It was sloppy soldering. But Its tough cause there is a lot of custom PCBs that make ti all work and overall I think the design is solid. But It needs like a better QA cleanup. Its like they just kind of got to the finish line and sat down before crossing it on this one. The overall form factor and design and parts all seem good. But....why not finish it. Fun fact: The joystick issue with NBA Street has been baffling me for years. On my first fat PS2, you could not move up and left at the same time using analog. Your player would stop in place. I changed controllers and got the same problem. On my slim PS2, oddly enough, the problem seemed gone. Last year, on my jailbroken PS3 with software emulation, the problem returned with a vengeance. I have no idea what is causing this, but it even reoccurred in the Xbox version of NBA Street 3. This is the first time I’ve ever seen another person say this out loud. Interesting!

For $400, I was expecting a nice non 3D- Printed console. I guess I can let the 3D-Print go but after seeing the issues, I don't think it's worth $400.
Just so people are aware - if you’re getting a portable console like this commissioned by someone in the modding community, you’ll most likely be shelling out well over $1,000. A ton of time goes into making a custom portable. This one is cheaper because it seems that they have some sort of small assembly line for these lol. $450 is definitely reasonable (if it didn’t have the solder issue)
I doubt these custom-made handhelds would last for long. Besides, with the explosion of new handhelds left and right, that pack enough power to run PS2 and beyond, I don't get why someone would pay more for something sub-par like these custom made units.
For that price point, considering all of the issues, a better option for most people would be to get a steam deck, duel boot with windows, and run a PS2 emulator. This Portable PS2 is a cool system, but just seems to have too many issues to justify the price

I remember watching another person review this same unit and it was even more a mess than pictured here. It isn't even that bad when comparing it to other homemade portable console mods but when you take something like this that takes a lot of hands on effort and try to sell it as a mass produced product you naturally get tons of quality control issues. There's a reason why people who make modded portable consoles rarely sell them and when they do they charge more than double than what this costs.
Not a random voltage, 8,4 is the voltage of fully charged two li-ion cells. It's cheaper that way, than making it 9v and adding some regulators to finally make it 8,4 anyway.

dunno if I'd pay so so much for a modified PS2, but this is still really really cool. I dig this idea, just wish it didn't cost so so much. I'd be tempted to make one instead for cheaper, but I don't own a 3D printer nor the materials required to 3D print
That is an odd configuration, what voltage does the PS2 actually require when it is stepped down to the original console? I only say odd due to possible uneven drain from a dual series and dual parallel capacity running together. Then again, they look like they recycled the batteries from another device, the wraps are quite torn up on the right side.
I kind of dig it, 3D printed case is a good thing imo because its better than something that got dremel work done on it or whatever, good screen but needs better quality control. For the amount of custom parts in it the price isnt that crazy in my opinion, i wouldnt buy it but its not a bad price. expensive, yes but.... i mean its a portable PS2 with original mainboard in it.
Right, its almost perfect except the QA pass. Like they almost cross the finish line. If they fix those things, they could charge more for these things.
With how chunky the thing already is, would have been awesome if they made it a little bit thicker so you could slot in a sata ssd. Using usb is not ideal for the ps2.
Hard to choose a favorite game because the console had so many amazing games. Kingdom Hearts, Onimusha, Test Drive Eve of Destruction, ATV Off-road Fury, Silent Hill, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, Spider-Man just to name a few.
Maybe if you remove the board from the upper shell, you can sort the d-pad issue out. Most likely just got too much flex on the board itself and needs reinforced. Looks cool though, would be cool to see someone build one of these.
Just a quick FYI: As far as I know no game in the Tekken series supports analog during the main fighting game portion (Though some side games like Devil Within from 5 did allow analog controll)
I started with Tekken 6 on PSP, and as far as I remember analog has been supported at least since then. I really don't know about the PS2 games, but it is definitely supported in the most recent ones.
@@iinkshade Recently I played Tekken Tag 2 on Xbox and I can assure you analog is NOT supported. Which instantly made the game worse having to use that shitty d-pad. They may have supported it with 7, and maybe 6, but why would 6 gain it, and then Tag Torun 2 drop it?
