    After watching many different videos of orchids I came across your very interesting and well demonstrated video. Have inherent a lot of different neglected orchids so I am doing my homework before I start the recovery process and rescuing these beutifull orchids. Thank you. Yes there is a overgrown cattleya and very overgrown cymbidium..😱

    I'm very impressed with how well that Cattleya was able to be separated with the teamwork of the two experts! I'm also interested to see if and how well that singleton pseudobulb that was accidentally cut from the rhizome does. I hope she can set up a good root system and maybe become a gigantic Catt of her own in a few years… one can never tell with orchids. That's the first thing I've learned about them!

    I would have put those two parts in separate pots - but that’s just my opinion.... Nice job working on a huge root system.

    I enjoyed this video so much🤗🤗. I've divided some big ones too. Now I'm unable so I finally convinced my hubby to do them for me. 😉. I agree with you in using a plastic pot instead. I usually use terra-cotta pots here in the Caribbean since they cool and dry out faster the orchids that are outside my terrace, but when repotting comes around, plastic is way easier to handle 👍🏽

    Wouldn’t it be easier to work with it up on a table than down in the floor. Boy I commend your knees. I would get down and never get up.
    It’s best to use a towel to cover the pot just in case of shards to fly up and get in your eyes.
    And a small putty knife or artists knife can help “scrape” the roots loose if needed so you don’t break a new growth.

  • @michaelmccarthy4077

    I just went through a similar repotting. I inherited a C. bowringiana whose owner passed away, a bit bigger than your plant, in desperate need of a repot (no idea how long it had been in there but the media was mush). I used an icing spatula to loosen the roots, which probably damaged more roots than if I had broken the pot but it saved a rather expensive pot that I was able to put the larger division back into.

    Terracotta pots are not advised for orchids as the roots adhere to the pot. Terra-cotta pots also introduce infection via the organisms that grow in the pots.

    I enjoyed your repotting video. You seemed so expert and I’m always a bit timid about repotting cattleyas.
    I thought you might have treated the areas that were cut with hydrogen peroxide to stop any pathogens entering the plant,and cinnamon powder to help dry the cut ends. Any reason not to do that?

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza  4 роки тому +1

      Hello Audrey and thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Personally I am of the opinion that big healthy plants do not need molly coddling. The methods you describe are more important with sick or weak plants. I do regularly use cinnamon on orchids (but not when I am about to pour water on the area) and occasionally hydrogen peroxide but in this case the orchid did not need that kind of pampering. Incidentally, it has flowered magnificently ever since, the last time being December 2019 (see following)

    Love your orchid videos! Question? I have a large Cattleya purchased in a wooden hanging basket. The media is going bad and I need to repot. The roots have grown around all the slats. Several of the new growths have died back because of the media. I have 4 to 6 new growths on one side of the basket now. Should I go ahead and cut the plant out of the basket now or wait until (hopefully) it blooms or go ahead while there is new growth now? I don't know what to do???? Regards, Bobette
