Andrew Gold was Linda Ronstadt’s lead guitarist, keyboardist, and right-hand man in the 70s, on her tours and albums, up to 1977, when he went solo. He died of cancer in 2011, at only age 60

Andrew Gold was part of a very talented family. His mother was Marni Nixon, who dubbed the singing voices for many actresses. His father was an Academy Award winning composer.
And his best girl was Nicolette Larson! What a power couple for the day! Both gone way too soon 😢
Not just famous actresses, some of the most famous movie musicals ever. She was the voice of Debra Kerr in The King and I, Natalie Wood in Westside Story, and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady.

When I was a little girl, there was a local (WA) children's program called Boomerang that I loved. Marni Nixon was the host! It's wasn't until I was an adult when I found out all of her many famous singing roles. I loved this song so much when I was small!

I remember listening to this song when I was 2 in my baby bed or anywhere in the house where the radio was great times.
He was the main guitar player for Linda Ronstadt, he wrote and recorded this Top 40 hit, he also wrote the world renowned theme to "The Golden Girls", as well as countless other accolades......he was also as humble as he was talented!.....he also never received the recognition he deserved....nor did that bother him!
He got to number 11 in the UK charts with this song around late spring or early summer 1977. His biggest hit was Never Let Her Slip Away,which made number 5 nearly a year later. After that he had one further Top 20 hit with How Can This Be Love? in summer holiday time in 1978 and a minor one with Thank You For Being a Friend later that year.
A lot of people assume that the lyrics are autobiographical, because Andrew Gold was born in the summer of 1951, his sister Martha was born in the summer of 1953, and he formed a band called Bryndle in 1969 with Karla Bonoff, Kenny Edwards, and Wendy Waldman, but Andrew admitted in an interview that the song was not about his life. He said, "Maybe it was a mistake to do that, but I simply put in those details because it was convenient. I hadn't been a lonely boy at all - I'd had a very happy childhood."

They formed in 1969 but nothing came of that era of the group. They moved on to all their individual achievements but in 1995 they finally released their debut album and it is incredible!!!

Is t it amazing to think that RSR is in their third year of reactions, with several thousand tracks now done. And yet they can still come up with real gems like this on a daily basis. That’s a real credit to Jay and Amber but also to the deep, deep well of music the last Century created. Looking back our generation were truly blessed to live through that period. ✌️

Yes, another great track, I loved Andrew Gold and it’s great to react to the songs that we grew up listening to. Another great story telling is called “Honey” by Bobby Goldsboro and “This shirt” by Mary Chaplin Carpenter ❤️❤️
Andy's mom, Marni Nixon, and my mom were close friends and aspiring singers in their teens. They signed up for a voice class together at Los Angeles Community College, where my dad was the accompanist on the piano. The two singers kind of adopted him and, according to Marni, they would bribe him (with bread - the kind you eat - which apparently he loved) to play for them outside of class, so they could practice the songs they were going to sing. That led, a few years later, to me being popped out into the world. Our families would get together on occasion, when I was a kid, and Andy and I would play together, while my sister would hang out with Andy's sister, Martha. It felt like every year, my family would sit around the TV during the Academy Awards and root for Andy's dad, composer Ernest Gold, to win the Oscar, which he eventually did for Exodus. All of which is just a lead up to saying that it makes me happy to see you giving Andrew Gold's music some richly deserved attention. "Lonely Boy" is my favorite of his songs and I still get a little thrill when I hear it start to play.
Growing up in L.A...it's pretty cool and that happens alot .Groeing up here i've seen a boatload of stars,interacted with a few by necessity and ignored the rest...the good ol days.
As some people have commented here about Andrew Gold coming from a famous showbiz family, when he was a youngster, maybe 14, he came home and his parents were throwing a party and there were 4 guys there that everyone at the party were flocking to. He went by to say hello and introduced himself and he noticed they had heavy English accents. He described them as very nice. He unwittingly met The Fab Four.

