Hello @RomeWise …. We are here now and will be here until 3/17….. we were here 2 years ago at this same time. This is our favorite time of year to come. We love your videos!
We went first week of January. Awesome time to go. Holiday decorations are still fully lit and low crowds. Tour guides were amazed at how “small” the crowds were. Easy to get restaurants, cheaper hotels and airfare, and the weather was sunny and 60s/40s.
Wife and I leaving on the 23rd for 2 weeks in Rome, and wanted to thank you for all of the info you provide. Made our trip planning so much easier and educated. Were so excited!
Love visiting Rome in Feb. Visited Pompeii and it was nice. Stayed in an Air B/B the Monti area and loved it Made regular visits to Conad for Groceries. Highly recommend Feb if schedule permits. Early Spring it gets crowded for sure. Thanks for all you do. Tourism department should hire you. You have great info on this beutiful country and its cities/regions.
I will be going to Rome in mid-March for 1 week and have been watching your videos. Great tips ! Although I'm wondering how cold is it in March, since I am from a tropical country. Also decided to split Vatican Musuem/Sistine Chapel 1 day, and then St Peter's basilica and dome on another day. Hope that all turns out well when I'm there ! ❤🙏
I was in Rome last week , your advice was very helpful. Maybe I was lucky , but the weather was fantastic (27-30th Jan.) , sunny and warm. For those eager to visit Rome - February is a great time to do this🙂
Yes you were lucky but you are also right - winter is a GREAT time to visit Rome - manageable weather and much smaller crowds! Glad you had a great time.
Went to Rome in January-thanks a lot Elyssa for your videos-I saw churches and other museums that i would probably have missed. Best videos about Rome!
See you later this month! All of your Rome and Florence videos have been instrumental in ensuring we make the most of our first family trip to Italy!! Please keep them coming for future trips!! Also, if I see you out and about, expect a hello and my deepest gratitude!!
So glad to hear it! I hope you and your family will have a wonderful trip to Italy this month! If you do see me, please feel free to stop by and say hi :)
That's great! Winter is really the best time to visit and sight-see in Rome. Glad you got to see Saint Peter's Tomb - a very special experience indeed!
Congrats on having over 50,000 subscribers! You’ve long passed from fame into the realm of legend. I loved walking the outline of the ancient Circus Maximus track. Your Sunday videos are a highlight of the week. Thank you! You’ll no doubt soon have over 100,000 subscribers!
Great video! My husband and I visited in February last year and it was amazing! We went to the Vatican Museums around 4 one weekday evening and at one point we were two of only ten people in the room with the School of Athens. Incredible.
Just arrived home from Rome. Plenty of tour groups and tourists in general are definitely arriving close to opening times at the different attractions. Make sure to arrive as the places open so you can have that 30 minutes to an hour window of reprieve before the crowds rush in.
Thank you so much for the video! I will be flying to Rome in 3 days, and I'm super excited. I have already watched a couple of your videos, and they are really helpful.
Am really enjoying your videos as I prepare for three weeks in Italy March 4th to 23rd - a week in Rome and the balance in Salerno area. From a weather (clothing) preparedness standpoint, I think it’s important visitors consider their own situations. For example, if you live in a cold climate like I do (on an island in the North Atlantic), then March in Rome will seem warmer than it would to a visitor who lives in a warmer climate. For me, it will seem more like May or early June and, quite frankly, I’m here for it! Or rather, I will be there for it 😎
Hi, have been in Venezia for 5 days, now in Bologna. Firenze and Siena to follow, then will be in Roma from 15th to 27th February before heading home to Australia. Love your videos.
We'll be there a week from today for two weeks in Rome and Florence. This is really good information. This being a Jubilee year might also affect the crowds in February.
We will be there 15 Feb - 22 Feb, but the Pope denied our request for a visit at Peter's tomb. He said they were full during that time. However, I am very excited to try your passeggiata from the Spanish steps, Villa Borghese, Pincio, Piazza del Popolo, and Via Margutta on our first day!
Many of the third party tour sites buy tickets to the Scavi. It is about 10x more expensive than going straight through the Vatican but we choose to do it that way just because we don’t believe we will ever go back. Our guide also gave us a tour of St. Peter’s afterward. We have paid a LOT more for a lot less on cruise excursions.
