Lightning Fast Single Kick - Larnell Lewis
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 бер 2020
- Larnell Lewis has impeccable foot technique that allows him to play doubles and triples with ease. What’s the secret to his incredible control? “It’s a combination of a size 15 shoe, a Yamaha FP9 [pedal], and a whole bunch of experiences.”
And in Larnell’s experience, he finds he gets the most control with his heel up, and where he taps the footboard in two separate strokes rather than sliding forward.
In this video, he demonstrates some examples while keeping 8th notes on the hi-hat and the snare on 2 and 4. Start slow and with a metronome to understand the motions, and even try tapping it out on the floor before you sit down on the drums.
The biggest takeaway from this video, however, is to be patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was Larnell’s foot technique. You’ve got this!

I most definitely do this lol
This dude is my favourite drummer right now. For me, his playing is a damn near flawless blend of chops, technique musicality, expression, style dynamics, and more.
Took the words outta my mouth
Hopefully he washed his hands
@@solitudeparade this was filmed long before the virus considered a pandemic
Larnell is on another level!
Richard Sawney talking about when you took the words out of Henrique’s mouth. Larnell doesn’t need to wash his hands those doubles were clean
Do you want double pedals?
Guest artist: Wait... what's a double pedal?
He'd play them so fast it would sound like a solid quarter note
Joey noes about double bass
Hed play them so fast the sound waves wouldnt reach our ears until he's done playing.
As a guitarist, I resemble that remark. Never enough pedals. 🤣
@@Ashroyer86 he’d make it sound like a buzz roll

😂😂😂😂 You and I both!
Probably the best drum teacher a drummer could ever have! Really enjoy his explanations and his overall calm art of speaking. Phenomenal drummer!
🙂🤘
If could have Larnell teaching on every subject that would be great. This guy is the best.
Hahah glad you enjoyed it! 🙂 Have you also checked out his live lesson? ua-cam.com/video/HYooD58N0Lg/v-deo.html
@@DrumeoOfficial Of course I have ! A great lesson.
@Drumeo Could Larnell show us how he adjusts his foot pedal for proper foot attack precision? I love his technique. Ill be applying this.
This dude is so calming and articulated, what a great teacher
Even the way he speaks has rhythm, the articulation and precision on how he enunciates his words is flawless
This was a great presentation! Larnell talks very well. He sounds like he could speak on a PBS kids commercial 👍
He's the Le'Var Burton of drums lol🤣
And we are all kids next to him.
0:33 This is exactly what my wife said on the night of our wedding.
You said to her, show me your rudiments baby
Lol
😂😂😂😂
I have been playing for a long time (50 years) and read drum music,' I studied Jazz, Latin, and Rock. Having said that, there are tons of great drummers out there (in Europe, Africa, India, the States, etc.), and one of my favorites is Dave Weckl, but I tell you, Larnell is trully one of the absolute best drummers in the world right now, and he is constantly getting better and better. He has at his disposal (in any song or solo situation) a full spectrum of the most "APPROPRIATE" emotion, technic, feel, and understanding of what the moment calls for. His technic, time, note accuracy, and overall feel & approach to the kit are flawless; he is top-notch and that's a strong understatement. What I however like the most about him is his humble personality and soft-spoken nature. Great human being!
Yea his temperament/attitude are the cherry on top! What a pleasant dude
Best video on single kick I've seen. And Larnell is not only one of the world's best drummers, he's the best communicator on drumming in the world. Thank you Drumeo for yet another game changer!
Larnell Lewis just makes me smile. He's got such great energy around him.

