Mel, I think your main problem was that when you fit the first part over the rim you need to push it down into the centre of the rim. That gives you some extra tyre so the remainder of the tyre it goes over the rim easier. Most of my experience is with bikes, but think it still applies. The part where the bead sits is a bigger circumference than centre.
Well done on not giving up
MEL - Best tire irons you can get are leafs from old leaf spring suspensions. You can grind whatever contour you want on the ends. We use them on all the tires on the farm works great, and there's no way you'll ever bend one. Another nice thing about it is you can choose the length you want too. Enjoyed the video, looking forward to the next one. Cheers!
Thanks for the tip!
Good idea with mole grips 👍
Thanks 👍
Mel, this must be the ONLY YT Vid covering this topic. Gotta Love them Varios!
Excellent solution opportunities.
The trick on the outer one is to have the first half on the wheel but not up against the back side of the wheel rim, .. push it to the center of the wheel and the rest will pull into place much easier... Now you can do it on the road if you have a flat ... "are you mad about your flat?" ... 🙂
Mell big respect for the tyre fitters who work on the motorways.Just had the red peppers and cheese/mushrooms for tea really good.Roger.
Haha glad you enjoyed them 👍😁👍
Weldone Mel 💪
Mel wins!
The trick too, after you have them all on and torqued into place, you may want to have the tire shop "balance them" ... they said they couldn't replace them but to have them well balanced ... it will be nice not to have everything shake to pieces as you go down the road. Also have the alignment checked .. for better tracking and better tire wear. ...and clock them so the stems on both wheels can be reached to checkout pressures. if they are clocked wrong you will have to remove the wheel.
No need to
Genius. Well done, Mel.
Tire pressure is not something to take for granted. Just because a tire is rated at a "MAX"psi, does not mean you should set the tire to that amount. Tire pressure is to be determined by the vehicles weight and how that weight is distributed over each wheel. You do want the proper friction for the most control of your vehicle. There are several UA-cam videos on this subject.
I'm really enjoying all your Vario stuff Mel.. You have my fantasy van! Keep putting out content pertaining to the vans mechanicals and bodywork. I say that because when folk ask me for advice when looking to do their own conversion, my first bit of advice is to make sure that the bodywork is in sound condition and that the mechanicals are 100% satisfactory before cutting the first bit of timber. Now as for tyre changing, I'll leave that to you, my 62 year old back won't take it! 😅 Keep it up Mel, you are doing great stuff 👍
Thank you so much for the positive feedback and support it really does make a huge difference to me it comments like this that drown out all the negativity. Thank you 👍🤓👍
Well done!
I would fit them in my shop, up untill 22inches is fine for my equipment.
Sure is not expensive to have it done by a tire professional, and it saves your freshly painted rim..
No need for balancing you said in a comment. Not so sure there buddy.. You can sure take the 'risk' but the ride sure will be less vibrant if you do balance them.
And, if you want to DIY that, it's also possible with the right knowledge and some simple tools.
Google is your best friend.
Cheers!
Just a quick note, your tyre pressure gauge has two valve connectors on the end, one facing forward and one facing backwards for inflating the outside tyre on dual wheel trucks, so you dont need to remove the wheel to check your pressures.👍
Thanks for the info!
Hard works no easy. Well done
Thanks 👍
Entertaining experiment , thanks for giving it a bash , 👍
No problem 👍
Tyre pressure monitor valve caps they are cheap just keep an eye on them, just saying
Hey Mel , you got to admire your determination lol you dnt give up until you figured it out , well done. This build is certainly interesting 😊
Bloody hell I think I would have given up. Awesome job 👍
Thanks 👍
Hello Mel, It is interesting to see you accomplishing the fitment of your own Tyre's and thumbs up to you for all the effort, I've tried myself in he past but its not for me. However, My Vario Tyre's I had fitted at Costco and Balanced, although I had to take the wheels of the van first due to its height.
