I have just found your channel. I love the way you say" we had lots of fun" when you are not digging. Sounds a lot like my first wife. By the way I am enjoying the progress. I have binged a few this evening. Cheers from Oz.
In just a couple of hours, a Bobcat can accomplish what hours upon hours of hard labor. Really not that expensive. You might ask at your local country store who in the community has a machine and operator for hire.
A genuine wooden railway sleeper is very very heavy and a pain to do anything with or even move. Cut down ones are more manageable and unused timber better in a garden. 40 years of oil and fuel (not forgetting human waste) soaked into timber is less than ideal. 😂
You might want to hire a landscaping company for the really heavy work. They have the equipment to make short work of those shrubs and overgrowth.....pick your battles:)
This is going to be a long term labour of love and you certainly have your work cut out! An old refurbished station near me actually refurbished the platform and trackbed and put a railway carriage in place including some wagons. Handy extra living space.
Wow, so cool!! I really hope you decide to keep the idea of a pond underneath that archway... maybe something where you could have water plants along the sides and a pump to keep it clean for you and even koi fish or something. Would be so lovely under that arch!
Came across your project and immediately subscribed. Love your short and to the point updates with shots of the outside when inside to give us orientation, and also that old photo from the bridge. You handle the camera, and tell the story well, interspersing with tantalising tasters. Totally jealous, being a keen DIYer. Please keep it going.
The platform edge will give you a good reference point for the old photos and a path for wet days. Suggest you now see if there is a hard surface from the edge back to the building. Some stations had gravel platforms but some had flagstones or tarmacadam. The videos are getting better, thanks.
I am really excited to be able to follow along. Your dogs are cracking my up! I know the feeling of trying to work and them wanting to play. I love history, and this is a wonderful thing you guys are doing. Best of luck!
Good news is you have only uncovered part of the platform and its edge. There will be something solid under the rest of the undergrowth probably 6-8 feet wide. The rest of the platform will stretch quite a way, possibly into another property (away from the bridge) if you are lucky more excavation could reveal a whole load of other railway treasure. The pond in the rail bed is a sign the drains (for the rail bed) have been blocked, usually these areas would drain very well. Depends how you want to play that one. The water is probably quite contaminated (oil, clinker heavy metals etc from deposits from its working days. There are various reeds that can clear a load of nasties (they use them on roadside ponds for same purpose) loving your videos 👍
Thanks very much for this comment. I’d never thought about drainage but makes sense now you’ve said it. We haven’t really had a good poke around in the pond yet, I’m looking forward to getting some waders on and going in! 👍
Honey, coming from the United States perspective, you need to rent an excavator just to clear where the tracks ran and for safetys and health sake, drain the pond. But after saying all that, boy have you guys picked a project together!! Good luck on everything 😊😊
Are those nettles I see? I like the comparison of the old photos, and recent before/after. The platform edge will allow a good place to walk and a starting place for clearing of adjacent areas. Dogs helping is such a plus, lol.
What a lovely old station, it's sad that they were shut but at least the station can be your family home and bring joy to your lives . I assume the pond is where the line was ? . Good luck you are doing an amazing job 👍👍
Loving your channel and your videography has improved no end! Can I make a request that you leave the old photos, plans etc on screen for a bit longer than a second or two? I have to rewind and hit pause at just the right time in order to get a good look.
Thank you, I’m so glad you’re enjoying the videos! We’ve posted the old plans on the ‘community’ tab so you can look at your leisure. I’ll see if we can add the old photos👍
The grounds are going to take so much work but are going to be beautiful, to have them back to what they once were. You haven't mentioned how much property you obtained with the buildings, looks to be a sizable piece.
Really enjoying myself watching your channel. The waiting rooms on the other side of the platform, guessing that is not in you garden as there looks like it is the other side of a fence? Just amazes me how many of these stations are still sitting empty and derelict mind you all the ones in West Sussex were converted to houses a long long time ago. Regards Chris
Thanks very much Chris! We don’t own the other building I’m afraid… shame, would make a great guest room. I don’t if it’s a Wales thing but I don’t know of any other stations that have been turned into houses, must be some??
I think it would be neat to clear out between the platforms to see maybe the old tracks are still there. If they are it would be even better if you could put an old engine and a sleeper car on the tracks.
Are you jointly responsible for maintenance of the bridge? Does it still carry a road or just a footpath or bridleway now? Do you think the other part owner of the bridge will be easy to liaise with? Oh my, I have soooo many more questions. 😂
I'm going to say this in the nicest possible way I hope, but I've noticed in the videos a lot of references to "we" etc, but it always seems the husband is actually doing the great bulk of the work. Perhaps give him a shout out for doing the heavy lifting. :)
There's also the often forgotten aspect that when you are filming something for UA-cam the act of filming it is a task in itself and makes it all take twice as long. I've heard other people talk about that. One channel I watch the guy gets a lot of criticism for never doing practical things and leaving it to his wife but he's just the one who films most things because he's good at it.
I have a dog that like yours always wants to play ball no matter what your doing and I also have a wife that manages not to stay upright! Love watching how things are going. Is the brick building still there on the other platform?
The area with water that you call the pond, is that where the tracks originally ran or did someone dig that out to creat the pond? Good luck, from Oklahoma, US
I have seen a couple of episodes now of your chanel and have suspected that the pond is not a pond afterall its the old railway tracks this video confirmed it. I have commented on a other video it would be nice to see a locomotive and perhaps a state coach, I stand by this and think it would be amazing if its on track in the original site. You could have a return on the investment by making the coach a air b&b
If 'WE' helped in all of this renovation that 'WE' did, it would have been finished so much sooner and than 'WE' did. Get some work done luv, my missus could not watch me do all this renovation by myself without feeling guilty. Perhaps this is why you put in an appearance after reading what people think of your input in this.
The pond (old track bed) that has formed between the platforms will be very nice once cleared and cleaned up.
Love how she says we raked away !
I have just found your channel. I love the way you say" we had lots of fun" when you are not digging. Sounds a lot like my first wife. By the way I am enjoying the progress. I have binged a few this evening. Cheers from Oz.
😂 it’s the Royal We!
In just a couple of hours, a Bobcat can accomplish what hours upon hours of hard labor. Really not that expensive. You might ask at your local country store who in the community has a machine and operator for hire.
It would be cheaper to buy a secondhand mini digger (and a worthwhile investment), for the amount of land and clearing that needs doing.
Railway sleepers are a very handy thing to have they are amazing for using in your garden. Making benches etc. amazing job your doing
A genuine wooden railway sleeper is very very heavy and a pain to do anything with or even move. Cut down ones are more manageable and unused timber better in a garden. 40 years of oil and fuel (not forgetting human waste) soaked into timber is less than ideal. 😂
I like how you highlight each section you speak about on the videos it makes it easier to orientate. Central Victoria Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you, we will keep doing that 😀
Came across your channel this week and am now following your journey to renovations. This is quite exciting to see what you have planned!
Awesome! Thank you!
Well done for finding the platform. Sweat equity is quite a measurable sense of progress. Exhausting, but satisfying.
Tea time! Lol!
That was one of the most fun jobs we’ve done so far!
Fabulous finding the old platform …. Ooh sorry that you fell over glad your were ok xx
Our first ‘blooper’!
Thank youbfor sharing. The old train ran thru my yard and I always thought about what i might find digging up the yard. But i didnt 😅
Maybe you should get a metal detector out there, you never know 😃 G
Lovely work guys - you are bringing new life to this significant place!
You might want to hire a landscaping company for the really heavy work. They have the equipment to make short work of those shrubs and overgrowth.....pick your battles:)

