    Such a BRILLIANT re potting Brad :-) I LOVE the idea of using the water jet to clean all off the old soil media, and it looks so beautifully potted up :-) thanks so much for sharing Brad and sending heaps of love and happy growing from Ireland for a FANTASTIC weekend XXXXX

    I'd love to see an update of how that plant's doing! :) I've a ton of those coconut shells hanging baskets, lol.

    Lovely big plant. Same method I use when removing old stubborn media it really helps. But I would have taken my time too clean off all leaves (I use a toothbrush and green soap) and removing the dried stuff around the bulbs, it is a bit more time consuming but worth it since it looks so much neater and a bit healthier especially with all the dry scales.

    (Since you asked) - I often overlook, forget or simply decide to skip steps when repotting, sometimes regretting it latter and I'm never trying to film it simultaneously. In this case, as you noted, I would have tried to scrunch the two plant sections towards the center of the pot more to leave lots of space along the edge where most of the new growth will happen. Since this guy had / has? scale I definitely would want to clean out all the brown sheaths, etc. at the base in order to do a thorough inspection of this hiding place for pest. ~ Have you already heard about Drosera magnifica ? Quite an amazing find! ~ Thanks as always for sharing.

    I tried this a few weeks prior to seeing this video, but to help it along
    I slit some holes in the coconut fibre to assist the stanhopea spikes to find their way out. Now I have to wait and see, how that works, or doesn't.

    I was wondering if it has bloomed through the coconut husk? Beautiful plant! Let us know how it is doing! The suspense is killing us!!

    That's a biiiiig plant!! :) probably some of the old pseudobulbs will start to push out new growth as you divided the plant in two...
    Once in flower it is going to be majestic! Congrats!

    Wow, amazing :D Great repot... I've also recently been using more sphagnum moss lately. I think yeah, you just have to know how to use it so it works for you and your orchids. I'm really liking it for certain things and I'm getting to know it, ha! Thanks.

    How To identify flower spikes of Stanhopea and how long it take to completely mature and bloom.??

  • @liamfoley7357
    @liamfoley7357 8 років тому +2

    Great vid! I think the coconut husk might be to thick to let the spikes come through.

      No the flower spikes find their way through the coconut fibre no proplem.

    Brad, those coconut shell liners are as tough as old boots and I do believe the flowers would have a lot of trouble making it through it as I have a hard time cutting through it to side plant flower baskets. If you could get some N.Z. sphagnum liners they would work perfectly or line the basket with lots of moss.

    • @meadowfrance
      @meadowfrance 8 років тому

      I've heard that they can make it through, you just want to make sure that there isn't a plastic liner inside the coco because I doubt they could get through that. I have one of these coco fiber baskets which does have a plastic liner and I had to poke holes in it for drainage.

    • @TheJakaranda
      @TheJakaranda 8 років тому

      Its true, these liners are tuff. I was growing my tigrina in OLD coconat shell liner basket for many years and it was flowering beautiful. now I had to put the overgrown orchid in a new 40 sm basket, the biggest I could find. I spiked the new liner on the bottom with big sizzles, to make it easier for orchid to get thru. in my local orchid shop here in au I use to buy a special mix for stanhopias and onsidiums. its fine mix, looks pretty much like potting mix, just with different sizes pine bark through and works excellent with coconut shell liners and wire baskets.

      I slit holes in my coconut fibre, but too soon to see if they work.

    Don't forget the DRANO. Bits, roots, bark, moss are deadly to a free flowing drain. Douche hard.

    hey man , I'm following your video's with a very great intrest .
    Could you tell me if the flower of this stanhopea are going true this coco carpet of this pot ?

    Thanks for posting Brad! I have a Stanhopia trigrina as well. I've had it now for about 6 years. It is as big as your plant in the same kind of basket but it has yet to bloom. It is growing in a greenhouse at my job in good light. Have you gotten your Stanhopia to bloom for you and if so, how did you do it? Bloom booster? Dry rest? ~ :

  • @spontina
    @spontina 3 роки тому

    Also, those coconut pads in those wire baskets are terrible. The spikes that grow downward of a Stanhopea will not always penetrate that coco liner. My experience and great success of Stanhopea and Gongora blooms will tell you.

    why do you use moss and not some dirt ?

    • @ArchiesOrchids
      @ArchiesOrchids 7 років тому +1

      Dirt is not an open enough mix, these orchids are epiphytic so they grow with their roots on trees so they dont grow in soil. if you were to put it in soil, the roots would rot.