@@UnbornDecay I just pulled out my instruction manual from my Tag Tournament 2 PS3 case right now, and it says analog is supported on page 2. I even checked on my ps3 and analog definitely works there. It's turned off by default, but all you have to do is go into the settings and turn it on. Idk if it just an Xbox thing or what, but I doubt it. Pretty sure you just missed the setting. I would check Tekken 6 for you too, but I don't have it anymore.
It's incredible that enough people bought this device to have made it worthwhile to produce. Especially since even a modern smartphone can easily emulate PS2 games.
"Easily emulate PS2 games" is something of a statement modern smartphones and even high end PCs still find trouble. Some games still have audio issues, visual glitches stuttering and fps issues, all of those could only be fixed with certain BIOS and plugins.
I think instead of making a replica ps vita, if they just slapped a ps2 with a screen and sold it along side a controller as a bundle, it would work better. Can even allow for 2 player functionality.
Drakengard is my favorite PS2 game. It's a dark medieval fantasy eldritch horror JRPG. It's a tad jank and super niche but one of it's sequels "NieR Automata" got some mainstream success. And honestly Yoko Taro's genius shines through. I really hope we someday get a port of it to steam and newer consoles because it costs too much for the average person to justify on it, and while piracy is a solution it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
@@MxGRhythmlModsMusicGamingl Based on Drakengard, known in Japan as Drag-On Dragoon, is a series of action role-playing video games created by Yoko Taro. The eponymous first game in the series was released in 2003 on the PlayStation 2, and has since been followed by a sequel, a prequel and several spin-offs. A spin-off series titled Nier, taking place in an alternative timeline set after a different ending to the first Drakengard than the one 2005's Drakengard 2 followed, was started in 2010 with the eponymous game.
@@YOSEPHALLEN92 Comparing to the Nintendo Switch, the Steam Deck is quite big (every UA-camr has compared those two already plenty of times) so comparing this device (in the video) would be nice to compare to the Steam Deck.
I wish they would add some more attention to detail. If this was mine I would check all solder points again and all pins just to make sure it's all good. I would also sand the case down and give it a glossy paint finish so it does not look so 3d printery.
Tough to paint a surface you're going to be holding for extended times, since the oils, sweat and heat in your hands will usually melt most paints. It'd be interesting to see how much of a buff shine you could work into the printed medium WITHOUT paint...
One thing that was great about the PS2 controller was that almost all the buttons were pressure sensitive, which was very useful, especially for racing games. I'm guessing these are not?
Nearly all PS2 racing games allow you to use the right stick for gas/brake, so this wouldn't be a huge issue. I think I like the buttons slightly better, but I switch back and forth a lot. Ace Combat on the other hand really took advantage of the pressure sensitive buttons, utilizing 6 out of 8 for that function.
with a 3D Printer, or even with a 3D Printing service, it shouldn't cost more than 200$ in terms of parts. and i'm guessing it shouldn't take more than a few hours to make. honestly this video made me want to build one myself so.... thank you for a good weekend project suggestion Jacob
The d-pad and button pcb boards were held in with two screws each. I wonder if adding the other two screws to the d-pad supports would alleviate the need press button hard.
Not gonna lie, the console looks not too bad. Maybe the seller or whoever made it should at least have a sd card cover on the top like the nintendo switch so that way you can open it and close it with your fingernail or make it look more like the og ds's card slot.
A lot of folk here saying stuff like "with that price you could buy a steam deck or a PS4 or vita or whatever" to argue about the price are all assuming the dude just wants to play some PS2 games in any way or form, ignoring that that wasn't the point. Dude wanted a portable PS2 mod with original hardware, and he obviously knows that's not the cheapest way one can play those games. Custom work is always more expensive than mass-produced products (tough you can argue if the final product was worth the price by itself)
The board that was "flopping around" looked to be a memory card. That modder should have added kapton tape around it (seemed destine for another short). It honestly doesn't look bad. I know I wouldn't buy it though. And my favorite game on PS2 is Tekken 5.
V7 probably means it's the 7th version. Looks like a good portable with the only downside being that it was made in China and used crappy d-pad and analog stick. If you could modify it just sacrifice a PS2 controller and replace all those buttons and d-pad on the handheld with the ones from the PS2 controller.
Exactly what I thought. Just replace the crappy control boards with parts taken from an original controller, and once you got them tuned in properly, control should be near normal...