Hi, you two! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here. Andrew Gold was a special talent from California and he died far too soon in 2011, aged 59. I think we know you two well enough to know what you like and, with that in mind, you should listen to his song 'Never Let Her Slip Away'. I'm amazed it wasn't a big hit in the US, but it was over here. It's probably my favourite song of his and it could become your favourite of his too.
He also had a collaborations with the excellent UK band 10cc and he formed a duo called Wax with Graham Gouldman of 10cc. They had a brilliant song called 'Bridge To Your Heart' in 1987. I bought it at the time and I'm sure you'll love that too, with Andrew on main vocal... and perhaps also the bit when Graham Gouldman shouts "horn" and Andrew grabs the saxophone... Check it out! our fave Linda Ronstadt sings the mother's one line with Andrew Gold in this song "we must attend to her needs, she's so much younger than you." if you know it's her, you can recognize her voice which is so nice. I love this song. I was in maybe the 6th grade when this was released. I loved it then, and I love it now. a classic 1970's story-song type tune. the vocals are great. the story. the instrumentals reach the heights, then come tenderly back to the beginning. a great great song. Andrew Gold was a major music man!

I was born in 1954. When I was a little boy I had something important to show to my mother. I don’t remember what it was but it was important to me. My mother was at the kitchen sink washing dishes. I went to her side and said, mama look at this. She didn’t look but she said, oh that’s nice. I said it again and again she said oh that’s nice without looking or even taking a quick glance. I don’t know how many times I tried to get her to at least look for 1 second. She never looked, I could have been holding a dead rat. Finally I walked away a sad, lonely boy. I remember I was in a good happy mood at first. I’m 69 now and I never forgot that. My mother was very good, hardworking, always cleaning washing clothes with a ringer washing machine and 2 tubs of rinse water. Then she would hang the clothes outside on clothes lines. From early in the morning until the evening she was working everyday. In the evening after supper and the cow was milked and the pigs were fed. She would sit crocheting a rag rug, or work on a 1000 piece puzzle, or we would all play cards, usually 500 rummy or rap rummy. Both my parents were good hardworking folks. That one time that she wouldn’t look was the only negative thing I can remember growing up. So I think I was the lucky one to have such good parents. Good yes, perfect no. One important thing that they always did was take us to church every Sunday morning.

This was Andrew's biggest chart single reached number 7 on Billboard pop singles chart in 1977 his other big hit was Thank you for being a friend the intro theme to the series The Golden Girls 1985- 1992 RIP Andrew keep up the great work guys.
That line where he sings he "taught how to fight to be nobody's fool" then the chorus really kicks is in tremendous.

I think that the most important message of this song is being missed. That if you parent a child but raise them by routine and follow a "system", especially teaching them to being cautious of others ( "to be nobody's fool" ) instead of being embracing of others, then you are going to be raising one very lonely and embittered child.
It's an amazing feat to put such storytelling into a song lyric and have a ring of truth to it. It's very much in line with what Arthur Janov was writing about at the time.
I never took it as he ran away. He turned 18 and left home. (born on a summer day 1951, left home on a winter day 1969)
Andrew died too young at 59 in his sleep of heart failure in 2011 while recovering from kidney cancer. It's so sad that his Mom, singer Marni Nixon, had to see her son die as she lived for an additional 5 years. But his Mom was a more famous singer than even he was. Not only was she the singing voice of leading actresses on the soundtracks of several musicals, including Deborah Kerr in "The King and I", Natalie Wood in "West Side Story", and Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady", she also sang alongside Julie Andrews in the convent in "The Sound of Music" where she also starred as Sister Sophia.

Interestingly, Andrew later said that he kind of regretted writing that song because people thought is was autobiographical when in fact he said, I actually had a very happy childhood. Nevertheless, some people do experience that as a child. So, the song still has a place even though he says he didn't personally experience that.