LL is actually playing the pedal as an instrument using different parts o the pedal for effect. This is so intelligently explained and demonstrated. Thank you LL.
This man is not only an amazing drummer, but a great teacher too. Top lesson. Thank you very much for this information!!!
What an amazingly humble guy. I met Sput and even more than his mindblowing chops, was struck by this same quality. Thank you both.
I saw Larnell's band perform at Toronto Jazz Festival 2019. What a treat. Fantastic performance! I spoke with Larnell after the show for a couple of minutes. He's genuinely humble and a family man. I purchased his CD and he was gratious enough to sign it for me. Play it often while I'm driving...trying to figure out how his mind works. Larnell's voice on drums is unique and powerful. I love his style of playing.
Great footwork, Larnell!! I've got some more homework to do!! Keep on grooving, bruh!!
Holy sh*t it's Marvin! I loved you in Tonight Show!
Marvin!!!!!! 😮😮😮😮😮 I cant believe! *faints
Marvin!! That Mulgrew Miller album you played on in the 80’s was a game changer for me!
SMITTY!!!!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽💪🏽💪🏽
I started doing this inadvertently like 3 years ago. Really glad they made this video so drummers can master this really useful technique
🤘
I’ve been doing it for years as well for 2 strokes, but 3???? That’s new to me. haha
I play with two bass drums and he is still many times faster than me lol
I don't play with a bass drum at all. I've got a very loud heart.
I miss what I use to do, was play the edge of the sides of the pedals, in other words when U put your foot on the side edge's works really weird but also helps, especially when you have a bigfoot, my nephew has trouble with that coz... He still looking for size 18 shoes,,, he can play drums a little bit his name is Ashley Schirmer in South Australia...
But he also rides motorbikes that worries me a little bit cos he's a dare 😈 devil on motorbikes,,, he's come off a few times of his motorbike,,, & I'm just glad his still alive...

the groove he plays at the end is incredible. the way he adds in his hi hat while playing on the ride just adds so much to the feel. and props to whoever mixed this recording because the drums sound fantastic.
Awesome that you have a lesson focused on the feet! I like how your talk about the placement of your foot on the footbaord and how it changes the sound.
Perfect explanation of the slide technique. I always wondered why this technique never worked for me; your explanation put my thoughts into words that I couldnt quite put my finger on before.Thank you!
He directly states it isn't sliding.
This is amazing, especially when I’m trying to learn some of John Bonham’s work! Fantastic drummer, too!
Yes! Me too!
Exactly my thoughts!

Amazing how smooth Larnell is. Wow! Great explanation of a tricky technique. Yeah he is Amazing!
one of my favorite guys on Drumeo. Fantastic drummer, great dude and teacher.
Love ya Larnell, this lesson is invaluable
5:40 is he playing the PH intro?
I went looking for this comment 😂
We all heard it ;)
@@vedsrivastav3353 same here lmao
but the phub intro is a really common rhythm so prob not on purpose
Notation wise, it would actually be pretty different, but it's pretty similar sounding
Dude! That's crazy foot speed and control! amazing!
Larnell is a beast of a drummer, with superb footwork! Nice job:)
Fantastic groovy rhythm. This is what real drumming is all about.
You're a gentleman and a genius drummer, Larnell!
5:43 Only Larnell can get away with playing the pornhub beat on Drumeo.
Im ditching my routine and just doing this till further notice. Ive been trying to break a speed barrier for a while now and what Ive learned today is its all about foot doubles and triples, get those under control and the rest will take care of its self.
Great, simple, no b.s. video 👍
Over all totally solid kit sounds good sensible explanations and great groove Thanks 🤘🏼🥁🤘🏼
First heard John Bonham doubles and triples on bass drum in 1969. his technique was just based upon where his leg and foot fell. He was able to do it the first time he sat down at the drum kit. On some of his solos you can see him do quads, sickest foot of all time. And beats the bass drum really hard seriously beats the crap out of the drum. Absolutely frightening
This guy is phenomenal, I love his technique and his abilities on playing the kit, please keep him coming to drumeo, I love his videos
Larnell you are awsome like a musicion and also as a person.Your explanations are clear as your drumming. Thanks for your time and knowledge sharing with us.All the best.
That’s insane.
Great drummer 🤘
Nicely Done Larnel it’s nice to see more than just 2 note patterns
What a gentleman. Thank you for this.
Damnnnnn, thank you so much. This guy is so precise. I hope I could play like this one day.
You are very welcome. 🙂
While Snarky Puppy is not my musical taste, Larnell is a pretty awesome man and his skills are undeniable.
I also liked the video of him reacting to covers of his music, really shows just how great of a man he is. Thanks Drumeo!
Fantastic teacher. I'm an old veteran of the skins looking for new things. Thanks Drumeo and Larnell for this insightful video. Good way to start off Christmas! Thanks for the gifts!
this is such a beautiful break down. amazing teacher
Wow this is why larnell is my favorite drummer right now, 7:56 😍
you can tell larnell is just the sweetest guy in addition to being an inhuman drummer
This drum kit is beautiful. What a nice kit.
So, I now have to deal with the fact that Larnell has more talent in his right foot, than I have period ! I'm SO glad I watched this. Great video !
Larnell Lewis inspires me to play drums!
This guy and Stan Bicknell are ridiculous.
Thank you so much for this lesson!! Much easier now to take control!
Great teacher it's so hard to teach this stuff with words.... try it yourself and you'll see... thanks mr. Lewis. Great mind great feel and tone.
Being able to do this slow is the key...🤯
Larnell Lewis is an amazing musician and an amazing person. The impeccable precision and musicianship of his drumming, his humble attitude and his great teaching skills. I could listen to him playing or talking forever. Wow!
Fantastic lesson thank you so much! I will be definitely trying this technique 👍👍🥁🥁👍
Larnell Lewis seems so relaxed, natural, and down to earth in his approach. I find myself wishing I was home with my kit after watching his videos! Not this truck driving that pay's the bills. At least I don't have to worry about my transmission getting upset with all this tapping! XD

