TryTheImpz T yeeeaaaah that’s Hattrem. Hatterene hates when people are screaming at the top of their bloody lungs, and quite frankly, so do I. I prefer to use my mouth for eating rather than yelling as a matter of fact and when I do talk, it’s in a moderate pitch at the loudest and barely audible especially when I’m in public, but this isn’t about me. Hatterene will also target those who are hostile as mentioned in her G-max entry.
hatterene is basically reverse gardavoir, if your sad gardavoir comforts you, if your also feeling strong emotion hatterene kills you, plus G and H are next to each other on the alphabet

Yeah, they won't attack humans and will most likely avoid them and continue on with their day (following the example of a Great White), but most humans would likely panic at the sighting of one since of the whole belief that all sharks are extremely dangerous and might just get mistaken for a evading prey. But yeah, most sharks would not even bother with the pesky primates that invade their territory unless they bleed or do annoying stuff like surfing near them.

It took like a couple years before anyone in the fandom really noticed, but Hatterene is probably based on a hattara, which is a female forest troll and the exact same word is used to mean cotton candy. Hence the pink blue and white colors. Fairy Type has been repeatedly associated with cotton candy, aka fairy floss.

Eric V Duval Game freak has several clichés each time a game comes out. I can't tell if they're doing some sort of ancestral landlocking thing, what with similar pokèmon across generations. Like electric rats and grass lady's in every game since they started, or if they're just doing the same old thing because it works. Personally, I think some of the bug types are too similar as well.

Hatterene’s real body (11:55) looks a lot like a stereotypical depiction of a gray alien. There are a lot of similarities between classical fae folklore and typical alien traits: things like coming from an alternate world, abduction, swapping people with changelings/shapeshifters, and body snatching.

I have a fear of dogs, even those who I know for a fact are harmless, and it takes a lot for me to stop fearing any dog enough to be comfortable around them. It doesn't make any sense but it's just how it works; you might not get it still if you don't experience it yourself, but I hope I explained it well enough

Delphox is more of a vixen fursona not humanoid. I chose Florges because it was difficult to fine a truly feminine humanoid Pokémon.

I was looking for human Pokémon not furries Jesus Christ. When it was difficult to find any then I made an exception to plant creatures.
As an Awen Druid, a practitioner of an old faith & philosophy tied to the keeping of the world and often tied to old celtic "witchcraft," I am INCREDIBLY impressed with your research. Granted, us modern Druids focus more on the nature preservation/historical record keeping, we were "witches" at one point, too, thanks to the church, and you brought up A LOT of facts involved in that title.

@@kiernangreeley8193 The Morrigan is one example yes. However, many pagan religions had that sort of symbolism. In modern paganism these have been combined into one being simply called the triple goddess who represents the three phases of life (specifically female life).
The maiden: the young Innocents of a child enthralled by the world.
The mother: the grown woman who has experianced life, but still has much to learn.
The crone: The wise old woman who has lived a full life, and now approaches her end. Ready to be reborn once more as the maiden.
Oh totally, he almost got to my point. The Morrigan and Hekate are both representations of the triple goddess. I just wanted to bring up the components as represented by Hatterene since it fits pretty well. (See original comment)
actually, I think her tentacles are the loose “hand” from her hat. because she mainly uses it to use moves like psycho cut, psychic, and basically all her moves. Also, in her gmax form, her tentacles grow much larger and are seen causing moves like starfall and mindstorm. So i think she actually has hair that she covers herself up, its just that her tentacles are what she uses for her magic

Another fun witch reference in Hatterene is that she is really lightweight: 5,1 kg or 11,2 lbs. This is interesting because witches were later believed to be very lightweight to support flying on a broomstick. This had as a consequence that in Oudewater, the Netherlands the so called 'heksenwaag' or witches scales, which is one giant balance scale to weigh humans as ultimate proof they were not witches.

Let's not forget the most well-known witch of them all - Baba Yaga. She was supposedly an old and beloved goddess of Fertility (among other things) in eastern Europe before the Christians came and made her the biggest and baddest witch on the block.

To be fair even her old lore was a mixed bag before christianity. For example in exchange for favors she would allways demand a hob be done in a small ammount of time. If the task was failed she would straight up kill and eat the person who failed.

