Lonely Boy - produced by Peter Asher.
Andrew is known for being a singer, songwriter, musician and arranger. His works include the Top 10 single "Lonely Boy" (1977), as well as "Thank You for Being a Friend" (1978) and "Never Let Her Slip Away" (1978).
Gold was a multi-instrumentalist who played guitar, bass, keyboards, accordion, synthesizer, harmonica, saxophone, flute, drums and percussion, as well as more arcane musical devices such as ukulele, musette, and harmonium.[1] He was also a producer, sound engineer, film composer, session musician, actor, and painter.
Gold played and recorded with artists such as Carly Simon, Jennifer Warnes, Linda Ronstadt, Stephen Bishop, America, Nicolette Larson, Maria Muldaur, Neil Diamond, Barbi Benton, Juice Newton, Leo Sayer, Freddie Mercury, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Karla Bonoff, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, John Lennon, Brian Wilson, James Taylor, Roy Orbison, Don Henley, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, Cher, Jesse McCartney and J.D. Souther.
He played a major role as multi-instrumentalist and arranger for Linda Ronstadt's breakthrough album, 1974's Heart Like a Wheel, and her next four albums. Among other accomplishments, he played the majority of instruments on "You're No Good," Ronstadt's only #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, and the same on "When Will I Be Loved," "Heat Wave" and many other classic hits.
This song is definitely a reason why there will never be another decade like the '70s. This is brilliant music.
Very true. Melody and Harmony were King and Queen. Fantastic songwriting, musicianship, production and artistry.
well said,,,,quite right !!
Hell yes!!!
Yes indeed 1000% right.!!!!!
The Best Decades ever ❤ 70s
They don't make music like this anymore. The vocals, the piano, the drums, the lyrics. I could listen to this song a million times over.

Classic 1970's. We never knew how good we had it!

I am an adopted musician, so I definitely understand the feeling..:)
Some of us DEFINITELY knew!

Spot on.
His vocals were so precise, so crisp. We need songwriters and singers with his talent.
This applies to all musicians in this track. The precision and congruence is immaculate.
I have very precise pipi.
Compared to todays lyrical content where they repeat the hook over and over this is a musical masterpiece! Spectacular musicianship
@@richardmassei9488 thank yo for compliment! my 3 bridez also call it mastapiece
It's the invisble gods of sound behind the scenes, people like Bill Porter who made that sound possible. We dont have the voices nor we have the hands to take those sounds as they came....
How lucky we were to be teenagers in the fantastic 70s
I was just thinking the same thing thing, Paul.
Indeed. Im 53 now. There was a time and that time has gone....4ever
Exactly. I remember staying up late to see my favorite bands on Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. Now kids today can see them anytime by logging on. I think we appreciated things a helluva lot more back then.
Ain't it the truth !
We really were. Did not really know it then though.
Any 70s and 80s teens here? That was such a brilliant time to be alive. (This comment was originally left by my brother Stephen born in ‘74)
And some really remarkable technical things done then too, WITHOUT computers! For example, 10cc's "I'm not in love". Did you know what went into making the background vocals or who's voice was repeating "Big boys don't cry"? Here's a link to how it was made. Just a really interesting story! ua-cam.com/video/3oxe4mlsQos/v-deo.html
Sure was.
I'd be honored if some late 70s/early 80s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of TIME PASSAGES by Al Stewart, THE PINA COLADA SONG by Rupert Holmes ua-cam.com/video/TTiZQb9DC58/v-deo.html and WHAT A FOOL BELIEVES by Michael McDonald on my YT in tribute to the masters of the melodic sound of the era. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace and stay safe in the '020s.
graduated in 90, but obviously listened to 60,70 early 80s classic country, pop, classic and southern rock stations back then. Was not a hair band fan at all (except van halen) and by mid 80s pop/rock just turned to crap. I sit and listen to a lot of the same music and some johnny carson/early letterman on here wishing i could turn the clock back. sad and sucks and im not 50!!
'85 Grad here, but definitely remember this from my elementary school days
This song has been playing in this lonely boys head since 1978! Gives me goosebumps every time!

