  • Today I am repotting one of the latest Cattleya orchids I purchased, which is missing some of its new pseudobulbs!
    🦋 More info below! 🦋
    This is a discounted orchid that I found somewhere on the ground in a flower shop. Here is how she looks like • Women's Day Orchid Hau...
    The front (active) pseudobulbs have been cut because, I think, they were leaning over the pot. But now they are growing roots and new growth, since the base which holds the eyes was left intact!
    I am going for an organic mix and will compare with other Catts in LECA and see if there is any visible difference in their evolution.

    I love the information you give us with each repotting. So helpful. I would love to see videos showing those you recently repotted, with their new root growth and blooms.

    In three months of binge watching you utube videos I actually feel competent in the Orchid world and have 40+ Orchids! Christmas time one orchid that started it all:)

      Haha it's about the same for me! Bingewatched orchid videos for a few months, started in November. But I don't have your rate of expansion... "Only" 19 orchids so far :p

      Marissa K I actually bought from Carmela Orchids an assortment of orchids unknown to myself called “Madison’s Birthday”. It was a good value because so many wonder orchids came my way but I didn’t know what they were before I got them. i think they do this under other “names” and I am sure other nurseries do the same, I just wanted a bunch of orchids and the challenge to figure it out!:)

    Hey! I have bought about a month ago in local flower shop a cattleya that looks the same, big girl, cutted just like this! Mine looks like a cat. Aurantiaca... With this videos i guess it's confirmed, we got these 2 cats from the same batch! Thanks for sharing

      @@MissOrchidGirl yes I saw, but the pot, the size of the orchid, the cut pseudobulbs tell me that probably they are coming from the same nursery? that's what I meant, (hoping to find more of these in garden centers in the future)

    Hi Danny. I recently repotted a newly bought cattleya into leca, tried not to clean much into the root ball and left some residual bark inside so not to drop the flowers. As result the remaining roots just rotted away needing a rerepotting 🙈. But good is new roots are just beginning to emerge and see many new buds around adjacent bulbs. I saw from a grower in the Philippines that whenever he repotted he would always cut off all the roots being that cattleyas produce roots quite vigorously anyways, and I've also witnessed. Also this is the time of the year I can take advantage of. My 2 cents Danny. Also thanks for this vid and great timing.

      Old Cattleya roots very often just die, especially when the plant is not in the best condition. If you cut them all you don't risk rotting of the old roots in the new medium. So this is what the grower did. For me this is the better way in most cases (with bad and questionable root systems) as well to give the new root system a good start. Dannys Cattleya is a bifoliate one, they are even more sensitive and I would not wonder if the last old roots will not make it. But she don't needs them anyway with all the new growth. :)

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  5 років тому +1

      Hi, well it might just be coincidence, Cattleyas are 'happy' to give up all their roots upon the slightest disturbance :) doesn't happen all the time but.. 90% of the times :) it doesn't seem to matter what medium they come from or go in. This is why the rule of 'repotting when new roots start' is in place, particularly for Catts which can start root growth at different stages, depending on species. Ps: I usually only leave last years roots on Catts ;)

    MOG :) Luv your videos. QUESTION -- off topic -- what is your criterion for determining that a particular orchid does not like LECA (Hydroton for me). I have an orchid, repotted 3 months ago, that I am wondering about. It starts roots, then the roots die. I have followed your repotting tips, including using hydrogen peroxide & 70% alcohol, & use only distilled water. Please do a video demonstrating what you look for in determining that the plant does not like LECA. Thanks!!

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  5 років тому +1

      Hi, roots stopping growth is the main sign the orchids don't respond well to something that LECA provides. In many cases it's too much ventilation and too little humidity, or salt deposists at the top. About the alcohol, I hope you didn't put it on the roots, I never said to do that ;)

    Great explanation! I don't own any Cattleyas, (windows in the North :P) but I could use the holder, the size of the medium and pot, the moss only in the bottom and other tips from you with my dendrobiums. Why do supermarkets and flower shops butchered the canes, we'll never know!!!