Andrew Gold was absolutely amazing. I HIGHLY recommend you guys listen to the duo/band he had with Graham Gouldman (from 10cc, who you also need to listen to more) named "Wax". They made some amazing 80's music. I'd recommend starting with "Shadows Of Love".
I bought this song as a 45 when it came out, loved the riff, later found out that he played on several Linda Ronstadt and Nicolette Larson songs, both of whom I was a fan of in the 70's. A lot of band members save that one special song for themselves and this was his.
I wish all mothers could be as caring and understanding as Amber seems to be.

I cried the first time i listened to this song. It has so much in it that fits my dad's life. My dad was born in 1951. He was the oldest child. He had a younger sister. His childhood was very sad. His parents didnt have a happy marriage and they loved to pit brother vs sister. My grandparents even sold my dad's bicycle when he was a child so they could buy a bicycle for his younger sister. My dad graduated high school in 1970. He purposely flunked his senior year in 1969 to avoid the Vietnam draft. Both of my grandparents have passed away and my dad has not seen or spoken to his sister in over 12 years. And he said he would be happy with never seeing or speaking to her ever again.

One of my all-time faves. I really felt for the little boy in the song, being one of those children who felt alienated in my own family. So the song speaks to my own experience, even though when I first heard it I was way too young to put the feeling into words. This song did it for me.
This reminded me of another song put out a couple of years later in 1979 by John Stewart. 'Gold' is a great tune featuring the one and only Stevie Nicks. Hope they'll give it a try some time. It turns out Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac) plays guitar on this song and Mike Botts (Bread) plays the drums.

My favorite Andrew Gold song. The mid-section with the instrumental solo makes it clear what the feelings are of the "lonely boy". Andrew Gold was also part of Linda Ronstadt's studio and touring band in the 70s and 80s.

One of my favourite songs, it immediately transports me back to my school days in the 70s when cares were few. Andrew was a great singer songwriter who should have had alot more hits than he did and died way too young. He was a good country singer too. Never Let Her Slip Away is another good one and features backing vocals from Freddie Mercury and Timothy B. Schmit (from The Eagles).

I was watching one of our old reactions and Amber was talking about her bluegrass roots and how she likes that music. I'd love to see you react to Billy Gilman's song "Roller Coaster". It's a fast happy song and Billy looks like he's having so much fun singing it that you have to smile.

My favorite Linda Ronstadt cut is "You're No Good" her original studio version. It has practically a tapestry of guitars....a slide, a chorused up rhythm guitar, etc...and Andrew Gold played them all, dubbing one on top of the other. Maybe he played the keys too. He was Linda's onstage bandleader when she was at her 70s peak.
The only other Andrew Gold tune I know is "Thank You For Being A Friend." Both these songs are classic 70s west coast singer/songwriter efforts.

I used to kind of get Andrew Gold and J D Souther mixed up sometimes. They both look very similar, had long red hair and were involved with Linda Ronstadt.

Hey Jay and Amber!!! Fun fact. Did you know that Andrew Gold was part of Linda Ronstadts band for a long time? True. He was her main guitarist and played keyboards as well as wrote some her songs. The first song you did of his was actually the theme song from the show The Golden Girls! Thought you'd like to know that.
I find this song sticks with me hours after listening to it.
This song reminds me a lot of a similar themed song of a father who did not have time to interact with his son [due to work], but the son accepted it and still wanted to be like his dad.
When he grows up, the tables are turned and he hasn't time for his dad [due to family and work]: Harry Chapin - "Cats in the cradle".

Martika is certainly worth reacting to as a 80’s female singer. “Martika’s Kitchen” for a bit of fun or “Love Thy Will be Done” for something slower. Martika certainly had plenty of male fans with her poster on their bedroom wall. You’ll know why when you see her.

I have loved this album since it first came out and am so glad you found him. As a side note the album cover was a see what’s happening without what’s is happening… example electric guitar not plugged in, window drapes blowing but the window is closed.
His Mother Marnie Nixon was THE go to for Hollywood voice over work. Might want to check her talent out.

If ever the word underrated should be used it would be for Andrew Gold's album "Whirlwind" from 1980. Not a bad song from start to finish. A truly great pop/rock gem. Good luck finding it.
