    ‘Too much mechanical stuff’? What sort of people think building a camper is just about buying an old van and fitting it out inside? You have done absolutely the right thing Mel and you are showing the reality behind converting an old van, not some romantic notion.

    Hi Mel, immersion element may not a bad idea in the calorifier, you can get 12v dc ones as well and use it for excess solar energy dump, I presume you're gonna have at least 2x 350w solar panels, saves moving when sunny to heat water. Bobil Vans have a not too expensive simple smart switch that allows you to do this. They do calorifiers and elements also. ❤

    Hi Mel, Just thought I'd mention that's the way a commercial fitter would remove a tyre on the roadside. I had a blow out on my truck a while ago, and the fitter removed and changed the tyre without even removing the wheel. I'd never seen it done before but they made it look easy. Not something I'd want to attempt though!

    Few tips for refitting the tyre, plenty of lube and chuck the tyre on starting at the top then kick it on towards the bottom. For the second bead again start at the top push the tyre over the rim, clamp some mole grips onto the wheel at 10 and 2 oclock to help hold the tyre and slowly lever the tyre on and move the grips round as you go.

    Mel, So its got a heating element in it! you don't have to use it. I have a similar system in my van. I can heat the water tank (heat storage) via 4 sources, 240v, solar, diesel and the engine. This water tank transfers its heat via heat exchangers to other water systems like hot water for the shower and sink taps and even another exchanger for a air heater (like the heater in your car)...This is a hydronic heating system in my language or a calorifier in yours , so the more sources to heat the system the better!!!....

    Are you going to syphon the hot water from the calorifier into a holding tank before it replenishes itself with cold and cools all the hot water down. ( they do do that they do ) There is a lad online who built his own calorifier from a beer keg. i will find his channel name if you want it. he saved a lot of ££

  • @Azurren

    In terms of hot water are you planning on routing the engine coolant into the tank then back into the cooling system again? I'm not sure how much extra strain this'll put on the water pump also you'll be adding *a lot* of extra pipe, connectors and complexity. It would be a disaster if a small leak lead to a catastrophic engine failure or getting stuck in the middle of nowhere.
    Have you considered a water-to-water heat exchanger? Maybe connect it just after the thermostat so the engine warms up nicely and uses the coolant before the radiator for heating.
    This will mean you'll need a separate pump ofc but maybe worth it for the peace of mind. (Also you could disable it with a flick of a switch if needed)
    Keep it up Mel, you're doing fantastic!

    Probs a stupid question but how do you balance the tyre, as everytime I've had new tyres fitted this seems to be the longest and most important part, enjoying all mechanical parts of vid btw and looking forward to camper build

    • @stuartthompson2647
      @stuartthompson2647 5 місяців тому +2

      Truck tyres don't usually need balancing due to the restricted speed, there is also balancing powder which is just in a little bag that you chuck inside the tyre.

    Hi Mel. Now your on the new van build. Are you going to fit a vapor barrier on your van? I watched a video the other day by a guy who said he was a professional van builder and he didn't put on a vapor barrier. I asked why not? He said he and most professional campervan builders don't fit one claiming it causes issues later on in the vans life. So i was wondering on your thoughts on this as I hope to soon start work on my van. Once I found one 😊
