@jlee3212001 Kenny Edwards (long time musical partoner of Karla Bonnoff) on bass died in 2010, Michael Botts (ex-Bread, Dan Fogelberg Band) on drums died in 2005. Only Waddy and Dan Dugmore are still alive.

Waddy was part of the Mellow Mafia of the'70s - Dan Dugmore, Lee Sklar, etc. They backed up Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Carole King and the like. Andrew Gold was part of that cadre, too.. The Wrecking Crew was early 60s - Tommy Tedesco, Glen Campbell and all the folks who made the Monkees, Beach Boys and Wall of Sound girl group hit.

This song helped me get through being depressed in 1977. I didn't have a girl friend in high school and I didn't do drugs. I read books so I had to fight a lot from being called a "nerd".Our funds were limited so I didn't have the " cool clothes" because my parents had to pay bills. I felt like I had no one to talk to. When I heard this song it brought me out of my funk. It seems like he was singing about my life. I'm doing OK now and have a teen age son. Thanks to your dad's song I survived a tough time in my life.

Olivia, I recently discovered your dad because of my rekindled interest in Linda Ronstadt. So enjoying your father's incredible talent; he seems so kind and humble in interviews. Such a profound loss for you and your family. I can only imagine your emotion watching these videos of your dad doing what he loved and bringing so much joy and comfort to others. I hope his love still does that for you and inspires you to do the same in your unique way.
I was a teen in the seventies and was more into old movies than the 70's scene-just found out your dad's mom was Marni Nixon, "the voice of Eliza Doolittle!" How I pray your grandmother and father are entertaining all the souls in Heaven! Please know I say prayers of gratitude for people like them who used their God-given talents so wisely and so well while they were here. Your father enjoyed much respect from his peers in the industry, but more importantly, he is cherished and honored and missed by his daughter. You will never be "a lonely girl!"

For anyone who may have stumbled onto this by accident, this is an artifact of what used to be called "music" as played and sung by real-life human beings with actual talent, developed skill and something to express.
This art form died sometime around 1998 ....

Couldnt not leave a word of thanks and prayers.
I remember this song "breaking thru" like a breath of fresh air that summer (1977)
with the distinctive piano throughout. There is really so many things wrong in the world today in particular with music...musically we have regressed into dark ages next to true MUSIC such as was made by artists like Andrew Gold.
R.I.P. Mr Gold truly..your legacy is so important and can only hope we rediscover musicality like yours once again

I noticed AG's daughter made a cameo on this thread. Olivia, your father was blessed with gobs of talent. He effortlessly made everything he touched better. His work with Ronstadt made her sound ( he was the band on Your No Good and others). His solo work in the 70's is still some of my favorite music of all time. His ensemble work with Bryndle together and with it's members separately is brilliant. This performance, with it's intricate syncopation, blended instrumentation, harmony and drive is seldom seen in contemporary music. He got the best of your grandparents genes. I hope you share them.

Wow. Andrew Gold and his all star band sounded better live in 1977 on "Midnight Special" than anything I heard on the Grammys last night by about a light year. Are kidding me? Shit, Andrew Gold sang better in this performance than Adele did last night! This is a rocking rendition and what a tremendous song. Great Waddy Wachtel. These guys really rocked.

    • @RockRollDr78

I couldn't agree more! This was a minor hit but it rocked so hard. Andrew was significant in Linda Ronstadt's career if I'm not mistaken. Choosing a supporting role over the big star but look what he was capable of. What a great song. He's left us I understand but this is left behind. RIP Andrew!

Yep. No computer aided drums, singers, or any other crap!!! Just an artist, (or artists) playing what they created....and playing it live. I turned 16 in 1977. So many, many, songs that year that helped me become an excellent driver. It is so cliché to comment, "Damn, I miss those days!!!!" But, I will anyway. Damn, I miss those days!

    • @amybeth5776
      @amybeth5776 9 років тому +3

Yep...you never see anyone playing the piano when they sing in pop music today...never singing their songs live, not having a headset microphone so that they can dance while they lip-sync their latest throwaway, disposable, auto-tuned single, as well as trying to have their hair and makeup perfect...though I just want to trim that beard! hehe...but I know back then, that was how they looked. And it doesn't matter because it's awesome to see such talent shine!

Michael Botts (RIP) was known as the drummer on the group BREAD and he toured with Linda Ronstadt too. Music of that era was beautiful to listen to and sing along with the artist. Lyrics that stuck in your head for days. The musicians honed their craft like a fine bottle of wine is left to ferment to get an exceptional flavor for the palette to enjoy.

My brother was born 1961 and this song reads like his life. He never forgave my parents or me for the fact I was born. He hated me, burned me when I was 5, made my hell growing up and by 16 I found myself staring down the wrong end of a gun thanks to him. I looked into his eyes and knew he wanted to pull the trigger with all his heart and soul. What stopped him? There were 2 witnesses, that was it. Would have been nice to have a big brother that loved me but it was not to be. Such is life.

You are so right! Waddy's background "fills" are the best, as is the solo. His guitar is always there without being obnoxious. The 1970's was a time when a huge amount of great music was produced. That didn't happen since the era of great classical music composers and probably will, never happen again. Sad.

Yup, and you can see him and Andrew Gold with Linda Ronstadt. One nice thing abut the 70's (pre-disco) when it was a musicians' era and not a producers' is you could see these independent musicians popping up all over on albums and in live performances, and then getting their own shot and you actually cared because they had talent.

I'm 55 years old and lucky enough to have known about this song. I was always into louder stuff like Deep Purple, Boston (my hometown), Black Sabbath, et al. because I was the youngest of 3. But the vocals on this particular song were flawless and he could have just as easily been a Hard Rock/Heavy Metal singer.
The piano part in the beginning sounded like a Sitcom theme to me. Then I found out that he did TV show themes as well. I'm sorry that he passed at such a young age. He really had more good music left in him.

This was really an incredible live performance. It sounded pretty close to the original studio version. He wrote some really great music with Stephen Bishop as well.

I was born in 1972, and can vividly remember my parents singing this song as loud as they could when it came on the radio. Now I do the same for my kids...RIP. WE ARE ALL MORE LONELY TODAY.

Andrew Gold was truly an amazing talent, and quite underrated. This song is a gem. I remember it well in H.S. I loved this song back then, even before I had a clue as to what life really is and all the b.s. it can through at you.

Midnight Special - and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert defined my life. Its a shame my children had no live music to listen to wile they were growing up.
RIP, Mr. Gold. A little kick-ass song you have here.

jawtek82 Wasn't Andrew Gold part of Linda's backing band as well. I mean wow they were great. I had this album as a teen when it came out. His linear notes were hilarious. He was quite a writer with a terrific sense of humor. I wish he had lived longer, and I hope he was saved. It would be great to see him in heaven.

Oh no. I just heard on Mark's show that Andrew Gold passed away. His two hits, "Lonely Boy" and "Thank You For Being a Friend" were such radio mainstays in my Wonder Years. Hearing those songs always brings me back to those summer days in family car trips, or riding bikes with my pals or poring over the new Radio Shack catalog up in the attic. Thanks Andrew, for that and more. Rest in Peace.
