping and focusing on who the characters weren’t instead of who they were, but that’s a whole different story haha)
Like I said, really enjoy your videos. I just needed to push back on your DC comparison a little bit.

17:48 that line is actually what Marvel Studios said to Fox and Sony, they took their a list characters XMen, Spider-Man fantastic 4 etc. and out of desperation marvel studios turned to there b and c tier, practically unknown characters like iron man and thor, and look where we are now. What a gift xD

update: i have seen part 2 and he addresses this lol
idk about "not needing to watch all of the movies to understand things." Iron Man 3 hinged entirely on Tony having to overcome his anxiety and panic attacks. As a kid, I watched all three of the iron man movies in order without seeing Avengers, so when i watched Iron Man 3, I had no clue what the heck was stressing Tony out so badly or why what that kid in the first scene upset him so much. I think i assumed he, for some reason, was only just now experiencing PTSD from the cave in Iron Man 1.
edit: pretty sure avengers is also the setup for tony having an addiction(?) to making new suits. Without that it just comes out of nowhere in 3 that he just suddenly has all these crazy ass suits.

The Argument of not having to see all the movies doesn't work the other way around though: I didn't watch the Avengers movies and felt really lost while watching the Spiderman movies...

Say whatever you want about the MCU (good or bad), they're truly the few cinematic universes that's still ongoing today and know how to do it right. They're not perfect but they gave us a satisfying conclusion that not even Star Wars could achieve.