This is one of those "genius" ideas I had after I got a 3D printer. I thought "Wow this could make it so much easier for people who do those portable consoles!"... And then you look it up and it's been done to death. I'm so interested in the idea of making my own.
I was debating getting this kind of handheld but then I saw KH3 on a Steam Deck and decided I wanted the Deck. I want a handheld that can play PS2 games but if it can run that and more I see no reason to not pay the $100+ more.
yea the steam deck is amazing. just got it and it blows my mind as its like an emulator everything plus modern games i want to play off steam. also feels incredibly comfortable in the hands. emulation statio and emudeck are must haves too, Im enjoying shadow hearts ps2 on it rn
I just got my Steam Deck, highly recommend it. It's a full PC so you can even install Windows and emulators on it if you want, but I'm enjoying the Linux OS they made for it and my backlog of Steam games. My favorite part is the hardware support tho, it's phenomenal compared to these no-name Chinese handhelds: Valve has already said they will be selling official spare parts for it to replace on your own, and they have their own teardown videos for replacing joysticks. That alone shows me they intend to support it for a very long time.
That was ... interesting :) It's a bit shame, because it seems that, it lacked some "finishing" touch. If he / they tested the device, then probably you wouldn't have to open it. Also, they could fix the D-pad. On the other hand, like you mentioned the soldering seems a bit amateur. But overall, like i said - it's ... interesting :)
It’s not always about the graphics for some people. I want this because I actually like certain ps2 games and playing them on a ps2/3 or emulator is the only option. Some people also like these sorts of diy portable units of retro systems.
The size isn't to much of an issue for me, I have a "Hyperkin Superboy" for SNES games that's as big and a "Gamerz Tek 8-Bit Boy for NES games that's even bigger + the cart. It does looks cool though but my issue is workmanship and price, thanks great Review.
"Looks at price." Yikes! The base model Steam Deck is cheaper than this. The only way this could possibly be worth it is if it was sold for under $200 as a DIY kit where you supply your own PS2 and install it in the case.
Using original hardware might be valuable to some people, but we're at the point where PS2 hardware can be emulated on something 1/100th the size, and with 1/100th the energy requirements (or better). You could make much better use of the space, and get better battery life. It's not for me, at least.
There were accessories that could essentially turn it portable. They made mobile monitors with car adapters and the one I had also had a wall power supply to. I think it still works. I had a wireless ps2 controller from sony. I still have the mobile monitor for both the phat and slim ps2’s. This psvita style portable is awesome
Per your request: I'd say my favorite PS2 game was probably Blood Omen 2 from the Legacy of Kain series, or the sequel; Soul Reaver. BO2 was great once you've unlocked a couple of vampiric powers...especially the Jump power. There's just something about targeting an enemy (or victim) from long distance, then just leaping at full speed and slamming them to the ground, and using the mist form that just makes you feel like an actual bad-a$$ vampire, unlike so many other vampire games. My two cents.
@@GradeA0verA you are way overestimating the vita, it has the same 32-bit cpu as an iphone 4s and runs at around 350 mhz, which can be increased to 500 mhz (the graphics requirement for the PS3 is 550mhz) using lolicon but will severely damage the battery and vita overall, also the fact that the PS3's 64-bit CPU is way more powerful compare to the vita, so no you'll still need remote play
It seems as if the buttons are a bit chintzy. The real question becomes: do the face buttons preserve the analog switching mechanisms present in real PS2 controllers? If not that would make certain games that benefit from or even require this feature, such as The Bouncer (and possibly some niche aspects of MGS 2 & 3) nigh on unplayable. I think the presence or absence of the analog button mechanism would definitely factor into my decision-making process if I were to invest in this device vs a different portable system that could potentially run a PS2 emulator.
400$ ? Recently I've bought a two awesome wireless PS joysticks and HDMI-hub with tons of NES / SNES / PS 1 / PS 2 games in it for less than 30$. Man, you've just got robbed.
Definitely would not buy that but it is cool to know it exist. I cant imagine long play sessions holding that huge device. Id rather a device that can emulate ps2 thats streamlined.
I have one of these and love it for the most part. My only major gripe with it is that just like your left d pad button issue mine is with the O button which is extremely unfortunate with games that use it a lot :/ really have to push that button hard for it to register
This is pretty cool A while back you could buy ps2 with broken disk drive for next to nothing so that's probably what this came from I wonder if you can mod a sata laptop drive into it or use one of the sd card memory card adapter to get better performance
Steam deck is a better option. The PCSX2 emulation works better than OPL firmware on a original ps2 console. Also the quality of a deck is superior for the price.
