Rachel, Your video on dividing a monster Cattleya was well done! Thank you and congrats for blooming your Cattleya on a window sill. I am now motivated to tackle my huge CG Roebling. One suggestion that I have for you that was given to me by another orchid friend and that is to get yourself a nice rubber mallet. With the mallet you can hit the pot (without damaging it) around the edges rather than pulling on the pseudobulbs. The root bound plant eventually pops out without you having to struggle and tear at the plant itself. I find it a handy tool to have around.

And don't forget to grab the growths in the middle! I divided this one again a few weeks ago and forgot my own advice - broke off an outer new pseudobulb. So easy to do :(
+Gardening at Douentza Roger made a good comment about repotting it with the rest of the old pot so I don't destroy anymore more roots, a bit like your one too. I am going to let it flower before I do any more work on it, on the advice of a fellow society member. My fingers are twitching though.

John Benedict ORCHIDS I'm glad to hear some feedback on the new bark. It has always been an issue here. You cannot buy it so I used to order from Germany whenever I bought orchids. I now need big bags though and they will not ship them abroad. Anyway, thanks for your feedback and watching :)

I just re-potted a relic cattleya this day... its actually hard repotting a big cattleya sweated alot.. but its worthit..
+Envenomer J It is physically hard to repot big plants. Cactuses or spiky succulents are the worst though! I hope your cattleya repays you 10 fold!

Oh my, it's really a monster cattleya! And really beautiful too. I love those thick bulbs! I have only once seen a huge cattleya being divided (at our local orchid society's meeting), and it was a large cattleya bowringiana. But I think yours was even bigger. A lot of work to even remove it from the pot. Thanks for this great repotting video! And good job in raising (and dividing) such a huge specimen. :) (By the way, it's Andrea here, from Finland. That was a delightful video! I'm originally from the Caribbean and had a stunning cattleya that I started from a small cutting taken from my uncle's 'monster'! Today I saw a beautiful specimen that was reduced in the garden centre and was in two minds about how to care for it in Buckinghamshire but with your stunning results in Ireland?? :D I'd say that cattleya in the garden centre has my name on it! Thank you for an inspirational video!

Hello and thank you for watching. At the time this video was made I used the Akerne Rain Mix fertiliser.
What a lovely plant and how great care you took of it!! I don't understand why you have to use the polystyrene at the bottom? Could you explain? Would the roots rot at the bottom of the pot? I saw that you left very little space between the roots and the edge of the pot. I bought my first cattleya 1 week ago and it was also a huge plant from a plant shop. Only not knowing that I have to leave very little space I went on and potted it from a 12cm pot to a 18cm pot leaving about 3cm or 1inch around it with a mixture of bark and charcoal as substrate and no styrofoam at the bottom. I used lava pebbles for drainage. My pot has some side holes - every 10 cm a 1cm hole and in between every 2 cm a 0.5cm hole. Would that be allright?
Oh my what a chore, it was a bit painful but you are still left with a little monster hehe :P how many years did you wait for this one to become so large?

MissOrchidGirl It always blooms Jan/Feb for me, I think. I have record of the length between sheath to bloom somewhere. I will check later today for you :)
Gardening at Douentza Hi Danni, I've had a chance to check those dates and CG Roebling was in sheath by 24th October last year and the buds burst out on 18th January. The bud appears in the sheath quite quickly and progression is steady.

I sterilize my bark by baking it at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 hours.

+Ana Maria Clapon Spring is generally the best time to pot anything as many plants come into active growth then. I do try to repot orchids every two years but we all get lazy sometimes! And, besides, I have had a real issue finding decent orchid bark until now. Thanks for watching, Ana.

I have a question concerning the media that still remains about the roots. Will that media that remains cause the roots to rot in time? I have been concerned about removing 99.9% of the old media when I repot because the old media is acidic and will damage the roots. Of course trying to remove all the media can damage the roots so I wasn't certain what to do in my own repotting. I have an Onc. that needs reporting but I'm afraid to tease out the old media because I might damage the roots. What should I do?
Elona Hartjes Hi Elona, I think it is important to get as much old media out as you can without damaging the roots. I have never been fanatical about this and, in my experience, it has worked well.

Hello: I noticed that you pot your orchids in regular plant pots. Until now, I was led to believe that orchids should be potted in orchid pots. Can you give me the rule of thumb or any of your thoughts? I do not have at this time, any orchids, only hoyas (13 varieties ) but I an very interested in starting with orchids. Can you help me get started?
The most important thing with orchid potting is drainage. You can use ordinary pots if you add a good amount of drainage material to the bottom. I use polystyrene chips. In Victorian times they used tall pots with a big space at the bottom for the drainage medium.
Personally I use clay pots for most of my orchids because they suit my growing environment. When starting out though, it makes sense to use transparent pots so you will know if your plant's roots are in good order.

I have always watered my cattleyas once a week. This one was fertilised at half strength once a week at the time of this video.

Hi Rachel, I have a Blc. Encantos en Grande and it has a beautiful flower with massive and plump pseudobulbs, but it grows so big in one direction that I have had to repot it twice in the two years I have had it, and I want to know if I were to divide it in half, could I put the two divisions in the same pot but in opposite directions so they can get an even distribution of blooms and growth? the pot it's in is already big but the rhizome gets long so it takes up the whole diameter rather than growing like yours in more of an even circle outwards. If I leave it without dividing next year the pseudobulbs will grow outside the pot, so dividing after it blooms this year is necessary. Do your cattleyas grow this way? Or do they naturally grow multiple leads? Thanks for the help and I apologize for the long anecdote, I just want to be sure I do it right since I have never divided an orchid before, I hope it will be okay :) thank you!
Thank you for watching. It sounds like you have a very healthy cattleya. I find that large plants tend to sprout new grows all round but the smaller average-sized cattleyas only make new growths in one direction and flower from that. By the way, there is no problem with putting two divisions in the same pot. Good luck!

This plant was divided in July 2015. In my May 2016 'orchids in flower' update it is again in bloom. See below.
Three of the divisions from this plant flowered the following year. One went to my friend Tina and I may have footage of that. Give me a moment to check! The fourth division went to a inexperienced orchid grower and, unfortunately, he killed it.