I grew up in the 60 and 70 graduated high schoolers in 1975. Today I’m 68 and anyone born in 2000 missed out on some of the greatest music ever recorded. My kids enjoy the music of the 70 and 80 plus some 90 music.

We were definitely lucky to have lived and grown up during that time. We were 14 when this came out back in 1977, with Welcome Back Kotter, Happy Days and Barney Miller on the tv! Hard to believe I'm an old man now at 60, but that's in chronological AGE ONLY!! Still a kid at heart especially when I hear this music!!

He was very talented his dad Ernest Gold was a famous film composer as well. I'm a Gold these guys were distant relatives but sadly I never got to meet them

Music like this soothes my soul. Wish I could be youthful and ignorant to life’s hard truths again. Not only did he back Linda Ronstadt (her background vocals on second verse), but he also wrote the Golden Girls song, Thank You for Being a Friend....he also co-wrote many songs you are all familiar with too. Just a brilliant musician!
The 70s good or bad it was still better than current times without doubt.
Wish I could turn back the clock to these times, 1975 17 again

Gold’s voice, his piano, the lyrics-and of course the buildup to his final high note-truly make my heart soar. That’s what really great music should do for you, it should move your heart and soul, or make you jump up to dance or even make you weep. Andrew Gold was pure gold.
He moves my heart..Never let her slip her away..confirms it.

Andrew's father composed the soundtrack to "Exodus," an unforgettable piece of work. I am sure Andrew learned a lot from his father. Andrew was cut down at age 59 by heart problems. This was a tragic loss to the music community.
Certainly a very sad day. Extraordinary talent. RIP

The 1970’s were the best. Totally different decade and totally different music compared to these days.
Andrew Gold is like Alan Parsons, Alan Oday, Albert Hammond. Much more behind the scenes. Hidden talent that’s a lot of people don’t see.
Checkout Art's Breakaway album. Andrew is all over it.
Peter McCann might have been the same.
Someone from 2020 listening is wonderful music.
Brings back to the time when everything was cool and life was free and easy.
I can relate to this song so much as it tells my story. I sort of wonder if Andrew originally sung this about himself. Still touches me today and I am 59 now.
I can relate to it even more, I was born in 1951! Always loved this song.
According to Wikipedia, it's not autobiographical, despite 1951 being the year of his birth as well.
Can’t believe this song is over 40 years old! I’ll never get tired of listening to this. We miss you Andrew! Thanks for the music, and “thank you for being a friend”.

Me. He was a genius. What he did on You're No Good for Linda Ronstadt is amazing.
Who sings a middle eight verse through a guitar solo?? Only a frickin genius like Andrew Gold!
I wish I could give 2 thumbs up to this song
Thank you, Andrew, for "being a friend" to so many like Linda Ronstadt, Kenny Edwards, Wendy Waldman, Karla Bonhoff and to us, music lovers!
It kinda flashed Andrew's mother's creds a little quick there. She was Marni Nixon, who sang Natalie Wood's parts in West Side Story, Deborah Kerr's parts in The King and I, and most controversially, she provided the vocal parts of Eliza Doolittle for Audrey Hepburn, a role everyone thought should go to the original actress/singer, Julie Andrews. She was also one of the nuns singing about the Trouble With Maria in the movie version of The Sound of Music, and she sang Grandma Fa in Mulan. Andrew Gold played guitar and backup for Linda Ronstadt during her most active phase, providing the guitar solo and most of the other instruments on Linda's cover of You're No Good. And of course, his tune Thank You For Being a Friend was the theme song to The Golden Girls.
😲
Thank you for that, good to know!
You're awesome Thank You!!!!
Oh, damn! I definitely know who Marni was...
If only they didn't need her for the movie, and USED JULIE!!!

So true, it all sounds the same today! In the 70's we had singer-songwriter pop ballads like from Elton John and James Taylor, jazzy pop like Steely Dan, heavier rock like Boston and even Jazz like George Benson's Breezin and This Masquerade, plus instrumental hits.