A few people have mentioned having a carriage between the tracks! What a dream 😃
Wow, so cool!! I really hope you decide to keep the idea of a pond underneath that archway... maybe something where you could have water plants along the sides and a pump to keep it clean for you and even koi fish or something. Would be so lovely under that arch!
We will keep the pond we think, possibly cut down the size, it is huge currently. We will get a better idea when we trim back the plants.

Thank for the lovely feedback, we’re learning as we go and glad you’re enjoying 😊
I just subscribed and wow I want to watch more. I love these sorts of renos
Thanks very much!
Love the dogs just want to play ball. Binge watching your channel and subscribed? Looking forward to seeing your project develop along
Thank you very much!

I love the patience of your husband with the “yellow ball”
I’d love the see the original covered platform restored to original and used as a patio. As a Californian, I’d use part of the track bed for a pool!
What an amazing idea 💡!!! Wish we had the climate for an outdoor pool California style 😢
I am really excited to be able to follow along. Your dogs are cracking my up! I know the feeling of trying to work and them wanting to play. I love history, and this is a wonderful thing you guys are doing. Best of luck!
Thank you, the dogs love the place, they want to play non stop 😁

Since the platform ends at the edge of the pond. The pond is where the train tracks were obviously. Interesting.
lovely find

My brother-in-law is over from the states at the moment, he has some great machinery for looking after his land! I’m very jealous.
Are those nettles I see? I like the comparison of the old photos, and recent before/after. The platform edge will allow a good place to walk and a starting place for clearing of adjacent areas. Dogs helping is such a plus, lol.
Nettles, brambles and some plants growing up from the pond that need thinning or removing. Can’t wait to start on that when the weather improves 👍
What a lovely old station, it's sad that they were shut but at least the station can be your family home and bring joy to your lives . I assume the pond is where the line was ? . Good luck you are doing an amazing job 👍👍
Yes, the pond is where the line was. Thank you.
You have such a great attitude. 😊
😊 thank you 🚂
AND a greenhouse!!!??? Wowzer!
It’s a bit battered but we’ll either repair or replace it. We really want to grow some produce here!

