      It's also based on the fact that people would use iron charms (not just horseshoes) to ward off fairies, which supports the steel type and how it's strong against other fairies.

    I read one interesting interpretation of Ribbombee’s fairy typing on TV Tropes. Honey flies are cute, but they also eat bee larvae, then lay their own eggs in their place. The bees then raise the honey fly larvae, mistaking them for their own. This is very similar to the legends of changelings - Fairies would take away a human child, and then replace them with a shape-shifted fairy, with the human parents being none the wiser. I don’t know if this was intentional, but it’s cool to think about nonetheless.

    What I would say about the Azumarill line being Fairy type is this: Azurill, Marill and Azumarill are based on rabbits. I know you said that would not directly explain their fairy type, but in many cultures, including Japanese culture, rabbits are a symbol of the moon. And the moon has a lot of things to do with fae activity.

    • @Sisc0o
      @Sisc0o 4 роки тому +75

      I would also say that rabbits are also connected to Alice in Wonderland, which is quite magical and whimsical so I would understand that connection of it being a fairy. Of course it's not the greatest justification but it works.

      @veledwin1 3 роки тому +10

      I really wish that was the reason, but "rabbit' isn't enough when every other rabbit gets the normal typing. Perhaps they decided it worked in combination with Azumarill's lifeguard aspects, but if that's the case, they still made the wrong decision. Ninetales should have been Fire/Fairy, Blissey should be Normal/Fairy, Ralts and Kirlia should have stayed pure Psychic, the Hattrem line should have the Fairy typing throughout the line, Galarian Rapidash should be have stayed pure Psychic... They've made lots of mistakes when it comes to giving the Fairy typing, but at least _most_ of them make sense. The ones I mentioned above are the only ones that still don't make sense to me. Even Dedenne works (albeit barely) so I'd say that's a pretty good track record in the end.

      - *Galarian Rapidash:* A unicorn. A fully-developed unicorn, to explain why Ponyta don't have it yet.
      - *Galarian Weezing:* It purifies toxins, making it more nature-friendly than its Kantonian version.
      - *Hatterene:* A forest witch. Witches were often seen in the same ballpark as fairies, especially when they were associated with the woods.
      - *Impidimp line:* Imps, goblins, and ogres - which at a time were seen as types of fairies, albeit of an uglier and more brutish variety.
      - *Milcery and Alcremie:* Sweets being generated by magic (as both have magic words in their names).
      - *Zacian:* Not quite as clear, but it could mainly be because of its more feminine details (like its long twin braids and the tufts near its eyes that look like feminine eyelashes). Some Dex entries call it Zamazenta's elder sister, even. Some believe that Zacian could also have some connection to either the Lady of the Lake (the one who provided Excalibur) or Morgan le Fay (King Arthur's sister).

    I find that Fairy type theming can be divided into two groups - the "Fairies" and the "Fae."
    "Fairy" Fairy-types tend to be the widely benevolent ones, often being the ones that generally are supportive or timid.
    Clefable, for example, is noted to have sensitive hearing, and is established as being very timid.
    Mega Audio is already known in its base form for being a dedicated healer.
    And then we have the "Fae" Fairy-types. Several of them are noted to be mischevious assholes that may or may not be evil, sometimes mabipulative, or otherwise completely ignore you unless you make what they percieve as a transgression, at which point they'll attack. Many of them have strange or unsettling traits mentioned in game as well..
    For example, Sylveon's ribbons are noted to be feelers which it uses to lull its prey into a false sense of security so that they drop their guard.
    Hatterene causes headaches by simply being *around* it, and if you're too loud, will try to *kill* you. Not joking. Shield's Pokedex entry specifically says "If you're too loud around it, you risk being *torn apart* by the claws on its tentacle." Did I fail to mention that Hatterene's dynamax form is referred to as "Raging Goddess?"

    I think I know why Marill and its evolutionary line are fairy type. Aside from the common associations of rabbits and mice with fairy tale creatures, Azumarill's body shape and design could resemble the common designs of Easter eggs, and since Easter is and activity of joy and love (similar to the Ralts and Togepi evolutionary lines), then the fairy type makes sense.

    I think Fairy type has a rather significant connection to happiness/positivity/purity/goodness/etc. Despite its name not necessarily suggesting as such, it's essentially the opposite of dark type. So that may help to explain some fairy typings without the need to resort to explanations which may otherwise be farfetched.

    • @bastienlafleur5838
      @bastienlafleur5838 3 роки тому +6

      The thing is that not every fairy type pokemon is happy/positive/"pure"/good/etc. similarly to the different faeries and other folkloric creatures they are based off.

