New RENOVATION PLANS For Our Railway Station Home

- Take a look at the new renovation plans for our 120 year old railway station as we turn it into our family home. How many bedrooms, bathrooms and surprises do we have in the renovation plans?
If you would like 3D images like the ones we have we used Ali on Fiverr www.fiverr.com/mianali270?sou...
I'm pleased with your discreet dormers that make the upstairs bedrooms possible without damaging the historic look of the station. Very clever! The family room extension is relatively unobtrusive, and it allows you to incorporate the outbuilding as part of your living spaces. Your guests will be greeted by an impressive reception room with soaring ceiling and a bridge!
The plans for the upper windows being at the second floor level harken back to Thomas Jefferson's early 19th Century renovation of Monticello, near Charlottesville, Virginia. He tucked two upper floors into what looks like a one story building. The second floor has the low upper portions of the tall windows, and the third floor has skylights with glass panes arranged like overlapping shingles to keep rainwater out. He also put a bridge over his entrance hall. Good luck with the renovation!
Yes, exactly. Those dormers are a very tasteful way to use the roof line.
This looks like a high class reno, making the most of what you have. Really glad to see you're recovering the outbuildings and incorporating them into the whole.
Ever think of a pond where the tracks used to be? Or a swimming pool?
The train station was very lucky to get you as owners.
Stained Glass for the Upper Windows; push that back to after the build is finished. With a wooden sashed window, you can install a normal wooden sash but have some brass screw inserts installed to allow you to mount a stained glass panel afterwards so it looks like its stained glass installed, and technically it is, but it has a protective plain (inexpensive to replace) glass exterior. The beauty of stained glass is light coming thru it, during the day the inside is bathed in color, and at night the lights project colorful images. Now here is what I've seen in old homes on Millionaires Row back home in Mobile that had these... You can remove the stained glass panels and replace them for seasonal decorations, or, to provide shading to the home interior as the sun's angle changes. Taking a class on Stained Glass is fun and they are easy to make. That way you can wait until after the home is built and, use your creative talents to create your own designs and change the panels for the seasons. It can help the budget, and after the home is built, you got a hobby for a while. Because all the windows appear about identical in size/measurement you should be able to create an easy pattern for the inset frames, and after that.... just need some workspace for a workbench. When its all said and done and you have a bunch of glass inset panels, wheeled cabinets with hammered felt lined slots to store the glass vertically, and a hammered felt and leather worktop helps to change out the panels. Now I only met a few houses that had that... and it may have been very local to my home town, but they did seem to change them out every 3 months...
Brilliant brilliant idea and details!!!!!!
Absolutely stunning! The respect you have shown to the historic nature of the station combined with really modern comfort -- fantastic. Wish you all the best!
Thank you! 😊
"... respect you have shown to the historic nature of the station..." this is questionable because so much of the valuable interior was cut up and vandalized. Perhaps this is why it is described as a renovation and not a restoration. The new plane look imaginative and I look forward to more videos.
Your plans sounds beautiful. The old station will be a showplace.
From what you show at: 10:02 I think the plans are stunning!! The restoration of that two story receiving room is almost perfect but I disagree with one point,. The location of that bridge that joins the bedrooms on the second floor cuts the great room below in two (length wise) and that takes so much away from the wow factor of that two story room that is the main jewel of the house. Extend the stair case landing toward the back wall, so the bridge is touching and running across that back wall (wall that goes to the back covered terrace) of the great room. That way the two story space is much more open and airy, looking much more like it did originally. From the drawing at : 10:02 it shows that there is still enough headroom to push the door to the master bedroom to the right , all the way to the corner with back wall, allowing the bridge to run along that back wall. As for the small second story windows on the back wall of the great room that are now looking on too the bridge walkway, you can still see the windows from the ground floor , and see the light coming from then through the bridge railings. Plus that dormer you put at the top of the back wall will still bring in a ton of light. Love the rest, great work & good luck!!!
Also makes it easier to clean windows on the inside, since the walkway is below them.
What a wonderful plan for the old station! I’m excited to see your vision unfold.
What a professional presentation. You have some impressive editing skills.
I agree, listening I was overwhelmed with excitement for you all. ❤
SketchUp. I assume done by the Architects.
Thank you so much for keeping the old Station so close to her old self. Fantastic plans. I’m so excited to see how this all goes.x
Thank you! 😊 🚂
I watched this again, to really appreciate wonderful way you are going to "restovate (restore & renovate) your future home. I thoroughly enjoy watching your progress.