Thanks for watching. The pope is not the one who oversees visits to the tomb of Saint Peter. If there are no visits available, you can try booking through a third party, as Julie noted in her comment, or you can visit other holy sites associated with Saint Peter, like the Mamertine Prison, Saint Peter in Chains, and St. John in Lateran.
Thanks for another great video. Please make a comprehensive video on Capitoline Museums. There were such great paintings, busts and statues in that Museum, i think it will help alot if people know just a bit more about the exhibits inside before going there.
Thank you! We’re heading your way this month. Your information has been priceless. What restaurant should we not miss outside of Rome? We are staying near the Via Appia Antica area. Thank you again!
Thanks so much! All my best dining tips are on my website. You can start here: www.romewise.com/places-to-eat-in-rome.html That said, I don't really have a specific place to recommend outside of Rome on the Appia Antica. You may wish to ask your hosts or hotel concierge where they suggest.
I’m going in the first week of March and so I would imagine it won’t be too different. I’d love to go to an opera there but it all looks completely booked up!
Stay tuned, I plan to publish an updated Rome in March video at the beginning of March. I'm not sure which opera you want to see. You may find more options, including reseller tickets, on my page here: www.romewise.com/rome-concerts.html
That's great! I'm sure you will have a fabulous time at the match. I suggest using public transportation to get to the Stadio Olimpico. Taxis will be hard to come by. You can use Google maps and choose the pubic transportation option. Google is connected to Rome's ATAC system. Otherwise, you could download Moovit, which is the app I use. Both work fine!
Thanks for the video! I’ll be at Rome next weekend and planning to watch the Pope’s blessing on Sunday. I also would like to visit the Basilica’s Dome before or after it, do you think it will be open?
Thank you! Sure, I take the bus often - I'm not sure what you mean about secure. If you are worried about pickpockets, please do not allow fear-mongering on the internet take away from enjoying your trip. As you would in any big city, be aware of your surroundings, and use common sense when in big crowds. Have a great visit!
Perfect! This video is just what me and my girlfriend needs before visiting Rome. We're going the first week of march. What would you say the temperature stays around? (celsius)
Thanks for watching! Stay tuned, because I'll also have a new video for Rome in March coming out right at the beginning of next month. Careful - March is still a winter month and may be colder than you might think. Pack for winter and for rain, and plan to layer. Have a great time!
I want to see the Sistine Chapel in February! Is it better to do it at the first available hour or the last? Also, are the official guided tours worth it? Or would we just rush through stuff anyway?
When you visit the Vatican Museums, my advice is to see the Sistine Chapel first thing or at the very end for experiencing it with the smallest crowds. Either time is good, it just depends on your schedule and also if you are a morning person or not. This is true whether you visit on your own or with a tour. I am a big fan of tours, especially if it's your first visit, as there is so much to know. Most tours take about 2 hours. If you take the shortcut into Saint Peter's Basilica with your tour, then you cannot go back and spend more time in the museums after the Sistine Chapel. But if your tour ends in the Sistine Chapel, you could in theory go back and take your time in the museums. It's really up to you and what your priorities are.
Circus Maximus is not very popular amongst the tourists 🏇🏇🏇🏇 I was there in July and there were only 3 people on the ground, including me 🐎🐎🐎🐎 Even when the Hop-on Hop-off bus stops at Circus Maximus, hardly anyone gets off 🚌
It's true, it's not that popular as a destination for tourists, although there is something to visit in Circus Maximus itself. But we locals love it as a park and place to exercise and get fresh air. It also has beautiful views of the Palatine Hill!
@Romewise I've seen the Circus Maximus view from Palestine Hill 🏤 I can't believe that stadium could fit 120,000 spectators and it was built in the BC days (not AD days like the Colloseum) 😲
I arrive in rome in 9 days, I am so ready for it, to take in all the history and go to most all museums but I come from australia so i think i might die of the cold
È piuttosto difficile morire di freddo a Roma !!! È vero che qui adesso è inverno, cioè la stagione più fredda dell' anno ma ci potrebbero essere intorno ai 15 gradi e anche di più .
I think you will be pleasantly surprised - it's not arctic cold, just chilly. Temps do drop at night but come prepared. A hat, scarf, and gloves go a long way towards staying warm and comfortable. Have a great visit!

Just back from Rome yesterday, it was amazing! And much better than my first visit in June, 3 years ago. ❤️