Hi, it’s about an acre altogether… I may need a bigger mower!
@@theoldstationrenovation yes, bigger mower and a few gardeners in the beginning.
Really enjoying myself watching your channel. The waiting rooms on the other side of the platform, guessing that is not in you garden as there looks like it is the other side of a fence?

Cool project.... interesting use of the word "We" though 😅
That’s what my husband said 😂
I think it would be neat to clear out between the platforms to see maybe the old tracks are still there. If they are it would be even better if you could put an old engine and a sleeper car on the tracks.
That would be awesome! Tracks have definitely gone though, we’ve got pictures of them being taken up 😢
Are the tracks still there? It would be great either way to see that all dug out and the pond removed. But either way very cool
Hi, the tracks have long gone, we’ve actually come across a photo of them in the process of being lifted. Piles of sleepers lying around though!
That's a great find! So exciting.. Is the bridge on your property?
It’s the boundary so part on our property.
Are you jointly responsible for maintenance of the bridge? Does it still carry a road or just a footpath or bridleway now? Do you think the other part owner of the bridge will be easy to liaise with? Oh my, I have soooo many more questions. 😂
No. The two friends are the helpers.
anyone see the cat uner the bridge on the old photo @5:05 ?
I do now!! What a great spot 🐈⬛
Hire a mini digger and dig the lot out
back breaking work!
Certainly was for one of us!
So your pond is the track bed flooded, and filled in up to plattform grade by the station!!!
Yes, part of the track bed is filed in with earth, part is the pond and under the bridge it sloped back down to track bed level.
Fyi the slope on the end of a platform that leads to the railway line is called a ramp end
I didn’t know that, thanks very much 😊
Cool
Wouldn't it be fun to find an old train car & tracks to put in the garden for a little guest house? 😎
Yes, would love that.
Get yourself a weed whacker and a blower...huge timesavers and goes much faster and more thorough.
I got a weed whacker for Christmas!! I must have been a good boy. Hopefully I won’t have to wait until next Christmas for a leaf blower!
I'm going to say this in the nicest possible way I hope, but I've noticed in the videos a lot of references to "we" etc, but it always seems the husband is actually doing the great bulk of the work. Perhaps give him a shout out for doing the heavy lifting. :)
He does a lot ❤️

LOL that's hilarious 🤣
I have a dog that like yours always wants to play ball no matter what your doing and I also have a wife that manages not to stay upright! Love watching how things are going. Is the brick building still there on the other platform?
After all the ball chasing the dogs are more tired than we are!
The building is there but we don’t own it, it’s just outside our boundary 😢
@@theoldstationrenovation Just amazing to see what still remains of the station from the photo. Dogs and balls will keep going all day unlike me!
Are you going to dig down to the track bed eventually?
We are definitely thinking about it. Have considered a few options for what we could do, put a sunken greenhouse maybe
Great idea, maybe a big firepit too and some seating for the summer nights.@@theoldstationrenovation
Wow! I'm really enjoying your journey! 🚂🚂
Love your doggos too!❤❤
The area with water that you call the pond, is that where the tracks originally ran or did someone dig that out to creat the pond? Good luck, from Oklahoma, US
Hi, the pond is in the track bed. I recently saw a photo on FB where the space is completely only three years ago!
Cool👍
Is it worth buying an old mini digger for this clearing work, you would probably get back what you paid for it when you've done.
Are you planning on keeping the pond down in the railway area or going to pull it out?
Keeping part of it I think, it is big so we may make it smaller.
That would be amazing, especially if it was positioned as if coming out of the bridge!
Love it!! Do you own the bridge as well?
The bridge is the border between our land and the railway company land. We don’t maintain it but have the pleasure of looking at it.
@@theoldstationrenovation that's even better i guess!
A magnetometer or metal detector should be of help.
Are you planning on trying to find the other side of the platform? Because you could do something nice with it, if you were to find it
❤
Get a metal detector so you can find treasures!
Yes, great idea!
Is the other building still there, opposite your station house? Next to the metal bridge.
Yes but it’s not on our property. There is a business that operates on the land and they’ve owned it for decades.
In all.your videos you state , "WE" and its mostly your significant other doing about.95% of.the.work
Your videos would be better if you set your camera up on a tripod. The too quick panning and walking while you film are making me car sick!
Thanks for the advice