Wow, thank you!
I can not wait to see the results of this renovation. This home is going to absolutely stunning !
It's wonderful how you will be keeping it Victorian and as original as possible.
As a "Back seat driver" here, 2 comments seeing your quick overview of the plans:
1) Be sure and consider what you may need to do for window treatment (blinds? curtains?) on that giant triangular window ASAP. That may slightly affect window decisions because as nice as a big open window seems, it can also be like living in a fish bowl where "the neighbors" can see in all the time. You do want the ability to cover that because you never know what development will surround you a few years down the road. 📶 A triangle like this (half shown) is MUCH easier to find a way to add window treatments for example.
2) It's not clear from what could be seen in video but it looks like clearance around the kitchen island may be a bit tight--at least take a second look because it's common for islands in real life to end up seeming much larger than they did on the plans. It can be like somebody parked a car-sized island right in the way of where you normally need to get through/around.
Yea, I know--it really isn't my business to play concern-troll and worry about your choices.
I love how you are keeping so much of the exterior looking like the original. It will be an amazing home.
That's going to be a beautiful home and in a lovely setting. Thanks for taking us on the journey with you.
Thank you for watching, we’re very grateful 😊
Such a thoughtful reno design. Blessings forward.
Love your Layout of your station
Wow, I love the mix of old and new! You're going to have a beautiful place to live when everything is complete, I can't wait to see it come together on here!!
That bridge feature in the upstairs is really intriguing!
Love these bridges but will be interesting to see the roof support in this area as the truss(es) are being removed.
It would be cool if the bridge was made with wrought iron work in keeping with the age of the building - so it sort of brought what might have been seen outside on the platforms inside…

The new plane is sensational! Really, really good, the dormers are such a good idea as is the bridge. I'm so excited for you all! XX
Excellent plans!! Thanks for taking us along.
You will be creating the best of the features of the old station, plus interior design for your family. Absolutely wonderful!
I love where this going and the plans look great - my two cents would be replace the front door elongated canopy and have a traditional station glass canopy between the two gable ends - theses entrance canopies were fairly common in the late 18th century and early 20th - good luck with the build
The plans are amazing!! Can't wait!
Love, love, love the plans!😍🥰
Thank you for this, I was so confused as to what you were going to do knowing you wanted those little windows back.
It looks like it's a good compromise between modern living and maintaining historical details.
Your plans look marvelous--can't wait to see the progress and finished home. How blessed you are to have this challenge and dream
Thank you! 😊 we know how lucky we are to have this opportunity (and challenge).
That bridging box linking the station to the outbuildings is so clever. I couldn't work out how you were going to have eno gh space for 3+ bedrooms
I was so excited when I saw the title, had to watch right then. It was so amazing, I'm watching again now, on the computer so I can stop it, have a better look and make comments along the way.
1st- O M G - it's so much different than I thought it would be. I'm so glad you kept as much as the original as possible.
2nd- I'm surprised you incorporated the out buildings as part of the main living areas, totally caught me off guard. I thought
the out buildings were going to storage, work shop, etc. fooled me, big time - it's pretty awesome.
3rd - I would frame the original floor plans and the new floor plans, display them in one of the living area, maybe the Grand Hall
Area, wonderful reminder and great pieces of art!
4th - The main great room, looks empty on the plans, will it be used like a living room or grand hall like castles used to have?
5th - The walk-way mezzanine is a very pleasant surprise, was not expecting that at all. I love how it's show cased and the
bedrooms separated to sides of the building. Wonderful design!
8th - Your girls must be thrilled with the plans for their bedrooms and their own bathroom, how wonderful.
You did a wonderful job on this video, showing all the details, great explanations, diagrams and related inserts, very nice!
Thank you so much ☺️
@@theoldstationrenovation - I'm still looking at them! I'm in ah, of how spectacular they are, utterly amazing.
That is going to look awsome when finished❤
Great plans! Very well thought out. I look forward to seeing the progress.
My only concern is a long walk to the guest bathroom for guests esp elders or littles
( Future proofing)
Yes, beautiful plans. But you may want to put a small bathroom on the first floor on the office/ Victorian side of the building. It does seem to be a ways to go to get to a bathroom from that side of th house. What lovely work you are doing. I love seeing the up into the roof. Beautiful old handy work.
Wow, new plans look amazing, so excited for you guys, cant wait to continue to see the transformation.
Hi. The plans for the building look great! So pleased you now have a way ahead. I am looking forward to seeing the progress.
