The finesse, the subtlety, the dynamics, the feel, the smoothness and the skill is almost unreal So much more than just how fast or how hard, how loud or the number of drums in your spread. This man brings musicality and makes the drums become a melodic instrument. Larnell you are a truly God blessed and God gifted drummer🙏🏾
This man up with the best drummers of all time, he is a gift, can play anything, but his jazz is something else. I would have loved to have heard him and Monk play together, that would have been just too far out for words
This is beautiful. I'm not a drummer, so I don't have the language to describe what I enjoy about it. However I am an avid listener and the drums are my favorite instrument to listen to, especially at the hands of someone like Larnell. But reading others' comments makes me realize his playing "reads", his playing is understood to listeners whether or not they have the language to describe what they enjoy about it. After reading others' comments I can discern that what the most experienced drummer appreciates in their listening is also what a person who has never touched a drum set appreciates. And that accesibility is not a given, that's a skill, and that's true Art-at least, it's the kind of Art that I believe in.
Oh man, I've never heard anything quite like this as a drum solo, and I can't really say that often any more. In fact, I refuse to call this a drum solo. It's a song. It's a story. It's someone dynamically sucking you into a tale.
When Larnell plays it’s like you keyed all the notes into a computer program. Every stroke, every accent…..it all hits 100% perfectly in time. So sick.
I like how at 5:13 he plays the melody on the drums, then repeats the same melody but on the cymbals, which was also the same melodic motive from the middle of the video! Incredible musical development, let alone technical skill.
I was honoured enough to be in one of his phenomenal masterclasses - he’s an incredibly wise artist with such a deep understanding of his craft. True inspiration
Woaw !!! So much technic, groove and mastering his craft Just to express his musicality and his feelings !!! My jaw was ready and drop Anyway !!! Thx drumeo !! Thank you larnell !!!
Larnell Lewis is my favorite drummer now. I used to be mesmerized by “the wrong things” when it came to drums, but after listening to Larnell play so much I now see what it means to play musically.
I saw Larnell Lewis and clicked. But most impressive, are all the AFRICAN ROOTED rythms and styles I spotted in this piece. The personification of the talking drum.
@@DrumeoOfficial every day i watch the video of his cover to the song of Chicks pain because it was so awesome that i always set it as background song while im working
I especially love hearing Larnell solo within the context of a song. He's brilliant no matter what but I think that's where he is even more next level. I'd love to see more of that on Drumeo. Drummers playing solos over a track. Larnell soloing over " One Note Samba" with Laila Biali's band is so enthralling because of how it sets up the song and then take in how he punctuates Laila's piano lines. This guy listens and just makes all the musicians sound better. The glue so-to-speak. I learn a lot from watching him. I think Larnell will become the most recognized percussionist out of Canada.
There are almost too many things to like in this solo, but I'll point to the one that stood out the most (to me) while also being the most under-stated: the imperfection. There are a number of short moments when the improvised solo broke - the groove fell apart for half a second, or something didn't get hit in time, or there was otherwise a small hiccup... The way these were USED to create something new was just awesome. I've been playing for a while, and I'm positive most experienced drummers understand the concept - but being able to execute it to great creative effect - THAT is what stood out to me here. Thanks Larnell and Drumeo... ps. the sound of that kit and the cymbals. Hats off to the recording engineers and drum techs...
Just waiting fo the next larnell video in Drumeo.... So blessed to have this channel to don't stop seeing larnell play. You guys are doing a tremendous work, many thanks and blessing for you and Larnell!!!!
Larnell is freaking awesome! but also props to the person who miced the set and mixed the audio, it sounds just beautiful!
Thanks!
facts
Was thinking the same thing after I put my headphones in and got lost in this beauty
This dude is amazing. The cleanliness in his playing almost makes you forget this is improvised.
Insanely clean.
Is this really improvised?
Yup. I thought the rim shots were a click track
Are you kidding me?! This is improv?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!😱😱😱😱😱
@@DrumeoOfficial Improvised? Achilles, Agony and Ecstasy in Eight Parts by Manowar. Drum solo at 7:45. Released in 1992.
In an age where so many drummers are treating drums like a sport, Larnell treats drums like a musical instrument.
sport and music have a lot in common.
I agree. It's basically why I find Larnell's drumming intoxicating and Thomas Lang's to be lifeless noise.
@@Johnbobon Haha, I actually like Lang's playing most of the time. It's the endless gospel chops or blast beat guys I can't dig. Lol
@@ThePoorBoy I was a bit harsh. Thomas Lang obviously has ability far exceeding most. Far beyond me, no doubt.
@@Johnbobon But I still enjoy Larnell's playing more! Thomas is great, but Larnell is brilliant -- I think he may even possess some genius.
"Larnell Lewis sits behind a drumkit in silence for 12 minutes."
Me: *watches all 12 minutes, likes, re-watches*
"so open, such space"
😂😂😂😂😂
HHahahaha 100%
.... and each time we learn something new.
Kkkkkkkkkkk
There's such a narrative arc to this drum solo and I can't stop listening.
Drums aren't just noise.
The finesse, the subtlety, the dynamics, the feel, the smoothness and the skill is almost unreal
So much more than just how fast or how hard, how loud or the number of drums in your spread.