Yes they need to be Balanced as many of the Viewers have been mentioning this to you but thus far you haven't acknowledged this so what are you doing my friend with regards to Balancing the wheels as it's important you have them balanced. If your a Costco Member perhaps try having a chat at there Tyre service department, Good Luck.
Steve from Manchester 👍👍👍👍👍
Well done Mel.
You can retyre now.
Haha 😂😂👍
Mel, did you hear us shouting " push the bottom of the tyre into the groove to make the space "😅. I think you will have noticed by now that you've put an inside wheel on the outside. The valve is wrongly facing inwards so you would have to take the wheel off to test the pressure. Put it on the inside and the valve will be facing outwards. Its going to be a long day if they're all back to front given the new tyres are directional . Sorry mate, but I'm only trying to help. Take care👋
Push the bead of the tyre into the well of the wheel! 😮
Then it'll go straight on.
Did you put the wheels so the valves were opposite each other?
He hasn't put it on wrong the valve goes to the outside on the outside rim
Mels mobile tyre fitters. Has a ring to it
Mel I think they have special molegrips for that job. I have seen them and can't remember where, I thought they were for welders holding body panel seams together. they have a kind of horseshoe with a ninety degree bend at the end on one jaw and a flatter horseshoe with a little groove on each side which now seems more likely to be for wheel rims. Come to think of it they might be in one of my old toolboxes. If I come across them i'll send a pic. They would work well with the rim protectors you get with motorbike tyre levers also.
Thanks Mel from outback stuck.Would it have helped when it was half on to let the jack down.
Mel tyre gauge normally have 2 connections opposite each one you push on the valve other you pull on the valve to inflate tyres to save taking the wheel off . iv seen rubbish tools but them tyre irons are a joke mite come handy it you get a puncher in one of your electric bikes😂
Top job 👌 as a truck tyre fitter myself I was rather impressed especially with those tyre levers 😂
I reckon you would've had it on in half the time with the proper tools
Thanks 👍
Get yourself some tyre valve extensions Mel, have them on my twin wheel. You can check inflation to both tyres while fitted.
Great video again.
👍🇬🇧
Thanks for the tip!👍
You don't need an extension, Thats what the other side of the inflator is for, You pull it on to the valve facing in
@@keithsbitsandpieces I know what's easier!
👍
More lube on the rim edge and front tyre bead and kick the bottom end into middle, Also decent tyre irons too long is too whippy!
Need to use the longer bent metal valves that poke through to the outside
I've always been of the opinion that when one makes an arse of oneself, one should not film said process and put said footage on UA-cam. 🤣 Well done mate!
Well I’m glad you found it entertaining 😂
😂 Truth is, I’m dealing with a leaking alloy. Bought a manual tyre machine and welded up an assist arm with a duck. Couldn’t get it to work. That night had a look on UA-cam and found out I should have been moving anti clock and not clockwise🙄 all good now. Good luck with the van!
Hi Mel..when fitting the rear wheels back onto truck, are you putting the centering rings on first making sure both wheels are centered to the wheel studs? Im not talking about the split rings you tighten the wheel nuts up to but centering rings. Ive not heard you mention these and sone people are unaware of them and find the rear wheels can move on the wheel studs over time buggering up the wheel holes..hope this makes sense!
I got tyred watching that! lol
next time use rubber jaw guards ( or a wrap of insulating tape ) on the vice grips,it's stops them scaring the rims
Thank you that’s not a bad idea 👍🍻
Hi love watching your youtube channel but 85 psi can do alot of damage if something goes wrong whilst inflating truck tyres, best to use a safety cage, or leave it to the professionals. plenty of mobile commercial / agricultural tyre fitters out there
Hi Mel, what about the balancing?
You’ve heard the comment ‘a bad workman blames his tools’ but as has been pointed out…… your trying to force the tyre over the rim without the bead being in the well of the rim, if you did it would give you extra mm’s to get the tyre on this not over stressing your tyre levers.
