even if it isn't perfect, the sheer effort put in by this man is astounding. First of all, having the guts to up in front of a high school talent show and do it. Second, ABSOLUTELY KILLING IT!

I spent the first 5 years of my playing days learning this solo. After playing it in several local classic rock cover bands, I got pretty darn close to the original recording. Several people told me I played it better than any other player they had ever seen. If they only knew the HOURS I spent practicing it…they’d understand why. BTW, playing the entire solo by yourself CORRECTLY will wear your fingers out! 😮
Takes balls in general! Playing any piece on any instrument in front of a crowd is really nerv wracking, even easy stuff you've been practicing for hours everyday for months. It's like your body becomes hyper aware of everything you see, touch, and think and start to second guess yourself 😅 This was well performed, just kept moving past the mistakes.
I gigged drums for years. Mostly with southern rock bands. Jammed Skynyrd so much I can't take to hear it anymore. This kid is good. He was really nervous. He has the chops. He's better than Dave Hlubek, who did the free Bird solo on the molly Hatchet live album.
It would have helped him if he had a pedal for switching to lead. Doing that in front of a crowd would make me nervous too. Plus, he's playing in front of people he has to attend school with. They like it too. That's an adrenaline rush.

@@williamsuper213 dude, I know right. Just saw them live, too bad Gary died before I got to see them, but even after all these years, they are still wickedly great at playing. I do with that Bob and Allen got more credit.
On the record "Pronounced", that's Allen Collins playing the lead by himself at the end. However, Gary Rossington is playing the slide. When Steve Gaines joined the band, and they were playing live, he would jump in an double lead with Allen at the end while Gary played rhythm. Amazing guitarists, all. Too, maybe we ought to give a shout out to Leon Wilkeson. Some of the bass runs he did on 'Free Bird' on the "One More From The Road" albumn just shreds it.
But on the studio album "Pronounced", I believe Ed played bass on Freebird according to a number of internet posts. In the live performances, I think Ed played slide guitar along side Gary on Freebird.