  • @CalaVdarivdavd
    @CalaVdarivdavd 5 років тому

    I bought my first 2 cattleyas last week, without flowers, because I didn't want to spend a lot of money and not to have a certain success. Of course the bulbs were very high with respect to the pot, the media was bad and the sphagnum bowl was there. One of them had a lot of nice roots and in just a few days after repotting I sau mold on them. In unpotted and all the roots were dead. I cut them, repotted again and now I just have to wait a gazilion years. One of them had 6 cut pseudobulbs! Growers are barbaric!

    Another awesome video! Are you not worried about repotting a plant that is growing new eyes and roots? I have two big dendrobium nobiles that I need to repot (I think most roots are dead), but they are growing lots of keikis and one flower eye with two buds. So I don't want to repot it yet.. Also more eyes are becoming big so there is more new growth coming. Thanks!

    • @familhagaudir8561
      @familhagaudir8561 5 років тому +2

      If your "nobile type" Dendrobium is a complex hybrid, it can grow new roots all year long. I am assuming you have a hybrid for the advice down.
      Since roots can grow continuously, repot when convinient for you. Those complex hybrids are extremely vigorous plants and don't like to dry as much as the species Dendrobium nobile.
      Giving the complex hybrids a dry rest before blooms is just going to harm them. They don't need that to bloom, only the species and primary hybrids need it. What they do need is a day-night temp variation of 10°C and less fertilizer before and during budding along the canes, as overfertilizing at that time results in keikis rather than flowers. (Resume fertilizing when you see flower buds.)
      If canes keep shriveling despite watering, then yes, your roots are dead and it needs an emergency repot. If canes plump back or at least don't shrivel further after watering, then you still have functional roots and it can wait.

      Familha Gaudir thank you very much! I have no tag, i adopted the two plants from someone who was gonna throw them away (no flowers). One actually has pretty good plump canes, the other is very shriveled and doesnt plump up. So i might repot that one today! Its also the one with only keikis, no flower bud. Thank you!

    Great video, I’m having problems with my cattlya the roots don’t look good and the leaves whilt , I’ve repotted them and have them outside under 70% shade cloth - I live in St Pete, Florida I fertilize them 2X a month - it seems I can’t get the roots to grow no snails or pest that I can see - I have 2 at present laying on thin bed of spagnum moss trying to get roots to grow - any ideas?

    How long would this cattleya take before it makes new blooms again? I'm new to cattleyas... I'm having a really hard time unpotting this extremely moss bound cattleya that I just purchased.... the roots will not budge at all and stuck together... The moss is mostly tightly packed in the middle of the root ball. I'm afraid I will have to cut most of the roots. Please advice😅!

    I have a specimen size cattleya that I’ve had for years. Unfortunately, over the past year it got neglected and lost almost all its leaves and all its roots. I’ve been able to successfully regrow new roots and it sent out a few new canes with accompanying leaf growth. The problem now is that it has about 20 to 25 bare leafless canes. Some are very old and wrinkled which I am comfortable cutting off. What do you recommend I do with the remaining leafless canes? Cut the older back ones and leave the newer ones towards the growth side or keep them all? I know a new flower spike will not come out of any of them. It’s a shame to cut back this specimen sized orchid. I need your expert advice. Thank you!

      Michelle Dry I think (I don’t remember which seller, as this was a couple of months ago) I saw them on AliExpress. I wish that I had jumped on them, as I have a big roll of wire to make rhizome clips and hangers to clip onto the side of the pots, but I am not sure if I’m “crafty” (love that word the way Danny said it!) enough to rig this up. Maybe go to the big box hardware stores, you know, a blue or a green one, or, even better, an independently-owned Ace Hardware, and get the smallest size of tomato cage that they have and cut the top portion off?

    • @michelledry499

      Kari K. ok I will check it out, it is surprising though that this seemingly garden staple is not available on Amazon. Just bought an orchid that was actually in an orchid pot ( amazingly) and it has this great clip on the edge of the pot ring support. Maybe I can find orchid pots with this attached, I am going to start looking. I have a few top heavy orchids that are supported by chop sticks:) I get some everytime I buy sushi!

    • @michelledry499
      @michelledry499 5 років тому

      Oh I just found some that are a half circle on Amazon which may be better since the orchid is already big and leaning one way and it may be hard to get in a circle support. They aren’t expensive so maybe this will work.