I know
did you need to balance the wheels?
I haven’t yet but I wheel do when I take it for an mot 👍
Lot of Faffing About there, Id rather pay a Tenner, take to local Tyre Depot, to throw it on.
Chip alot of paint off the Rim? Lol
Bet the Tyre Soap cost mire than having it fitted 😂
Somebody is going to end up with a van on top of them showing them that method.
Well that’s just natural selection
Felt your pain there but well done for persistence.
Thank you 🙏
Hi mate im no tyre fitter but i think the problem you were having is with the so called tyre iron,s ive seen less curved bananas i think they need the bin.😂
MEL can some van build please
Coming rite up in the next video 👍
Mel, what are your thoughts about Balancing the Tyre?
The old ones were not balanced so I’m not sure if they need to be but I’m going to get the front ones done professionally and I’ll ask them for advice when I do
Very inflatormative 👍
Who needs laurel and Hardy when we've got you!!
That was a hard watch you never used a sledge hammer once a tyre fitters main tool lol
What about balancing the wheels?
No need
@@BigVanSmallWorld won’t they vibrate like cars?
Yep!a lot easier than getting a professional to do it?😂😂😂
Is there no need for wheel balancing on truck tyres?
Correct 👍
Do they have to be balanced?
I don’t think they do as they wasn’t before hand 👍
I had the same question, google says they should but its a bit unclear
No need to balance them, in 15 years I've never balanced drive tyres and only ever needed to balance front steers 3 times 👍
When you dropped the tyre it looks like you need a new shock.
Out of interest Mel, Why didnt you put the top of the tyre on first and work your way down with Gravity? I'm sure it would of been easier.
So I could lever them up ⬆️
He wouldn't get the leverage the other way
@@leebrown9680 It's much easier working top to bottom, You get more room to get the levers in and out without them catching the ground, also you can take advantage of your body weight to push down on the lever
Mel - Why didn't you KICK the bottom of the tyre into the WELL of the wheel instead of leaving it on the inner-rim?? ..... I think you & Frank Spencer are Bruvvers-From-Anuvver-Muvver 😂🤣😂
Good idea but the tyre levers look like they are made of lead😅😅😅
Hi mel. Its a pity you are not an octopuss that tyre would have on in time at all
Haha Becky calls me her little octopus I’ll let you figure out why 😜
Are you swapping waffle on a Wednesday to work out on a Wednesday? That looks like hard work! Being serious for a sec, dont you have to balance them like a car wheel? How on earth do you do that?
No need to balance them
Damaged beads anyone 🤣
All the pro tyre fitters in the comments already 😂😂
😂👍
Aluminium tyre irons hahahahahahaha , they really are poo mate
😰😅
Get a crowbar mel
Before you said anything I was saying to myself those tyre irons are a joke.
That's why people use garages for tyres Mel, that was hard enough to watch never mind doing it, also you ruined your nice new paintwork on the rims. I take my hat off to you for doing stuff yourself but some battles aren't worth the fight.
Not the tools it’s you at folt
But it’s not my fault you cant spell lol 😂
Folt....😂😂😂
@@andrewpatterson5349 you are a was of time yes I now I can’t spell at lest I cane fit tyres and be safe doing it
@@user-xj8ln5wc3q keep going...... you're cracking me up here!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Those tyre levers are shite, that was painful to watch
Those tyre levers are not a bit shit, they are total shit!
You dont use soap! You use grease . Now you locked up the moist. Your wheel is gonna rust from the isnside out, have flat tire. Its a way to keep making videos i guess. And its so simple on these trucks, for the last part u use a car with a towbar and a piece of wood to push the tire on to the wheel, it takes like 5 minutes.
Mel was using the professional stuff , it's called soap but it's really a special grease stuff
@@johnshaw4140 Thank god, haha, and thank you for the info!
you're tyre levers are not heavy enough, junk.
I know 😂👍
Boring