Wow, just wow!
absolutely beautiful!
A really good blend of the original and modern.
Oh thank you so much showing what you are envisioning for this great station... now I'm very excited to be watching this evolution into a very pleasant and comfortable home!!! 😃
You’re very welcome! Thank you watching, we’re so grateful! 😊
This is a great plan. I love the joining together of the two buildings. I gather the squiggles are the lighting diagrams. It looks like you might be putting down lights in the lounge and study. To keep it Victorian, I would consider one main feature hanging light and then use lamps to fill out the rest of the needed light. Nothing worse than down lights to make a place feel 21st centruy.
Ignore the squiggles and light switches etc. They are not what will go in. Definitely no downlights.
This is very cool. Something to double check is that all the window glass and solar panels you put in, have access for cleaning inside and outside. A lot of times with modern designs, there are certain features that architects put in without realizing you will need a way of getting to the windows by ladder or pole, in order to maintain properly. Just from my experience as window cleaning business owner, hope it helps!
Love the plans!
Wonderful and thoughtful planning, retaining charm and history of the Old Station. May your efforts be blessed in fabulous ways moving forward!
Thank you! 😊
How exciting and wonderful!! It will be beautiful and also very functional for the way we live today!! Thanks for sharing all the details! 🥳☀️🧱🧱🧱
You’re welcome 😊. Thank you so much for watching, we’re very grateful!
I love what you have planned for your new home! I am also impressed with the 3-D video of the plans. It's funny how you will connect the bedrooms with the bridge landing as that thought was what I had in mind. Also, I hope you can put in stain glass windows in the arches as that, too, was what I thought would be period appropriate. I can't wait to see the final reveal. I would say you hired a good architect.
Thank you, Laura came up with the layout and the architect really did a great job putting it on paper for us, he’s been brilliant!
its going to look fab
Wow, your plans sound amazing. I look forward to seeing it come to life. Well done.
Wow.... that's going to look bloody amazing, so looking forward to seeing it happen ❤

Looks ok. Looking forward to see it happen!
Interesting project.
so exciting!!!
Congratulations! The plans really utilize the buildings in a wonderful way! The months and years ahead will be amazing! Thank you for sharing your journey!!!
Those plans are fantastic. the designer and or Architect are to be commended as well as you all for choosing to keep some of the Victorian styling.
I look forward to more episodes

Best Plan
Absolutely beautiful plans for your gorgeous old train station which will make an absolute comfortable family home. I look forward to seeing the transformation and can't wait to see you move into your stunning abode. What a massive achievement that will be!
Looks like a office complex
Impressive! I believe you will have an elegant home at the end of the project, whilst having maintained the integrity of the "Old Station".. Respect to you all for this mammoth undertaking.. Lots of work ahead, but believe it will be so worth it! Regards from South Africa
Very very nice design it will be great...can't wait to see it complete.
Wow didn't expect that, nice plans ,well it looks like your fans are going to follow you now for the next 18 months or so can't wait for the finished house, ENVIOUS, good luck....
Thank you very much 😊 I wouldn’t be surprised if this project rolls on for a couple of years!!
I like some others initially thought you had taken on a massive project but now we can really see the beautiful masterpiece you will create. Absolutely stunning. You should all be extremely proud.
Thank you! 😊
How fantastic, thanks
The plans are great love the way the old station will look for another 130 years!!!
Absolutely fabulous ❣️ Thank you for the tour.
Amazing plans, will be a beautiful. A lot of work, but you will get there.
I like the interior plans for the station and the upstairs is great! What i'm not particularly happy about; the connection to the side buildings -the roof is too low, the design is too modern. I know it's not grand designs, but if I was doing this, then the door would be in the connection wall of the two buildings, maybe with windows either side, mirroring the station window design. I would also remove the platform canopy at the back of the station and replace it with another period one, like the ones that are on many british stations with the cast iron pillars and glass roof (or a facsimile of one). I would extend that along to join the two buildings together. I think the rear canopy visually closes off the house too much and maybe change the window openings on the upper floor to be more sympathetic with the original design. Having said all of this, I don't know your budget or ambition, but it's fun to see what you make of it!
