Relocating the radiator to the bed, quick mock-up to get the cooling system ready. Fire up is close!

  • This beast will soon make fire!!! But before it does, I need to be sure it'll dissipate the heat and not melt the pistons! I put the radiator into the bed of my 1957 chevy pickup, and scrounge up some used pieces of radiator hose and exhaust pipe, and cobble together a very temporary cooling system, and fill it with water directly from the tap.
I will be permanently mounting the rad in the bed and it will look much cleaner than this, but it'll work just fine for the first fire up.

Good choice on the Dr. Pepper & Cream Soda. Stuff's good!
(And if you're a drinkin' man, add in a little Crown Royal Vanilla......smoooooth!)

      It’s deadly stuff eh!
Actually on the topic, my wife bought be a bottle of crown royal peach for my birthday in march and I just finished it. What a great taste mixed with the Dr Pepper/cream soda.
      I’ll try the vanilla next!
I’m not a big drinker but I do enjoy sitting down to play some ps4 and have a glass of whiskey or rum

How did the radiator flow? Was the pump enough? Any suggestions?
    Thanks Bro, Love the truck!

      Hey man, thanks!
The radiator flowed amazing, and after figuring out an overheating issue (fans flow were reversed, my bad) I never had an issue with overheating, but a few issues otherwise
      Tips:
Bead roll the ends of every pipe where rubber hose will be clamped on. I didn’t have that done, and had a hose slip off at 150 kph and almost went in the ditch.
Make sure your fans are wired correctly so they flow in the appropriate direction. I found that the fans blowing up were better than trying to suck air from above
It was a real bitch to bleed the system because the radiator was so high in the back, so I had to pull the top hose off and fill the system until coolant came out of that hose and the rad. Then I had to connect the hose so that there was just a little opening at the top and fill it again.
After that I had to have the truck idling and pull the hose off the top AGAIN so that the water pump could circulate and any more air could escape.
It was a crazy week trying to figure it out but after I got through all the bugs, it was an amazing system. I could sit in a drive thru, idling for 10-15 minuites on a hot summer day with no issues.
