Modern Classic: Miami Vice

  • Truth be told this drink definitely falls into the category of "Club Cocktail." or "Vacation Drink." Miami's namesake cocktail is a mashup of a Strawberry Daiquiri (the blended kind that you'll find in TGI Friday's) and a Piña Colada. That doesn't mean that we can't enjoy them and since it was recently National Piña Colada day, It got my brain whirring on awesome (and balanced) reconstructions of this drink. The reconstruction in this video was developed by Gabriel Orta and Elad Zvi of Broken Shker in Miami Florida. For those of you who don't know Broken Shaker is the tiki facing award winning bar at the Top of the Freehand Hotel. There are a few of these bars now, we have one in Downtown Los Angeles and There's one in New York. They are all award winning programs and the drinks are wonderful so if any of you find yourselves in any of those cities, definitely check out those bars!
As for the history of this drink, I can't tell you too much about it as not much exists on it. I will say that these Vacation style cocktails were big in the 1980's and I am going to assume (until someone corrects me) that this one was created in maybe the late 1980's early 1990's. The Piña Colada itself was born, by most accounts, in 1954 at The Beachcomber's Bar at The Carib Hilton in Puerto Rico and the rise of blended daiquiris came about a tad beforehand in Cuba. But I am going to assume that this drink was named after the Miami Vice Show which premiered in 1984 and this is definitely something someone on that show would drink and Frozen Strawberry Daiquiris were invented around that same time. Ok enough ranting and conjecture, go make one!

Hey I know you've made a workhorse spirits video but I was hoping you could make a video about even more classic and good spirits but also talk about their flavor profiles and talk about some history cause that stuff is cool. I think you'd be awesome for making videos like that because no one on UA-cam or real life really tells you about those spirits that are super classic in the cocktail world (or you know just ones they like alot) but also they don't describe what it tastes like and what you might put it in. I'm just an aspiring home cocktail maker that wants to make good drinks, learn about where it came from, and pass on that stuff with the people I make drinks for and with. Thanks. Great channel btw. P.s. the videos are better when you forget something

60ml or 2oz of grappa (Italian vodka)
40ml or 1.10oz of Blood orange juice (Fresh)
15ml or 0.5oz of Lemon juice (Fresh)