Saw “Larnell Lewis” clicked fast! No need to think about it
Same
Yes of course
Same here
That makes 46 of us
HAHAHA Same! Larnell + 6 hours ago -> Click

Those single kick doubles are so clean
This guy is the definition of dynamics

Thank you Drumeo for introducing me to Larnell. It’s always inspiring to see this absolute monster play the set.
This feels more like a song than a solo. Just greatness.
Perfect video to test headphones, so crisp and powerful!!! Sound engineering at it's best!!!
These tom sounds are 🔥

The City Lights solo, The live crowd version, is just astounding
When Larnell plays it’s like you keyed all the notes into a computer program. Every stroke, every accent…..it all hits 100% perfectly in time. So sick.
I feel like I havent ever seen Larnell perform a free solo like this, it's truly beautiful to see his musicality on full display
I like how at 5:13 he plays the melody on the drums, then repeats the same melody but on the cymbals, which was also the same melodic motive from the middle of the video! Incredible musical development, let alone technical skill.
Probably the most interesting and inspiring drummer to watch in the last 10 years.
Thank you for this Drumeo cause we all know that Larnell does his thing on every track
Very welcome!
How am I only just realizing he's Canadian. As if I could love him more, now we got national pride in the mix? Hot damn.
Man... that was something else. Just so smooth, clean, gentle and precise.
This was insanely delicate, I'm used to drum solos being mostly energetic and fierce. Also I couldn't believe this was improvised
Larnell kills it again. Fantastic.
His eyes at 0:39... Our Man Larnell has gone off to that special place, see you in another 5 minutes.
His drumming is so colourful and mesmerising.
I was honoured enough to be in one of his phenomenal masterclasses - he’s an incredibly wise artist with such a deep understanding of his craft. True inspiration
This is unreal. a proper player!
I felt that when he put the stick in his mouth and rolled with one hand. It gave me goosebumps
Yeah that's right... 🥁
How do you even do that?
He should have a course on single hand roll
@@harryheard8772 gravity rolls I think, but good luck trying to get them this clean and getting the whole thing to be smooth as that
Freehand One Hand Roll was made Popular by Johnny Rabb and he Has tons of Videos
Dynamics are freakin off the charts!
5 seconds in, already know it's gonna be epic!!!!!!
This man is so smooth he gives Dolphins a run for their money
🐬
😂
Like the journey in sound that takes us where the drummer may go you sir have taken us there.
The Maestro that is Larnell Lewis...amazing talent who makes me aspire to be better each time I sit behind my kit.
I see Larnell Lewis, I like, I watch 50 times, and I always pick my jaw up off the floor.

Every stroke of this dude is art.
Show! The best. Top 👍🏼!! From Brazil
What can you say...simply brilliant
Definition of a master pro! Always enjoy seeing Larnell Lewis killing it!
there's so much going on and most of it flies over my head. even then, it's still a beautiful subtle piece of music.
Like button hit yet before the play button. I knew it was going to be awesome.
I love when he pauses in between phrases. It makes me feel like he's almost human!
"OO" jaw on floor. Pure poetry.
In complete control the entire time 👌🔥🔥
One of my favourite drummer😍😍 thankyou drumeo for this

Excellent and beautiful on so many levels. Feel, technique, inventiveness, dynamics, narrative flow...Bravo and thank you, Mr. Lewis.
Artistry at its finest
His kit and his cymbals just sound so damn good too.
Absolute pleasure! Thank you Larnell and Drumeo

"I paid for the whole drum kit, so I'm gonna use it"
This is just.......... There are no words
Incredible
Larnell really turns a kit into such a musical instrument. It's unparalleled
When he goes into that groove at 3:42 🔥
Larnell always kills it!
Tuning and mix were excellent making the solo so musical
Incredible drummer.
This is what precision meets art looks like holy mother of God.
Just Larnell, being completely awesome as always...!
The Man. Period. Full stop.
Perfect for a movie!
Breathtaking talent and what a sound!
Fantastic!
Can anyone else hear the other instruments as Lewis plays??? He's so musical with his drums, I can hear the WHOLE band. wow
My favorite modern drummer!!!
I love how he takes us with him rhythmwise soooo smooothly. My brain literally clicks in polyrhythm.
such a storyteller. blessed of God.
Saw larnell Lewis clicked liked before getting to 1:00 mark
One of those rare drummers where you don't miss the band - Larnell is band enough by himself.
I'm a drummer, and oh lordy the sweet beats from smashing the meat!wow one of the best in the world this guy is amazing fruit!!!
Love the dynamics in the rim shots. Good feel and flavor. Well played
