A few weeks ago I was looking for a drink to make on a Saturday night. All the usual suspects weren't intriguing. We had a little break in the rain for some warm weather and I wanted that tropical vibe... so I landed on The Tradewinds. I'd had it before but never this exact recipe.
It's not an obscure drink, but it doesn't get the love of the Mai Tai, Zombie, Jungle Bird, or Painkiller. To be clear, nothing deserves to be mentioned with the Mai Tai, but the Tradewinds should be up there with the others.
You can find the recipe in the Total Tiki App, Beachbum Berry Remixed, and Smuggler's Cove. Links to the books are below and the recipe is at the very bottom of the description.

📝 Recipe(s) 📝
1 oz lemon juice
1/2 rich simple syrup
1 oz coconut milk
1 oz apricot liqueur (I'm using Rothman & Winter Orchard Apricot)
1 oz aged or dark rum (I'm using Appleton Estate 12)
1 oz lightly aged rum (I'm using Real McCoy 3)
Most rums will work here. No need to break out the expensive stuff as the 1 oz pour will get overwhelmed by the apricot and coconut.

This drink is the definition of balance. Every ingredient pops in it.
So impressed with this channel. You and Anders Erickson are now my two favorites. Your production quality and bar setup are hands down the best I’ve seen! Keep it up!
Dude your production value. Surprised your channel is still so small
UA-cam doesn’t reward production value they reward adhd stimulus
Everyone I've served that drink to has loved it.
This video was so well done, I’m so impressed, first vid I’ve seen from you and I’m hooked man. Good stuff.
BETTER than a Tradewinds and not a pain to make | The Painkiller (Pusser's optional). Derek, I see a series in the making ... good video.
I don’t think we’re allowed to use the “P” word or they’ll come for us!!
@@makeanddrink i doubt it, greg from how to drink did his with plantation :)
If you want to add more banana flavours into this drink then use Cross&Smith rum.
It really do have that funky sweet banana flavours in it.
I do love how you're covering tiki's because I know very little about that style in general, keep it up! Loving it!
My favourite in smugglers cove. Almost always use gosling black seal rum as the dark rum. Sets the tone
Just subscribed. So informative and interesting. Thanks for the educational videos.
Hi Derek ! Love your channel. I tried this drink recently at your recommendation. It's now one of my favorites ! I modified my recipe a little. I deleted simple syrup and replaced coconut milk with 1/2 oz Coconut Rum ( the original recipe was too sweet for me) The tweaked version hit the spot !!
I appreciate the video quality and your desire to dig into the history of the drinks. Thanks for your excellent work !!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it
I found this recipe in Smuggler’s Cove and have loved introducing my friends to it. Absolutely one of my favorite tiki drinks! Thanks so much for this video!
Great video once again!
I like the adjustment to make this easy to make for 1 or 2 drinks. Great idea.
Hey man I just discovered you last week and you’re channel is absolutely fire🔥 Keep up the quality content and I’m waiting till you explode on here!
Thank you!
I made the Tradewinds after watching this episode and it was great! I love Painkillers and this is very similar yet more interesting.
I love these videos! Tiki drinks are my favorite. Keep it up!!
Thank you! Will do!
Great production value and well made ! Good luck 👍
Thank you!
Great video!
Thank you!
I've heard about this drink a few times but never had the apricot liqueur to give it a go. Went to grab a bottle and struck out, but I did find Giffard's Creme de Peche which I decided would be a decent enough sub. Quite tasty. Glad I found the channel and glad you finally pushed me to give this one a try.
I bet the Giffard Peach would taste amazing. Pretty much all of their liqueurs are great. Thanks for the feedback
I like that fruit element
Watched this one for the third time. Didn’t like my first Tradewinds until I changed my rum blend to 5 year Barbados and 12 year Demerara
By far my favorite tiki drink ive had. Friend made me one about two years ago and immediately fell in love with it. Most people ive talked to have never heard of a Tradewinds. I just tell them "you're missing out!!" 😅
Thank you!! 😎❤
Ah yes, another one of the liqueurs that I can't find here. LOL! I've tried this once by swapping the Apricot Liqueur for Apricot syrup that I made. Thought it turned out great but I'd like to try the actual recipe. Add another liqueur to my list to make! Great video as always! Cheers!
That’s sounds like a perfect excuse to use whatever liqueur you have on hand!
❤❤❤
Just made a tradewinds with Coruba and Probitas. Quite amazing.
Yes!
I have gallons of ume shu (Japanese plum wine). Ume is technically an apricot. So... I bet this would work...
Just coming across your channel through the Mai Tai series. So fun! Now I'm going back in time to check out older posts. I really dig what you're doing. Is the glass you used for the Tradewinds something that can be found? If so I'd love to know where you picked it up. Cheers!
Thank you! The tall blue glass is the Trader Vic's E'Ville glass which is their Zombie glass. You can buy those online as well.
2:25 that lemon looks very orange :)
Probably a Meyer lemon.
Could you please tell me where you got your hand juicer. Thanks!
Another great video, yours are the best.

Another great video! Video quality is really impressive. Do you use coconut milk or cream of coconut for this cocktail?
Thanks! This is coconut milk, however coconut milk + simple syrup is essentially "cream of coconut."
what about using cream of coconut (not the same as coconut cream either)? I've only ever seen that being used in all cocktails
“Cream of coconut” is basically a coconut milk with added sugar and stabilizers. Coco Lopez or Real brand mainly. “Coconut Cream” is coconut milk with a higher fat %
Ok hear me out. Somehow add a peanut butter taste to the banana version. Maybe a roasted peanut orgeat.
I wonder what kind of cheap immersion blender would do the trick instead.
DrinkMasters are great because they are essentially very inefficient blenders. They don’t break down the ice like a blender and they add a lot of foam.
I would love to grab a bottle of Giffard Banana liqueur but my local TotalWine does not carry them. They only have Tempus Fugit banana liqueur which is awesome but it tastes different than Giffard.
Would be interested to see what Drillaud tastes like compared Giffard.
@@makeanddrink Yes! I had a bottle of Drillaud Apricot liqueur and it's delicious. Makes me wonder if their banana or elderflower liqueur is equally good or not lol.
could i use dissarono instead of apricot liquer? is it similar?
They won’t be similar. Disaronno is nut based and tastes like almond extract where the apricot is a pure sweet fruit flavor. If you were going to try something else, a peach liqueur would be closest but most fruit liqueur would work well.
I bet this would be good with lychee liqueur
would it be wierd to use appleton signature and appleton 12 here for this?
Nah, go for it!
I'm still confused about the coconut milk - you talk about reducing the size in the recipe if you don't want to make 27 oz of the stuff; can you clarify if something like Coconut Real is a substitute, or if you really have to buy a can of coconut milk and mix it with simple syrup?
Yes you can use that as a substitute
How does the Giffard compare to tempus fugit banana?
Couldn’t tell you. I’ve had it in cocktails but not on its own. My assumption is it’s more of that carmelized banana, which I’m sure is delicious as well.
Can't use coco lopez in this?
Yes you can
Broo whattttttt