Inside the console there seems to be the original seller information on taobao which is a Chinese exclusive market so it seems like this console was resold to you buy a middle man aka drop shipping which means you paid extra and it’s probably cheaper if you bought directly of of taobao check the seller to see what the original price was

dunno if I'd pay so so much for a modified PS2, but this is still really really cool. I dig this idea, just wish it didn't cost so so much. I'd be tempted to make one instead for cheaper, but I don't own a 3D printer nor the materials required to 3D print
This was an awesome video thank you. Cool to see the inside while you explained what was wrong in there. Subbed
Its probably 8.4V because the maximum charging voltage of a 18650 is 4.2V and 4.2 x 2 is 8.4 (obviously 2 in parallel and two in series)
Yeah it made more sense once I was snooping around inside the case with my multimeter and saw that the batteries were 4.2v
indeed each 2 pack is wired series to give 8.4v then the two 2s packs are wired in parallel to increase the capacity
@@moorhen6156
in reality its exactly the opposite of what you said. you messed up parallel and series.
@@Mounty2010 haha so I did my bad I'll edit that now lol
That is an odd configuration, what voltage does the PS2 actually require when it is stepped down to the original console?
I only say odd due to possible uneven drain from a dual series and dual parallel capacity running together.
Then again, they look like they recycled the batteries from another device, the wraps are quite torn up on the right side.
Man good for you. I used to live above you in a house in Mississippi(it burned down later, you know the one). 275k subs. Nice.
Would love a portable ps2 with a disc drive attached, but I’m pretty happy playing ps2 games on an emulator on my aya neo 😏😏
Yeah, for it to be running games off usb at this price point is kinda silly
Maybe even add a wifi card to run games from local computer/server.
@@lucassantossj at that point its a ps vita. Why do this? Increase the cost to include non ps2 features?

PS2V7: why is there a line at 4 inches??
@@UnbornDecay i guarantee you that its supported in tekken 7
Maybe buy a new controller
If this was in the late 80s- late 90s, they would buy this in a heartbeat
You know, I'm actually kind of wanting one of these now lol
It's incredible that enough people bought this device to have made it worthwhile to produce. Especially since even a modern smartphone can easily emulate PS2 games.
If you click on the aliexpress link from the video description it says that it has 5 total orders... So it's not such a mass production going on
You need at least 500k Antutu score to comfortably emulate light and medium titles. 1 million Antutu score is enough for anything
that's crazy to think about, mine can barely run ppsspp
"Easily emulate PS2 games" is something of a statement modern smartphones and even high end PCs still find trouble. Some games still have audio issues, visual glitches stuttering and fps issues, all of those could only be fixed with certain BIOS and plugins.
Problem is, you need a high end performance phone to actually run ps2 games smoothly
So we wasn’t getting sussed out huh
I think instead of making a replica ps vita, if they just slapped a ps2 with a screen and sold it along side a controller as a bundle, it would work better. Can even allow for 2 player functionality.
Whatcha talkin bout, Willis!
Based.
@@horodoomwolf based? based on what?
I was unaware NieR was related to Drakengard..
Look at the big timeline of Yoko taro games it's kinda ridiculous with books and STAGE PLAYS in the middle of it
That poj costs as much as a dang PS5! 😳
It would be nice to compare this to a Steam Deck just for size comparison since both are big handhelds.
Steam deck isn't that big. It's very slim
IT'S 2022! WHY US IT SO DIFFICULT TO CREATE A PORTABLE PS2 THAT ACTUALLY FUNCTIONCS BETTER THAN THE SYSTEM ITSELF?!
Would be very cool if we ever see a portable PS3. (if that's possible to make tho)
Probably possible, just very large and would be difficult to cool it
PSP pretty much what your talking about
i think its draw too much power and because of that, the cooling system is a problem too
I would love that
@@rykerz105 noo, a legit console that reads ps3 games. PSP has its games ported
@@scottthewaterwarrior that's pretty cool, I never knew that. I always wanted to play Ace Combat but never got around to doing it
He’s right 2 inches is giant. No body needs THAT much ps2 handheld depth.
with a 3D Printer, or even with a 3D Printing service, it shouldn't cost more than 200$ in terms of parts.
and i'm guessing it shouldn't take more than a few hours to make.
honestly this video made me want to build one myself so.... thank you for a good weekend project suggestion Jacob
Shipping and assembly cost money
The d-pad and button pcb boards were held in with two screws each. I wonder if adding the other two screws to the d-pad supports would alleviate the need press button hard.