Excellent!.. very clear!.. great job, great drummer!!
Best and easiest example of how to do this, cheers 👍
Drumeo one thing you left out was the tension on the pedal. Although the advice is phenomenal, sometimes it can't work if we set up the pedal to max tension.
I would like this information as well. How tight, how loose and/or how much does it matter?
@@hawkrider88 I've been getting mixed answers whenever I ask. At this point I'm just doing what feels best for me.
I started out with setting up the pedal as loose as possible. Then every day or so I'd crank it up just a little bit until I hit max tension. For me, med-low tension has been working fine. Do what works best for you.
Wrong. Actually the more tension you add to the spring the faster the footboard comes back to your foot allowing you to be faster because there is less delay between hits
@@GZLionHD Agreed, but too much tension and you won't be able to press it quickly enough with your foot.
So stoked for Larnells masterclass today that he’s doing through the Snarky Puppy website!
Woah thanks for telling me
I was actually looking for a video about Martial Arts and kick training. I stayed for the entire video and subscribed, you are brilliant.
Thank you for sharing Larnell, much love to all 💙💙💜💜💚💚💛💛
5:39 was super close to be the PH intro
I would use this technique just before I crash to end😊👍
Incredible drummer and incredible teacher.
He's very professional. Appreciate the tips
Thanks Larnell, you're amazing! I'm curious if you are pushing off the pedal to bring your knee up or lifting from your hip?
Samantha Urich thanks for asking. I’m lifting from my hip.

2nd day practicing this exercises.
I've started with the 3 first grooves practicing the 3 at 70bpm, 10 minutes each and resting 5 minutes between.
I am starting slow to be sure that i'm not losing the technique while playing.
I pretend to accelerate the tempo every 5 days.
I'll come the 20th days to inform how i am going.