The final plan to take shape for restoration project is superb & splendid. Well done.. and to bring the icing on the cake…is the elegant charm to this entire project..is the blending in with Victorian and a classical charm to it. Good job and hats off to “all” of you. 🙏
Thank you very much! 😊
It’s look fantastic! 😮 x
Well done! A nice mix of keeping the Victorian bones and feel with some Grand Designs elements. I'm so happy that you are opening up the whole central room to the roof. The bridge, plus dropping the upper floor on both sides, is a great solution for making usable space upstairs. The open kitchen / dining space is also wonderful. I think that you biggest challenge will be to make the whole house feel as one. Things like the right trim and paint can really help. Otherwise it will feel like a modern home with a Victorian museum tacked on to one side. Given the plans so far I'm sure that you will pull it off. Looking forward to the start of the build!
The plans look fantastic!
Don't worry about the when and affordability of the stained glass. Inserts can be done after construction at any time and won't disrupt the finished windows.
There are several UK stained glass craftsman on YT. Maybe ask about a Collaboration?
Great idea, thanks! 😊
I think your architect has done well with the plans, particularly the link building joining it all up, however, please please look at the old photos and re-consider the rear canopy. Please think about cutting back the caopy the the external wall and replacing it with a new glass roof laid at a flatter pitch giving you much more headroom, it will fit better with the extension and secondly it will provide much more light into the rear of the station. I appreciate that it will be more expensive, but the look and feel would be much much better and more in keeping with the original.
Otherwise i love the concept and your hard work.
Thanks for the comment!
The canopy is the only part that doesn’t really fit in but I think with the window breaking up the angle change it will soften the effect. Also the space under the canopy is really handy especially since I’ve barbecuing. It’s a shame they took away the original iron canopy in the 50’s. It ran the full length of the back of the building. It’s heartbreaking to think it probably just went to scrap.
I am glad the tiny front "hall" from the prior owner will be opened up into the station hall. May need brick pillars for the lateral edges of the back overhang patio roof to prevent sag and give symmetry. Good job with the low dormer on the sides and back.
It will be a truly comfortable liveable space. What a terrific design.
Your plans look amazing
Going to look great
Love this!, so glad that front doors going, i wouldnt have been able to sleep at night knowing that was there
You and me both!
That's great news hope everything goes well for you looking forward to future episodes good luck regards Sam Woodward
Thanks Sam! 😊
.... very exciting!
Having the old bridge behind you looks lovely!
The garden is looking well after all of the work done to it.
Everything looks Like it's gonna be a great place, very nice architectural plans. I love it.
Wow i just love the plans for the renovation, keeping the old but adding some new bits and keeping within the look of the old.
It's a Fabolous Plan . The openplan room with double height ceiling will be Classic. The Old fireplaces when restored will be Wonderful. We did an extension many years ago and we incorporated an Antique Fireplace from my Grandaunt's Home. Its now run on gas and is a Wonderful Feature in our Home 🏡.
Good Luck 🍀 With All Your Renovations. You will have a Wonderful Family 👨👩👧 Home 🏡 when finished.
The room with the full height ceiling is going to be the centrepiece of the whole house. I love old fireplaces, and we have room for a few. It’s going to be an adventure searching for the right ones.
Thank you very much for watching 😊
IMHO changing pvc for wooden dors and windows- very good idea, but be careful with roof. Its old and adding new windows and new slope- danger of leaks. Anyway- good luck and we see how its go!
Thank you, we’re really keen to keep it traditional so going back to wood was always in our plans.
I’m happy to see the outbuildings put to use and the central part of the station opened up. I do think the powder room should be located in a more central location to make it easier to access from the lounge or study. Also, I probably would have placed the staircase in the center of the reception hall and connect it directly to the bridge to make it a focal point. That said, I’m sure your architect has a better understanding of the structure than me and came up with the most feasible design possible. I’m looking forward to seeing the final results.
I like, I like the idea. Can't wait to see the final stage 😍 🙌.
You are very clever and creative 👏. Regards from South Africa 🇿🇦.
Thank you so much and hi from south Wales 🏴 😊
OMG your architect is genius!
Love the plans! It will be fabulous 👏
Really enjoying following your journey with this project. Plans look great and look forward to seeing it all become reality, eventually. Good luck with it all 🚂
Thank you very much and thank you for watching! 😊
Very nice keeping most of the historic look with a modern twist. Well designed.
Love the design, i think your design is brilliant as it keeps the atmosphere of the old station but also extends it without it looking too different :)
Very impressive, definitely shows how much time and consideration has gone into keeping the original features and what can be adapted to bring it up to date for a modern feel. That staircase and walkway look awesome, and with the view to the east from the window.
It’s going to be gorgeous! ❤