A very neat thing, but the debris is a dissapointment.
You can change the aspect ratio to 4x3 in the display options where the brightness, contrast, and other output options appear.
Or you can change the PS2 output in the main menu to output 16:9. It's always had that ability.
The board that was "flopping around" looked to be a memory card. That modder should have added kapton tape around it (seemed destine for another short).
It honestly doesn't look bad. I know I wouldn't buy it though.
And my favorite game on PS2 is Tekken 5.
Kapton tape is expensive. They have to cut corners somewhere.
@@tomc8157 yeah a product shorting out because of cut costs is flat out unacceptable and not worth buying.
how do you buy something from aliexpress for $400+ 😂💀
V7 probably means it's the 7th version.
This is what is supported by many..technicalities and brands that also enjoy doing.. many certainties and very good remarks. Including certs.
@@generaldirection5123 GetMyDeck is telling me I'm 7.2% the way there. The wait is gonna suck.
weird they didn't do the sd card mod for this. would of had better compatibility.
For $400 you can get a Steam Deck that can play all PC games and emulate PS2 games for free
Yeah, was thinking the same when he said 400. I thought it was gunna be 200 max
I would not paid more than 55$ including shipping and taxes
that wouldn't cover the 3D printed custom case alone....
Lmao right! Bro paid 400 to play scooby doo and tekken 4 on the go.
For the price i rather buy a psvita much better graphics
It’s not always about the graphics for some people. I want this because I actually like certain ps2 games and playing them on a ps2/3 or emulator is the only option. Some people also like these sorts of diy portable units of retro systems.
a vita won't run ps2 games, which IS the point....
The creators of this custom PS2 is getting there. More refine and lighter version and it will be great.
The size isn't to much of an issue for me, I have a "Hyperkin Superboy" for SNES games that's as big and a "Gamerz Tek 8-Bit Boy for NES games that's even bigger + the cart. It does looks cool though but my issue is workmanship and price, thanks great Review.
Damn the internals of this were sus. I just did my first custom SP and had no soldering experience. This looked like my first attempt lmao.
Jacob "You probably cant tell how big this is"
Me: Dude, it looks like you have baby hands......
"Looks at price." Yikes! The base model Steam Deck is cheaper than this. The only way this could possibly be worth it is if it was sold for under $200 as a DIY kit where you supply your own PS2 and install it in the case.
That literally just looks like a PS Vita 😂
Yeah very similar in shape and to me by the chunkiness it reminds me of having a case that is also a portable ps2
Facts but I was surprised how big it is next to an actual PS Vita
Lmfao I kept laughing after the blushing from the ps2 specially when you kept measuring it and saying wow this is huge….
Using original hardware might be valuable to some people, but we're at the point where PS2 hardware can be emulated on something 1/100th the size, and with 1/100th the energy requirements (or better). You could make much better use of the space, and get better battery life. It's not for me, at least.
The joystick is what a psp needs, even though it will make it thicker but it will be a huge upgrade rather than that crappy joystick
It is worth it for $450? I don't think so
Ayyy Scooby-Doo Unmasked is GOAT man. Nostalgia kicks in.

@@GradeA0verA heck, it can't even natively run ps2

Not for me. Not a fan of touchscreen controls for video games.
It only has 3 hour charge too
I have one of these and love it for the most part. My only major gripe with it is that just like your left d pad button issue mine is with the O button which is extremely unfortunate with games that use it a lot :/ really have to push that button hard for it to register
8,4V is not random, it's stock. The 'custom chip' is a normal memory card with freemcboot.
This is pretty cool
A while back you could buy ps2 with broken disk drive for next to nothing so that's probably what this came from
I wonder if you can mod a sata laptop drive into it or use one of the sd card memory card adapter to get better performance
Steam deck is a better option. The PCSX2 emulation works better than OPL firmware on a original ps2 console. Also the quality of a deck is superior for the price.