Pd: I'm Chilean so if my english is a little bad I apologize
Pd2: I've been practicing like i wrote in my comment and 10 days after I'm having a lot of control with the pedal and I'm playing the 3 grooves at 75bpm!! I'm very very happy
@@juanchersdrums5101 That's great to hear! Glad that you're able to see improvement. Keep going!!!!!
Hi guys!
I've been practicing this exercise since like a month and a half and i finally can play the last groove!!!!!! I'm very happy with this, i can use doubles on fills and grooves and that was my dream. I'll keep practicing to improve my control but i just want to say: thanks Larnell
@Yeokay Hi Yeokay! What is your throne height? I think the problem can be there. The height that I use is 3 fingers (horizontal) over my ball joint and it works for me. The top of the fingers must coincide with the top of the throne.
The idea is that when you lift your heel or feet your ball joint don't have to pass your hip line.
Try this and ALWAYS do a little warm up before u play and rest enough between exercises. Remember, our body is much more expensive that any shellpack, cymbal or whatever.
Take care! I'll be waiting for your replay
wow :D
I love his drumming, but I love his personality even more!
Thank you kindly for posting this video brother. This helped me so much. I took my dbl pedal off because I want to improve my technique. This is the video I was looking for. I'm grateful.
My like after first 20 second.
Man, I just started playing drums two months ago....WHAT AM I DOING HERE....Too advanced for me but he has great talent
You are a very cool guy! And your technique is sick… I been at it for 32 years and I love to learn.. thanks for lesson
Interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Really should have shown the technique for playing 3 triplets on the foot as shown in the beginning. That can be studied if you slow the speed down to 1/2 or even slower.
A nice tip to play triplets is playing the first note with your heel down, then you bring your heel up to play normal double strokes. I'm also shocked about this video, Larnell is my best!
Bruh I never even thought about that. All this time watching drum vids like this and never thought to slow it down! Thank you!!
It’s all the same bro technique. As long as u master controlling the “toe tap” and the heel drop u can play whatever combo of notes u want.
This man goes faster with one foot than I can go with one hand 😂
Maybe because of the direct drive kick pedal.
@@tieukhavu8832direct drive really isn’t the main factor in playing fast, it’s basically entirely technique.
The shuffle on the bass drum
sounds amazing
Damn he’s a good teacher! Thanks Larnell, love your Yamaha.
I’m a drummer with both ankles fused from a motorcycle accident. I LOL at vids like this. Great tips for the normal jointed tho
Very sad times
I don't mean to sound condescending, but I think you can still do a pretty decent heeltoe, cause the motion is mostly knee. I know Jared has an older vid where he breaks down how to do the heeltoe and if you have small feet and a big board like me you can actually do one stroke with your heel on the pedal first. I don't know if it would work for you or if it might end up hurting your foot but it's worth a try!
@@IhateU43 Thanks. It’s all in the toe and knee when you have fused ankles. When you have a fused ankle joint, It’s like your wearing a permanent ski boot, so any action that’s “heel toe” was left on the operating table. But I’ve developed a very fast knee and toe motion that is kind of like a double “toe then knee stomp”
@@jarodreddig63 Heeltoe is when you stomp with your heel first then raise your leg so your toes hit right after. It doens't require any ankle motion, just knee. What you described is the slide technique, which I thought would be harder for you to pull off since it's a heel-up thing. I'm sorry if I sound negative in any way, but this fascinates me. I'm primarily a metal drummer so I have a double kick pedal and I NEED my ankles if I want to play fast without fatigue but since you don't have that luxury I was wondering how you play so I might learn a thing or two for my own. I'm just a huge nerd xD
@@IhateU43 It’s cool, your not the first guy to try to understand a fused ankle, both in my case. It does fascinate other drummers. Trust me man I was a metal drummer too before my accident and had to go to single pedal and adapt. I wasn’t always this way. I think if we hung out you’d see that what your describing is what Im dojng within physics. I used to heal toe with both feet, I used LOTS OF ANKLE, along with knee and toe. Im all leg , knee, and toes now. You think your not using any ankle but you are. A fused ankle and foot is just like a club foot. I have other drummer friends that forget my disability and my single pedal is quicker then their single pedal. I’m in my 40s and started at 10. I was privy to all the correct techniques before my accident.