I think my first thought when I heard that Hatterene attacks those with strong emotions wasn't that it was from envy or hatred. Her G-max entry states that she "can read the emotions of creatures over 30 miles away." There are an awful lot of creatures in that area whose emotions she picks up! Can you imagine how that must feel? No wonder she'd attack those with strong emotions when all she wants is some peace and quiet without hundreds of people and Pokemon shouting in her head. Just as a bonus, regular sound alone is enough to get unwanted attention if "you're too loud around it."
This was before I seriously thought about the fact that this is literally just hyperempathy + sensory overload.
Theory:
The Hatterene and Grimmsnarl lines are actually one line with ridiculous sexual dimorphism.

Hatterene's "ene" part could come from the old moon Goddess Selene and it makes more sense with Dynamax entries. They could be seen as something that isn't always as what it seems; Hatterene looks sweet but it has a hair-trigger rage problem. Also if Hatterene is the forest witch she could be referring to Baba-Yaga (or Jaga) of Slovic lore.

At first I didn't get it, but new pokedex entries for Hattrem in Scarlet suggest that both it and hatterene hear emotions essentially as a noise. The stronger the emotion, the louder it is. I would have lost it too if everyone around me was constantly shouting at the top of their lungs.

I've never really gotten "jellyfish" from Hatterene. When I look at it, I see a candlestick. I thought the candlestick look might be a reference to witches using candles in rituals...but I like your theory about the jellyfish traits!

I could totally see Hatterene and Gardevoir as best friends. Hatterene getting overwhelmed by strong emotions and Gardevoir sending her stress and knowing when to take her away for some chamomile tea and and a good fairy tale. Gardevoir as the only Pokemon to help her get out of her head (cause her physical body is very much trapped within the "head" form of the overall design, I'm surprised this wasn't commented on in the video)

I love Hatterene! It’s pretty close to my favorite Fairy type. I’m usually a huge fan of feminine Pokémon after all Primarina is my favorite Pokémon of all time.

An additional source of the inspiration could be the Sidhe. In many tales making a pact with them require that you give something valuable up in return. Perhaps a child of your own? The childlike figure in Hatterene could be the transformed child, turned in something alien to humanity. There has been legends of fairies snatching babies to raise as their own, and placing a substitute to serve in their pace. They're called changelings and it was said that cold iron could injure one.
Which makes sense in Hatterene's case considering that upon gaining a Fairy typing upon evolution, it becomes weak to Steel type moves.
This isn't really about the video, but i think grimmsnarls are the male counterpart to hatterene's species and they are dark types as means of approaching females. As females can read and are hostile towards strong emotions, their dark type comes into play, making so that hatterenes can't read their minds/emotions, and therefore not being hostile.

I always felt like hatterene hates strong emotions because it hurts them, that’s why they act so violently
I've developed a close bond with this line which made me develop theories on their behavior. The line's behavior reminds me of the traits of autism(traits I possess myself) but more amped up. Now I'm not saying this line has autism, more so that they can quite easily suffer from sensory overload similar to folks with autism.
I think these Pokemon aren't naturally aggressive antisocial Pokemon(similar to how witches weren't the evil child kidnappers folks considered them to be) but rather are sensitive to things such as strong emotion and noise and simply don't know how to deal with suffering sensory overload so they resort to the one thing they know that has been working, scaring others away or attacking them. It could be why domestic/caught variants of this line don't show the same aggression as unlike in the wild they have access to folks who are able to teach them less drastic means of dealing with being overwhelmed.

Hatterene probably also draws some inspiration from the Knitting Jenny / Strickliesel. Wich ties into it´s ability to control hair/threads. As soon as I saw a Hatterene I immediately thought: "Damn, this looks like one of these old knitting dolls!" Well, I don´t know if Knitting Jennys were very popular in the UK or something, but there is probably some connection to it.
I remember seeing Hattrems Pokedex entry about it "ruthlessly silencing it's enemies" so I instinctively nicknamed it "abusive ex" and boxed it

Hatterene is one of my favourite pokémon lines, mostly because I am a HUGE historical witchcraft enthusiast and I like to learn more about the superstitions and stereotypes that led to the witch archetype we know today. I can safely say this video is DELIGHTFUL!