    • @KirbyGotenksabsorbed
      @KirbyGotenksabsorbed 3 роки тому +4

      @@bastienlafleur5838 Not every fairy pokemon is a fairy either, so it works both ways. In fact a large amount of them don't really qualify as a "fairy" at all, especially not without using any leaps of logic. Pokemon types, especially the more unusual ones like psychic, typically have several major themes in them.

    • @bastienlafleur5838
      @bastienlafleur5838 3 роки тому +5

      @@KirbyGotenksabsorbed That's why I specified "other folkloric creature" and while a large amount of fairy type pokemon have a cheery, cute and kind behaviour/design going on, their inspirations are far from that. Their inspirations seem to be what defines them as fairy type pokemons much more than their design and such (with their designs obviously being inspired off and taking elements from the creatures or beings they are based off depending on how faithful the developers stay to the source-material). It's why a lot of pokemon (usually normal) could be switched to the fairy type after it was introduced. On a designing level, most fairy type pokemon are cute and PINK so too atract more younger and feminine people but on a conceptual level, it's pretty clear that they are not just cute/optimistic/happy/kind/etc. In fact a lot of fairy type pokemons who follow closer the source-material they were based off start from being mischievous, purely territorial, neutral or somewhat "evil"(at least to the more widespread human consept of evil) just like the many folkloric creatures and concepts they are based off. And while, yeah, not all the fairy type pokemons are based off of faeries, they are based off of creatures that are very similar. Like the Yo-kai. They aren't faeries but they are very similar in the fact that they vary in shape and size, origins, they are usually mischievous (there is more but I don't think you want me to go into details) and have different supernatural and magic abilities or/and properties. Basically, the fairy type pokemons themselves may vary from being nice, happy, jolly and cute or mischievous, sly, "neutral", etc. (most usually being the cute type) but still have one thing in common which is their inspirations. Supernatural and spiritual creatures, that are tied to nature, are usually mischievous or "neutral" (sometimes "evil") and are tied to mysticism and magic. Now, why they called it the fairy type? I have no Idea. Maybe because, it's a term that they though western audiences would recognize better than the "yo-kai" type or because a larger amount of fairy type pokemon are based off of faeries than other fokloric creatures (or both).

      In the story, the hare was a kami (Japanese Shinto god/spirit) and tricked a bunch of sea monsters (I think they were like sharks, hence Azumarill's coloration) to make a bridge from an island to the mainland. When the shark monsters figured out they were tricked, the last one skinned the hare with one bite.
      The hairless hare (hehe) was then found on the beach by another great Kami (I forget his name) and his procession of brothers, who were on their way to propose to the princess of Inaba. The Hare pleaded for their help, but the brothers told him to wash in the salt water so he would sting. The great kami, however, felt pity and told the hare to wash in the fresh water stream and dry himself with the cottonweeds that grew near, restoring his fur. After he did this, the hare revealed himself to be a kami and guaranteed that the princess of Inaba would marry the great Kami

      @@firebird1080 yeah but it could be fun to theorize why some shiny pokemon look the way they do. One of my theories is that their shiny forms is how they used to look like before a genetic change in their genes to adapt, like how mankind selected which wolves get to breed to inherit genes that make them smaller and cuter. My head cannon is that Charizards were originally black with red wings but they didn't fight as much compare to these new orange Charizards because they didn't look as threatening and that caused female Charizards to choose an orange mate as they fight more and provened their strength. Sorry for the long reply, this was supposed to be a simple response because I like these "every (blank) explained" videos and I got side tracked.

    Looking at this again I think the Sylph inspiration was just subtly included, in some animations sylveon does little hops and you can see it falls back to the ground oddly slowly... I'd figure that somewhat ties into a wind elemental's abilities.

    Three things.
    1. The ancient Britain tribe, the Celtics, is pronounced KELL-tick. Hard C sound like in cake and carrot.
    2. Part of Klefki's design is from the tradition of mothers tying iron key's' to their babies back in the day to keep fairies away. Klefki is humorously collecting them.
    3. Primarina is also inspired by the myth of the Scottish Selkie, a Celtic story. They were magical SEALS who shed their skin and became beautiful women when on land.

You mentioned the lack of beak and talons, to me those traits looked to be replaced with rabbit-like traits. Which actually ties in the egg theme with easter bunny and all. And spreading happiness. Then you got to the Audino/Azumarill rabbit part and I think it ties in even better now.
